[ubuntu-uk] Changes imposed
Hi folks reading the thread on Nautilus being messed up by the Gnome devs... someone commented on how MS users may be trading up on usability - if they are Windows 7 users - they'd be getting hampered. What is it that's led to the GNOME developers messing it up for their end-users anyway? Don't they want it widely used in production? -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
[ubuntu-uk] Netflix and Love Film - lost Blinkbox as well
Hi folks, We've lost Blinkbox as well... *sigh*... maybe Canonical could ask around, and possibly develop a dedicated app for each of them? If i'm on my netbook, I'm now restricted to actually handling the purchase of content etc on the netbook - at least I have an LG telly to actually play the content. Linux-based APPLIANCES can license clients - or even have stuff served up differently... just seems to be the studios are insisting on the browser plugin being Silverlight.. Could they do an iTunes and roll a native client that runs outside the browser? And put it in the Partner repo? Or a GStreamer plugin a la the BBC plugin that was tried? Would be no different in principle to the LG app I use, or Blinkbox adding themselves to Youview... [ubuntu-uk] Upgrading to 12.04 - nontechnical users
hi Alan, " "well it doesn't hose the system, it upgrades it to newer and better stuff." Yeah - but from the perspective of the average non-tech user (who was just hitting Next Next Next so they could go to cBeebies - a major upgrade DOES need to be a deliberate action (return return return... WTF is my box doing?! Dumped into Unity after reboots - user completely lost) Hence my suggestion of making the default highlighted button "no", so they have to actively choose "yes". Re: [ubuntu-uk] Upgrading to 12.04 - catering tor nontechnical users
Whoops - forgot to say what I DID learn the hard way. When I accepted the upgrade from ubuntu 10.04 alpha to 10.04 LTS, I had my mouse plugged in - the build then wouldn't read either my mouse or the onboard trackpad. I didn't make this mistake when upgrading the 910 instance on this or my main R61's Hardy install (again, originally preinstalled by Linux Emporium). Stuff like this needs to be flagged to users WAY before they finally accept the upgrade. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
[ubuntu-uk] Upgrading to 12.04 - catering tor nontechnical users
Hi folks, Looking at those screenshots, there is one GLARING omission... the default radio button is "YES - I do want to upgrade". With the risk for non-technical users, surely this should have the default radio button (which actions when you hit Return) set as NO. This way, upgrades are a deliberate action. Maybe YES should take the user into a warning page, "Show me what I get" stuff, and almost an "Are you sure" cycle with several backout options offered. Non-tech users shouldn't be left with "Accept default option... 'hose' system". Much better to be warned "This will replace your operating environment - are you sure?" "Are you REALLY sure?" Then go to the "Start upgrade/cancel page. I found out the hard way (useful about having a second partition running 10;04 alpha and main env running 9.10 production when I bought my netbook preinstalled from Linux Emporium) that on a laptop, you need to have the battery in and nothing connected - relying purely on the on-board pointers during an upgrade. This type of thing would need to be warned about - aka "You appear to be upgrading on a laptop. Before starting the upgrade, please ensure the battery is in, and disconnect all USB devices, especially mice". ... before kicking off... Consider the case of someone accepting upgrades onto a preinstalled machine. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
[ubuntu-uk] Unity is not working
Hi Andy, You mentioned "It doesn't matter what operating system is being used, if a person is being "lazy" and "can't be bothered with it" they won't be bothered by it and won't install an application or setup a printer because it is beyond them, or so they think. If however they are full of enthusiasm and keen to learn, they will succeed in installing some software, finding it, and running it." Umm - having worked in a 2nd-line support job for 10 years, I think the concept of "end-user fear" is being missed here. People who've learned their basic muscle-memory computing knowledge from a work or academic context - especially if non-technical - will pretty much always have the apps that are available to them presented on a list in some form or other. The idea of searching around and discovering them is likely to be pretty foreign to them... as this type of activity is actually dissuaded. Also - if they are coming to Ubuntu from Classic-type XP desktop environments, then they'd probably be even more lost if they have to search for a package - that they may not know. Especially if they've bought the machine preinstalled. And if they're a non-admin? It's perfectly possible then that they could think that the distro is a "free trial" if coming away from Windows or Mac -- Alex Cockell a...@acockell.eclipse.co.uk -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

If the MD says "I want such and such a software because I think we can benefit from it, the IT dept shouldn't throw a hissy fit just because the MD didn't consult them about what software HE wants - they should buckle down and install it." Umm - there is more involved than just chucking an app in... IT will be wanting to check library versions used, server capacity required, user licensing (can it work with the local licence servers) or whether they go with site licensing.. is remote access needed... Access management, frequency of upgrade, capacity planning.. At work, the Release Management team obtain a shedload of info, so that the installation of one app doesn't break others. [ubuntu-uk] Server shutting itself down or going into a deep sleep
Hi, I've emailed this list before regarding my Hardy Heron 8.04 server and it's worrying propensity to shut itself down. When this happens I lose all remote access to the server, but I can still ping it and get a speedy reply. And when I go into the server room to look at the server, I can see that there seems to be a lot of activity on the hard disk (indicated by flickering lights). Unfortunately, the monitor shows "No Signal Input" and nothing I do on the keyboard has any effect. So the only option is to physically switch the server off and on. Am I right in thinking that the server has not actually shut down but has gone into some kind of low level hibernation state? Could it have taken this action as a "sensible" response to some condition? If so, what kind of event would trigger this behaviour? Is there a way of finding out from one of the many log files? Can I stop it taking this action? Many thanks for your thoughts! These are pretty useless to me as they don't contain width/height/weight restrictions where something like Autoroute does. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Route Planning Solution?
All, Thanks for your replies so far guys but Is there nothing out there like Autoroute? or a method to get Autoroute to work. They also have contracts for farm machinery transportation so YES they do send me to vague addresses, I can assure you that "Grenaciers Farm, Yzeure" is a valid address to the transport office! I am oldschool in my methods most the time, and I own lots of maps, but my new company has routes going everywhere from Bulgaria to Portugal, and carrying enough maps with enough detail on them for that area simply takes up too much room, when my laptop could hopefully do the job. I also have a 3G card on the Vodaphone network, that does work abroad, in fact I used it in Denmark a few months ago and for 3 hours usage over a week I had to pay £157 - I can't remember how many MB that worked out as but I would imagine Google Earth or the suchlike would kill it. So thank you for your suggestions but I REALLY need an offline, desktop, mapping solution as nothing else fits my needs. Thank you. [ubuntu-uk] Route Planning Solution?
Hi guys, I'm starting a career as a long distance lorry driver and am looking for some way to get a route planning solution, such as Autoroute onto my Xubuntu laptop - which I carry with me as I go. I can't always guarantee I'll have internet access so web only solutions such as Google maps are no good to me. My SatNav is good but only up to a certain point when you start searching for things with vague addresses. Has anyone got Autoroute working under WINE perhaps, or is there some other software that I could use? Many thanks in advance, Alex -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.org/UKTeam/

It was having tech savvy parents in my teenage years that insisted on "locking down" my machine that made me learn about TCP/IP, command line etc along with all the other things that allowed me to circumnavigate my way around their blocks and get access to play my games online and chat to others. In fact its probably a good way of preparing them for the transition to *buntu! One thing though, and this is the main reason I replied, most games sold these days have a significant emphasis on online play, have you checked with the kids that you won't be spoiling their multiplayer capabilities? We are still looking for testers for it as it is intended to be available for Gutsy.. so if you would like to install it from there it might be easier, (however please remember these are still preview archives and sometimes the software might be broken).. You will get a .asx file, go to the source, copy the URL, download that file.. (Using 'File -> Save Page As..').. Then open it up in your favourite text editor, (it is just an XML file), then copy the URL of the .wmv file.. Open it up again in firefox and use 'File -> Save Page As.. again and you have the stream :) Thanks, Alex. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

Re: [ubuntu-uk] [Fwd: [guadec-list] Key Note Speakers]
Hello guys, I got a request via Dean Sas on the British Ubuntu Mailing list for proposed speakers for GUADEC07.. Well I think that a talk and a demo of Gnome's (Metacity's) Compositing features, (more planned for 2.18 I believe?) Would be very interesting for many users. Dean proposed a few names which I have forwarded below. Thanks, Alex. Is anyone else interested in getting a speaker on something like Metacity's compositing features, the future of desktop-effects in Gnome? I am not someone who is involved very heavily with Gnome, but I do plan on attending QUADEC07 for at least a day. I think that this is something fairly new for them to present on.. Anyone else Agree? Possibly know any names of people to contact? Thanks, Alex.
