In case any you are curious, I just discovered right now that Spotify is
fully compatible with JACK.  Pretty nifty.

 euhh ...
 how is that ?
i just started up jack, than spotify, but no spotify in the connect window
i'm guessing you have some sort of pulseaudiojack bridge app running?
if that's the case then every app is 'fully compatible with jack'

 So, if I ready correctly:

Ubuntu Studio is not, and will not be a productive audio recording and

 Why:
  1) kernel issues
  2) driver issues

 Options:
  1) Use a new distro that some say is great ! ( a new clone of
 ubuntu/debian/etc.. ) - not really a good option
  2) Just install Windows and be able to do some of the stuff, maybe
 all you need- realistic option
  3) Wait until Linux has a decent Sound API - unrealistic
 option

Well, that conclusion is sound with my own experience. Ubuntu/Linux is
supposed to be better than other OSs but definitely music production is not
one of those fields in which it gets even to the minimum expected.

Personally I think this is because we don't have a firm base to build. You
can't expect to have great user apps if you can't even have a good OS
layer. Even if you have great apps, for what if you can't get the OS to
work !?. We have ZynAddSubFX, but your sound card just doesn't work !, why
?, maybe because pulseaudio, maybe because the driver, maybe because the
kernel or maybe because the modules you load ?, or maybe because you are
not tired of linux and you just want to play and forget about Ubuntu Studio.

for Ubuntu Studio as a productive audio recording and mixing environment?

Four years ago, I bought a Focusrite Saffire Pro 26 firewire interface,
largely because it was listed as one of the best-supported by the ffado
project. I loaded up a copy of UbuntuStudio 8.04LTS. The clean install
wouldn't talk to the interface, but after I obtained a bleeding-edge copy
of the ffado source from one of the developers, and recompiled locally, I
was up and running. I've used that installation for every recording I've
done since. For the most part it's stable, and I've learned to work-around
 its quirks
When 10.04 came out, I thought I'd upgrade, thinking I'd like to see
the latest enhancements to Ardour, and it might be more forgiving of the
order I start up programs. But 10.04 wasn't stable enough to run jack for
more than a few minutes before the xrun count went thru the roof.
Since then, I've tried every new release, and the regressions are
 stacking up faster than ever.

I recently did a clean install of 11.10 (amd64), and tonight gave it a
first attempt with the firewire interface...

With 8.04, I start ffado-mixer, and it automatically starts the
ffado-dbus-server. With this one, it merely complains that the dbus server
isn't running, so I'm forced to open a terminal and start it, then when I
restart ffado-mixer, it tells me 'no supported devices found'.
This isn't exactly true, for when I go to a terminal and run ffado-test
ListDevices, it clearly finds my focusrite pro26IO on node 1.

I launch qjackctl, open the setup window, and select the firewire
driver, accepting all the defaults for now. When I attempt to start jack,
it fails with a 'cannot connect to server as client' message.

After many attempts and reboots, I discover that if I start qjackctl and
start jack without attempting to start ffado-mixer or ffado-dbus-server
first, then jack will actually start! (With 8.04, I HAD to start
 ffado-mixer first.)
I launch Ardour, open a new session, and start to record two tracks of
whatever audio happened to be playing on the stereo at the time. About 24
minutes later, just as I'm getting complacent with no xruns recorded(!),
jack inexplicably dies, but qjackctl doesn't know it, so it is locked up,
too. I ended up having to go back to the terminal and kill -9 everything
jack-related I could find, then power down my interface, and power it back
on, then restart qjackctl, and finally jack. Only then could I tell Ardour
to reconnect and save the session, but for some reason Ardour's transport
was messed up. I could move the playhead either directly, or with the |
button, but the 'Big Clock' still showed the time at the end of the aborted
capture, and the 'play' button or the spacebar had no effect.
I closed Ardour, then went to stop jack and close qjackctl, and
qjackctl threw messages about a client still connected (Ardour was already
shut down at this point), and after I press the 'close anyway' button, then
qjackctl itself refuses to quit cleanly, and I get a 'program not
responding' message from the window manager, and I'm forced to go back to
the terminal and resort to kill -9 again.

The developers are over halfway into the 12.04 cycle now, so I don't
see any point in submitting bug reports against 11.10 for all this. Have
they gotten to the point of publishing any pre-builds of 12.04, and would
it be any help to install that and submit bugs

ffmpeg -i your video -vn -ar 44100 -ab 192k -ac 2 -f wav -y mane of

 Bonjour Teza,

I had meant to reply to a previous email of yours regarding Traverso
but I had not. I apologize for that. However, I have some
information about Traverso that you might find of interest.

Firstly, you may find the latest (in Debian) Traverso here:
 http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/traverso

At the bottom of the page is a link to .deb files for different
architectures. As far as I can tell, this is the latest stable
release for Traverso (shown as 0.49.1 on their download page).

 Hi Scott and Teza,

I haven't tested yet the package, but amd64 and i386 release of this
package are now available on lprod.org lucid repository.

Teza, could you test the install from lprod.org repository ?

 Bye and thanks.

However, the current version (0.49.1) is now in Maverick (thanks

Transparency is indeed crucial. It is a major advantage of free software
and I think it could be pushed some more in Ubuntu overall. Personally I
have noticed your efforts in that field and appreciate them a lot :-)

We are working on JACK and Pulse Audio integration via dbus and the Alpha 1
ISO is available for all to begin testing. Obviously finding stable
integration between JACK and Pulse Audio would be a marked improvement in
 usability.

I love to see this improve but still I think, it will not be easy to
diminish the hatred against PA that many users have accumulated.

The overall design of PA is capable to solve many many problems for
Linux Audio and I think, we have no better approach and I am sure, that
nobdy on earth really wants any all new experiments so PA should be
 pushed I think.

BUT to gain the trust of the users PA must become much more
user-configurable then before. The first step should be a disable
PA-switch in a decent, accessible GUI (could be a mixer). This should
be possible *without* removing PA alltogether and PA should be really
absolute passive if this switch is flicked by the user.

LV2 plugins are another area of improvement. We began packaging these last
 cycle and continue this cycle.

That is very good news :-)
Can we have the all-new CALF-stuff from SVN?

Please let us know how we can improve Ubuntu Studio for you, just remember
that we work within the Ubuntu paradigm, so all improvements must comply
with those systemic restrictions (e.g. all applications in the official
 repositories).

Guitarix is very important and it makes astounding progress at the
moment. Brummer and freinds made this little crushing amp a veritable
powerstack usable for serious studio-use with full MIDI-learn, built-in
convolution-engine and many other pro-grade features.
And i have to stress this again: the new CALF-Plugins that are in the
works now will be a revolution in the world of native plugins for Linux.
Some are entirely new like the sidechain-compressor, others replace
bit-rotten LADSPA-plugins that do not work anymore like the powerfull
deesser. And most of them work allready:

The following PPA is a good one, imo. It has 2.8.7 (for karmic and
lucid) and hopefully, 2.8.9 soon (only for Lucid, I suppose, as the
author is running lucid now).

Traverso. I can open it until I choose the directory for my files then
freeze. I reported this bug under the beta2. So looks like the bug still
there and it's a bit of shame, because traverso is a really good piece

Hi Scott nice to hear from you. The bug in Traverso has been reported.
For Festige and other packages who could be useful having in Ubuntu
Studio, maybe you could be in touch with the guy who's got this
repository https://launchpad.net/~falk-t-j/+archive/lucid/ there's a
lot of goodies here.

Can wait for the final release. Thanks again for the work done.

Did you submit a bug report? You can do so here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/traverso/+bugs?field.status:list=NEW

A quick tutorial for reporting bugs can be found here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

Reporting the bug is important so that the correct person becomes
aware of the bug.

I would like also why a soft like Festige, making the use of vst very
easy with any soft running jack, is not part of Ubuntu Studio.
All the best
Regards
Tez

Primarily I would say it is a lack of developers to package it.

Remember, building it not all that is required, that's the easy part
:) It's the packaging that is the difficult part.

The developers would always welcome any help.

Ok Camilo, as I can you're under Karmic Koala 9.10 64 bits, and there's
a bug, but you can fix it like this. You've got to modify the following
files in the dssi-vst folder.

  remotepluginclient.cpp
  dssi-vst.cpp
  rdwrops.cpp
  remotevstclient.cpp
  remotepluginserver.cpp

and had this ligne #include stdio.h , save all the files and start a new
compilation.

Regards.

Hi, for 64 bits you've got to compil dssi-vst, which is quite simple.
 Download sources here:
 http://sourceforge.net/projects/dssi/files/dssi-vst/
 cd ==make==sudo make install.

To run a vst, open a terminal, type vsthost your vst, and connect to jack.

 Regards.
 Teza.

Hi, when you run dssi-vst, actually vsthost in a terminal, you've got
full access to the pluging even the the gui if the plugin got one, for
exemple I can run Amplitube with vsthost. for the compil there's no
troubles at all under Hardy, but there's a bug with Karmic, which can be
fix like this

My first attempts compiling dssi-vsti had not been really successful.
The vst integration into lmms had only very basal functions and no
working user interfaces. So I gave up and up to now I run the vst-hosts
as well as my commercial korg and a lot of free plugins in wine. I
connect and combine them over wineasio in jack with genuine linux
applications i.e. ardour, hydrogen, linuxsampler, rackarrack, zynadd
My favorite vsti-hosts are reaper - I abuse it just for this - and a
windows freeware named vsthost by herman seib
http://www.hermannseib.com/vsthost.htm Those settings run tolerably even
for live performance, but maybe I should give dssi-vst a try again. Does
dssi-vst give you full access to vsti's midi controls, menues, presets
and guis? Is dssi-vst ready for this? Has Steinberg made it's Asio stuff
opensource? Or is there a way to run these dlls without using
 proprietary code?

 I use them a lot.
ZynAddSubFx and Bristol are both on my favorite list of
synths/v-inst/fx, but unfortunaly the list is kind'a small if you
 exclude Win-VST.

I havent had any serious problems using them with dssi-vst, but I havent
tested extensively and only one at a time, like XLN addictive drums
for when I practice my e-drums or VoxengoBoogex for guitar.
I have removed Pulse, but other than that, I just run them with vsthost
/_path_to_/vsti.dll and most of them work, If I'm composing/editing I
just load them in my host (XT2) but I like the idea of just clicking on
the drums icon on my desktop and play without having to start my host
 and load/setup the instrument first.

If you have pre-Jaunty, remember that pulseaudio is now enabled by default,

I would consider Karmic's RT kernel VERY stable as it is an official
upstream patch release. I have already played a handful of shows
using this kernel and have not had any kernel-based issues yet (have
been regularly running this RT kernel since mid-alpha stage).

Hi everybody, I think it will be a good idea to tell to the list what
equipment we are using with Ubuntustudio, that will help in coming up

precision, and also for gigantic databases. Selling 64 bit

upgrading their computers... again. I repeat, 64 bit has
practically no use for consumer use or audio recording. Does
 anyone here disagree?

I'm not too familiar with some of the technical details, but I
believe you are correct in saying that, at this point, 64-bit
seems largely useless to the average user, particularly as far
 as audio goes.

When it comes to versions of Ubuntu, I have personally found
that Hardy is far and away the most stable and efficient OS of
the current Ubuntu releases. This applies to my computer,
though, and your mileage may vary. I am looking forward to
Karmic, and hope that it solves some of the many problems I've
been having with the Jaunty RT kernel (and, no, I do not know
how to compile my own kernels. Maybe one day).

Jason, as for a good set-up that gives you no noise, if you're
going to need to buy some kind of pre-amp/DI or
audio-interface as well as a mic, you will have a hard time
keeping it under $200. But it is possible. When I first
started recording, I used a very cheap $60 Behringer mixer
(which came with two channels that could be used as pre-amps,
and phantom power which I did not need at the time.) and a
used $50 EV dynamic mic. I ran the mic into the mixer, and
then ran the mixer's RCA tape-out direclty into my computer's
on-board soundcard, using an RCA to 1/8 cable. Whenever I
listen back to those recordings, I am actually surprised that
they sound fairly decent. I guess the moral of this story is
that $200 won't get you anything 'nice', but it should get you
something that will work, and probably fairly well.

By the way, what equipment do you have right now? That will
help in coming up with recommendations for what to get.

 I'm using a M-Audio Audiophile 2496, it require a little tweaking to
work (specialy on 9.10), but the sound is great and latency is
acceptable, at least on my budget :-)
I guess it's all about priorities, and I'd rather spend my money on
instruments and good mic's (allthou a RME soundcard would be nice...
 *drool*)

Regarding mic's... It's hard to say wich is the best mic for everyone,
some voices actualy sounds better on a SM58 than on a Neumann U87 (my
 personal favorite).
So try them before you buy them, specialy if you buy a used on, I bought
a used U47 and found out that the electronics was toast :-/
That said... I have also been extremly lucky with garagesales, and found
a pair of AKG353 in perfect condition for 20$ :-)

btw. I always use a 32bit version, the 64bit is to immature for my taste
(had lots of problems with wine, alsa and jack) but I test it whenever
theres a new Ubuntu-release. The only place I have expirenced a
remarkable difference between 32 and 64, is when I compile stuf.

Re: xjadeo

2009-07-05 Thread teza
Hi thanks for your help, so that mean, you've got to demux the audio
from the vidéo, if you want to work on it, in Ardour for exemple?

It's not supposed to run with sound. The point is for you to have
another Jack aware application sync with the video and play the sound
back for you (i.e. you import the audio track into an ardour session
and work in ardour on adjusting the audio). Xjadeo itself has no
 audio backend. Hope that helps.
