Great!
So your Firepod works on 64 bit (which is my machine, although it is
intel not AMD)
So that is great. Mine is a Firebox, though I am not sure if it is
before or after. And, in case you missed earlier in the thread it was
working fine in 12.04 Studio.
So, this is leading me to believe it may be the ffado drivers, rather
than qjackctl since you are able to get qjackctl up and running
using firewire. I may try to use an older verion of ffado to see if
that will work, but I sent an e-mail to the ffado user list, and will
wait for a bit to see if anyone there responds before I get into all the
make install stuff :)
Thanks so much for testing this!!

I did pretty much what you described: start qjackctl, select firewire, and
away it goes. I have not done any recording, though, just playback.

I am running 64bit on a computer I made (Gigabyte motherboard running an
AMD Phenom II processor), so it is non-EFI.

It's worth noting that, in my experience, the interfaces that PreSonus made
following the Firepod don't seem to be as compatible with JACK. I once
tried to get an FP10 (which I thought was pretty much the same as a
FirePod) to start up, and could not.

Your device is very close to mine.
I am wondering if I am doing something slightly wrong here...
It is pretty simple to set up the device, so I am not entirely sure what
I could be missing...
So, just for my own sake, could you please tell me the exact steps you
followed to begin using it?

i.e. start qjackctl. select firewire. open recording program. record
music.

Are you using 32bit or 64bit? Are also using a non-EFI machine?

Thanks everyone for helping me trouble shoot this!

2014-04-26 Thread Israel
If someone can use a firewire device, then it must be something more
specific to my setup or device. I wonder if anyone has a similar device
(or even the same device) running in Ubuntu 14.04 (regardless of DE).

As this is GNU/Linux there is always a way to make something work, even
if it means compiling something on my own, hacking around in some code,
hacking around in configuration files, etc..
I am pretty determined to get this to work, so I am willing to try any
other suggestions.
I may try the 32bit live DVD soon... I do wish there was an easy way to
make a bootable USB for this machine... however all Apple computers make
things much harder for the user than necessary (ever changed a hard
drive in an iBook?)

@Kaj I really appreciate your efforts to help me (in all the different
areas you have helped)

@mr. fyfe your energetic sense of humour is wasting your talents. You
should learn a great constructive way to use your mind, and all the
wonderful talents you must have. Surely you are much more intelligent
and have a great creativity that can be channeled into something more
prosperous for you.

I asked in a previous mail if someone else was using firewire devices
with 14.04, and I believe Roberto has answered in his mail below.
All though I'm sure you might have missed that, as others have stated,
please refrain from posting anything that is either irrelevant for this
mail list, or non-constructive.

I would ask you, and anyone else on this mail list who hasn't yet done
so, to read through this page
http://community.ubuntu.com/contribute/support/mailinglists/, especially
the part that deals with mailing list etiquette - in which one is one is
told to observe the Ubuntu Code of Conduct - which you can read about
here http://www.ubuntu.com/about/about-ubuntu/conduct.

During the time I have been list admin, I haven't banned anyone posting
to this list and I'm sure we can all help keeping it that way.

Ok, I only received two mails from him, there's an issue with some
providers, they bounce mails and my providers have high bounce scores. I

I use a Behringer FCA 202 with Ubuntu Studio 14.04 and it works
perfectly. I use it in a MacPro 3.1 with 8Gb ram and the standard Ubuntu
Studio, but with the Unity interface. The XCFE desktop needs lesser ram,
but the Unity interface works better for my needs and the system and web
browser sounds work perfect trought QjackCtl. The Firewire interface
with QjackCtl has only problems if i connect a Firewire 800 card reader.
It hangs if i connect the reader with QjackCtl running. No problem if i
quit it before. I have now zero problems with the sound running Ubuntu.

There's no need to ban somebody just for one bad mail. The OP should get
a chance to apologise and assumed the OP continues this style, setting
the moderation bit might be more useful. Banning isn't that helpful,
since everybody could subscribe again, using another email account. Keep
in mind, we all sometimes misbehave. David should be aware that likely
some experienced users will filter his mails, so assumed he needs help,
he harms himself when continuing using this vocabulary without a reason.

can you check lspci and see if that is a ricoh firewire chipset? those are
(afaik) notoriously bad at supporting linux, and cannot be used in linux. i
had a macbook that had ricoh firewire, and i never had any luck using it

I think you misunderstand somewhat what I am saying here.
Ubuntu Studio 12.04 works with the firewire interface.
Ubuntu Studio 14.04 DOES NOT (at least upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04)
Ubuntu 14.04 DOES NOT
so I am wanting to try Ubuntu 12.04 (NOT studio) to see if I can get it
to work there.
The reason I think this is a bug, is because I expected it to work, but
it did not.
I have done all the normal things to get it to work in 14.04 (adding
myself to the audio group of course, even using realtime in jack and a
lowlatency kernel, installing jack, ffado,etc..).
My thought is that the versions are different (of something important...
like ffado, or jack) and there is some bug that crept for my specific
device.

And sorry for hijacking this thread, as this thread is actually about
Ubiquity freezing during 14.04 install on EFI machines

I do indeed appreciate all your help, thank you again!

you can try "gksudo qjackctl" to troubleshoot permissions errors.. you may
have to add your user to the audio group or other special requirements for
firewire

Hi,
I did try this, and it did not work.
I also tried upgrading the 12.04 to 14.04 and it also did not work.
And by 'did not work' I mean qjackctl wouldn't start in firewire 'mode'
at all.

that everything is worked out with what I am doing right now.. as it is
quite important that it gets finished before trusty is released.
I also wanted to test out Studio and see if it natively supported this
interface (which from Mike's earlier comment) it should. I suppose I
could also upgrade the 12.04 to trusty as well...

Thanks for the tip.
I do think this should be fixed however, if possible for trusty... and
if not trusty then right away for whatever the u codename will be

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Ubiquity hang up 14.04 daily and Beta

2014-04-15 Thread Kaj Ailomaa
Seems that the install will fail under certain precondition, when
loading partitioning and a popup with question marks is shown.

For me, on virtualbox, so far only if a previous EFI installation of
UBuntu Studio 14.04 already exists on the HD.
Installing to an empty HD will work.

Please see mark this bug confirmed if you are affected as well
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1307946

Also, if the install fails under other conditions than mine with the
same symptom (freezes before partitioning and a popup showing question
marks), then please add comments about that also.

I have installed several times with the i386 iso and there have
been some issues, but lately I haven't seen any on my
installations. That said, I haven't run any installation the last
7 days so it might something new that popped up.

Hi,
Hmmm, well something must have changed, as I tried 2 times, and
couldn't get past the odd ? dialog. I tried downloading it 2
times, and running zsync on the last one to hopefully fix it
but it didn't
What could the dialog pop-up be for? Is there some sort of
confirmation dialog? I tried once choosing (selecting and
un-selecting) packages, and once leaving it completely alone.
Both failed. I am on an intel Core 2 (64bit), but I was running

the 32bit (this is a mac with the horrid EFI they have, and it
wont detect a multivolume 64bit disc... or something along those
lines)
So, I was testing the same version/arch you did.
Is there any thing showing up in any of the automatic testing for
the images? (I assume you use a testing mechanism)
Thanks for your help!!

the testing mechanism: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
