I note that the package wacom-tools is not listed in Ubuntu 10.04 RC.
Without this package I presume that it will not be possible to use Wacom

Would I, therefore, be correct in assuming that if the Wacom tablet does
not perform as would be expected then that is a bug?

Basically it means that package wacom-tools has been replaced by
xserver-xorg-input-wacom which is installed by default so indeed if the
Wacom tablet doesn't work as expected, it is a bug.

2010-04-29 Thread simon bennie
Hi guys i've decided to spend a half hour today politely emailing news
outlets and tech websites/shows trying to conince them to give a full
reveiew of the new Ubuntu. i got the idea from the forums.

I think it would all be great if we could do this.

So far i have emailed:

the gadget show :gadget.s...@northonetv.com
engadget: look at the right hand side of the site for the red tip us link.

I'm also planning to spread the news on my facebook account.

If any of you have any other ideas who to email please let me know.

And happy lucid day to you all.

Yep, I think it's a good idea, The Register already did an article about
Ubuntu the other day...

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/04/27/ubuntu_10_04_mac_windows/

Only issue I can see is if news sites are doing something about it for
instance, this morning and people head over to the Ubuntu site they'll
see that 9.10 is still the default (unless they choose 10.04 RC). I
sometimes wonder if they're better off releasing it at 12am?

Personally I'm happy to wait, but I know it's been brought up on the
list before about the release not actually happening until later on in
the day.

Just seen the release announcement, that's awesome and all that, but
the website is still setup for 9.10, and people are going to be

Maybe it's because not all the mirrors have got 10.04 yet?

I've just checked the Virgin mirror and that's still on 10.04 RC, so
I've grabbed the torrent (although it's not as quick as the Virgin
mirror, getting about 300KB compared to 2MB/sec) but I'm not in a major
hurry. I am planning on reinstalling tonight on a new hard drive (my
current laptop drive is failing and I have a shiney new drive, I just
wanted to wait for the full release before swapping it out).

[ubuntu-uk] Acer Ferrari One - First Hurdle Failure

2010-04-29 Thread Kris Douglas
Hello guys, I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 into a 20 gig partition
on my Acer Ferrari One Netbook. It worked perfectly, the installer,
ran it from a USB so it was really quick, a great experience.

Sadly from there on it only got worse, once I had removed the drive
from the system, and rebooted, it would pass GRUB2, then load Ubuntu,
and on the last bit where you can see the mouse on the loading screen,
the Ubuntu login sound plays, and the mouse works, and then the end of
the Ubuntu theme repeats about 4 times, sounded like rap- but better.
Then the machine froze on that loading screen with the mouse on
display, immobile. I couldn't even turn caps lock on, which is usually
a dead certainty something has gone wrong.

I wish I could give you more information, but I honestly can't, that
is all that happens. No errors on load, it just crashes.

Machine spec:
AMD Athlon X2 L310 1.2GHz
2GB DDR2
250GB Toshiba drive
ATI 3200HD graphics - I think this is most likely the culprit. (my opinion)
Windows 7 in most of it, 20 gig for Ubuntu

Any help would be really appreciated, I can't wait to get stuck in :)

Thanks,

Can you hit the ALT+CTRL+F1 key to get a terminal? You can then access
/var/log to take a look in the logs. The Xorg logs may have something,
personally I dont understand those logs much myself, but someone on here or
the ubuntuforums will be able to help.

Also running sudo lshw will give useful output on hardware if you get to
the command line.

Try searching the ubuntu forums for this card if you think its the graphics.
Can you try booting and running from a Live CD? How does that work?
