Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Trying to update 14.04.1 to 14.10
I've started using Ubuntu, several different flavors since I migrated from Windows a little over a year ago. A couple things I learned...the hard way... 1) There's a difference between upgrade and update. The safest way to upgrade to a different OS version is to do a fresh install, and make the home partition a separate partition. That way all my pictures, song files, data, etc., remains intact. And the fresh install uses a very small space comparatively. 2) Backup back up backup. Stuff can and will break, most often due to user error. "Forcing" a relase upgrade could be done by command line: https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/serverguide/installing-upgrading.html Notification about what kind of upgrade ever are a silly custom. That makes people upgrade without at least reading the news of their distro's homepage, let alone that they never ever will read release notes. A notification "hello, here are upgrades" is insane, a self-responsible user is aware about needed upgrades and about things that need attention when doing an upgrade. Just upgrading, while there is a notification easily could end up disastrous. *buntu made a big step into the wrong direction with this Windows/iOS like approach. JFTR the Ubuntu Studio team compared release upgrades with installing a new release and *buntu rlease upgrades tend to cause issues, you better stay with your release or do a plain new install. -- ubuntu-studio-users mailing list ubuntu-studio-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-users-- ubuntu-studio-users mailing list ubuntu-studio-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-users
Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] No sound during video playback
I've run into reoccurring no sound problems the past few months. I actually though I had added it a while back, but it seems I didn't. It's one of the more standard audio coding systems, and should be included by default. All of the audio live coding together take up so little space, we should just include as much of it as possible. We are lacking a bit in researching, listing and selecting applications for our workflows. Anyone who might be interested in helping us with this is more than welcome to join our efforts. Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] not smart enough to update adobe
Ralf, after viewing your suggested links, and taking into account your comment "...The best thing to do, is to ignore home pages that need flash player...", it reminded me that sometime in the past, as I was trying various distros, I ended up having 2 browsers available, i.e., Firefox and Chrome. So if I have any issues from this point forward, I'll just add Chrome to my choice of browsers. Re: Problem installing Ubuntu Studio
I run Ubuntu Studio 13.07, 64 bit ("raring") I went through similar problems; I'n not a Linux expert but I'll share what I did...it hopefully may help. 1) When you said you checked for errors, I found out (by Googling for answers) that clicking the "check for defects" button was not enough. I went to the Ubuntu Installation instructions on the Ubuntu website and it had instructions for the best way to error check using what they call "checksums". 2) I too, had to be patient...lots of times, on various installs (I've tried several different distros, and Ubuntu Studio is my favorite--I do lots of Photography and guitar related stuff. So, many times, I have discovered that-unlike my experiences with Microsoft Windows-there isn't an hour glass or progress bar showing what's going on. But I DO hear the hard drive working. And, yes, patience paid off. Good luck; I'm glad to help if I can. Just remember, I am not a professional Ubuntu user. Re: Jack & Ardour updates
I just received this email today. Last night I already performed the updates via Tim Krone's suggested link tohttps://launchpad.net/~kxstudio-team/+archive/ppa The result was I now have a choice of loading (from the menu popdown at the desktop upper left icon) my usual Ardour version 2.8.14, or Ardour3.1. My old Jack 0.3.9 is now only version 0.3.10 for some reason I don't understand. I did the updates and added the PPAto my repositories but there was a note in the terminal and at the website stating "Start jackd/jackdbus; then run 'pulse-jack' which will enable pulse audio support." When I entered "pulse-jack" in the terminal, it responded "sudo: pulse-audio: command not found". I loaded Ardour 3 and was able to record my guitar on a fresh track along with the visual active mixer volume bar, and the track waveform showing, but the result was the same as when I did the same routine in Ardour 2.8.14, a scratchy sound from the "click" beats. Also, the message window for Jack shows a scrolling repeating messages of XRUNS Callback, numbers 45, 46they change. Changing the Jack setup buffers, latency, etc, doesn't help that. Then, of course, Ardour crashes. Also, when I start Jack (before or after Ardour, doesn't matter) it adds Jack source, and sink to the connections. It's less a user error, but perhaps some missing configuration that has to be done by the user. After we found out what is going wrong, we can give some hints, how to store and restore audio sessions. I for example write scripts and use http://aj-snapshot.sourceforge.net/ to store and restore connections, if needed. I avoid to use jack dbus. Others from this list for sure could give some hints, how to use session managers. Re: Jack & Ardour updates
I use Patchage as well as Jack because I get confused with the names of interfaces, etc., used in jack setup and the connections diagram is easier to see and understand in Patchage. True, I noticed the order of devices do indeed change after reboot. And, additionally, I have tried loading Jack both before or after loading Ardour. I use the connections diagrams of both Jack and Patchage to help me understand how it all relates to the mixers edit windows. I am hoping I will eventually get a grip on how to make all my connections thru the Ardour mixers windows so I don't end up having to do the same with Jack. An update may help. I just don't know if Tim's advice would work with my version of Ubuntu or break it "...I personally would recommend the kxstudio repos in launchpad. There you will get nearly newest packages. https://launchpad.net/~kxstudio-team/+archive/ppa Ardour is version 3.1 there and jack is version 1.9.9.5. I suspect a handling error. We need more information. Why are you using Jack, Patchage and Ardour, if you only want to record and play music with Ardour? For this setup, Ardour does store and restore all connections, you only need to start Jack and Ardour. If you're using the "Audiobox USB interface" and an audio device from your mobo should be enabled too, it might happen that after a reboot, the order of the audio devices does change. There are two ways to avoid this. You can disable your onboard device by the BIOS settings or you edit a /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf This example does show how to reserve hw:0 for a HDSP card and hw:1, hw:2 for 2 Envy24 cards: # ALSA module ordering options snd slots=snd_hdspm,snd_ice1712,snd_ice1712 -- Ubuntu-Studio-users mailing list Ubuntu-Studio-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-users-- Ubuntu-Studio-users mailing list Ubuntu-Studio-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-users

Re: new to Ubuntu Studio
I'm using Ubuntu Studio Quantal 12.10 64 bit, Kernel Linux 3.5.0-23-lowlatency,GNOME 3.6.0 and love it. My focus is photography and am using Darktable 1.1.2, Gimp 2.8.2, Shotwell, and a few other apps. This kernel seems to have a very low latency with excellent results. My other hobby is music (jazz guitar) and I will be using Ardour, Jack, Patchage, etc. Question: Why are you removing Pulse Audio? I'm fairly new to the Linux world and I've read comments from others who say the same thing, indicating that Pulse Audio is problematic? Regards, Leo From: Ralf Mardorf To: ubuntu-studio-users@lists.ubuntu.com Sent: Monday, January 28, 2013 1:03 PM Subject: Re: new to Ubuntu Studio Hi :) I'm using Ubuntu Studio 10.04 and Ubuntu 12.10, since Ubuntu Studio 12.10 does cause more issues, than Ubuntu 12.10 does. I recommend to install Ubuntu Studio 12.04. For Ubuntu Studio with Xfce you can remove pulseaudio. If you want to get rid of pulseaudio for GNOME 3, than build a dummy package with equivs http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-helpers.en.html it's easy to do and doesn't cause an issue. You also could build the gnome-settings-daemon with pulseaudio disabled, I guess this is the only part of GNOME with the hard dependency. Dear fellow testers: The testing period for Ubuntu Studio 12.04.2 LTS has started! Ubuntu Studio 12.04.2 LTS is a point release of Ubuntu Studio 12.04 LTS, incorporating the latest changes in the Ubuntu archive after the release of Ubuntu Studio 12.04.1 LTS. There hadn't been much big changes, except with the linux-lowlatency kernel, which was now updated to 3.2.0-37.37, based on the Linux v.3.2.37 kernel. Please test the images which can be downloaded from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/precise/dvd/current/ . We especially want testers with amd64 machines to test the amd64 ISOs since there was normally a problem of not having enough testers. Just follow the testcases for Ubuntu Studio in http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/254/builds. After you have tested it report the result on the same page of the testcases. If the ISO installs and boots and runs OK after installation, submit a pass result. If it fails, please submit a failed result and also leave the comment with the reported bug(s) and comment. It would also be nice to give us the link of your hardware profile. If you have any questions please contact Scott Lavender (scott-work) or Howard Chan (smartboyhw) in #ubuntustudio-devel on irc.freenode.net. But install problems got to be addressed to the general Ubuntu list not Ubuntu-Studio list. 2 reasons (for me) are: a) General Ubuntu list is bigger on user number, so will have faster and better response b) It is wise to keep this list (UbuntuStudio) free of noise best.
