Hi,

The bug hasn't been fixed, but somebody changed the status for the fun
of it.

This doesn't work because it just isn't supported at all by dbusmenu and
unity. Note, that while we want to introduce modifier state in to the
dbusmenu protocol (so that CTRL+click and SHIFT+click work properly), we
won't be adding right-click support (ie, the context menu isn't coming
back). AFAIK, Firefox was the only application to support this, and no
other GTK application did. We want the menus to behave consistently
across applications rather than having users open the menu and wondering
whether right-clicking will perform the action under the pointer or open
a context menu instead.

The title of the bug report should probably be updated to reflect that.

Chris

That's not quite right. Being the maintainer, I can assure you that
Lucid will not be staying on version 3.6 of Firefox forever.

Well, the LTS *will* get a new version of Firefox in the future (once
3.6 is end-of-life), although it will most likely skip 4.0.

The RC release is just a snapshot of the archive at the time that the ISO is
rolled. If your machine is already up to date, then there won't be any big
updates to RC - in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if you see no more updates
now until after RC, seeing as the archvie is pretty much frozen solid right
now. If your machine is up to date, then what you see is pretty much the
release candidate now.

As Alan pointed out though, Ubuntu 9.10 already has a low disk space alert
so you won't need to roll your own if you decide to upgrade to this version
when it is released.

The alert that you should see in Ubuntu 9.10 looks like this:
http://bugzilla-attachments.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=137491 (apologies
for the large image). The "Examine" button opens baobab disk analyzer.

Hi,

Does this happen with any other user on your system? Can you try with a new
user? Can you boot a failsafe GNOME session? If not, try running a failsafe
xterm session and then running "gnome-session --debug 2>&1 | tee ~/gsm.log"
and having a look at the output of gnome-session.

Hi,

I've got an old *cough* PC-Chips M810LMR board, which I think is a socket A.
It had an old Athlon XP 1600 in it until I gave that away a little while
ago, so the board is just sat in the loft gathering dust now. It was quite
reliable when I was using it though.

If you're anywhere near Solihull, I'd probably just drive it round to you if

That is unfortunate. If this was the first panic on a machine that is
otherwise normally stable, and it has now started to panic on every boot for
no apparent reason (ie, you haven't installed a new kernel or changed any
hardware in the last day or so), then this is a good indication that you've
developed a hardware problem. If you have upgraded the kernel in the last
day or so, try booting an older kernel. Also, if you haven changed any
hardware (including removale devices connected to the USB ports), then try
reverting the changes. Does it panic from the live CD? If not, are there in
suspicious messages in your dmesg from the live CD environment. What is the
panic message you see? If it is something like "Kernel panic - machine
check", then you've almost certainly got a hardware fault.

Quite likely indeed. David, are you using the proprietary Flash plugin? If
so, which version? (I suspect it will be version 9). The error you're
experiencing seems to be quite a common occurrence with Flash Player 9, and
is much improved with Flash Player 10 in Intrepid.

Yeah, it will be difficult to work out what those processes are because
they will have a short life. For the record though, I see the same
messages as you in my Xorg log every now and again but I don't
experience your issues, so they might be a red-herring. Still, it would
be nice to be able to figure out what clients are being denied access by
the X server.

Matthew,

Sorry, I don't remember reading your original message so I'm not
familiar with the exact problem you're experiencing. Those messages are
generic messages that the X server prints when it stops a client from
connecting to it (for example, it might not be authorised to connect).
"6826" is the PID of the Xorg process, and the last pid in each message
is the PID of the client that was rejected. Do you know what process
these PID's belong too?

For bug 278622, it would be preferable to enable Apport and have that report
a new bug first, as opposed to providing a backtrace. There are already some
crash reports against pan, and the retracer will automatically spot if this
new crash is a duplicate of any of the existing crashers.

To enable Apport, edit /etc/default/apport and change "enabled=0" to
"enabled=1". Apport should then generate a crash report next time the
application crashes, which you will find in /var/crash.

The package lists are updated via a daily cron job, so this shouldn't happen
in most cases. However, I think there might still be a very small window of
opportunity for it to happen for somebody who gets notified that updates are
available, ignores it and then leaves their machine unpowered for a couple
of weeks, then comes back and immediately tries to update before the package
lists have had a chance to be updated again.

Looking through the packages you had problems with, and taking
gnome-control-center as an example - this was updated twice in a single day
very recently.

Those 404 errors look quite normal for packages that are being updated
multiple times in rapid succession. What has happened is that your package
lists were updated, indicating new versions of some packages were available.
Some of these packages have then since been updated again since your package
lists were updated, rendering your package lists out of date and causing the
404 errors that you see (because the versions of the packages you are trying
to upgrade to have been superseded).

There is no point requesting a backport at the moment, as there are no
official packages to backport. It is very likely that OO.o.3 will appear in
Jaunty very early on. Once this has happened, it may be a good candidate for
backporting to Intrepid (and perhaps Hardy) [2].

That's what I meant. If it works with a new user profile, then it means that
something in your current user profile doesn't work with the new versions of
software that you've installed. Once you've established that, it might be
possible to narrow it down further (for example, by backing up and deleting
your ~/.nautilus folder etc)

Mac,

Have you tried to see if it occurs with a fresh user profile?

James/Neil,

The root user will still be able to read files if the user is logged in,
because the private folder will be mounted.

Matthew,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news to your friend, but I think the
simplest way of recovering after losing the contents /var/lib would be
to do a reinstall. There may be ways to recover it, but I don't think it
would be easy, and /var/lib contains a lot of important information
(eg, /var/lib/dpkg keeps a record of every package installed on your
machine, and what files belong to them). I have seen people mention
scripts on the forums to attempt to recover package information
in /var/lib/dpkg, but I'm not sure how well this technique would work.

I would be more concerned about how /var/lib was lost in the first place
though. Does your friend remember what happened? Loss of something as
critical as the contents of /var/lib is pretty bad!

Cheers
Chris

It would be pretty neat if this ran on a virtual Windows and virtual
network. You'd only need a single box then
