The daily build will literally change every day, so it is worth considering. The beta2 is frozen in time and is now very old indeed. I just updated a beta 2 which already had some updates 12 days ago, and over 300 updates came down. The live session from a cd will be a useful indicator of the match you have with your hardware. It is a low commitment, convenient test, and also can be a toolkit. The boot parameters can easily be edited if you really need to. The release ubuntu is a modern software aimed mostly at modern hardware. Even so, I use it on some incredibly old machines, with a little care. It runs only in 2D on my dual core PC. However, Lubuntu, and Xubutu are deliberately aimed at older machines, so techniques used will be less likely to give trouble in machines you have used for years. -- alan cocks -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

I really hope we can help you to sort it. Can you get into the commandline and tell anything from there while you are trying to install? Regards, Barry. Hi, Thanks for the offers of help, but I am now resigned to waiting a week or two for the 'official release' and I am sure Unity has improved since my last encounter (11.04) and although I am not writing it off as a UI (or DE) it will have to be fantastic to fully convert me. It does seem strange that Xubuntu installs first time with no errors (did have a crash report earlier, but didn't effect me, must have been a background thing) where as the Ubuntu Beta 2 with basically the same installer did not. For info it was not the daily build as I have tried these before with no success. Nor did I try the live desktop as I have enough machines / hard drives to just install and play around with it so I went straight for the install as I have many times before. I do as a matter of course check the MD5sum (as K3b displays it when loading the .iso image and it only takes 2 mins) If in a week or so when I get around to trying it again I still have issues I will pay more attention to the error message and (after googleing) I shall ask the many helpful readers of this list for help! If it > was still Alpha I would of course report the bug(s) but it is too late > now to effect the release (I believe). Bugs: I reported a 'bug' this morning - one which affects the install from live cd and had not been seen before. It probably relates to the complexity of my machine arrangement, four hard drives and many OS's. However, the developer/s will not easily have access to such a configuration, and if possible a fix would find its way into the regime in months to come. The bug was 'confirmed' within an hour, someone else found they had this. Bugs are worth reporting, it is a continuous process. Booting: The information about your experience is so limited in this list that it is better to handle the details one to one, and my own usual method of that would be initially using Ubuntu forums, where detailed responses are commonly available. I might later file a bug if I find the problem is not mine. (!) You say you downloaded the iso more than once. Was it the daily build, or the earlier beta2? A CD will self check if you allow it. This has the advantage that the drive is also verified as part of the process. It would be worth choosing one machine and concentrating on that first. I have found that today's daily iso runs ok on several machines, but one a dell inspiron 1300 still needed a particular wifi blacklist entry to successfully boot, but I know that later, it can be updated and works well installed. It is worth persisting if you can. It gets easier. -- alan cocks -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
