Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu 9.04 Performance Issue
Hi Folks Following on from my earlier query about poor OOO 3.0 performance under Ubuntu 9.04 Wubi, I decided to conduct an experiment. One of the great joys of Wubi is that it can be uninstalled in a few minutes without having a fundamental impact on the rest of your computer. I uninstalled 9.04, reinstalled 8.10, removed OOO 2.4 and installed OOO 3.0 (Debian package). The result is that OOO 3.0 on Ubuntu 8.10 Wubi runs great. No performance issues. I can only conclude, therefore, that the fundamental problem lies with Ubuntu 9.04. I will, however, be reverting back to 9.04 to test out the suggestions kindly made by forum contributors before deciding on a final configuration. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Bloomin' ATI and Linux....
Hey guys, I share your frustration with the ATI cards and Linux. I converted my friends machine over recently to running Ubuntu Jaunty believing that the ATI drivers had improved and would be nearly on par with the nVidia ones. And I learned the hard way that that was not the case... we tried to get World of Warcraft running in Wine and all we managed to get was graphical distortion. Best option really is if you are going to buying a machine avoid ATI like the plague and go for an nVidia card. It may be worth you guys with desktop machines buying a cheap nVidia card to save you pulling all your hair out with the ATI drivers. Unfortunately this is not an option for most laptop owners (there are some laptops you can change the card in http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/Table.html check to see if yours is on the list). Anyway hope this helps, Alan Jenkins 2009/4/30 Chris Rowson > Hi, two quick questions. >> >> Do you get the same degregation with any other distros you've tried? Hi, two quick questions. Do you get the same degregation with any other distros you've tried? That is is it Ubuntu specific or distro wide? Secondly, have you tried Dell's own Ubuntu clone to see if that gives you the performance stability you're after? Dependant on your answers, it may then be worth while raising a bug Cheers Ian -Original Message- From: ubuntu-uk-boun...@lists.ubuntu.com [mailto:ubuntu-uk-boun...@lists.ubuntu.com]on Behalf Of Chris Rowson Sent: 30 April 2009 21:14 To: British Ubuntu Talk Subject: Re: [ubuntu-uk] Bloomin' ATI and Linux My Dell D600 Latitude laptop runs an "ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250 [Mobility FireGL 9000]" and I have always suffered with poor performance. Unfortunately I never get to the bottom of it. I really should try and get to a LUG meeting one day see if someone who knows what they are doing can improve it. But with 9.04 (well and others I have tried) I always get full compix effects, wobbly windows etc on the fresh install but it seems almost straight away to degrade and within the same day I seem to loose the ability to have any effects. Now (less than a week into a fresh clean install) I cannot enable any effects. Scrolling web pages can get very cumbersome. Just minimising windows can be a bit slow. I seem to be using the vesa driver. I tried the fglrx but it broke...so I will just leave it as it is for now. Jon Hi Jon, Just out of interest, have you tried adding the 'CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor' object to your panel? If not, add it and change the setting to 'performance'. One strange habit I've found that Ubuntu has is that it sets the power management setting on my laptop (perhaps all laptops?) to 'Powersave' by default restricting the CPU speed to 800Mhz. In the end to get around this I installed the nvidia-glx-96 driver. You should be able to find it in Synaptic. Hopefully this should enable you to get a better resolution. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu 9.04 Performance Issue
The problem i am having are two fold. the first is my graphic card, Nvidia G4 400, the res is crap it set at 600 x400 and every time i try and reboots a message is displayed stating that the graphics were incorrect and it will boot up in minimum settings. The second fold of my problem is to do with when the system has not been used for awhile and it starts the screen saver, but ends up with a cursor flash in the top left hand side of the screen. Not sure if anyone has come across these issues at all.
