[ubuntu-uk] Thunderbird ....

2013-05-18 Thread Barry Drake
Hi there I wonder if anyone might take the time to look at:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1181341

I think there is enough information in the bug report for someone to try
to repeat it and confirm. It is likely to be very rare as it will only
occur when a mail account is set up with a different SMTP server from
the IMAC address.

I don't want to post any more detail here but would happily give more
information if you contact me off-list. Please let me know if I've
mis-interpreted what is happening.

Kind regards,Barry.

OK, just checking, as MAC addresses are something different. IMAC can
mean a model of Apple computer, correctly written iMac, or
Install-Move-Add-Change (as block caps) - an IT service request.

Having a separate SMTP address from your POP3/IMAP servers is no
problem at all - this is completely routine.

All right, looking at that now, I can't really verify this as I do not
have a Crosswire account, but so long as Gmail will permit you to use
its SMTP server to send from other addresses, that setup should be
absolutely fine.

Do you have a valid Gmail account? In that account, is your Crosswire
account set up as a valid send-from address?

Yes - all that is in order and I do currently have it working as I have
transferred my .thunderbird directory from one version to the next for a
few years now. I have tried the same method with a virgin e-mail
account I use, and this sets up perfectly well manually with the Google
SMTP service. The problem seems to be unique to something to do with
the Crosswire account that I use. I think you would be able to try it
out using my user name on Crosswire which is bdrake and any password -
try a random digit followed by an uppercase and four lowercase letters.
From what I see, Thunderbird doesn't test the password but only requests
the config details. It fails to get a configuration from Crosswire so
you have to set up manually - the setttings are on screenshot 1. After
that, I get the warning message with no checkbox. Most other accounts
have the checkbox in place, which is why I think I've spotted a bug.

What I've done so far is to re-name my .thunderbird directory and set up
my gmail account so I have a valid SMTP setting, then manually input the
Crosswire settings to try to create a Crosswire account. I know the
Crosswire server runs a higher level of security than most, so this
could be part of the answer. I had to put all the settings in manually
right from the beginning. It is only since the 'Warning' screen came
into the build that the problem occurred.

Thanks for your help with this.

Hi,
I have upgraded again to raring (13.04) (must say wow great job to the
devs!!) and purged ubuntu-tweak (sudo apt-get purge ubuntu-tweak) then
restarted and re installed it.

It still dont work but after a bit of searching through the kern.log i
found error:0 in libkconfig4.so, but synaptic cant find libkconfig4.so
to try installing / reinstalling it so I am at a bit of a loss as where
to go now!

Having googled around a bit I now believe that libkconfig4 is a KDE
library?! I don't know if this makes any difference, but google comes up
with compiz errors for that lib nothing on ubuntu-tweak!

any ideas

I think it's due to ubuntu-tweak having the ability to tweak compiz like
ccsm. There's a bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1041523) saying
that the kconfig backend is no longer supported, but it is still being
scanned for and this error comes up because of it.
Do you have a libkconfig.so (libkconfig4.so) at
/usr/lib/compizconfig/backends? Try deleting it or moving it to the
desktop and try again?

 where
 to go now!

Having googled around a bit I now believe that libkconfig4 is a KDE
library?! I don't know if this makes any difference, but google
 comes up
with compiz errors for that lib nothing on ubuntu-tweak!

 any ideas

 Pete

Hi again thought I'd let you have the complete line from the log!!

 May 12 07:59:58 petes-lappy kernel: [ 4218.531873] ubuntu-tweak[12806]
 general protection ip:aae138b3 sp:ea46 error:0 in
 libkconfig4.so[aadfc000+1d000]

Hope it makes more sense to someone on here than it does to me!!

 Pete

I think it's due to ubuntu-tweak having the ability to tweak compiz like
 ccsm. There's a bug
 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1041523) saying
that the kconfig backend is no longer supported, but it is still being
scanned for and this error comes up because of it.
 Do you have a libkconfig.so (libkconfig4.so) at
/usr/lib/compizconfig/backends? Try deleting it or moving it to the
 desktop and try again?

 Hi,
Many thanks to A, That Fixed It, would never have worked that one out
on my own (just hope it doesn't screw KDE up, but if it does ill put
 the lib back!)

 Thanks again

 Pete

Happy to hear my advice worked! :D

There is a special startup application to play the login sound.

However, some startup applications are hidden. This is how to unhide them:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ShowHiddenStartupApplications

Then you can look and see if the entry is there, but disabled:

Liam - I had enabled the above yonks ago...
but had given up on the chorus music at desktop arrival long before.
I followed the info on your link and wow!
That *was* a pleasant surprise to hear the desktop sound again, thank you.

What had gone missing ( still is] though is the bongos on arrival at the login
screen.

So still nowt to wiggle me bum at ;(

Some interesting stuff there [though mostly about turning it off, not
on].
Nothing has worked... even reversing the off info so as to turn it on.

Why would a kernel update have killed it, I ask myself. Time to look at
other recent updates for a possible candidate methinks.

On the other hand - is bum wiggling really that important [yes!]?
...and I have now got a desktop ready to hum along to instead of
wiggling me bum before logging in ;)

Annoying but not a great loss in the vast scheme of things.
