[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1482269] Re: Call and Message translation in Spanish should be verbs

2015-08-14 Thread David Planella
Note that this potentially affects all languages. I had to correct the
Catalan translations too. Not sure if the initial translators did not
have the translator comment or if they ignored it.

I also noticed that things like:
- Placed
- Missed

were wrongly translated, and I think such strings would also benefit
from a translator comment.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1474944] Re: Settings Display results from SCOPE is not translated

2015-08-03 Thread David Planella
A call was sent to translators on the 16th of June [1], and the upstream
project is translated into 23 languages already:

https://translations.launchpad.net/unity-scopes-shell/trunk

It seems like the target languages for bq are covered there too.

Depending on whether the translations are shipped in a click package or
as a .deb package, the developer will need to do some work to integrate
and ship the translations.

Looking at https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/wily/+source/unity-
scopes-shell it seems it's shipped as a .deb package, in which case, I'd
recommend using the same setup as other scopes shipped by default. In
summary, it's about ensuring that the .deb package generates a .pot file
on build, which boils down to:

1. Add X-Ubuntu-Use-Langpack: yes to debian/control's source record
2. Use dh_translations to generate a POT file during the build process.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1478040] Re: Number of strings still in English instead of being in Russian

2015-07-24 Thread David Planella
While using screenshots might be the quickest way for the reporter to
file a bug, it can be a tedious job for translators to open each
screenshot and do the research of where strings come from.

As with any other bug, it would be useful to break down the report per
app, rather than having a single huge bug report containing everything.
It comes down to good bug reporting practice, whereby the more
information added and research done by the reporter, the easier it will
be for the developer (or translator) to fix it.

As the first step, would it be possible to get a list of untranslated
strings per app in the bug description? E.g.

# Ubuntu System Settings
- Untranslated message 1
- Untranslated message 2

although soon it will be upgraded to

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1359153] Re: YouTube labels and categories are not localized

2014-09-30 Thread David Planella
So there seem to be 2 issues here:

- Missing translatable strings: might be either because they're not marked for
translation in the code, or because the .pot file is not up-to-date
- Translations not committed: (and perhaps not shipped). Someone with
permissions needs to:
  1. Go to
https://translations.launchpad.net/unity-scope-youtube/14.10/+link-translations-branch
  2. Set the value to ~unity-api-team/unity-scope-youtube/14.10

We've got a new show coming up in June: Mobile Asia Expo, which is an
event much like the past Mobile World Congress. There it will be key
to not only show off core apps, but also to display their native
language support, in particular for Simplified Chinese and other
  languages/scripts used across Asia.

In order for our translators to be able to do their work, we'll need
the translatable messages to be up-to-date. This effectively means:

  - Ensuring all visible messages in the app are marked for translation (i.e.
enclosed in i18n.tr() calls)
  - Updating the po/*.pot files as described in the README.translations or
po/README.translations files
  - Committing and pushing the changes to Launchpad

From then on, translators can take over :)

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1372776] [NEW] Need translator comments for Calling line... strings

2014-09-23 Thread David Planella
Public bug reported:

Translators are having trouble understanding the context and thus being
able to translate the following strings:

- Calling Line Presentation
- Calling Line Restriction
- Connected Line Presentation
- Connected Line Restriction

I'd suggest to add a translator comment explaining what they are and
where they appear. A translator comment is simply a regular code comment
put above the line containing the translatable text. They are then
extracted from the code and shown for context to translators in
Launchpad.

E.g.

// TRANSLATORS: this means X and appears in Y
text: i18n(Calling Line Presentation)

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1372061] [NEW] SMS notification: time format not translatable

2014-09-21 Thread David Planella
Public bug reported:

See the attached screenshot. The time for the notification seems to be
hardcoded to hh:mm - mm, d. This works well for the US, but it's not a
format that is used in all other countries. In Spain, for example, the
date would rather be d mm.

The time format needs to be marked for translation.

Not sure from which project the notifications come from, for some reason
I seem to remember they were moved to u-s-s, but if it's the wrong

  languages/scripts used across Asia.

In order for our translators to be able to do their work, we'll need
the translatable messages to be up-to-date. This effectively means:

  - Ensuring all visible messages in the app are marked for translation (i.e.
enclosed in i18n.tr() calls)
  - Updating the po/*.pot files as described in the README.translations or
po/README.translations files
  - Committing and pushing the changes to Launchpad

From then on, translators can take over :)

  How to reproduce:

  1. Install Ubuntu Touch
  2. Set environment to Japanese at first boot
  3. Reboot system (option)
  4. Check whether a glyph come from Japanese font

  Expected result:
Use Japanese gothic font (Droid Sans Japanese), and no Mojibake.

  Actual result:
Use AR PL Ukai CN (Chinese serif font), and some glyphs are missing.
  Please refer attached image.

  Other information from phablet-shell:

ukai.ttc: AR PL UKai CN Book

= Both of ukai and droid sans have U+97F3,
all results of default lang (ie. LANG=ja), lang=ja, lang=en is valid.

That won't work well for at least Serbian, because day names need to
be put into declinations when used with every instead of the
  generally used nominative declination.

I am sure other languages would be affected as well.

There'd be more problems like these in the calendar app, but proposing
solutions would require careful analysis that I lack the time for
right now. As a general rule, expanding all composition into fully
spelled out sentences is much better, even if a bit more verbose.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1343129] Re: Department names are not translatable

2014-09-09 Thread David Planella
James, now that the bug has been committed, where can translators submit
translations for the department names? Can we use Launchpad Translations
as the rest of the phone packages? I'd be more than happy to help
setting that up.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1357642] Re: [weather] Rain, snow, and chance are not translatable

2014-08-16 Thread David Planella
Please note that it's not a bug in Launchpad. The issue is that xgettext
extracts the string and interprets it as a format string %c:

#, c-format
msgid % chance
msgstr

Then Launchpad displays it and does error checking interpreting it as a
format string, as marked in the .pot fie #, c-format. I believe one
way to work around this is to mark the original string as %% chance
(see the double percentage mark), but I've not tried it myself.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1350544] Re: Some translations are not loaded

2014-08-06 Thread David Planella
This might be caused by language packs not having been updated. New
language packs should be uploaded in the next 1 or 2 images, and then
this bug can be reassessed.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1353226] Re: The spanish translation for system-settings is too long

2014-08-06 Thread David Planella
Indeed, I agree with mpt on this one, we cannot go chasing all wrapping
translations and fix them, especially because that would break
translations in the future if there are any layout changes. The
wrapping/layout needs to be fixed in whichever UX component is
displaying the strings.

Unity8 on Ubuntu Touch doesn't load Japanese font in Japanese
  environment.

  How to reproduce:

  1. Install Ubuntu Touch
  2. Set environment to Japanese at first boot
  3. Reboot system (option)
  4. Check whether a glyph come from Japanese font

  Expected result:
Use Japanese gothic font (Droid Sans Japanese), and no Mojibake.

  Actual result:
Use AR PL Ukai CN (Chinese serif font), and some glyphs are missing.
  Please refer attached image.

  Other information from phablet-shell:

  $ strings /proc/`pidof unity8`/environ | grep 'LANG\|LC'

= It seems that LANG env is vallid.

For 音 (U+97F3), the glyph is visible in unity8, but use AR PL UKai CN.
  Pleace replace '_' to space.

ukai.ttc: AR PL UKai CN Book

= Both of ukai and droid sans have U+97F3,
all results of default lang (ie. LANG=ja), lang=ja, lang=en is valid.

For 楽 (U+697D), the glyph is invisible in unity8.
  Pleace replace '_' to space.
  $ fc-match 'sans:charset=!!%g9___/?6HG'

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1350921] [NEW] Developer mode translations are cut off

2014-07-31 Thread David Planella
Public bug reported:

Some translatable strings in the Developer Mode page are cut off and
only part of the string is exposed in Launchpad for translation.

I believe this is due to how the strings in the code are broken up to
fit into a given horizontal column count. E.g. [1]:

text: i18n.tr(In Developer Mode, anyone can access, +
change or delete anything on this +

It seems to come from:

Bug description:
When an indicator has no content, there is an Empty! message shown

  It seems to come from:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~unity-team/unity8/trunk/view/head:/qml/Panel/Indicators/DefaultIndicatorPage.qml#L200

So to make it translatable it should simply be enclosed in i18n.tr()
  and the .pot template updated.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1349959] [NEW] Display brightness message appears untranslated

2014-07-29 Thread David Planella
Public bug reported:

If I go to the Battery section, the Display brightness string appears
always in English, regardless of the language used.

It seems it might not be marked for translation or skipped for inclusion
in the .pot file, as I can't see it as a translatable string in

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1342644] Re: Install %1 updates needs plural forms

Also, in is there a reason why there are two versions of the string, one
with ellipsis and the other one without? If both strings were equal in

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1319257] Re: Additional drivers tab crashes if locale is sv and recommended driver available

2014-05-28 Thread David Planella
A few notes to answer some of the questions:

- The original string is correctly marked for translation. The reason all
arguments are marked for translation is so that languages that need to do so
rearrange these arguments in a way that is readable for users.
- Mistranslation of one of the arguments is something gettext should have
caught. I know gettext supports error checking using {} formatting strings
(albeit since relatively recently), so I'm a bit puzzled as to why it didn't
issue a warning in Launchpad. Perhaps LP is running on an Ubuntu version that
does not yet include the latest gettext?

As for the fix:
- For Ubuntu 14.10 we're setting up translations and language packs, so it
should be fixed automatically shortly
- For Ubuntu 14.04 we're now setting up a schedule [1] for language pack
updates and should be fixed there shortly
- For Ubuntu 13.10, we'll need to release an on-demand language pack update.

Cannot enable IM inside Qt5 apps including webapp-container

Status in Ubuntu Translations:
  New
Status in “im-config” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in “im-config” source package in Trusty:

Status in “im-config” package in Debian:
  Fix Released

Bug description:

  SRU debdiff for trusty:
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/173673094/im-config_trusty-sru_v2.debdiff

  [Impact]

   * Cannot input languages which need IM(ibus, fcitx) in Qt5 apps, e.g.
  webapp-container, webbrowser-app, friends-app, etc.

  [Test Case]
   1. prepare ibus or fcitx environment with CJK(Chinese, Japanese, Korean)
language, for example.
   2. install and launch webbrowser-app
   3. confirm that you cannot enable IM inside webbrowser-app
   4. update im-config packages to -proposed one
   5. logout from desktop session and re-login
   6. confirm that now you can enable IM and input CJK language with ibus or
fcitx.

  [Regression Potential]

   * This patch sets QT_IM_MODULE which might affect Qt4 app behaviour,
both Qt5 and Qt4 app tests are preferred to make sure there is no
regression for both sides. I used webbrowser-app(Qt5) and skype(Qt4)
  before attaching the patch.

  [Other Info]
related discussion is debian bug report.
  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=732396

  -- original description --

  WORKAROUND:
launch webapp-container with QT_IM_MODULE variable like the line below.

  $ env QT_IM_MODULE=ibus webapp-container --app-id=Gmailmailgooglecom
  --webapp=XX --enable-back-forward --store-session-cookies

webapp-container looks like QT5 application, im-config needs to care
about QT_IM_MODULE in addition to other *_IM_MODULE variables?

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1232412] Re: Needs translation setup

2014-01-16 Thread David Planella
Indicator-location is the last template that needs to be enabled for
translations. We had a chat between seb128, charles and I yesterday, and
to enable translators to do their work while waiting for the fix, I
generated a .pot file locally and manually uploaded it to the upstream
project. What is left to do is:

1) File a MIR for indicator-location to get the translations of the source
package imported (universe package translations are not imported):
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MainInclusionProcess - Charles might be in the best
position to do this as the developer
2) Generate and commit a .pot file in the upstream project source tree to
enable translations there too (translations will be shared with the upstream
project) - same as above, Charles, it'd be great if you could look into this as
part of this bug
3) Enable automatic translations export to have translations auto-committed to
the upstream project - I can do that.

Bug description:
Currently the indicator on the phone has got translatable messages
that are not translatable since we don't expose them to translators.

What's needed is to add a rule to extract translatable messages from
the source code with xgettext and put them into a .pot file under the
  po/ folder.

As an example, all system apps are also using CMake and
internationalized with the same rules, so I assume they can just be
reused for the indicator. Here's how the Web Browser does it:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~phablet-team/webbrowser-app/trunk/view/head:/po/CMakeLists.txt

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~phablet-team/webbrowser-app/trunk/view/head:/CMakeLists.txt#L52

Once that's done, I can help setting up the project in Launchpad for
  translations.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1268939] [NEW] Needs translation support

2014-01-14 Thread David Planella
Public bug reported:

The click scope needs to be set up for translations.

In summary, to make translations happen, we need to:

- Have a top-level po folder to contain translations
- Have the build system generate a .pot template that is committed to the
source tree
- Have the .deb package create that .pot template on build
- Have a build system rule to build translations (.po - .mo conversion) via
gettext tools
- Have Launchpad set up for translations (I can take care of this one)

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1268939] Re: Needs translation support

2014-01-14 Thread David Planella
I agree that having the .pot file in the source tree is not ideal, but
it's the easiest way to get translations automatically imported in
Launchpad. The other option is to manually upload the .pot template
every time it is updated.

Launchpad used to have support for automatically generating .pot files
for intltool-based projects, which we'd ideally use. It might well be
that it's still working, but I'm not sure about its maintenance status.

Relying solely on translators doesn't scale. Would it be possible to add a
mechanism to enable translation suggestion crowdsourcing ?

The basic idea would be a button to Translate this software
description below each untranslated description that would enable
users to easily provide a translation suggestion to the DDTP using
  Launchpad.

We could point the user to the DDTP translations in each individual
software summary shown in Ubuntu App Center or Synaptic. There would
be a button called Translate those descriptions
