Dear translators, With the Jaunty beta release out and the string freeze in place, the time is right to work on translations for Ubuntu 9.04. The langpack import problems of last cycle have not been a concern this time. https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+translations shows Spanish is the only language this time with > 90% translation, but five others - French, Swedish, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, and British English - are > 80% translated. If you see something that needs his attention, it may help to contact him and inform him of what should be done with that template: correct translation domain, included in language pack or not, any complications such as a template having moved from one template to another. Hi Steve, Thanks for the reminder. For now there's a huge amount of .po files in import queue, especially for KDE and GNOME. So the actual amount of translated strings will be slightly different. Like many other teams we (French translators) only work on Ubuntu specific apps and documentation. I think that before telling people to start translating for intrepid, the issues that rosseta has at the moment should first be resolved. Unless we expect people to do duplicate work or we expect people to work only in rosseta and not upstream. Right now the GNOME po from 2.24 tarballs don't seem to be imported into rosseta. For example gnome-terminal 2.24.0 has been uploaded in the repos [1], from the GNOME tarball I can see that the el.po (Greek) is translated 100% [2], but rosseta as of today [3] shows that there are 51 untranslated messages :( Are we expected to manually upload the upstream templates? Acording to [4], at the core of the Ubuntu Philosophy are these core philosophical ideals: 1 ... 2 Every computer user should be able to use their software in the language of their choice. 3 ... But it seems lately that we are not doing much to help make that idea possible. So lets make translations for ubuntu work again by improving workflows and involving community members, launchpad/canonical stuff doesn't seem to be able to this stuff alone. Call for intrepid translations
Dear friends, Now that the Intrepid beta release is out, this is a good time for some translation focus on Ubuntu 8.10. https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+translations shows Spanish, British English, and French in the lead - no surprise there! - but even these leaders are showing less complete translations in the past; Spanish is only 90% translated, British English is 81% translated, and French is at 80%. Only two other languages - Brazilian Portugese and Swedish - are more than 75% translated for Intrepid, and only 25 languages have translations of 50% or more. It would be great if we could see these percentages brought WAY up for the final release! The deadline for non-language pack translations (such as for the installer, Firefox, and debconf templates) is coming up on October 16, with the deadline for language pack translations a week later on October 23. GNOME does a lot of 2.23.x alpha/beta releases, which we promptly upload to intrepid as well. Thus their translations immediately land in Rosetta's import queue. The reason why the intrepid langpacks are currently so exceptionally incomplete and bad is the huge backlog of imports/unapproved domains. This problem is currently being discussed already. If so, there was no copying but you can export the Hardy translations and upload them to the Intrepid release series.
