[ubuntu-uk] Changes imposed

2013-02-21 Thread Alex Cockell

Hi folks

reading the thread on Nautilus being messed up by the Gnome devs...
someone commented on how MS users may be trading up on usability - if
they are Windows 7 users - they'd be getting hampered.

What is it that's led to the GNOME developers messing it up for their
end-users anyway? Don't they want it widely used in production?

[ubuntu-uk] Netflix and Love Film - lost Blinkbox as well

2012-08-27 Thread Alex Cockell
Hi folks,

We've lost Blinkbox as well...

*sigh*... maybe Canonical could ask around, and possibly develop a
dedicated app for each of them? If i'm on my netbook, I'm now
restricted to actually handling the purchase of content etc on the
netbook - at least I have an LG telly to actually play the content.

Linux-based APPLIANCES can license clients - or even have stuff served
up differently... just seems to be the studios are insisting on the
browser plugin being Silverlight.. Could they do an iTunes and roll a
native client that runs outside the browser? And put it in the Partner
repo?

Or a GStreamer plugin a la the BBC plugin that was tried?

Would be no different in principle to the LG app I use, or Blinkbox
adding themselves to Youview...

Thoughts?

[ubuntu-uk] Upgrading to 12.04 - nontechnical users

2012-04-30 Thread alex
hi Alan,

"

"well it doesn't hose the system, it upgrades it to newer and better
stuff." Yeah - but from the perspective of the average non-tech user
(who was just hitting Next Next Next so they could go to cBeebies - a
major upgrade DOES need to be a deliberate action

(return return return... WTF is my box doing?!

Dumped into Unity after reboots - user completely lost)

Hence my suggestion of making the default highlighted button "no", so
they have to actively choose "yes".

Thoughts?

2012-04-30 Thread alex

Whoops - forgot to say what I DID learn the hard way.

When I accepted the upgrade from ubuntu 10.04 alpha to 10.04 LTS, I
had my mouse plugged in - the build then wouldn't read either my
mouse or the onboard trackpad.

I didn't make this mistake when upgrading the 910 instance on this
or my main R61's Hardy install (again, originally preinstalled by
Linux Emporium).

Stuff like this needs to be flagged to users WAY before they finally
accept the upgrade.

[ubuntu-uk] Upgrading to 12.04 - catering tor nontechnical users

2012-04-30 Thread alex
Hi folks,

Looking at those screenshots, there is one GLARING omission... the
default radio button is "YES - I do want to upgrade".  With the risk
for non-technical users, surely this should have the default radio
button (which actions when you hit Return) set as NO.

This way, upgrades are a deliberate action.  Maybe YES should take
the user into a warning page, "Show me what I get" stuff, and almost
an "Are you sure" cycle with several backout options offered.

Non-tech users shouldn't be left with "Accept default option...
'hose' system".  Much better to be warned "This will replace your
operating environment - are you sure?" "Are you REALLY sure?"
Then go to the "Start upgrade/cancel page.

I found out the hard way (useful about having a second partition
running 10;04 alpha and main env running 9.10 production when I
bought my netbook preinstalled from Linux Emporium) that on a laptop,
you need to have the battery in and nothing connected - relying purely
on the on-board pointers during an upgrade.  This type of thing would
need to be warned about - aka

"You appear to be upgrading on a laptop.  Before starting the
upgrade, please ensure the battery is in, and disconnect all USB
devices, especially mice".

... before kicking off...

Consider the case of someone accepting upgrades onto a preinstalled
machine.

[ubuntu-uk] Unity is not working

2012-02-22 Thread Alex Cockell
Hi Andy,

You mentioned "It doesn't matter what operating system is being used, if
a person is
being "lazy" and "can't be bothered with it" they won't be bothered by
it
and won't install an application or setup a printer because it is beyond
them, or so they think.

If however they are full of enthusiasm and keen to learn, they will
succeed
in installing some software, finding it, and running it."

Umm - having worked in a 2nd-line support job for 10 years, I think the
concept of "end-user fear" is being missed here. People who've learned
their basic muscle-memory computing knowledge from a work or academic
context - especially if non-technical - will pretty much always have the
apps that are available to them presented on a list in some form or
other. The idea of searching around and discovering them is likely to
be pretty foreign to them... as this type of activity is actually
dissuaded.

Also - if they are coming to Ubuntu from Classic-type XP desktop
environments, then they'd probably be even more lost if they have to
search for a package - that they may not know. Especially if they've
bought the machine preinstalled.

And if they're a non-admin? It's perfectly possible then that they
could think that the distro is a "free trial" if coming away from
Windows or Mac

[ubuntu-uk] School websites

2011-06-24 Thread alex
 The following comment was made...
"Not so. How can the IT dept evaluate a FINANCIAL reporting application?
Especially an internationally-recognised market leader? The IT dept is a
SERVICE dept. If the MD says "I want such and such a software because I
think we can benefit from it, the IT dept shouldn't throw a hissy fit
just because the MD didn't consult them about what software HE wants -
they should buckle down and install it."

Umm - there is more involved than just chucking an app in...  IT will be
wanting to check library versions used, server capacity required, user
licensing (can it work with the local licence servers) or whether they go
with site licensing.. is remote access needed...
Access management, frequency of upgrade, capacity planning..
At work, the Release Management team obtain a shedload of info, so that
the installation of one app doesn't break others. While Finance can look
at apps from a user perspective - IT are the only bods who can ensure it
is properly integrated with the rest of the environment...

When I did support, i lost count of the number of times I had to explain
why a new app would take 6 months to get onto the platform.

2011-05-18 Thread Alex Cockell
Umm - there's this talk about "middle-clicking". What is this
"middle-clicking" you talk about?

I use Saitek notebook mice... I see two buttons, and a mousewheel. On

I understand left-clicking.. I understand right-clicking.

Granted, I use a Citrix terminal at work, and I bought Ubuntu

I've heard talk of having to press both mouse buttons down together
why do Canonical have to confuse things?

OK - granted, I am more of a basic user of Ubuntu, and use Windows at

[ubuntu-uk] Server shutting itself down or going into a deep sleep

2009-12-11 Thread Alex Birchall
Hi,

I've emailed this list before regarding my Hardy Heron 8.04 server and
it's worrying propensity to shut itself down.

When this happens I lose all remote access to the server, but I can
still ping it and get a speedy reply. And when I go into the server
room to look at the server, I can see that there seems to be a lot of
activity on the hard disk (indicated by flickering lights).
Unfortunately, the monitor shows "No Signal Input" and nothing I do on
the keyboard has any effect. So the only option is to physically switch
the server off and on.

Am I right in thinking that the server has not actually shut down but
has gone into some kind of low level hibernation state? Could it have
taken this action as a "sensible" response to some condition? If so,
what kind of event would trigger this behaviour? Is there a way of
finding out from one of the many log files? Can I stop it taking this
action?

Many thanks for your thoughts!

You want your system to reboot at 09:30 every day ?

Try the following :-

30 09 * * 0 /sbin/init 6

This should reboot at 09:30 every Sunday.

2009-11-30 Thread Alex Birchall
Hello,

I should be most grateful for any tips on how to get cron jobs to run on
a Hardy Heron 8.04 server.

Basically, I want to reboot my server at a preset time once a week.
Currently, when I am logged in as root, crontab -l produces the
following:

DISPLAY=:0.0
# m h dom mon dow command
30 09 * * 0-6 bash /sbin/reboot

For the command to run, I have also tried leaving out "bash" and having
merely "./sbin/reboot" and "reboot". But nothing works.

I added the line "DISPLAY=:0.0" as it was a suggestion I found on the

What am I missing, if anything?

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Upgrading Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 server to latest version? And when has an Ubuntu server "crashed"?

Many thanks for the very useful replies regarding upgrading the server.

With regards to the "crash", I've just had a chance to get into the server room
and investigate. When I turned on the monitor, it just displayed a "No Signal
Input" message, though the green light was on on the box itself. Hence, I had
no choice but to turn the box off an on.

I'll investigate further tomorrow (when I'm officially on duty!).

Hello, Steve and Alex.

I agree with Steve that you would be better to use LTS versions on a
server. I'm still running 6.06 LTS on some of our servers, but I will
upgrade these to 8.04 LTS before 10.04 LTS. We mainly run 8.04 LTS.

Re: Your 'crashes' - Your server may be ping'able in single-user, when
the web server and SSH daemons are not running. Have you checked the
uptime and tried running "last reboot"?

If your server reboots itself, because of a power failure or some other
problem, it may end up in single-user mode if filesystem corruption has
occurred that requires manual intervention to fix. In this state, the
server may be ping'able, but the web server and SSH daemons won't be
running.

Bye,

   Tony.

[ubuntu-uk] Anti-Virus for Ubuntu (Hard Heron 8.04)? Hardware diagnostics?

Hi All,

Would anyone recommend an antivirus product for an Ubuntu Hardy Heron

Also, I have a suspicion that our server may have a hardware fault.
This is because yesterday the server shutdown when I attempted to

October last year, but not since. I could find no evidence of a
run-away process, which I was told could also be the cause of a
shutdown.

I already know about memtest, but can anyone recommend other useful
diagnostic tools?

[ubuntu-uk] Configuring dsmcad daemon to startup automatically on system reboot

Hello,

In an earlier post to this list, I explained the problem I was having
installing the Tivoli Storage Manager client on an Ubuntu Hard Heron
server, following the instructions at
http://www.adsm.org/forum/showthread.php?t=16637. As a result of useful
replies from Jonathon Fernyhough and Alan Lord, I managed to get the
installation working and was able to do an incremental backup.

I am now trying to get the dsmcad daemon configured to startup
automatically on system reboot. From the website
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=663&context=SSGSG7&q1=linux
+start+dsmcad&uid=swg21240599&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8&lang=en I located a
script for the "Automatic startup of dsmcad daemon on system reboot on
SUSE Linux".

I then followed the instructions at
http://embraceubuntu.com/2005/09/07/adding-a-startup-script-to-be-run-at
-bootup/, but after several attempts nothing is happening.

Presumably, something is being logged somewhere, but where?

Many thanks for any suggestions!

[ubuntu-uk] Scheduling a reboot of Ubuntu?

2009-06-15 Thread Alex Birchall
Hi,

I'd like to schedule a reboot of my Ubuntu server.

When I type sudo crontab -l at the prompt, the following is displayed:

As I understand it, this should mean that at 40 minutes past 12 each day
the user eprints will issue the command reboot.

The problem is, nothing appears to be happening.

Do I need to specify the user?

Should the entries be separated by spaces, or tabs?

Any advice gratefully received.

Hi,

I have a Ubuntu server (8.04 Hardy Heron) that surprisingly appears to
be running very short of space.

Disk Usage Analyzer is reporting file system capacity as 4.9 GB. But I
am sure this is wrong. My question is, how can I confirm this?

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Route Planning Solution?

2008-04-14 Thread Alex Barrett
This looks very interesting! Thank you Stephen!

At the very least it would give me an interesting coding project to try
create a usable GUI for it in my, rather abundant, spare time!

One of the other things I am trying out is getting Sony's Route Finder
app to work under WINE, But an Open Source solution is always preferred,
especially if its something I can contribute to.

These are pretty useless to me as they don't contain width/height/weight

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Route Planning Solution?

2008-04-14 Thread Alex Barrett
All,

Thanks for your replies so far guys but Is there nothing out there like
Autoroute? or a method to get Autoroute to work.

They also have contracts for farm machinery transportation so YES they
do send me to vague addresses, I can assure you that "Grenaciers Farm,
Yzeure" is a valid address to the transport office!

I am oldschool in my methods most the time, and I own lots of maps, but
my new company has routes going everywhere from Bulgaria to Portugal,
and carrying enough maps with enough detail on them for that area simply
takes up too much room, when my laptop could hopefully do the job.

I also have a 3G card on the Vodaphone network, that does work abroad,
in fact I used it in Denmark a few months ago and for 3 hours usage over
a week I had to pay £157 - I can't remember how many MB that worked out
as but I would imagine Google Earth or the suchlike would kill it.

So thank you for your suggestions but I REALLY need an offline, desktop,
mapping solution as nothing else fits my needs.

Thank you.

Alex

[ubuntu-uk] Route Planning Solution?

2008-04-13 Thread Alex Barrett
Hi guys,

I'm starting a career as a long distance lorry driver and am looking for
some way to get a route planning solution, such as Autoroute onto my
Xubuntu laptop - which I carry with me as I go.

I can't always guarantee I'll have internet access so web only solutions
such as Google maps are no good to me.
My SatNav is good but only up to a certain point when you start
searching for things with vague addresses.

Has anyone got Autoroute working under WINE perhaps, or is there some
other software that I could use?

Many thanks in advance,

Alex

If you have savvy teenagers Christopher then you are probably wasting
your time!
It was having tech savvy parents in my teenage years that insisted on
"locking down" my machine that made me learn about TCP/IP, command line
etc along with all the other things that allowed me to circumnavigate my
way around their blocks and get access to play my games online and chat
to others.

In fact its probably a good way of preparing them for the transition to
*buntu!

One thing though, and this is the main reason I replied, most games sold
these days have a significant emphasis on online play, have you checked
with the kids that you won't be spoiling their multiplayer capabilities?

All the best,

Alex

Howdy John,

Can I also add that the Ubuntu Mozilla Team has a build of IceApe
available in our Preview Archives [0], this is basically the Debian
version of SeaMonkey.. We are still looking for testers for it as it is
intended to be available for Gutsy.. so if you would like to install it
from there it might be easier, (however please remember these are still
preview archives and sometimes the software might be broken)..

Thanks, Alex.

If something goes without saying, let it.

Open it using the Windows Media Player.. You will get a .asx file, go to
the source, copy the URL, download that file.. (Using 'File -> Save Page
As..').. Then open it up in your favourite text editor, (it is just an
XML file), then copy the URL of the .wmv file.. Open it up again in
firefox and use 'File -> Save Page As.. again and you have the stream :)

Thanks, Alex.

You need to be logged in via your web browser, I use F-Spot a lot to
upload to Flickr, you have to login first using Firefox, (may have to
use the 'Keep logged in' checkbox also), then go to F-Spot and it will
send you to Flickr to allow F-Spot to have Read/Write support, once you
have allowed that, it should allow you to authorise your account, then
you will have the list of photos which you selected in an final upload
dialogue screen..

Each step is literally 1 push of a button, it should take under a minute :)

Good Luck, Alex.

This happened to me when running an Alpha version with the nVidia
driver, however it is now fixed for me at least with the driver
installed via the new restricted drivers manager..

Maybe the transfer of the driver wasn't picked up into the new Driver
manager...?

Hello guys,

I got a request via Dean Sas on the British Ubuntu Mailing list for

Well I think that a talk and a demo of Gnome's (Metacity's) Compositing
features, (more planned for 2.18 I believe?) Would be very interesting
for many users. Dean proposed a few names which I have forwarded below.

I am little new to this, so don't shoot me down if this has been
discussed already, would it be possible to get a WebCal set-up for
