[ubuntu-uk] Upgraing to Libreoffice 3.6.2 via repository?

2012-10-05 Thread Gordon Burgess-Parker
According to this page
http://www.liberiangeek.net/2012/10/libreoffice-3-6-2-maintenance-update-released/
LO 3.6.2 is in the libreoffice ppa repository.
When I attempt to do the upgrade I get the message that there is nothing
to install as I already have the latest version - 3.6.0.2.
Can anyone confirm that 3.6.2 is actually IN the repository, and if so
why am I getting this message and how do I upgrade?

Didn't need to do that when going from 3.5 to3.6 via the same method -
I'll give it a try though...

Currently he has 3.6.0.2 installed, and Apt thinks that the latest

suddenly make apt realise that 3.6.2 is available; if it can't find
the new version now, then the bit that's wrong is the bit that
retrieves package lists from repositories, not the locally-installed
package itself.

In short - the problem isn't in what apt thinks is installed, it's in

This is a really crude (and my favoured) method of seeing what Apt is
using as sources for a particular package. If you look down through
the file paths, each one has got a URL in it. These are all

gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_main_binary-i386_Packages

which is the 'standard' ubuntu repositiory, suggesting that either Apt
is not querying the LO PPA or the LO PPA simply has no packages in it.

It's since been pointed out that perhaps nothing's being built into
the LO PPA, but I thought I'd share my planned diagnosis with you (and
perhaps incite others to suggest more elegant ways of doing this :) )

Thanks all for getting back to me.

Checking logs would be a good answer. You can use Log File Viewer and try
and things like Error or Warning in syslog (or, 'rror' or 'arning' - comes
in useful more often than you might think) but if it's an abrupt failure
being caused by something in BIOS or hardware it is less likely to log. If
there were any example logs in the forums you're looking in you could search
 for those as well.

Looking at syslog i get the following errors and warnings:

Errors:

watchdog: error registering /dev/watchdog (err=-16).
- This appears to be related to me, for some reason, having two
watchdogs which operate on waking from suspend. Its easy to blacklist
one of them. To me this seems like the most relevant error to my
reboot/restart problem.

EXT4-fs (sda5): re-mounted. Opts: errors=remount-ro
- This is some kind of read-write error, the webpages about which i
don't understand.

error [1349387438.2745] [nm-device-wifi.c:2591]
real_update_permanent_hw_address(): (eth1): unable to read permanent
MAC address (error 0)
- Has, it seems, has to do with my broadcom wirless chip, but i don't
really know much more than that.

Warnings:

dnsmasq[26261]: warning: no upstream servers configured
- I am not sure what this is, it might have to do with my VPN

As i said, it looks like the watchdog error might be the one, but i
don't know enough about this stuff to have a sense. If anyone has any
advice i'd appreciate it.

2012-10-05 Thread James Morrissey
What you could do is to patch 12.04 installation fully.
I don't think i know what this means.

Then try to shut down from terminal
I'll try this as per Tyler's email

If you are still under warranty and /or lenovo phone support is
free/not expensive you could try calling them to see whether it is a known
issue. You can could also manually check the lenovo website for updates.
Is this problem new or has it been present for a while?

Strange thing here is that the problem does not exist under windows,
so i don't think the system is broken. That said, i had another
machine, exactly the same as this one, and the same problem occurred.
So i think its a hardware compatibility issue.

Could you check whether it restarts instead of shutdown on both battery and
main, some similarly if there are any programs that are running when you
 shutdown.
Having done this already, none of those things seems to make a
systematic difference.

using as sources for a particular package.

Did you see Mark Fraser's reply? Seems the update has been withdrawn as
some packages don't install properly.

Thanks for your help!

There's an unconference on the 27th October at the BCS offices in
London, organised by Floss-UK (formerly UKUUG). I'll be going, will

This page http://goo.gl/YSlEN shows all the packages, but the latest version

[ubuntu-uk] Changing duplicate RAID UUID

2012-10-05 Thread Paul Tansom
I have a RAID mirror in a machine that has ended up with the same UUID as
another one - which is causing a few issues with the fact that I was mounting
via fstab with the UUID. Is there a way of resetting the UUID without
destroying the data on the drive, or am I best to move the data, recreate the
drive and move it back again? My Google FU is not helping today unfortunately
:(

Aha, my Google FU has returned :) For anyone curious about the answer it was:

tune2fs /dev/md8 -U random

to assign a random new UUID to /dev/md8

Sorry for the list noise!!

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Creating a library of resources - was Good general book on Ubuntu/Linux?

If I want to collect together a library of problems and solutions
and other resources from this and other mailing lists that I
subscribe to, the main one being Libre Office, what would be the
recommendations for the format and application that would be best to
store these in, with regard for easy searching and retrieval?

Hello Gordon and all

Suggestion 1: The computer file system and ascii files

I store bits of text as text files in a directory then use find and
grep to locate the file that has the phrase I want. A very simple
starting point could be the Terminal with your favourite editor and an
addition to your .bashrc

http://onethingwell.org/post/457674798/a-poor-mans-notational-velocity

Suggestion 2: the local wiki

I've also used a local wiki with Apache and something like usemod
(perl) or moinmoin (python) running on your home pc, with no access
from outside. Wikis can provide extensive indexing through the use of
'backsearches' and you can set most up to accept image/file 'uploads'.
Usemod stores the changes to pages, so you can keep a history of your
thinking. Good excuse for learning how to set up Apache and get a web
application working. Wikis use flat text file based database formats
generally. Some use MySql.

Suggestion 3: freemind to organise files

I also use the freemind (java application) mindmapper. Nice mind maps,
but you can add notes and link files and Web addresses. Freemind files
are XML so data can be pulled out.

Suggestion 4: EMACS org-mode. Your brain as an outline. I've not done
too much with this one at all, I think I prefer just lots of text files
in my Dropbox account with find, grep and sed

cheers

Interesting thread. I buy recycled electronics where I can for pale
green reasons, and because my use need are simple, and I seem to have
had good luck.

Laptop: Lenovo thinkpad X200s around £130 off the well known auction
site. Runs 12.04 really well, manages Firefox with a dozen tabs open,
LibreOffice with large files loaded and a remote desktop connection to
work desktop (I use rdesktop, remmina seems broken). I get 4 hours on
battery with wifi. A student asked if it was 'the new Mac' the other
week because Unity does look a bit cool. 4Gb ram. No chance on HDMI
though.

PC: ancient Xeon dual core HP workstation with a new Nvidia card of
modest spec, cost just under £200 including the card. 4 Gb ram, seems
to just run everything. I'm actually using IceWM of all things on this
because I like tiled windows (3 by 3) on the big monitor. The HP case is
huge and can be opened easily.

I've had the mac line too. It's a great sales pitch when they realise
they are wrong! However it's obvious this laptop should be performing
much better.

fairly technical, suitable for a general user - me!
I'm slightly concerned about forking out £34 for the current Ubuntu

again in 14.04!
Can anyone suggest a good general book, or should I buy a general
Linux book and if so what would be the recommendations for that, or
should I just look for on-line information, and if so where's the best
place to look for the most topics in one place? (I do like big books!)

That New Guy column makes the Dummies Guide series look to the
point... and the unwary must end up thinking that command line is a clever
way of being able to open Firefox... methinks you need more contributors so
you don't have to create a piece with more about Spidergirl and people in
Pajamas seeking out burglars than anything else.
