I can't make it to LinuxWorld unfortunately as I'm only 15. But is there
any chance of buying one of these t-shirts and you sending them to me?

I will happily pick one up for you and send it to you. Send me a message
off-list with your details.

I like this idea; you could perhaps raise prize money by requiring a
small fee for entry. (Assuming there were enough entries to make it
 worth it.)

Nik,

I like the idea too, and I think Adam's supplemental idea about a small
entry charge is a good one. Perhaps you should through it open to the
whole (Global) community and Jono Bacon could run it by the folks at
Canonical for some sponsorship? I also think you could do a nice big A0
poster with a bunch of the covers, for use at expo's and the like? I
imagine the folks in the marketing group would be happy to help.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] ubunto in college, was Re: Women, LinuxWorld, Stuff

2006-09-21 Thread Alan Helmore-Simpson
We had a college IT teacher in the
hacklab once, he explained that even if he wants to teach some free
software he can't, they are locked in a contract with microsoft by which
they can not install any other software on the machines.

Is that legal? I would have thought it was anti-competitive. Maybe
there can be another European law suit, anyone know what happened with
 the last one btw?

MS used to offer very significant discounts to educational establishments,
and NGO's (Essentially its almost free), I would guess that they could
attach conditions to that 'discount' if they wanted and thereby get around
the antitrust laws.

BTW I am not suggesting that is WHAT they do, merely that they probably
COULD.

The European antitrust case is still running in part, I seem to recall that
they were ordered to de-bundle some stuff (Was it media player?), and fined
a shed load of money, but think they have several more shed loads of money
(See Bug #1 - https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bug/1)

Re: [ubuntu-uk] LinuxWorld planning - Update 14th Sept.

2006-09-14 Thread Alan Helmore-Simpson
I'll do some picture taking, but I dont have a website or blog to upload
them. Also I've got a big HP Laserjet printer although it's only bw,
so if needed I can print out loads of handouts maybe? As for interviewing
visitors are we going to have some sort of short questionnaire

I have a friend who's company has a very high quality colour laser printer,
I am pretty sure he will be happy to let me print out a bunch of hand-outs
at cost price, and I am happy to meet that myself.

Jan Vancura, over on ubuntu-marketing has provided me with some collateral,
we can use, and offered help putting together anything else we need - thanks
Jan.

I will try to distil the requirements from the list and the planning page
and circulate a list over the weekend.

I also have a bunch of webspace at an ISP you could probably use, I will
make enquiries and again meet the cost if there is any.

[ubuntu-uk] Help in setting up demo for LinuxWold

2006-09-14 Thread Alan Helmore-Simpson
Hi,

I have a couple of tablet PCs (Google for 'TC1100') they are sexy looking
machines and I would like to bring them along to the show for demo machines
(Trust me, they will turn a few heads, despite their age) trouble is I have
not had time to make Ubuntu work on them, would anyone like to give it a go?
I don't think it will be THAT hard (there are some how-to's out there), but
it will need time and probably more Ubuntu expertise than I have right now.

Please volunteer only if you think you have a serious chance of making it
work, because we only have a couple of weeks.

[ubuntu-uk] Postcards from Ubuntu

2006-09-13 Thread Alan Helmore-Simpson
Apologies in advance for this long message :-)

I attend a number of business networking events each year, the majority of
the attendees are either company owners, very senior management in large
companies / not for profit organizations or management consultancy types,
there is even a smattering of politicians.

The important thing is they could all be described as 'movers and shakers'.
During these events, I usually get into conversations about open-source and
the great Ubuntu project and I would like to be able to hand something over.
So I would be interested in producing a small Ubuntu brochure, possibly in
the form of a double sided postcard or even a business card, that would
contain a couple of dozen good Ubuntu 'marketing' messages, they should be
pitched at non-techies.

I am going to try giving out the few CD that I have at an event today - a
cruse along the Thames - but I don't think this will really have the right
effect (given the type of people who attend).

Would anyone on the list describe themselves as 'marketing types' and be
willing to help put the message together?

Regards,
Alan.

I don't have a business address I can use for this, so does anyone
have any ideas? The address would need to be available for a
reasonable period and would be published on the System76 website.

If Canonical, could provide the address and forward a bunch of them every
week, a couple of us could stuff the labels into the envelopes on a
round-robin basis?

BTW, does anyone know how the CD's are shipped? I would have thought that a
similar volunteer's network might save Canonical some money?

I would happily volunteer to do my share for the cause.

perhaps the ubuntu way of having the light constantly on is better...

I have a number of Flash drives that behave both ways, and after a quick
test the do so consistently across both platforms, one has to conclude that
this is not controllable by the OS, its a choice that the manufacturer made.
The one constant is that they all flash when they are being accessed, and
remain 'Constantly' off or on when they are not.

But regardless of the led's, If you specify the right parameters when you
mount the device, you should be able to remove it providing it is not
actually 'flashing'.

Thats my understanding anyway.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Hi

2006-06-14 Thread Alan Helmore-Simpson

I wonder how important it is to have a Welsh version of Edubuntu.
Perhaps it could be a useful exercise to involve students of the Welsh
language, especially those in bilingual schools, to take an active part
in producing the translations. I would expect such a translation to
require a detailed knowledge of the necessary technical language and
perhaps there could be support via the Welsh Assembly. There is a Welsh
dictionary available which can be used with Open Office and the
instructions to download and install it, via the wizard, are in Welsh.

I have some experience of doing low budget software translations and have
found that it is perfectly possible to use 'non-techie' translators, you
just need to have a 'techie' to explain the *meaning* of the text to be
translated, rather than relying on the translator to interpret the actual
words.

I like the Welsh Assembly idea too.

Is Windows capable of speaking Welsh ?

BTW; Hello, new to the list - I have been watching for sometime, but this is
the first time I have had anything to say ;-)

2006-06-05 Thread Alan Helmore-Simpson

I am new to the list and the distro.

The concept is great and the software is really good. I am having several
difficulties doing a permanent install it right now - but no doubt I will
solve them eventually.

So I would be very happy to share some beer with other users and developers,
it would be a great opportunity for 'Ubuntu newbies' to share thoughts about
the future of the project with more seasoned uses.

All the best.
