[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1610160] Re: Typo in german translation of "Where am I"

2016-11-03 Thread Kyle Nitzsche
ota13 had nearby scope 4.9.1:
$ bzr ls -r tag:ota13 | grep  nearby
com.canonical.unity-scope-nearby_4.9.1_armhf.click

On extracting that click, it appears to contain the corrected German
translation:
$ msgunfmt de/LC_MESSAGES/aggregator.mo | grep Wo
msgstr "Wo bin ich"

Bug should be fix-released.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1491718] Re: Incorrect Finnish "Welcome" and translation

2016-11-03 Thread Kyle Nitzsche
Update:

The Nearby scope no longer provides that first use quick start help
welcome message. (not sure if that was intentional). So the translation
issue is no longer valid.

Also, the model previously used where agg scopes get their quick start
help from a separate hints scope is no longer in use. As of scope-
aggregator [1] release 4.8 (rev 164), an aggregator scope may provide
its own quick start help and no-network/no-location messages. Nearby
scope 4.8.0 [2] started using this "local hints" support.

The current Welcome translation says "Tervetuloa NearBy-laajuuteen",
which is incorrectly using a non-comprehensible and wrong translation
for scopes. It should be "Tervetuloa NearBy-näkymään" to be consistent
with the rest of the system.

I'd also vote for translating the untranslated scope name so that
"NearBy"="Lähellä". This would make the welcome text "Tervetuloa
Lähellä-näkymään" and have the "Lähellä" text as the title instead of
NearBy. This translation has been agreed with the top two Finnish
  translators of Ubuntu Phone.

Neither of these seem to be translatable at
  https://translations.launchpad.net/nearby-scope for some reason.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1634103] Re: "Holidays" is no translatable string anymore

2016-10-17 Thread Kyle Nitzsche
Hi Ubuntu Translators!

Today scope has added "Holidays" string for translations.

"Holidays" is the title of the child scope inside the Today scope that
shows upcoming holidays (national, religious, bank, etc).

(The title used to be "Next Holiday", I think, but it has changed.)

Many thanks as always.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1586375] Re: Typos in Portuguese Language

2016-06-01 Thread Kyle Nitzsche
Hi all:

Regarding Hints scope not yet being public. We are making the previously
unpublic scopes public.

Hints is a special case for the following reason: really, the underlying
architecture of having a separate hints scope is not correct. An
aggregator scope (made from lp:scope-agggregator, like News, Nearby,
Photos, Today, and others) should be able to provide its own hint
content. Why? Because such content should always be available (yet is it
not available if the hints scope is not installed) AND the content
should be correct for the particular version of the agg scope (whereas
hints scope cannot provide different content based on agg scope
version).

So, the future of the hints scope itself is not 100% certain.

That being said, if we make hints public and translators work on it, and
then later the hints scope is killed off, I suppose the translation work
would be manually ported to each agg scope so the work would not be
lost.

OK I've convinced myself: we should make hints public. :)

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1554957] Re: Photos scope aren't changed in Chinese.

2016-03-09 Thread Kyle Nitzsche
Hi Caroline,

You can see the photos scope translation status by language here:
https://translations.launchpad.net/photos-scope

And yes, there are no Chinese translations yet.

Note that the child scope's (facebook, etc.) provide their own
translations. Of these, only facebook is currently translated publicly.

I will create a task for Ubuntu translators for this.

Note that the other scopes open for translation from this team are
listed here: https://launchpad.net/canonical-scopes

Bug description:

The word "holidays" can have two meanings in English:
  1. "official day without work" (German translation: "Feiertag" resp.
"Feiertage" when referring to a single or few days; "Ferien" when referring to
a longer period.)
  2. "vacation" (German translation: "Urlaub", i.e. a holiday trip.)

Hi Rüdiger.

I just checked [1] and the Holidays scope name is translated into
German. The scope only needs to be released. I have just made a 1.2
version of the scope click pkg and we can release it.

Thanks for identifying this!

Cheers,
Kyle

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1491718] Re: Incorrect Finnish "Welcome" and translation

2015-11-09 Thread Kyle Nitzsche
Hi,

This phrase is provided by the so-called "hints" scope. The hints scope
provides quick start info for some aggregator scopes.

I have added your translation.

This will be available in the next release of hints scope.

Thank you for pointing this out!.

Regarding the second point: "NearBy" is considered a word that
identifies the scope in a brand-like way (like "Firefox", or "Facebook")
and so is not translated.

Neither of these seem to be translatable at

Bug description:
In Holidays scope there is sentence: "Sorry!" which is very hard to
  translate, located in ../src/query.cpp:209

Why it is hard to translate:
  1. Ubuntu Phone is screaming to the user (by "!" sign).
  2. It is still unknown who is "sorry". Is it "I'm sorry!" (as a Ubuntu/
phone) or "We are sorry!" (as a team). For Polish language it will be two
completely different translations ("Przepraszam!" - "I'm sorry!", or
"Przepraszamy!" - "We are sorry!")
  3. It is very uncommon and inconsistent, that ubuntu Phone is talking with
user. I cannot find other strings, where Phone is "sorry" for something.
  4. Polish translation: "I'm sorry!" - "Przepraszam!", is very bad, because it
mean that Ubuntu Phone has feelings and it is sorry for something.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1513311] Re: Very hard to translate "Sorry!" sentence

2015-11-05 Thread Kyle Nitzsche
Hi,

The exclamation point is not screaming, it is only emphasis. :)

If this message displays it indicates something is not right. This
"Sorry!" message is the title. The text below that tells the user, for
example, that holiday info cannot display because they need to enable
location awareness ins cope settings. So this is a polite and informal
way to begin informing the user there is something wrong with their
settings that they can fix.

I understand your concern that the term "Sorry" indicates the phone has
feelings. I think you are being too literal. The focus here is on
being polite and ifnormal.

If there is no direct translation in Polish for "Sorry", then use "We're
sorry" or some carefully considered equivalent. I don't want it to be a
direct and cold statement like "Error".

(By the way, normally someone other than the bug creator sets the status
to Confirmed :)

I welcome comments from Ubuntu UX here as well.

Mathew you were correct. turns out the 13% were almost all fuzzies,
which I thought I had removed but which, on closer inspection, are still
there.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 882664] Re: no Chinese/Simplified translation in oneiric

2011-10-29 Thread Kyle Nitzsche
Matthew, on your approach, I too downloaded your [1]. I applied the
current ubuntu-help pot to it, creating targeted.po:

msgmerge user-guide_zh_CN_gnome-user-docs-user-guide-zh_CN.po ubuntu-
help.pot -o targeted.po

Then, counted translations without fuzzies:
$ msgattrib --translated --no-fuzzy targeted.po | grep ^msgid | wc -l
53

Sigh.
