Ubuntu's now so wonderful, maybe there's not much to say? ;-)

(Or perhaps everyone's preoccupied with Jaunty?)

Hehe. More like fixing everything that Jaunty has broken (which is
pretty everything right now).

It's also FOSDEM weekend and I think a lot of people had plans to go
there, though I'd be surprised if many made it from the UK, given the
weather.

Sounds like you may have found a bug in Ubuntu.

You could report this bug so that in the future it could be fixed for
yourself and other Ubuntu uses. It could be a problem with the
nautilus file manager so you could file a bug against that.

Actually, this bug is already well known by the developers and is documented in
the Intrepid Release Notes [1]. I have no idea why
the developers decided to go ahead with release with this fairly critical bug
(If you cant get a CD out of a drive, you aren't going
to stick with an OS for long (this thread is a good example of that).

Slightly off topic, but what kind of coding knowledge would someone need
to be a worthwhile participant in the bug team? I'm planning to try
learning several languages in the future (I only know some basic C# and
python at the moment), and so I'm wondering what to concentrate on to be
 able to contribute.

You need hardly any coding experience (some helps when trying to find out
what is happening with crashses etc) and you can definately get by with
absolutely no programming experience.

If you are interested in joining Bugsquad I would recommend reading
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BugSquad/GettingInvolved and
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToTriage. Also, this Saturday is the global
bug jam, so #ubuntu-bugs on freenode will be packed out with experienced
triagers. I would recommend trying out some bugs on Saturday, as if you get
stuck there is a packed IRC room to help you! Who know, if you enjoy it you
can keep going.

Good luck,

OK, I have sounded off but this sort of thing should not be allowed to
happen and I would be grateful if someone, who knows their way around
the Canonical set up, could bring this to the attention of someone who
cares about the future of Ubuntu.

 Norman

It would probably be a good idea to bring this to the attention of the core
developers, who are in charge of packages like this. The maintainer of that
package is Martin Pitt ('pitti' on irc.freenode.net), so it would probably
make sense to talk to him about it. Failing that core-dev hang out in
#ubuntu-devel on freenode or they have a mailing list,
[EMAIL PROTECTED], where they should listen to your concerns.

Hope you manage to get this bug fixed!

David Norman mentioned the bug report at

 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/langpack-locales/+bug/249340

which seems to have been triaged, and has 'High' importance, but hasn't
been assigned. Shouldn't the bug process do what you're suggesting?
(Or may be I haven't understood how the bug process works?)

 Mac

I saw the bug , but noticed it has been set to Incomplete which normally
means developers wont touch it with a barge pole until it has been triaged
by Bugsquad, so I was encouraging the poster to go and talk to the
maintainer to see if he would have a look at it. What I didnt notice is that
the last commenter (and the person who set it to Incomplete) is Martin Pitt,
the packages maintainer, so we dont need to go and annoy him on IRC :)

Unfortunately it looks like its pretty difficult to reproduce, so it might
take a while to get fixed.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] ISPs

I've heard good things about Be broadband (https://www.bethere.co.uk/), who
do 24meg/1.3meg unlimited broadband for ~£15 per month (provided you have a
BT line), which is pretty reasonable. They are also owned by O2, who dont
seem to have been involved with the latest privacy invasion measures.

If they are in your local exchange it would be worth checking them out.

Great podcast this week. Surprising how few advantages, except from Freedom,
you could come up with. You didnt mention the great community out there
willing to help you or the massive eyecandy advantage (For most 'normal'
users, eyecandy is more important than freedom, stability or pretty much
anything else) we have with Compiz etc.

Keep up the good work!

 Yes, amazing, I know!

No, no catch. Well, one teeny one.

Listen to Episode 10 of the Ubuntu UK Podcast and you could win a fantastic
PC from Efficient PC that we reviewed in Episode 9. Just follow the
instructions in the competition segment and you could win a PC. Easy!

 http://podcast.ubuntu-uk.org/2008/07/16/s01e10-easy-come-easy-go/

 Please pass it on!

 Cheers,
 Al.

+1 on this. I still dont have a clue what happened. Would be very useful
