[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu Server Upgrade -- how long should I wait for server to restart?

2011-02-22 Thread Alexander Birchall

Hi,

I have just gone through the procedure of upgrading from Ubuntu server Hardy
Heron 8.04 to the latest version (10.04 LTS), using the upgrade manager. The
procedure took a couple of hours to complete, and then I was asked to restart
the server. This I did, but that was half an hour ago. How long should I wait
for the server to return to life?

Many thanks.

Hello Alex,
How long you should wait probably depends on what the server is doing now.
You request does not state what state the server is currenty in, so it is
difficult to advise.

Has the server actually rebooted or is it still thinking about it?
Did you select reboot or shutdown ?
How far in the boot process did the server get after the reboot?
Did you see the the bios screen?
Is there anything showing on the monitor, such as a little white flashing
cursor?
Do you get a response if you ping the server?

If there is no disk activity and you cant ping the server and there is
nothing on the screen, then it sounds like a manual reboot is in order. If
so, then try Ctrl-Alt-Del keyboard combination as a more elegant way to shut
down the server (compared to the reset button).

The more information you can give us then the better chance we have of
giving you something other than general information.

Thank you

Indeed. Your description implies that you're not near the server and
don't have a networked KVM on it. I don't recommend remotely upgrading
without that.

The best possible outcome (which doesn't involve you going to the
colocation room) is that the server is running an fsck right now and
will come online once that's done. Otherwise, you need to get on a
keyboard and monitor and see what is happening.

[ubuntu-uk] Apt authentication issue

2011-02-22 Thread McGibbney, Lewis John
Hi list,

This is a problem which has been bothering me for some time I am using 10.04
and have been experiencing the above problem. Every time I navigate to a page
on my browser I am prompted to authenticate. Every time I try to run updates I
get the Apt issue as above. I am connected to the network as Auto eth0 but I am
not sure whether I am actually connected to the network as oppose to just the
net. Running 'sudo apt-get update' I get the following from terminal

That sounds like an issue with a proxy server, and may not be related to
the issue with apt. Do you have another machine available which works,
on which you can check the proxy server settings?

If you can get through to the internet, your hardware network connection

have local networking set up OK - assuming there are some of course.

I'm assuming sudo works ok for you on that machine.
I would try to select a new apt mirror. You didn't say if you were
running a desktop or a server, but I'll assume desktop as you mentioned
browsing from it. You could run SystemAdministrationUpdate Manager and
in the settings select a different server (the University of Kent mirror
service is big and fast from here) and see if that manages to update OK.

I have been searching for solution on and off for a good while now,

therefore I realise that I need to get help from the mail list.

Wow!

Hassan, if you are replying to several people in one message then using
@soandso is fine by me. :-)

I do not think we need to be so prescriptive as to require rules about
the syntax of how to reply.

It's the same as top or bottom posting. I prefer bottom posting, but
it's not the end of the world if peeps use top.

This just is a mailing list for any one (normal people geeks) to

My Thoughts:

I've never got the issue with peoples responses. The only one I kinda
get is the top posting where it becomes increasingly annoying to follow
on the bulk mails.

I find as long as someone has the answer for me then I'm happy that is
after all why most of us ask questions on the list anyway.

Wow... This thread deviated from the original topic a bit, didn't it.

My 2p worth, though - I don't have an issue with the @ style reply, infact I
kind of find it better if you respond to multiple people in the same mail.

The top post/bottom post I understand, to keep the flow of the thread easier to

reason).

2011-02-22 Thread Alexander Birchall

Hi John and Tyler,

The situation is that the server was moved to a virtual platform a few months
ago. Since then I only have remote access if the server has fully restarted.
If a problem such as this develops, then I have to rely on our IT department
(where linux skills are thin on the ground) who in turn rely on the providers
of the virtual platform.

1. The providers of the virtual platform report that they have restarted the
server, but this has not restored my access.

2. I do not get a response from pinging the server -- however, I have heard
that ping has been disabled by our network administrators.

3. This is what the monitor was displaying:

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:

-- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
-- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)

This is likely an error with Grub (especially if you switched to Grub2)
or the initramfs image. The use of /dev/mapper indicates you need the
dmsetup package. Boot it using a recovery/live CD, and install all the
booting from funny stuff packages:

apt-get install lvm2 evms dmsetup

These will rebuild the initramfs images to include support for a bunch
of special boot configurations.

I'm sorry I don't have better news for you.
