Can we please get these all in one place? It's going to be incredibly
hard to track - even these demos - if they on on peoples personal web
space all over the web.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/Leaflets for example - click more actions
--> Attachments and add yours.

I would also strongly urge you not to link to ubuntuguide.org, but
instead only link to official sites such as those within the *ubuntu.com
domain like wiki.ubuntu.com and help.ubuntu.com.

Other than that I like the style of the leaflet - not overloaded with
information.

Cheers,
Al.

I'd agree with that, although I have used Scribus in the past, generally
OOo Draw does most of I want.

I've downloaded a trial of Publisher 2007 (on my other half's laptop) so
I'll have a play and see if copying and pasting from Publisher to OOo
works or not.

This sounds a bit like an issue I have seen before but with DOS based
network drivers for the Netware 3 client. Basically when a machine was
turned on it would take a few seconds to initialize the network card
link to the switch. Pausing for a few seconds before loading the
network drivers solved the issue.

I wonder if something has changed in the network driver?

I'm trying to dump the WMV stream with Mplayer. Then in theory I should
be able to re-encode it into AVI format with Mencoder.

The command line I'm using to dump the stream is:

mplayer
http://wm-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms2/news/n5ctrl/tvseq/od/bbc1/bb/wm/video/click_bb.wmv
-dumpstream -dumpfile "dump.wmv"

Then I'm hoping that this will work to encode it into AVI:

mencoder dump.wmv -ovc lavc -oac mp3lame -o encodedvideo.avi

I haven't however got the whole stream dumped yet though so it may not work.

Anyway, for future reference there is a link on the Ubuntu forums with
regards to converting video files here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2810792

Ta,

Rob

maybe it means that it can detect a network device, but the network
isn't ready. Like when you turn the modem on, it has to load something
up presumably from the server it connects to, before it is ready for the

Another good way of troubleshooting problems with boot times is to
install the 'bootchart' package using Synaptic (System -> Administration
-> Synaptic Package Manager).

When the system boots, bootchart will save a timeline of the boot
process in /var/log/bootchart, showing which programs are taking the
most time at boot.

Thanks,

Hi Keith

It was me, I am taking the cowards way out, switching on the computer
then making the tea!

I had this problem with a previous version, a previous upgrade cured it,
but the last upgrade broke the previous one also (very strange).

It also rewrote my GRUB (which it must) could this give us a hint?

I must say I am just waiting for another upgrade to fix it.

All the best

Hi,

You can find out what's causing this issue by altering the boot
parameters next time you start the machine.
At the grub prompt, press e (for edit), then select the kernel line and
press e again. Now delete the word 'quiet' (and 'splash' for more
detail). This change is only temporary. Finally press enter and then 'b'
to boot.

You should see the process being run when it's pausing. Some common
processes are mounting file systems and starting network interfaces.

[ubuntu-uk] Booting Up

2007-06-15 Thread Keith Bowerman
I'm not sure if I saw some reference to lengthy booting up times on this
group recently, or did I imagine it?

So far as I'm concerned, since a kernel upgrade about three weeks ago I
am suffering from this symptom.

>From switch on to the drumbeat of the login screen has been taking 4
minutes 18 seconds, including the 10 second countdown for the Grub menu,
although the latest time a few minutes ago was 4'29". During this time
the orange progress bar stops at the third 'square' from the left and
sits there for 3'4".

Does anyone have any comments to offer?

Cheers,

Keith.

Well you can keep your options open with this set of software.
Do it in Writer/Draw and if you need more DTP import into Scribus.
Scribus imports from Draw and Writer very nicely. You can even do most
of your text formattting in writer and import to Scribus.
I think these programs work well together and are a LOT cheaper than
MSOffice with MS Publisher. :-)
The money you save on upgrades alone would buy you a PC in a few years :-)

I'm not sure if this will help but could they run Publisher and OOo or
Scribus on Windows and select everything on the page, copy it and paste
it into OOo?

Other than that, they could try using something like PDF Creator on
Windows which as far as I know will export into EPS/PS format. Even if
it doesn't, you should be able to use something like pdf2ps to convert
the document into PS format which can then be imported (hopefully) into
Scribus and then copied and pasted into OOo.

I think PDF creator also has the option to create PNG/JPG/BMP/TIF etc
files, so if all else fails they could get the whole page as an image
which can easily be imported into OOo.

I went down the PDF2PS route the other day. I was after a high quality
logo for the company I work for. Luckily I found a PDF copy of a
business card which I was able to convert to PDF, import into Scribus
and then copy and paste into Inkscape to make an SVG version. Looked
great when it was finally imported into OOo, much better than the JPG
copies that were available to me.

Hope this helps anyway.
