If it helps, I can point you to the code which classifies the

 Cheers

I'd like to see classification according to distributed
media, e.g. Ubuntu-X.xx-Live-CD, Kubuntu-X.xx-Live-CD,
Ubuntu-X.xx-Server-netinstall, etc.

I think that small translation teams would appreciate such a
list, so they could focus on finishing a certain product.

Template priorities in Launchpad set up for Karmic

2010-01-21 Thread David Planella
Hi all,

I'd like to announce that the priorities of translation templates in
Launchpad have now been set for Karmic according to the classification
below:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/TemplatesPriority#Priority%20policy

This means that from now on templates which are considered more
important to focus on for translation will be shown further up in the
global list of Ubuntu templates.

You can see the end result in the new ordering of templates here:

  https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic

If you'd like to tweak any of the priorities (e.g. if you think a
certain package should be given more or less priority and appear further
up or down in the list), please let us know here and the Ubuntu
Translations Coordinators [1] team will be able to quickly modify them
if there is consensus.

The next list of priorites to be set will be for Lucid, and then we can
perhaps look at the previous releases.

Regards,
David.

Hi,

That's great work, however I was wondering whether it is possible to
see separately packages related to Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu etc.

Right now you can see lot of KDE packages in this list. (I do
understand that you can install KDE packages in Ubuntu and vice
versa).

My thinking is, it would be also good to see only packages which come
on installation CD for each version of Ubuntu, so translation teams
can see what is missing in initial installation of system.

Kind regards

Laco

Hi Laco,

Right now you can see lot of KDE packages in this list. (I do

The global templates list contains all translatable applications in the
main and restricted Ubuntu repositories. This basically includes Ubuntu,
Kubuntu and Ubuntu Netbook Edition.

What we've discussed in the past is to separate that view into package
sets (e.g. GNOME, KDE, Mozilla, etc.). While we all agree that this
would be a good idea, the resources in the Launchpad Translations
development team will be put into providing better integration with
upstream translations right now, so they will not have time to work on
this on this cycle. You can see the full Launchpad development Roadmap,
including Translations, here [1].

That said, Launchpad is Open Source, so we encourage anyone wanting to
implement any new features to work on them to scratch their own itch, so
to say. If you'd be interested, I'd recommend you to see the
documentation on starting hacking on Launchpad [2] or attend the
Launchpad Translations under the hood session [3] during the Ubuntu
Developer Week next week on the 26th of January. Also, people on the
#launchpad-dev IRC channel on Freenode are always willing to help.

My thinking is, it would be also good to see only packages which come
on installation CD for each version of Ubuntu, so translation teams
can see what is missing in initial installation of system.

This is already done, although in a different way. Templates from the
default installation (and which are shown in the UI) are at the top of
the list, so that translators know that they can focus on them first.

On https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/TemplatesPriority#Priority%
20policy you can see the criteria followed for ordering the templates.
You can also download the priorities list at the end of the section,
which shows the priority and the classification we've made for each
package.

 Kind regards

 Laco

Thanks!

David.

You can try this dirty hack: http://l10n.ubuntu.tla.ro/karmic-report/
This is a temporary replacement and we can use it as a prototype for
implementing this feature in Launchpad.

Data is updated from staging... more than 1 week old. Hope we can get a
1 day delay data soon.

Any help with UI mockups and ideas how to group templates is welcomed.
Fell free to comment on the mailinglist.

With the following upstream integration, maybe we will have the grouping
login in Launchpad, so we only need to provide a good UI.

Cheers!

Here is my list of templates I think could have their priority
decreased:

 * gimp* - I think gimp and all its plugins are used by technical person
who know english. I don't see my mother/grandmother using gimp.

 * compiz-plugins-* , while all the plugins are great, from the point of
view of translations, I think they have little impact on the usability.
The main compiz package could stay as it is enabled by default.

 * not sure about GGZ Gamin Zone template... but maybe people do play a
lot of online games supporting ggz.
  Put them together with ggz-gtk-client

 * tracker - as far as I know it is no longer installed by default

I will move them just above the bulk (around 600) KDE templates.

--
Here is my list of templates I think could have their priority increades
above the KDE bulk:

* ubuntu-docs - they are installed by default and now they are around
position 800.
Except ubuntu-doc-serverguide (not sure if it still maintained)
* cheese
* pidgin, pidgin-libnotify - even if epiphany is the new client, I know
many person still using pidgin
* nautilus-cd-burner - a simple alternative to brasero
* not sure about pessulus and sabayon - they are port of the main Gnome
* pppconfig and pppoeconf - when NetworkManager have problems, this
tools are often used.
* gtk+ gtk+-properties ... don't know why it is at position 1200
* ibus-pinyin ... should this template be near the other ibus stuff?
(Just asking)

This should be a good start :)

Comments, suggestions ?
