[UIFe] Checkbox GUI needs to be able to send test results to Launchpad
Hi, I am proposing to submit the following UIFe to the checkbox package in Ubuntu: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/checkbox/+bug/1302615 It modifies Checkbox's submission dialog screen to allow the user to send their test results to Launchpad. Previously users were only able to save the report file. We need to make this change as the submit to Launchpad feature was something that was in previous releases of Ubuntu (when Checkbox had a different UI), so users would expect it to be in the new UI as well. The changes themselves are minor - a text field is added for the user to enter their Launchpad email address, and the text of the 'Save Result' button is changed to 'Submit Result'. The dialog message is also changed to inform the user what will happen when they click 'Submit Results'. If there any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. -- ubuntu-translators mailing list ubuntu-translators@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-translators

We discussed a new testing library/engine that will eventually drive a replacement for checkbox. The engine is under development but is not yet ready for prime time. Thus, it will not happen in Ubuntu 13.10, so at least for that version checkbox will still be there. Though the string changes are minimal, I'd still consider checkbox a target for quick review and translation of the few changes that are submitted as part of everyday bug fixing. I'm OK with lowering the priority to better target efforts but I'd like to make a case for not entirely dismissing checkbox. >> >> In short, there will be checkbox package but it will send data to nowhere. ;) Raw data is sent to launchpad (https://launchpad.net/~/+hwdb-submissions). Hi David, This was an oversight on my part, for which I apologize now. I was under the impression that the old "System Testing" string had been reused for this screen. On closer analysis based on your comments, I see that indeed a new string has been added, this was needed because, as you can see, the frame where the string resides is on the right side of the banner and the words appear in separate lines. So I need to amend my request to both -translators and -doc to state "One new string has been added". I rebuilt the .pot file on my tree and this is the new string: #: ../qt/frontend/ui_qtfront.h:635 msgid "" "System \n" "Testing" msgstr "" Also based on testing with slighly longer translatons from other languages, I reduced the font size so those strings fit. Thanks and apologies for the last-minute changes! > Would it not be possible to e.g. reuse the Software Center code already has > for its banners? UIFe: Checkbox header image is wrong
Hello! I'm writing again to request a UI Freeze Exception for checkbox. Currently checkbox in Ubuntu has a wrong header image as can be seen here: http://people.canonical.com/~roadmr/header-bad.png We'd like to replace it with this, which is present in the development version but got left behind during a merge due to an oversight (apologies): http://people.canonical.com/~roadmr/header-good.png This new header image works better with the default Ubuntu theme and also takes care of usability concerns, where testers were unsure if the "icons" on the old header image are clickable. No translatable strings are involved or changed; the "system testing" string on the right is already in the .pot file and didn't change. Also there's no change to checkbox's functionality. The corresponding bug report is this one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/checkbox/+bug/1044035 Thanks! - Daniel -- ubuntu-translators mailing list ubuntu-translators@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-translators

I now see the untranslated "System Testing" string in the header again, even though it is translated in Launchpad. So I assume that this has regressed and we're back to non-translatable static text (or perhaps it is a consequence of the of this bug). Would it not be possible to e.g. reuse the Software Center code already has for its banners? Visually it'd be identical and the default banner's text ("Our star apps") on the SC is fully translatable already. Right now, the "System Testing" text says nothing to non-English speakers, and it feels a bit out of place in a desktop that is otherwise fully translated. Thanks. Cheers, David. [FFe] [UIFe] request for Checkbox, rearranging controls in the test screen
Hello! I'm writing today to request a UI Freeze exception for checkbox: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/checkbox/+bug/1044037 The test screen, which is one of the most important in checkbox, was confusing to users we spoke to. A few changes are needed in how the controls are arranged, the changes are described in the bug report, but in short, a few pushbuttons would need to be converted to radio buttons, a currently-togglable text field should always be present, and keyboard shortcuts should be added to all controls. The benefit of these changes is to make the UI clearer and less quirky; to encourage users to comment on test results by making the comments field visible at all times; and to make testing faster by returning the keyboard controls (these were present in the old GTK interface but hadn't been reimplemented in the Qt UI). This is the old test screen: http://people.canonical.com/~roadmr/test-screen-bad.png This is how the new screen looks like: http://people.canonical.com/~roadmr/checkbox4.png For translators: a few strings would change, those for the Yes, No, Skip this Test, Previous and Next controls, mainly due to the addition of the marker (& in the case of Qt) for the keyboard shortcuts. It seems that most if not all of the Checkbox UI is not translatable, or at least its translations are not exposed in Launchpad. I can think of several causes: - The checkbox.pot template is not up to date (this would explain translations not being in Launchpad) - The Checkbox UI strings not being marked for translation (this would explain translations not being in Launchpad) - The translation domain is not properly set in the code (this would explain translations not being loaded) I think the first thing to determine is why are the UI strings not in Launchpad. I'm marking this bug as Critical from the translations side, as Checkbox is an Ubuntu upstream app installed by default, and it needs to keep up to the promise of an OS available in every user's language. This upload will contain yet another string exception :( Really sorry, but we want Ubuntu Friendly to work as good as possible when launching. https://bugs.launchpad.net/checkbox/+bug/861844 We have received feedback from the community that one of the core questions that we ask the user, and used to calculate the rating of a system, is confusing. We have added a string that tries to clarify it. String Freeze Exception for Checkbox
Hello, This email is to ask for a string freeze exception in the next upload of Checkbox (0.12.8). On that upload, there are two bugs that will break the string freeze: 1) https://bugs.launchpad.net/checkbox/+bug/852036 Checkbox is going to be used mainly for the Ubuntu Friendly programme. As we don't have menus anymore, the software needs to be easy to discover 2) https://bugs.launchpad.net/checkbox/+bug/855328 This warning message is very important. People are going to use checkbox in Oneiric thanks to the Ubuntu Friendly programme. People could lose data, if they don't save their stuff before starting testing Thanks for your consideration! I think it is not, as I believe strings in the checkbox text files are loaded from the .mo files (at least the files in /usr/share/checkbox/jobs/ contain no translations). Marc, do those translations get loaded from the .mo files (i.e. checkbox can use language packs), or do they need to be merged from the .po files into the resulting .txt files at build time? String changes in Checkbox sound tests for Maverick
Hi folks, I will be proposing a string change in Checkbox for sound related tests: - Do you hear a sound? + Do you hear a sound and was that sound free of any distortion, clicks or other strange noises? And: - Do you hear a sound through the headphones? + Do you hear a sound through the headphones and did the sound play without any distortion, clicks or other strange noises from your headphones? Note that there is a pending bug about translations not being loaded in Checkbox, bug #514401, I will try to address that one in time for Maverick. He told us that they are needed to indicate the following newline should be ignored in the code. He added they're not meant to be like \n, they're meant to enable the template files to be more readable by having long lines wrapped. The lines are merged by the parser when \ is followed by a newline, so it will be the same if you just don't use \ nor newline. So, we have to translate strings as a single line without "\". He ended saying that the issue with the program will definitely be addressed early in the lucid cycle. New template of checkbox get imported
Hi everyone, There is a new templates of "System Testing" (checkbox) that have been imported to LP, due to the fix of the bug # 456115. There are several new strings to translate so it should be nice to have them done ASAP because the deadline is tomorrow. https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/checkbox/+pots/checkbox Happy translations!
