Re: Help with WIFI on HP Mini 110-1030CA

2013-07-28 Thread Gustin Johnson
HP loves to put cheap crap in their laptop, chances are you have a crappy
broadcomm wifi adaptor.

>From a command prompt, run the following (there are 3 seperate commands
enclosed in quotes, you do not need the quotes):
"lspci |grep -i net"
"iwconfig"
"lsmod |grep 80211"

On my lenovo t430 with Intel wifi, I get the following:
 lspci |grep -i net
00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82579LM Gigabit Network
Connection (rev 04)
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 (rev
3e)

lsmod |grep 80211
mac80211 627172 1 iwldvm
cfg80211 528535 3 iwldvm,mac80211,iwlwifi

iwconfig
eth0 no wireless extensions.

lono wireless extensions.

virbr0no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:""
  Mode:Managed Frequency:5.18 GHz Access Point: XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX

  Bit Rate=130 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm

  Link Quality=66/70 Signal level=-44 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
  Tx excessive retries:85603 Invalid misc:28 Missed beacon:0

Your HP will be different since they tend to favour the cheap and crappy
BCM- wifi NICs. If it sounds like I strongly dislike HP it is because
I do. The worst laptop I have ever owned was an HP.

Re: Help with WIFI on HP Mini 110-1030CA

2013-07-23 Thread Pete Wright
Don't know if this may make you feel better or just muddy the water
further, but I have had similar problems with more than one HP laptop
(including one mini) with only Windows installed. In fact the first time I
used Linux for work was during a desperate effort to revive the WiFi on an
HP lap. (Linux didn't help with that, but I soon realized I needed to use
Linux more and Windows less, so the effort was not wasted.)
In all cases my final solution was to get a little USB WiFi stick and use
that with the HPs.

If you cannot go into the top panel to ensure that is
activated, and function keys do not work, then go into the Settings
Manager->Users and Groups->Advanced Settings (enter computer's
password)->User Privileges. Check each and every option and then accept.
(If you do not see an Apply or Accept button at the bottom, click on Tab,
then click on Right Arrow, then hit Enter.) Close the Advanced Settings by
hitting Enter, then go back in to make sure that your changes were
accepted. If they are, close out everything, restart your computer, and see
if you then have Wi-Fi connectivity and/or the option to activate same.

If all this does not work, then I'm afraid I am at a loss to help you.
Someone a lot smarter than I will have to step in. But I can tell you that
there is probably some simple solution to this problem (EVERYTHING in Linux
is simple once you know the answer!) so do not give up. There is certainly
a way to have your computer connect to the Internet using Wi-Fi.

Ubuntu Studio is very much just Ubuntu with a certain set of

realtime

It strikes me as odd that I can't use my WIFI on my netbook.
I've tried a few different solutions that I've found through
Google but none of them work. I had WIFI (thats how I
downloaded the ISO). I like the look of Studio (the layout

I got into Photography last year and I've been doing alot of
processing. I liked the nice clean look and packages offered by
Studio. I've also been starting to look into video. The sound
mixing is a nice bonus for my Halloween setup this year (yes I
make my own sound effects tracks :)). Thanks for the Help so far,
I'm new to Linux and, as you can probably tell, don't know much
about it.

Ciao e` successo qualcosa di molto simile anche a me tempo fa. la
stringa "Client name = qjackctl conflits with another running client"
sembra indicare che jack non riesca a connettersi al socket perche` la
scheda audio e` occupata da altri processi. a me e` successo varie volte
rispondo in inglese o tedesco :-S ciao

Re: help, my Jack doesn't work anymore

2012-10-04 Thread Tim Krone
Hi,

sorry I don't understand italian. But I got a similar problem sometime.

Have you ever tried to start jack directly from terminal in verbose mode?
Perhaps there will be some more detailed information.

Another possibility is a kernel update: Perhaps you have a generic kernel
installed that jack won't like for realtime processing. So possibly jack will
start when you disable realtime?

Cheers
Tim

Re: help, my Jack doesn't work anymore

2012-10-02 Thread Beppe Zupa
Ciao,
grazie mille per la risposta.
purtroppo ho già formattato e installato la beta della 12.10 e quindi non
riesco a replicare l'errore.

"Client name = qjackctl conflits with another running client" sembra

2012-09-17 Thread Beppe Zupa
thanks a lot for your reply.
i tried your solution, but nothing is changed.

when i start qjackctl it seems freezed. I can get control of it just only
killing the jackd process. and if i start it again, it launchs jackd, but
it's freezed (until killng jackd).

I'm thinking on a new install of ubuntustudio, but i don't like this
solution :-(

Your card does support 22050Hz? Please try 44100Hz, but first run

jack_control exit
killall -9 -w jackd jackdbus

then run jackd, but add LC=C before the jackd command to force English

LC=C jackd -dalsa -dhw:0 -r44100 -p128 -n2 -Xseq

You don't need to install first Ubuntu and later Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu

On Sun, 2011-04-10 at 20:26 -0400, wfdudley wrote:
> I've given up on expecting bugs to be fixed in my lifetime

I started in November 2003 by buying Suse 9.0 Student Version and a less
good Internet access. Since that time I didn't finished any audio
production in a satisfying way using Linux, but Linux audio made great
strides since that time and I needed to spend money in upgrading my
computer hardware, only because of hardware issues regarding to Linux.

I don't expect far advanced apps, e.g. Rosegarden and Ardour to fit to
my needs, but apps like Muse or Qtractor are shapeable for users with
different needs to that established apps.

Qtractor is one of my favourite apps. If there's a bug, I report it to
the qtractor devel mailing list, resp. to Rui and usually he fix it
within a hour. Rui seems to be 24/7 online.

Of course Rui programs Qtractor for a community and himself and not only
for me, so he e.g. spend his time for automation, while I don't set
great value on automation, but e.g. would like to have a different
management for saving and restoring Qtractor projects.

Anyway, we can

- learn how to program for Linux. Not really an option for me, I was a
coder for audio software on oldish computers and I'm used to program for
non-multitask in Assembler. I don't like C, especially not C on Linux, I
prefer to be a user instead of retraining myself.

- be tough and insist on pointing out issues. This is a balancing act.
I've got a bad record in the Linux community, because I didn't balance
good, OTOH, I was quieter for a while and still will be quieter and I'm
welcome most of the times, regarding to test MIDI stuff. Yes while some
people wish(ed) to ban me other won't miss me.

- win over other people to use Linux (only) too and help them to set up
their machines. So more people with your or my needs will join the Linux
community. Note that bugs are reported and good stuff isn't reported.
Note that the most bad bugs aren't reported, people simply use other
operating systems instead. The coders do not really know what users wish
to have, because the Linux audio community mainly are male nerds.

Another issue is, that the UNIX/LINUX/POSIX religion is a golden calf
and an additional balancing act is needed to handle this. What's
important for a good multiuser system, for office and consumer needs,
doesn't make sense for audio/MIDI workstations all the times. I don't
use the toaster to clean my clothes and I don't use the washing machine
to roast bread. A sledgehammer and a screwdriver for watchmakers for a
multitool isn't a usable combination, if somebody does need both, two
separated tools are needed.

Re: help, jackd crashing, don't know why

2011-04-10 Thread wfdudley
When jackd crashes on a freshly booted machine, the problem isn't left over
files in /dev/shm, the problem is PA allocating all that memory in the
first place.
Since I've given up on expecting bugs to be fixed in my lifetime, and I had a
DIMM lying about, adding memory was cheap 'n' easy.

I did nukem PA from my laptop, it won't work with Skype. I did it by renaming
a binary somewhere. crude but effective.

I really have given up on expecting bug fixes. Audacity won't
show an input
selector control, hasn't for several years, the audacity guys know
about it but don't
seem to care. So I don't expect to ever record using audacity. Oh well.

Well, I was not exactly saying that the problem was lack of RAM although
more RAM is better of course. I guessed you had 512 MB because of this
message:

Memory locking is unlimited - this is dangerous. You should probably
alter the line:
 @audio   -  memlockunlimited
in your /etc/limits.conf to read:
 @audio   -  memlock354993

This suggestion on the memlock limit is 75% of your total RAM, in kb.

The real problem is not the lack of memory but pulseaudio locking it.
Manually cleaning /dev/shm is a must if you have little RAM and even
with 1 GB you could have problems.. Avoiding pulseaudio althogether can
be a good idea or not, depending on your needs.

I am not sure if pulseaudio should be left out of US or not, but this
bug[1] is a major drawback. It affects many more than 4 people yet is
marked as "won't fix".

I never disabled PA myself, for 64 Studio 3.3, based on Ubuntu, it's

Perhaps some of those howtos will work?!

Mark or anybody else, do you know how to disable PA for Maverick GNOME

I guess I'll try one of those howtos within the next days.

The polyp grabs at everything to fit to coders needs and distribution
needs, but it high and mighty ignores the users needs. Thank you very
much desktop environments for switching to PolypAudio.

On my Maverick install I don't have audio for 'desktop' apps (tested
with Youtube by Firefox only), there's only audio for JACK clients.

Usually this will solve the issue:

edubuntu@edubuntu:~$ cat /usr/share/alsa/cards/ICE1712.conf
#
# Configuration for the ICE1712 (Envy24) chip
#
[snip]

ICE1712.pcm.front.0 {
@args [ CARD ]
@args.CARD {
type string
}
type route
ttable.0.0 1
ttable.1.1 1
slave.pcm {
type hw
card $CARD
}
 fix PA issue
slave.format S32_LE
slave.channels 10
##
}
[snip]

For this install it doesn't.

Paternalism doesn't stop, X became a PITA for tube monitors, the
kernel's default for CPU frequency scaling is 'corrected', so we'll save
around 1 W, for the coast of xruns all the time.

edubuntu@edubuntu:~$ hwinfo --cpu | grep Clock
  Clock: 1000 MHz
  Clock: 1000 MHz
edubuntu@edubuntu:~$ cat /boot/config-2.6.33.7.2-rt30 | grep
CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_PERFORMANCE=y
# CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_POWERSAVE is not set
# CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_USERSPACE is not set
# CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_ONDEMAND is not set
# CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_CONSERVATIVE is not set
edubuntu@edubuntu:~$ sudo cpufreq-selector -g performance
[sudo] password for edubuntu:
^C
edubuntu@edubuntu:~$ hwinfo --cpu | grep Clock
  Clock: 2100 MHz
  Clock: 2100 MHz

What script does set frequency scaling to ondemand? This wasn't my
choice.

I installed wanderlust as mail client and emacs replaced my nautilus
default editor gedit, without my permission to do this.

Mouse wheel seldom works on my Maverick install.

Often grub.cfg is overwritten by a package without permission to do
that.

The distro is working against my needs. I set up my Linux, but Ubuntu
re-edits some of those settings, by completely useless settings.

I'm near to switch to another distro.

Regarding to PulseAudio this won't be a help, but at least the rest
would be ok.

Before I do upgrades, I backup my Maverick install.

Regarding to the needs of the user, the distro shouldn't try to be
smarter as the user is. Ubuntu is MY TOOL, I do know what I do need and
what I don't need.

Pardon for running of the track.

What exactly are the advantages of PA in Ubuntu Studio, resp. for a DAW?

PA needs to be turned of by default.

2 Cents,

Ralf

I think you have little RAM, 512 MB or so?

Check "ls /dev/shm". The problem could have to do with this:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/jack-audio-connection-kit/+bug/491329

(This bug affects many more than 4 people even if they don't know, which
is the worst case).

A ver, yo soy de México (sorry at the list for reply in Spanish) asumo que

¿No sé

Re: HELP! Understanding MIDI

2010-01-20 Thread Neil Jensen
I know for me, when I hook that stuff up most of the needed connections
system wide are already established. On the audio connections in Jack,
my system requires the addition of ports 3 of the system audio to
connect with Qsynth...which I see you haven't mentioned and is
necessary, zynaddsubfx, hydrogen etc..Also I need to coonect my system
audio captures on the "out connections" side with system port 8 on the
"in connections" side. On the alsa menu I need to addmy keyboard ont
the "out" side to rosegarden, record in" on the "in" side. I also need
to connect my keyboard on the "out" side to each of the following on the
"in" side:Zynaddsubfx, Fluidsynth, hydrogen, etcI don't think I am
forgetting anything. I also didn't know what the Edirol USB piece is
that you described.

Let us try it:

give jackd/rt is running sufficiently the next stepps should be:

1: connect the edirol and start it with jack
2: connect the kawai and have a look at
qjackctl/connections/MIDI/AlsaMIDI. You may as well use patchage for
that, it is more or less the same as the connection-tab of qjackctl.
3:start zynadd and look, that its output goes to the edirols input in
qjackctl, its MIDI-ports show up in the AlsaMIDI-tab
4:start rosegarden and do a rightklick at the head of the first track
choose "General MIDI device" and hev a look to the area left of the editor.
5: there should be a section named "recording-filter" look, if you can
set device and channel here, now go to the MIDI-panel of qjackctl again
6: if the kawai is listed here as an individual device connect its
MIDI-out to Rosegarden record_in, if not, try MIDI-through of the Edirol

7:arm the track mentioned before for recording and chack, if zyn answers
your keystrokes. If so, you can begin your recording right now, if not,
connect the kawai-out to zynadds in first, only then fiddle with the
"recording-filter"-settings of rg.

You may also have a look at "Manage Midi-devices" in rg's "Studio"-menu.

good luck ;-)

Hey, thanks for the tip on getting Audacity to see the S/PDIF inputs on
my Delta 66 card (as noted in the link). It's a bit of a klunky
solution but quite workable, and solves my immediate needs.

And thanks for all the encouragement toward using JACK. When I can pull
it off, I'm going to build or re-purpose a separate box just for
recording work, put my Delta 66 card in it, and put Ardour and JACK,
among other software, on it.

It should work, I figure.. But it does have AMI "made for vista" BIOS..
Or is it Phoenix that is trying to ruin the linux commuity..

As for the Dimension 9150, it isn't like my old XPS B800r that had the
proprietary ram and won a 10 from Maximum PC in 2000.. This 9150, is all
standard parts.. I bought it on ebay from someone (unaffiliated with Dell)
it arrived MB DOA, Dell transferred the warranty and sent a guy out to
replace the MB. You just have to convince the tech support that it is
definately DOA.. For the record my B800r was DOA, and they replaced MB on
that too. However, I've heard Dell laptops suck.. Note, Dell has a deal with
Canonical to make Ubuntu based netbooks. Supposedly Dell's CEO uses Ubuntu
(typical linux usage rumors). The 9150 has a huge latch for opening the
case, and a big latch for unlocking all the card slots, it takes me abotu 30
seconds to swap out a card, plus space for 6 drives ( 2 internal, 4 front
external, front CPU fan, heat sink and chute), 4 sata connectors, about 6
USB2's in back and 2 in front. It feels solid, not flimsy like some
dekstops.

This video shows the internals:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3us514PJuM

I have a NVidia 9800GT on it, and Ubuntu Studio 9.04 dual booted with XP
(for games, don't trust it for anything else). In wine I've played the
entire Valve Orange Box (HL2, Ep1 and Ep2, Portal, and TF2 plays), Oblivion
(not far enough into it), Prey (it sucks but I completed it), COD 4 (I'm
almost to the end of the game), Flatout 2 (completed), and I just got
Fallout 3 working (okay if you don't mind 3D artifacts like mispatched point
clouds, missing eyes and heads). Quake Wars is native of course, and Voip
works, so .. But if you like pinball, there is an installer for future
pinball on wine (get the "Black Knight"). Believe it or not I have videos
demonstrating all of those games (and the KISS, Globe Trotters and Elton
John pinball machines) I want to find some tables with the subsurface
magnets.

I have Ubuntu 9.04 on my IBM T30 (IBM makes excellent laptops, too bad
Lenovo has the ball. My Acer Aspire has Ubuntu 9.04 and XP (I got the XP
model because it seems you need more memory to run Windows and you get a
hard drive, while on the linux one you only get a solid state drive. Though
I can only stand laptops with the track-points *and three thumb buttons)..
Touch pads must die a cruel death.

Music from my T30 with Jack and ZynAddSubFx (goto 5:38, Tomita-ish improv on
a 5 dollar midiboard):

Some sound routing with my YPT-300, JackRack and ZynAddSubFx:

Second half of this video demonstrates Bristol (vintage synth emulator, not
as good as ZynAddSubFX, but controllable via Jack):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyPSPTSFE3A

Jack is not really reliable enough to use live, but it can be used for
recording work. When I do a big setup it tends to drop the minute it hits
quite a few Xruns, I don't know if that's Jack or ZynAddSubFx (very
unstable). LMMS has Zyn as a builtin module. I want to do a remake of "Mr.
Blue Sky" with a vocoder with Ardour.. Sometime.. Why I'm up here is to
figure out how to get dual cores to work well with Jack because it seems to
prefer single cores. That's why I'm building the EE machine.. After this
letter I'm going to go over and attack it, see if I can't get it going.

Nvidia doesn't have a good reputation for cooperation with F/OSS.
They've made some progress, but I don't know if I'd choose an Nvidia MB

Oh and, if you format your gentoo partition, don't do a left resize with
gparted, it will take forever (without progress feedback) and if you cancel
it it will corrupt both partitions. If you got Gentoo by choice (who does?),
sorry.. I've thought about learning gentoo just as a learning experience,
but in a sun virtualbox. I wonder if there is plans to turn jack into a
kernel module.

Also google "dell financial services" you will find the place to buy that
Dell dimension 9150. The case alone is worth 280 dollars.. A massive latch
to open the case, and a latch to remove cards, sata, 2.8Ghz Pentium D.. It's
what I do most all my tutorials on.. I demo'd Flatout 2 (game) on wine,
while recording the video with gtk-record my desktop at 25fps with this
machine. You'll have to change the power supply to get a Nvidia 9800GT.
BTW, you can use blender for basic video work. I have tutorials on that..

You can pratically trace my progress with Ubuntu from the time I began to

not for wusses.. I challenge anyone to sit through 400 of my videos.. Like

I'm making a machine just for this, it's also not for wusses either :^)
though it looks simple than swapping out LCD's on a laptop (yes, I've never
put one together).. Tiger direct is selling refurbished Nvidia i750
motherboards. That's the two slots sli with heat pipes (don't ask me what
they are cooling) and potential to use fast DDR2 (I got some 1066Mhz ram).
You only need about a gig, Ubuntu hardly ever hits the 1 gig limit. And a
650Watt power supply in case you want to get two 9800Gt's, which is about 80
bucks apiece now. Also Tiger Direct is selling some Pentium Extreme Edition
CPU's (Overclockable 3.73 Ghz 64-bit Pentium-D's) for a hundred dollars a
pop. The reason I went on this "build my own system" quest was that I got
the EE for a upgrade of my 2.8Ghz PD, and found out it's incompatible.. So I
made a money losing PC constructing learning experience of it. Incidently
Tiger Direct is also selling a Quad core AMD barebones kit for 177 dollars
now, but you want clock cycles (faster bus bandwidth = less latency). Yess
I've had assembly programming and digital electronics, and I haven't built
my own PC. Dell is also selling Dell Dimension 9150's (I have one, and I
highly recommend it) for 280 dollars (go to dell financial services).

If you separated your home from root partition, you can install ubuntu and
not lose your home accounts.. That's what I do to permit myself to move
between versions of Ubuntu without losing my home account.. If you didn't,
get a second drive, you can use this command to backup your home partition:

tar -cf - /home | (cd /the/other/drive ; tar -xf - )

It's better than "cp -r" .

Reformat (into / and /home partitions) with Ubuntu 9.04 and add Ubuntu
Studio (and apt-get install). You can also use "gparted" from the Ubuntu
live disk to resize your partition for gentoo, and install Ubuntu on the new
partition, and copy your account folders over to ubuntu (and erase gentoo,
:^o ). If you have windows, I wonder if Wubi permits you to get a RT kernel
and Ubuntu Studio?

I understand that JACK is a powerful and versatile tool when working
with audio in Linux. I'm not apprehensive about learning it - it's just
a matter of time. I use Gentoo Linux on my desktop and on two servers I
run, and no one who is apprehensive about learning new technologies
should _ever_ use Gentoo Linux on a desktop system and expect to get
away with it! Gentoo Linux ain't for wussies ;-)

I do, however, have priorities on my time, and was looking for a simple
solution to what seemed like a simple problem in pursuit another
objective which was "at the top of the pile", so to speak. I'll happily
put learning to use JACK on my TODO list for when I have some time to
spend on it.

It's even put me in mind of setting up a separate Linux box just for
audio (and possibly AV) work. Gentoo Linux has a sub-distribution
explicitly designed for AV work. Ardour has been moved to this package
class and isn't even available for the Linux I use on my desktop system.

much with Audacity, from the link which Asmo Koskinen posted to this

It might be a driver issue with your particular kernel or alsa. It may
be worth getting a newer kernel (I personally use the latest kernel.org
kernel that has a corresponding rt patch) or a newer version of alsa (I
would recommend the kernel first).

No idea since I don't use Gentoo. I can say that I have had good

Yes, I probably need to allocate some time for it, but that's not
today's job, nor next week's job. I just wanted to copy some audio at
the best possible quality without losing my Marantz EDL marks. I
condensed the songs using EDL marks from a 5 hour rehearsal down into 2
hours of pure music for practice and wanted to reproduce this work
(which took me quite a while) digitally. In the short run, the small
loss of quality imposed by the D->A->D conversion isn't worth the extra
time it would take to re-edit the bare MP3 file on the recorder using
Audacity. It's just a practice session, not a production recording!
But it's the principle of the thing. I want to be able in the future to
pull the S/PDIF stream from the recorder to the computer and work with
it.

I actually _do_ have ardour (v0.9_beta28) on the box but haven't used
it. It looks quite nice. For some reason there doesn't seem to be a
current version of ardour in the portage tree in Gentoo anymore. Maybe
I need the professional audio portage overlay for Gentoo.

The recording device can also be selected from Device Toolbar in
Audacity. Selecting ALSA:spdif doesn't get me anywhere. The selection
that fetches the Delta 66's first two ADC outputs into Audacity is
labeled "ALSA: M Audio Delta 66: ICE1712 multi (hw:1,0)" This is the
only recording input listed as available to Audacity from the Delta 66.
These correspond to the first two physical (analog) input jacks on the
breakout box. I haven't had any luck changing the audio stream
delivered from the various controls on bus channels exposed in
alsamixer, envy24control or Gnome volume control.

Yes, the CLI-based alsamixer seems, in some ways, to be the best of the
several mixers and control UIs available for the Delta 66, although
envy24control isn't bad. I've played with settings for the card in
alsamixer a good deal.

Thanks.

Re: Help with M-Audio Delta 66 and ALSA

2009-08-14 Thread Lindsay Haisley
Thanks to those who replied to my question.

I believe I already have a realtime kernel on this system (it's running
kernel v2.6.23) but in any event I don't need that level of performance
at this time. The box handles normal audio tasks just fine and tracks
single streams of audio at CD sampling rates without a problem.

I don't have the time to learn a new technology here. I've spent about
3 hours reading and experimenting with JACK and ALSA today, to no avail
(on top of untold hours I've spent in the past trying to come up to
speed on ALSA and its components and get similar stuff to work). I'm
just going to have to put up with the D->A->D conversion for the time
being if I want to input from the digital recorder and screw the IEC958
channel transfer, or else sacrifice the editing I've done with Marantz
EDL marks on the recorder and redo it in Audacity. I was hoping someone
on this list had encountered this problem before and could give me some
quick tips for accessing the signal from the S/PDIF input on the Delta
66 card, but I don't have time to jack around (pun intended ;). It
really seems as if this sort of thing should be easy. Card has input -
program needs stream from card's input - hit a switch, make a patch,
and/or turn up a fader and it should be a done deal. Oh well

Thanks again.

Here is something to read for start.

http://linux-sound.org/knowing-jack.html

http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/software-ecology-rui-nuno-capela

http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/little-boxes-audio-production-hardware-studio-dave

Dave use Delta 66 and jackd every day.

Next thing is that you need real time kernel, if you start to use jackd.
Here for Gentoo.

http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/sound/realtime.xml
-

I do use Delta 66 (http://wiki.ubuntu-fi.org/Ubuntu_Studio) but I do not
use digital ins/outs, just analog ones (break out box). I do have Echo
AudioFire 4 firewire soundcard, too.

I do everything with jackd (both Delta 66 and AudioFire 4).

I do not have any digital recorder to put in Delta 66 and I do not use
Gentoo, so sorry for that, I can't help more here.

Best Regards Asmo Koskinen.

How would I use JACK? I'm not familiar with it. Does it have a UI of
any kind? Is there a HOWTO somewhere on using it?

The system in question is using Gentoo, not Ubuntu, and there's an
alsa-jack media plugin installed (although it's an old version and no
longer available as such, and may have been rolled into the alsa-utils
package).

I've not found envy24control particularly logical or useful, but it does
give me some idea of signals present on the card.

I've never needed to use envy24control, but I'm guessing that any sound

There is really hard to read numbers on the output jacks. You'll have to

Ok. So, how would I go about determining which output is the default
output to connect my speakers to? My speakers will do either analog or
digital. Currently I have the speakers connected to the SPDIF out.

I did just find a How-to on configuring JACK with a Delta 44. So, when
I get home I can go through those steps and see how that works. Maybe
I just need to try connecting the speakers to the analog out see if
that works.

Thanks for the pointers. I hope to have this working soon.

I don't think any configuration is needed. By default alsa will send
everything that would have gone to the on board sound card to pcm0 and pcm1.
Also, everything should show up fine under jack. I've had a 1010lt for 3

both the on board sound card and the 1010.

The above info looks right.

I have noticed the changes to SAMBA recently and there were enough
quirks to drive me to use NFS. I actually get faster transfer speeds on
average from it. Though I *think* SAMBA beat out a bit with lots of
small files.

Just my 2 cents.

What happens when you try:

This is an example from my /etc/fstab. I have the noauto set since this

If you type exit at the initramfs prompt does the machine successfully
boot? If so, are these HDs SATA? If so you may need to edit your
/boot/grub/menu.lst and add rootdelay=90 to the end of kernel line.
You can try a different number other than 90, maybe start with 30, but
from what I've experienced, 90 worked for me and I've seen others use
120.

My guess is the SATA controller is not initializing fast enough and so
the boot partition on the HD is not available soon enough. The
rootdelay will pause the boot process to allow the controller to
initialize.

May help and is worth a try to see if this fixes the problem.

Good luck,
Brian

You can also hit Alt+F1 to kill the plash during boot up, that will at least
let you see the output and perhaps a more productive error message.

Although, I'm inclined to agree with most here; it sounds like there was a
problem with the installation due to the presence of another hard drive. While
this shouldn't be an issue (normally), sometimes it occurs for various
reasons.

You may also want to try posting in the Ubuntu forums, there's one specific to
installation troubles. There's a huge community of people there that are
always willing to help.

Re: Help!!!

2008-12-23 Thread Det
Hola Cristian,

this seems to be a very well known problem with Ubuntu
8.XX series - I shortly ran into it when I tried out 8.04,
where the Live CD did not even boot on my laptop.

No one really told about the problems, and there may
be some different which causes Ubuntu to jump into the
BusyBox - but many solutions are suggested if you google
for "initramfs" or (better) "BusyBox".
It may be related to the detection of the boot partition,
which may possibly fail due to HD setup problems.

One thread to start with is here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=765195

It mostly means changing the boot options, which you
can do in the boot menu after pressing F6.

What you should do is removing the "quiet" and perhaps
the "splash" option, so you get a more verbose boot
output which can give a hint to your problem.

For further help try the ubuntu forums themselves,
as it is not a studio related problem, aso outside
this specialised forum here you may find a broader
resource of expertise regarding that HD/boot stuff.

Hope that helps.

Hej!:

I'm a brand new Ubuntu's last version user. I decided to install it to get
involved into these Linux Plataform OS.

I have an Intel processor: 2.13 GHz

Memory: 750 Mb

64 Mb video card

I have Windows XP into one of my HD, I have 2 of them, 80 Gb each one. I
installed Ubuntu in the empty one HD. From an ISO image I had downloaded from
Ubuntu's Official Page.

After having downloaded the image, I checked it by comparing it by reading the
hashes, it matched succesfully!. Then I burned it up!, I installed by using a
Cd.

The installation was completely succesfull.

But...when I rebooted my PC (the Cd was previously removed), when i picked up
Ubuntu as my OS at starting up...there a message like (initramfs) and a space
waiting for me to enter a command. Why? What did it happen? Does always Ubuntu
behave this way? Does it have graphic interface??? No?

I trusted Ubuntu, I mean I wanted a safe OS, but I need some help, so
please...reply me soonn.

Thank you!.

Cristian.

Re: help with Side Chain Compression

2008-10-02 Thread adam faranda
Yeah, you can do it entirely in ardour; I put the compressor on it's own
bus (SC1 -- 2 channels -- aux for the side chain, and one
channel for compression) and had my drum track and a constant volume sine
tone on separate mono tracks. I routed the drums into the side chain input,
and the sine tone into the main input and Lo and behold, the drum track did
indeed modulate the amplitude of the sine tone, albeit somewhat weakly.
However now its just a matter of playing with parameters to get the right
sound; I may also try doubling the compression by chaining two instances of
SC1 together.

Hello,

I would recommend an RME Multiface with either a PCMCIA or ExpressCard
host card.
I'm using it live recording 18 (8 analog line level + 8 ADAT + 2 S/PDIF)
tracks at once without a glitch plus it's a nice extension to digital
consoles.
I also use a Digiface with the same host cards (I have a PCI version in
my desktop and a PCMCIA in my laptop) with 3 Octamic II for full 26
tracks (24 Mic inputs + 2 S/PDIF) live recordings.

The only addition you'll have to get to have these working in
UbuntuStudio is the not-included alsa-firmwares package which contains
the non-free firmware needed for the external interface to work.
I may share the one I make for myself on my professional website at the
beginning of next year.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
