For the package security or bugs updates - are these only called
 'updates'?

In my head, I would call a 'manual install' a re-install as you are
wiping the system and starting again. The thing that tells you about new
versions of packages I call updates (or security updates, as they tend
to be dominated by security fixes), and hitting the button 'upgrade' in
update manager I call an upgrade.

The advantage of the upgrade method is that it preserves all your system
configuration and also keeps all the extra packages that have been
installed.

[ubuntu-uk] Graphical configuration for ndiswrapper in Feisty

2007-04-21 Thread Michael
Hi,

I've been trying to wean a newbie off Pardus with its risible attitude
to security (as he explains, the reason I want to use Linux isn't the
security, it's the stability), but with his minimal command line skills
Kubuntu needs to have graphical tools for installing wireless card
drivers via ndiswapper. Does Feisty provide that kind of tool?

Regards,

Michael

Yes it does mate:

The Ndisgtk package does this (Windows Wireless Drivers in add/remove programs).

Install it and it creates a Windows Wireless Drivers entry in system
administration. You can now point it to the .inf file from a Windows
driver disk You never know it just might work ;-)

It's not, but if you're a glutton for punishment, you could get it
 from here for him:

 http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/net/ndisgtk

transfer it across to his computer on CD/USB or whatever, but you
might also have to check the dependencies for it are installed on his
machine, and the dependencies for the dependencies, and perhaps
 transfer those across too :-S

Apparently not. He's from Holland, where they do things differently.

Going back to the security aspect
(http://bugs.pardus.org.tr/show_bug.cgi?id=5313), it's terrifying to see
how ex-Windows user are willing to sacrifice Linux security culture

It is, or would be if VIA's graphics was supported. Hardware supports
is still an issue with Linux. Given how popular VIA kit is for the
budget end of the market I'm surprised it's still not there. Running
this laptop sometimes reminds me of the bad old days of Linux five+
years ago. You can live with VESTA but you wouldn't choose it...
bugger I did! Damn, that will be my fault for not reading the HCL

Download the image (about 600-700MB) and burn it as described here:

I recommend using bittorent to download it if you know how. Otherwise,

[ubuntu-uk] 7.04 upgrade tool crash - how to assess next action?

2007-04-21 Thread alan c
I upgraded kubuntu 6.10 to 7.04 via the automatic upgrader, and things
seemed to go ok for pretty well the full 2 1/2 hours (approximately),
but near the end when it looked as if files were being re written, the
crash notification appeared. Internet connection did not seem to be
effective at that time (or I might have tried to file a report), so I
rebooted.

It appears to be a functioning installation but- I am not now sure
about what I should do.

I am tempted to wipe and reinstall a clean 7.04. I would usually use a
clean install for an upgrade anyway, but this time I thought the
upgrade tool was worth a try since it popped up and invited itself!

How do I assess if I am now running a good 7.04?

fixable? Note I had similar problems under Edgy.

It sort of works on mt Inspiron 2200, sometimes it suspends, sometimes
it don't, it just adds to the fun lol

Indeed! I lived with the issue on Edgy, so I can live with it a bit
longer until I can persuade my boss to buy me a new laptop! I'm not
 holding my breath though!

 Regards,
 Tony.

If you are using GNOME goto the SystemPreferencesPower Management. On
the first tab On AC Power change the drop down menu for when laptop
lid is closed to your own preference.

Yes, I had set this option to 'suspend'. When I closed the lid while
logged in, the machine appeared to suspend and turn itself off but when
I powered back up it brought up the log in screen instead of the
'unlock' screen which is what I had expected.

Regards,
Tony.

[ubuntu-uk] Spread Ubuntu: More stuff added

2007-04-21 Thread Robin Stent

Just wanted to let you know that I've added a load of marketing material to
my Spread Ubuntu site. As well as some of the more obviously available stuff
I've collated items from various forum posts etc that should be a useful
resource for people who want to help spread Ubuntu.

Have a look, let me know if you have any suggestions for other things to
add:
http://www.spreadubuntu.co.uk/resources

Cheers

 Thanks! will do it

It worked well, thanks again.
It looks as if the pre-crash actions were virtually complete, because
very little actually downloaded (if anything) during this 'recovery'
action.

Just curious, do you know what crashed?

[ubuntu-uk] Feisty 7.04 restart problem (shutdown)

2007-04-21 Thread alan c
I have 7.04 on a laptop and the restart works ok. However on a desktop
(which works with any other distro I have tried) the restart does not
complete - it seems to hang before shutdown (no screen display at that
stage) and I have to force power off. This actually causes file
systems to be 'not clean' to show at restart.

Shutdown works ok on both machines. I have not tried options other
than restart, I only ever use shutdown or restart, but finding
'restart' to be a problem like this is a bit of a surprise.

Is there anything I can do to ensure a proper shutdown within the
restart function?

I had the same issue, seems like the upgrade is smart and discounts any

probably use 500ish for packages. My solution was to download the alt cd

It is now saying it needs 201MB in /usr ... yet...

So completely bemused by it... what on earth is it going on about!?!?
