Re: [ubuntu-uk] Fw: Ubuntu and btinternet.com

2011-05-10 Thread Mike Paglia
You do NOT need any CD to connect to a mail server or any Internet service
all Internet protocols are open. The CD just Brands a windows based PC to
the provider you are with. Make sure in your mail server settings that you
have a valid POP3 or SMTP server for BT.

You can use nslookup to find a valid entry for your provider or just ask
them.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] End of Skype on Linux?

2011-05-10 Thread Mike Paglia
I don't believe at all that this is the end of the linux client! Microsoft
are a huge concern who are out to make money. I believe they see there own
failings in the VOIP world and like most other companies where technology is
short they buy in from outside.

I see this as a positive step and coming from me a MAC and Linux user and a
prominent hater of the beast that is Microsoft says a lot.

Develop the product make it more open thats the way forward!

Skype as you all know is just one of the many VOIP/SIP providers out there
this just means it will make the competition work harder and show what is
possible with free software.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Windows 7 in a Virtual Machine?

2009-08-05 Thread Mike Paglia
I have been running the Windows 7 beta under parallels for the iMac and it
runs a treat. I have also tried it in virtualbox running in a virtual
instance of Ubuntu on the iMac and again it performs really well.

Both tests out performed a native install on a dell 620 laptop (ok I know my
iMac is zippy but its still good)

I would just give it a go. Whats the worst that can happen? you have to
create another VM :)

Re: [ubuntu-uk] BBC sound

2009-07-15 Thread Mike Paglia
Hi,

Segmentation faults are caused by programs trying to access parts of memory
that don't exist, or I believe that are read only or even being used by
other programs.

I used to get this when the machine was up for a long time and a good old
fashioned reboot fixed it. I know that's not a real fix but when your not
sure how to fix it and you want to get on then its as good as any.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Word 2002 under Wine?

2009-07-09 Thread Mike Paglia
I must admit I have struggled with windows and Linux from a very early
stage, as far back as 1992. I just did not want to go down the MS route. I
have never believed in it so tried early doors of Slackware then Red hat
blah blah blah. I now have gone over to iMAC which I love because of the
UNIX back end and of course its not MS (apart from their share holding in
apple of course).
I have to say publicly that linux has been a struggle its not for your
normal windows punter as it takes a bit of thought. I just want to say to
the linux users out there going the Linux route is not easy, you just cant
download an application and blindly answer Yes...YesYes you have to
think about what you are doing. As long as this scenario stays Linux
platforms will always be in the background. (well so say I)

Linux needs to be as friendly as Windows without the windows price and shit!

Ubuntu is a massive step forward but even now not quite up to the windows
ease of use.

Remember guys I hate the MS so no flames please
