Re: changing to debian?

2011-07-08 Thread aYo Binitie
I have raged against Ubuntu's directional change, a comment made here, to me
when I questioned the possible use of xfce made me do some due diligence.
The comment was explore it before you condemn it. In the light of that
comment I explored xfce, mint and natty. I did not like the the vanilla xfce
but, it's customisable. Loved Mint I have that as my office OS now. upgraded
one of my laptops at home to Natty and persevered for a few days, you know
what, after getting round the changes I have to say its not bad. It's not
there yet but, it's not bad. 1 or 2 more releases should make a difference.

2011-05-16 Thread aYo Binitie
Hi Scott,
Your opinions are noted and they are valid. I never claimed that XFCE was no
good - just that I had never used it and there were probably good reasons
why it was second best to Gnome2. Having said that considering the fact that
going forward there is a need for a new desktop to be adopted - I acquiese
to the fact that you - the UbuntuStudio team have done your due-diligence
and have found this the sensible and viable option. I will take you up on
your suggestion and try Xubuntu to see for myself the possibilities therein.
I have converted the entire Flash development (and IT ) team in my Agency to
the Ubuntuside thus my interest in this is tremendous.

Re: *Official Announcement:* Ubuntu Studio is switching to XFCE.

2011-05-15 Thread aYo Binitie
Thanks for the reply - all these changes really put me on the spot. I have
for the first time in 4 years not been in a race to install a new Ubuntu
distro. I detest Unity and even UbuntuStudio Natty which sensibly has kept
GNome 2 is not as fast as UbuntuStudio Meerkat. No compiz in Gnome3 means
Gnome3 is a NO for me. I really can not imagine my workflow without it. It
has been a defining factor in the slick workflow for UStudio. XFCE - I have
no idea about but it was super we would not be all having these rants. I
fear I will be sticking to 10.10 - truly a perfect 10 for the foreseeable
future. The future for the moment looks very bleak - It seems we are now
having our VISTA moment in Linux. This is a real shame after all the gains
Ubuntu & UbuntuStudio have made in the last few years

I think I had this experience with Intrepid or Jaunty. The workaround was
uninstall NetworkManager and install WICD? It worked for me but I cannot
give you any guarantees. I would say that considering the time it takes to
do fresh install that may be a better option. :(

I'll take you on that -
re the pointer: I have a wheel mouse theme, and the wheel graphics do not
show on the desktop, just the default pointer however if the mouse is over
firefox the proper wheel graphics appear

the splash screen is different now, since ubuntu changed to use plymouth,
maybe it is not very prety, but hey, at least we have a splash screen.
If someone want to help design a different one for the next release, it will
be great :D about the pointe, didnt get it, are you talking about the
pointer color or the shape?

Boot splash screen

2010-04-23 Thread aYo Binitie
Hi,
I upgraded to Lucid 64 last night - It was nice and pretty painless, I have
almost every thing working but for a couple of things

1. The Mouse does not display its selected icon when its over the desktop.
It renders ok over opened applications and browsers but over the desktop its
a plain white pointer.

2. the Boot splash screen has not changed and its rendered really horribly.
The resolution is completely out of whack and no amount of rejigging in the
start up manager seems to be able to rectify this.

Any ideas??

Re: PC x Mac

2008-12-02 Thread aYo Binitie
Daniel I concur.
So much is made about the beauty of a Mac and while I concede that they are
not ugly I cannot really see its great beauty. Its either a boring brushed
metal or worse white/black plastic box with in my view a logo that never
makes it feel like a serious machine, whats to be so enamored about? I
personally cannot compare it to the look of a Dell precision, Alienware or
any of the decent gamiing machines out there which would be about the same
specification. As for the OS well Ubuntu kicks them all in the head. I
really cannot understand it and I have a 1st and terminal degree in the Fine
Arts.

Re: Future Ubuntu Studio design guideline and Jaunty/+1 idea

2008-11-12 Thread aYo Binitie
I think its neither here nor there. I seriously customize my themes anyway
and never use the defaults. I think of greater import is the structural
stability of the system. Things like the inability to use accessibility
sounds with system sounds (my experience) and improvements to Samba and so
on are in my view the reall things to concentrate on. Adding new powerful
features like ease of multi screen deployment and things that keep UStudio
the best OS in the world. Thanks for everything, you guys are fantastic.

what does thte lack of a realtime kernel mean

2008-11-05 Thread aYo Binitie
Hi There,
I've been mulling over whether or not to go to Intrepid. I must confess the
release note stating the failure of 'real-time kernel' has put me off.
However I'm quite new to Ubuntuland and would like to know what exactly this
means in term of performance. I'm no sound or video designer, I just like
Ustudio but, do a heavy amount of Asctionscript development on it. What does
the lack of a realtime kernel mean??

Gracias

properly.

Please please solve the system-sound no play - pulse audio troubles in Intrepid-Studio and other niggles

2008-10-25 Thread aYo Binitie
Please please, I beg that you solve the problems with the system soun
updatsd and pulse audio - and the problems with Samba and VirtualBox. I
brought lappy #2 out today to check for up dates and give it a run. Lappy2
runs Ubuntu Hardy. No problems there with system sounds at all. So its
definitely the configuration used with UStudio.

I've checked all the pulse devices, there does not seem to be anything
obvious to configure - ok I know nothing about it either. I've almost

WTF do the system sounds not work. I've wrecked one Ubuntu setup trying to
find answers - I just cannot do that again:). What exactly do I need to do
to pulse audio?

This is like a bad recurring nightmare. Having reinstalled Ubunty Hardy/
Ubuntu Studio following the loss of my network. Yesterday I installed
updates (approved) next tried to get VirtualBox - no show - that had to be
reinstalled. That worked and then the moment of truth try to see my other
computers on the network - No Cigar - once again it had disappeared. Gone!!!
I definitely do not want to reinstall tha OS inorder to get my network back.

Oh I could access the internet but, there was also something curious
happening, If I tried to download somthing inside Virtualbox, Pidgin lost
access to the net - it was all very bizarre. A bit like the loss of my
system sounds once I start to set up my tools - thats a different story

It had. All I did was install VirtualBox and next thing t;was gone. I
reinstalled UStudio though because I really needed the network and I was
wasting more time trying to find a solution. Still I would really like to
know just in case of another happenstance
