[ubuntu-uk] Where to put shared files

2006-09-16 Thread Steve Smith
I've finally got my server working, LTSP here we come!

I want a directory for files shared between users on the same machine
(music, photos etc.). Is there a convention for where that should be?

Should I be using NFS (bear in mind it's all on one machine), or is it
easiest just to make a directory and assign users to a group?

There really needs to be no appearance of anyone taking over a LUG or
any of it's events. The Ubuntu UK teams involvement with LUGs and their
events should be rightly seen as a plus point having users and
developers like ourselves who are so deeply involved in Ubuntu chipping
in to help and hopefully enhancing their event(s).

When events can be organised and I am able to attend. If it requires a
little travel, I will be able to have my better half take me and we will
be able to offer lifts to those in our area. Our second car is a Volvo
estate, so transporting a few PC's is not a problem. ;-)

Yes. It is not the teachers's fault. We had a college IT teacher in the
hacklab once, he explained that even if he wants to teach some free
software he can't, they are locked in a contract with microsoft by which
they can not install any other software on the machines.

He still offered live CDs and even used one of them to show them.

I have no idea why that's happening, and google is not helpful with this

I used the key fine the other day to sign the ubuntu code of conduct. If

Manchester seems popular so far. Personally I'm easy about location as long
as I can get there by train or bus.
For those who cant get to Manchester, any suggestions about where might be
good for you, thats still pretty accessible?

Joining with Manchester LUG

I'm a split on this issue. I've listed some pros and cons that I can think
of below.

Pros - People who are already involved. They are running an installfest on
the October 21st of various distros, including Ubuntu (dapper and a couple
of edgy cd's).
- Established meeting place!

Con - Would we appear as trying to take over?
Are we trying to form our own identity as an Ubuntu group, or would
we be better off as part of the Manchester LUG?

Jono did write (11/09)

> * Try to work with local LUGs to encourage combined meetings.

Might be an idea to split the meetings? Alter between an Ubuntu group
meeting and a Man LUG? That way we get a chance to develop our own identity
without taking over a pre-existing group (hopefully we will grow from more
than a handful).

Of course there are - I am another one. I found out about this
unfortunately high traffic list via Jono Bacon's blog post which
appeared on Ubuntu planet. I don't have very good internet access (long
story) so can't use irc and keep my email subscriptions to a minimum.

I get all my linux support online - of course I choose whether to declare
myself
as female - if I don't tell you you'd (hopefully) never know..

I've never had face to face linux support to know whether I'd feel more
comfortable with a guy or a girl - I generally go on expertise etc. I
doesn't bother me but I can imagine helping a woman could intimidate
some young boys.

Of course there are. I'm in the LoCoTeam - I'm just not on the irc
channel or this high traffic list (until now). I've got pretty poor
internet access (IT student who's had her broadband cut off..) so my
online participation is limited.

If I need support I get it from the best place - online. The net is
wonderfully gender-neutral! Unless I tell you I'm female you'd never
know - my main net identity is deliberately gender neutral for this
reason.. Face-to-face support *maybe* - but I've not come across it
yet..

I found out about the stall via Jono Bacon's blog - I left a message
there saying I'll muck in if needed.
