Ubuntu/Linux is supposed to be better than other OSs but definitely music production is not one of those fields in which it gets even to the minimum expected. Personally I think this is because we don't have a firm base to build. You can't expect to have great user apps if you can't even have a good OS layer. Even if you have great apps, for what if you can't get the OS to work !?. We have ZynAddSubFX, but your sound card just doesn't work !, why ?, maybe because pulseaudio, maybe because the driver, maybe because the kernel or maybe because the modules you load ?, or maybe because you are not tired of linux and you just want to play and forget about Ubuntu Studio. I recently did a clean install of 11.10 (amd64), and tonight gave it a first attempt with the firewire interface... With 8.04, I start ffado-mixer, and it automatically starts the ffado-dbus-server. With this one, it merely complains that the dbus server isn't running, so I'm forced to open a terminal and start it, then when I restart ffado-mixer, it tells me 'no supported devices found'. This isn't exactly true, for when I go to a terminal and run ffado-test ListDevices, it clearly finds my focusrite pro26IO on node 1. I launch qjackctl, open the setup window, and select the firewire driver, accepting all the defaults for now. When I attempt to start jack, it fails with a 'cannot connect to server as client' message. After many attempts and reboots, I discover that if I start qjackctl and start jack without attempting to start ffado-mixer or ffado-dbus-server first, then jack will actually start! (With 8.04, I HAD to start ffado-mixer first.) I launch Ardour, open a new session, and start to record two tracks of whatever audio happened to be playing on the stereo at the time. About 24 minutes later, just as I'm getting complacent with no xruns recorded(!), jack inexplicably dies, but qjackctl doesn't know it, so it is locked up, too. I ended up having to go back to the terminal and kill -9 everything jack-related I could find, then power down my interface, and power it back on, then restart qjackctl, and finally jack. Only then could I tell Ardour to reconnect and save the session, but for some reason Ardour's transport was messed up. I could move the playhead either directly, or with the | button, but the 'Big Clock' still showed the time at the end of the aborted capture, and the 'play' button or the spacebar had no effect. I closed Ardour, then went to stop jack and close qjackctl, and qjackctl threw messages about a client still connected (Ardour was already shut down at this point), and after I press the 'close anyway' button, then qjackctl itself refuses to quit cleanly, and I get a 'program not responding' message from the window manager, and I'm forced to go back to the terminal and resort to kill -9 again. The developers are over halfway into the 12.04 cycle now, so I don't see any point in submitting bug reports against 11.10 for all this. The overall design of PA is capable to solve many many problems for Linux Audio and I think, we have no better approach and I am sure, that nobdy on earth really wants any all new experiments so PA should be pushed I think. I connect and combine them over wineasio in jack with genuine linux applications i.e. ardour, hydrogen, linuxsampler, rackarrack, zynadd My favorite vsti-hosts are reaper - I abuse it just for this - and a windows freeware named vsthost by herman seib http://www.hermannseib.com/vsthost.htm Those settings run tolerably even for live performance, but maybe I should give dssi-vst a try again. ZynAddSubFx and Bristol are both on my favorite list of synths/v-inst/fx, but unfortunaly the list is kind'a small if you exclude Win-VST. I havent had any serious problems using them with dssi-vst, but I havent tested extensively and only one at a time, like XLN addictive drums for when I practice my e-drums or VoxengoBoogex for guitar. I have removed Pulse, but other than that, I just run them with vsthost /_path_to_/vsti.dll and most of them work, If I'm composing/editing I just load them in my host (XT2) but I like the idea of just clicking on the drums icon on my desktop and play without having to start my host and load/setup the instrument first. Hi Olivier, guitarix is great, I've been in touch with Hermann, because I think it could better; It could actually become the Studio Devil of the free software, with a better graphique interface looking more like an amp, build with presets, a noise gate.. Regards Teza .. Selling 64 bit processors to consumers was a scam to trick people into upgrading their computers... again. I repeat, 64 bit has practically no use for consumer use or audio recording. Does anyone here disagree? Andrew Austin, TX I'm not too familiar with some of the technical details, but I believe you are correct in saying that, at this point, 64-bit seems largely useless to the average user, particularly as far as audio goes. When it comes to versions of Ubuntu, I have personally found that Hardy is far and away the most stable and efficient OS of the current Ubuntu releases. This applies to my computer, though, and your mileage may vary. I am looking forward to Karmic, and hope that it solves some of the many problems I've been having with the Jaunty RT kernel (and, no, I do not know how to compile my own kernels. Maybe one day). Jason, as for a good set-up that gives you no noise, if you're going to need to buy some kind of pre-amp/DI or audio-interface as well as a mic, you will have a hard time keeping it under $200. But it is possible. When I first started recording, I used a very cheap $60 Behringer mixer (which came with two channels that could be used as pre-amps, and phantom power which I did not need at the time.) and a used $50 EV dynamic mic. I ran the mic into the mixer, and then ran the mixer's RCA tape-out direclty into my computer's on-board soundcard, using an RCA to 1/8 cable. Whenever I listen back to those recordings, I am actually surprised that they sound fairly decent. I guess the moral of this story is that $200 won't get you anything 'nice', but it should get you something that will work, and probably fairly well. By the way, what equipment do you have right now? And it's also right that the hary one is the more stable one. cheers Teza Le jeudi 06 août 2009 à 11:38 -0700, Natalia Rakowski a écrit : Sorry. Hi, do #1 first, and install the ubuntu studio after. It's what I will do Cheers Teza Le jeudi 06 août 2009 à 11:54 -0700, Natalia Rakowski a écrit : I'm not sure where you're getting the idea from that I'm angry. In previous versions I was able to do #2, but the instructions on the website point to: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudioPreparation which doesn't tell you that you can just install the ubuntustudio packages. So, just to understand. Can I do #2 or do I have to go through all of the various steps in #1? Re: xjadeo
Hi thanks for your help, so that mean, you've got to demux the audio from the vidéo, if you want to work on it, in Ardour for exemple? Cheers Teza . On my side, the is running but without sound? any advices to make it run properly? Thanks for your help. Cheers Teza It's not supposed to run with sound. The point is for you to have another Jack aware application sync with the video and play the sound back for you (i.e. you import the audio track into an ardour session and work in ardour on adjusting the audio). Xjadeo itself has no audio backend.
