  3. Select the driver and choose "Activate".

  What happens: An authentication alert appears saying "System policy
  prevents installation/removal of device drivers".

  What should happen: The alert for letting you do something shouldn't
  claim that system policy prevents it from being done at all.

  Following the example of Ubuntu Software Center, the text could read
  "To install or remove device drivers, you need to authenticate.".

  when I try to connect to an existing Ubuntu One account, the
  ubuntuone-sso-client dialog shows some untranslated strings, even if
  these strings have been translated since last release. I found those
  untranslated strings while trying the beta version

  In particular, the strings are:
  - the dialog title "Connect to %(app_name)s"
  - the title inside the dialog that is the same as the previous string (I 
guess)
  - the text inside the fields to insert the email and the password: "Email 
address" and "Password"
  - the link "I've forgotten my password"

  I attach a screenshot of the problem.

No, Google Instant search behaves the same, because the input method
engine (ibus in this case) does not submit the string to the application
(the browser in the case of Google) until you tell it to do so (by
pressing Space or Enter).
In your case, Google starts to search on the first three letters, since
the forth one has not been submitted to the browser yet, so Google
cannot know about it. It can only guess.

What you want is a feature request, not a bug. And it's not Unity's
fault, but the input method engine and more importantly the input method
modules we use are not designed for this. There are possibilities to
have the same behavior, however, at least for Chinese: use one of the
ibus-table-* input methods, which are the old style input methods, where
you have to select every single character and submit them separately to
the application. By doing this, you can have the same function: Unity
begins to search with the first character. But most Chinese users
nowadays don't want to select every single character manually any more,
but enjoy the intelligent input methods which detect and assemble the
complete sentence with their internal logic.

No, it's not Ubuntu's fault. The input methods we use are not designed
for this, on any Linux distribution. The input methods on Windows and
Mac work differently than the ones we are using.

You may want to submit a feature request to upstream ibus, and more
specifically to the intelligent input methods, like ibus-pinyin,
ibus-sunpinyin, ibus-chewing and ibus-anthy (and maybe others), if you
really care about this issue. I'm not sure however, if other Chinese and
Japanese users agree with you. ;)

Unity must show and search the letter(string) even it's not complete.

Did you tried Google using Instant Search(default setting)?
Google Instant Search show and search with whole incomplete string even you 
didn't enter, space, type next character and so on.
As you see attached image from Koichi, there's 4 letters but not completed.
Google start to search it using 4 letters, but Unity didn't try to search it.

Yes, I know CJK users "can" search with CJK letters and input method.
But it's really annoying to press lots of keys for find 2 letters or press 
enter several times.
Also, it's too unfamiliar to people who use Unity first.
Because Windows and Mac doesn't have this problem it can even make Ubuntu's

It's not a translation mistake. The current translation from 2008-12-02
in Launchpad reads "Mathematischer WYSIWYG-Texteditor mit TeX-
Schriften". I can see the wrong translation in Ubuntu Software-Center
though. Maybe the translation has been fixed and the package
descriptions haven't been updated since then? Anybody seeing this in
Oneiric?

@Martin: just checked, we have approximately 30 complete translations, and the 
4 new strings would require translations in at least these languages, and maybe 
the better strings are not worth breaking the translations, so I think we can 
wait until OO is released, and merge the new strings afterwards.

strings and thus breaks translations, and we are past UIF, I subscribed
the ubuntu translators for their input. Do you think the benefit of
better strings outweighs breaking translations here, and do you think we
can catch up with the translations quickly enough?

they are correct with regards to the plural form, yes, I was pointing
to the fact that these:

Try the %(amount)d item that matches
in software not maintained by Canonical.
Try the %(amount)d items that match
in software not maintained by Canonical.

end with a full-stop, while these don't:

Try the %(amount)d item that matches
in software not maintained by Canonical
Try the %(amount)d items that match
in software not maintained by Canonical

and they are basically the same. Having them more consistent, means
that there will be only one entry to translate for us instead of two.

The same almost applies here too, with these:

Try the item in %(category)s that matches
Try the %(n)d items in %(category)s that match

And these:

Try the item in %(category)s that matches.
Try the %(n)d items in %(category)s that match.

The difference is in the full-stop at the end of the sentence, and in
this case the use of / instead of : in the href field.
Don't know if that is a GTK2/3 difference for hrefs.

  strings that are inconsistent, resulting in duplicated translation
  messages, or strings that are not really clear from an i18n/l10n point
  of view.

  The inconsistent strings follows:

  Try the %(amount)d item that matches in 
software not maintained by Canonical.
  Try the %(amount)d items that match in 
software not maintained by Canonical.

  Try the %(amount)d item that matches in 
software not maintained by Canonical
  Try the %(amount)d items that match in 
software not maintained by Canonical

  The latter are located in:
  ../softwarecenter/ui/gtk3/widgets/searchaid.py
  The former in:
  ../softwarecenter/ui/gtk/softwarepane.py

  I don't know which one is the blessed way of ending the sentence, but having 
only one could be interesting.
  Also, on similar strings, I noticed that the href in one case ended with a 
slash "/" while here with the colon ":". I report the strings for reference:

Matthew: inconsistent here means that the strings are almost identical.
If they were, we would not need to translate them twice. Can they be
made identical, or that little difference really means so much?

mean by "inconsistent"?

"ETA: %s" shouldn't be in the UI at all. It looks like it's used only in
the GTK2 UI, so maybe it can just be removed.

"Modify Your %s Review" probably should be just "Edit".

Title:
  Unity dash file search returns relevant files and folders but not all
  as I expect.

Bug description:
  I created 1 new file named “通信传染” and 1 new folder named “通信传” on the
  Desktop. Searching for “通” in the 'dash' (Super + F) returns 0 match.
  I expect those 2 files should appear in the search result.

  Searching for “下载” in the 'dash' (Super + F) returns the “Downloads”
  folder as expected.

  Searching for “文件” for “Documents” returns the “Documents” folder and
  2 other documents I just created. However, there is also “文” in the
  home folder and in File System name in Chinese but they are not shown
  in the search result. I think the home folder should be shown, I am
  not sure about the file system.

Setting this to fix released, as this does not happen with update-manager on 
oneiric with translations without parameter placeholders, tried the 
translations without the %s for the "last updated %s hour" and "last updated %s 
day" ago strings (singular forms). The translations which do not have the 
placeholder are : eu, et, he, ar. If you still experience this issue, feel free 
to reopen this bug by setting its status to new, and describe in a comment the 
update-manager version you are using, and the output of the locale terminal 
command.
