Re: [ubuntu-uk] Samsung M2070 cups problem

2018-12-31 Thread michael
Apologies for not replying to list, I daily update 16.04, presume any
cups updates will be included. Thank you Mr David for your suggestions,
will have to write them, pen and paper to try them. As 16.04 detected
the printer and installed, am processing as a cups issue. I shall
carefully try suggested options and report back, thank you.

Michael - it is standard practice for you to respond to the list not
direct to your responder.
The reason for this is so others can follow the thread and perhaps
learn and/or contribute.

In what follows I have assumed your printer is connected direct to
your ubuntu device or across wifi.  If your printer is connected
direct to your router then there could be router issues.

First, let us determine that your system is up to date.  Inside a
terminal issue the command sudo apt update followed by sudo apt
upgrade.  Those 2 commands will bring us to the latest state.

Next  establish whether cups is installed.
Best way is to issue this command inside a terminal session
sudo apt install cups

Your system will either respond "cups is already the newest
version." or it will say it is not installed or not at the newest
version

If it is not installed then issue the command sudo apt install cups.
If you install cups - best to shutdown system and reboot.  Try
printing after reboot.

If cups is installed then issue these commands
|sudo apt-get install cups --reinstall sudo service cups restart |
|Then try printing again. |
|If none of the above works establish whether you have a
/atc/cups/cupsd.conf file  and if not issue these commands |sudo cp
/usr/share/cups/cupsd.conf.default /etc/cups/cupsd.conf sudo service
cups restart| |

|Hope that helps. |

same

"sudo apt install cups" necessary as well ? Tks.

There was a bug that caused that intermittently on some systems,

probably be ok if you rebooted. Otherwise have you got an icon

If it barfed part way through, then it may be possible to

At the command line terminal window, login using your

command:-

sudo dpkg --configure -a

It should start chugging away continuing the upgrade. If
it just ends
immediately with no output then the upgrade may have
finished, but
something is missing. In that event, assuming you use

sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop^

If that does indeed install more stuff then that may be
sufficient to
have 'fixed' it.

If the first command (the dpkg one) *did* produce a chunk
of output -
like telling you it's installing / upgrading packages,
then it may not
be necessary to run the second command.

If you have run the above process, then I'd restart "sudo
reboot"

Let us know how you get on.

Michael.D

I did a successful 14.04 to 16.04 upgrade yesterday. if, when you get
to the GRUB menu, you choose 'Advanced options for Ubuntu', you can
see which kernels you have installed. You will have 4.4, 3.13 and 3.11
if all has gone well. Have you got 4.4.0-31?

Tony

One thing I did not say, the Ubuntu page shows 14.04 and nothing else
except the backdrop, I have never used grub (knowingly) so was worried
about causing more problems..will try your suggestion and
report back.

2016-04-05 Thread Michael

Not wishing to upset anybody, Sir.
Problem only happened with a Region 1 disk, Region 2 is good.
If due to drive region-locking after several changes, does not explain
the drive "chatter"
MS W7 will play Region one so if I use Ubuntu for Region 2 and Microsoft
for Region 1, no problem.

Drive chatter, I don't know, that remains a mystery.

On 31/03/14 17:11, Barry Titterton wrote:

Hello,

I have recently converted a desk top machine from XP to Unbuntu but
have a small problem with the graphics during start up.

The machine has a legacy Nvidia graphics card (6800LE). I installed
Ubuntu 13.10 as the only OS on the machine. The installer used the
Nouveau graphics driver as the default for the Nvidia card but it gave
problems so I used Software & Updates > Additional Drivers to change
to the propriety nvidia-304-updates driver.

The problem is when I start the machine, after the BIOS text screen,
the screen now goes black with only the following two lines of text on
the screen:-

Ubuntu 13.10 tty1
 login:

(Where is the ID of the machine)

I then wait for approx 30 seconds, without touching the keyboard, and
the machine will eventually go to the normal log-in screen. I can then
log-in to Unity as normal, and everything works fine.

So you will see that this pause at the tty1 screen is more of an
annoyance than a problem. It also gives a poor impression to people
that I am trying to convert to Ubuntu. I have tried Google but all of
the issues that I have found refer to a total loss of display rather
that this temporary pause during boot. Can anyone suggest a way of
stopping this pause?

Can you locate the file in your file manager/explorer? If you can, try
clicking it and pressing the delete key on the keyboard.
Yes, the delete key will remove the content when select all is used but
then Libre Office rebuilds the folder with the same content, i have

Erm Highlight the document in your file browser, right click and
select delete?

I tried, but it does not work, right click just opens it and there is no
delete option available.

Strange as it might seem, even from the documents folder, the item can
not be deleted, id select all is used and then the delete key, the
content clears but the item still shows in the folder and reselection
just shows the deleted content in the document.

I have never had anything like this happen before.
Thanks

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Public library OS choice

2013-06-11 Thread Michael

On 11/06/13 10:30, Nigel Verity wrote:

Dear All

In more than 10 years of working with public sector organisations I
have never found any appetite to change from Microsoft products, no
matter how the case for open source alternatives is made.

Partly it is because many public/civil servants have not the faintest
awareness of any alternative to Microsoft other than Apple, but the
single biggest reason I can ascertain is that government IT
infrastructures are so big, and there have been so may failed IT
projects and disasters over the years, that nobody has the confidence
to contemplate such a major upheaval.

Cost saving is not the driver it should be. Most departments still
operate their budgets on the "use it or lose it" principle. If they
make savings on their allocated funding this year their budgets will
be smaller next year.

Politics are also a consideration. Most government IT is outsourced,
often to consortiums of the big IT service suppliers. To anybody who
operates in the private sector the amount of money they charge
government departments beggars belief, but the public sector has been
ripped off for so long that the costs are seen as normal. Those
consortiums have the ear of government ministers and lobby very very
hard. Any new scheme that provided genuine value for money and
delivered big savings, whether open or proprietary, would call into
question the competence of the decision makers at the top who agreed
to the current contracts.

In the short to medium term the best I can foresee in the UK public
sector is the adoption of some open standards, but it will be a long
time before that translates into a adoption of open software.

One has to pose the question, though, if a department the size of,
say, the MOD decided to go open source tomorrow, are there enough
technicians with Linux skills and sufficient experience to take on the
job? I suspect not.

Nige

The UK tradition is, price the product to a level that the market will
carry, we do not like change, any suggestion of change prompts an almost
court-like demand, prove it, followed by cost and liability evaluation.
Linux gives me e-mail facilities, free movie viewer, (VLC works in
"Windows" as well !), internet access and I have a Windows 7 machine as
well, needed for "Silverlight" usage.
Balance the probabilities, most educational users will have "Windows" at
home, Microsoft has established a huge market, which has created a
massive "Windows" support industry.
There might not be a general awareness, that Ubuntu may dual-boot to a
"Windows 7" machine.

So why might Ubuntu appear to be a poorer choice than "Windows" ?
Microsoft has an established market.
Nothing begs belief, custom and practice is a longstanding UK tradition.
One is less likely to find Ubuntu trained technicians, in education
areas, than Microsoft ones, there are insufficient alternatives to
change this concept, we might feel as if we are being pushed into a
corner to do our own thing, as Ubuntu is not generally seen as an
alternative to "Windows"
Other things like copyright law affecting likeness to existing products,
narrows the availability of "Windows" alternatives.
For now, Ubuntu may be generally seen as another system, sadly not yet
as a real alternative to "Windows",
The government might aim to promote open source as an alternative to
"Windows", but they would not be impressed if support for open source
was more expensive than "Windows".

For now, it looks like "Windows has it".

I can also attest to issues with Packard Bell support. After having to RMA
a laptop 3 times for the same issue (hard drive failures, all within the
warranty period), I was finally placated when I got a full refund as
compensation... for them losing my laptop at the service center. Avoid at
all costs.

The movie rental companies, and Eurosport use Microsoft Silverlight V5,
Moonlight which is equivalent to Silverlight V4 and is not planned to be
updated.
Unless somebody writes a decoder equivalent to Silverlight V5, without
copyright issues, has to be Love Film, Netflix and Eurosport on a
MS Windows or a Apple Mac computer, the providers do not seem to be interested
in Linux at the present time.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Very cheap webcam

2012-05-30 Thread michael
Hi Pete,

To find the hardware type:

Connect the webcam

Open up a terminal

Type in: lsusb and press return. This will display all usb devices
connected to the system

You should get a list containing lines similar to this:

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Locate the camera entry and copy the ID number (from above this would
be: 1d6b:0002 )

Paste into google or your preferred search and have a click around. This
should get you the camera type and point you in the correct direction.

Also have a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Webcam for some
more pointers.

VLC player is said to be multi-region, mine will only play region "0" or region
"2".There is a patch on "Community Documentation", starts, sudo apt-get install
libdvdread4Next line says "Then open a terminalwindow and execute:"sudo
/usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.shFollowed by, "Rebooting may be
necessary"My observation is that both sudo lines require "open a terminal" ,

Yes, but BT has not scheduled our area yet and as the local network is copper,
we should be able to achieve a reasonable speed.A 1/4 mile of optical fibre
cable will probably be cost-prohibitive to non-business customers, I am not
sure what benefits will be achieved from higher speeds when Microsoft download
speeds can be as low as 46k, slower than a dialled connection. We will see
higher speeds soon, but optical cable providers will focus on business users,
not much money to be made fromdomestic customers.Gone are the days when two
unloaded pairs were needed for a 2megs PCM link, with regularly spaced
regenerators, watching streaming video on a data link that sat on a telephone
line, allowing phone service and "high-speed data was never a
consideration. Each transmission system has limitations, if every customer
watched streaming video, the system might fall overunless huge buffering was
incorporated. Theoretically, each connection may receive 80megs or more
data, but in practice, maybe not all at the same time. Will be interesting to see
the developments of the next few months.

[ubuntu-uk] I'm not a Virgin customer

2012-02-03 Thread Michael Daniels

As stated, you will only get the advertised higher speeds with a Virgin Optical
Fibre connection. When virgin cabled our nearest town, 3 miles away, they did
not cut in to our village of 6000.BT will provide broadband to a cabinet, less
than a 1/4 mile away so when it happens, we shoulddo better than the 2.5 megs
that we have already.Optical fibre should be laid into every address, but the
too political, "who pays" policy remainsunresolved.Currently, Virgin seen to
offer the best available speeds, as long as you have their optical
fibreinstalled at your address. For me, it remains a waiting game.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] [virgin media] double broadband

2012-02-03 Thread michael
Had a letter yesterday informing me that there kicking me from 50Mb upto
120Mb...apparently due to them thinking that I am such a good customer.

Have to wait until june though :(

I havent had much of an issue with the superhub...wireless seems a bit
slow at times but no problems when I'm on the hardwired desktop.

The online back software does workI had it running under wine in
Crunchbang

Better stop now before I get shot for mentioning Crunchbang :D

a) it involves changing modem to a new "home hub" that they claim to be

It's a "Super Hub". I have one. It's just a custom netgear device with
a cable modem internally. Some people have had issues with it, but
that's nothing to do with Linux.

B) you would get home security that is not compatible with linux

Don't need it.

c) you would get 10gb of online storage that is not compatible with

Yeah, that's a shame. I tried using the VStuff app in WINE but it
didn't work, but I didn't spend long trying. There's plenty of Linux
compatible options like Ubuntu One, Spideroak, Dropbox :)

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Recommendations for a printer?

2012-01-25 Thread Michael Daniels

Please be aware that most mono laser printers can be refilled for a few £'s,
typically £'s 7-15, often providing more toner than that provided by the
printer manufacturer. New cartridge prices can be almost as much as the
printer. I had an HP inkjet printer for 10 years, always used recycled
cartridges and never had any problems. An internet search of reviewed printers
is a good source of performance information, most recent printers are Linux
compatible, or Ubuntu forum pages can provide "how to" information, or ask here
on the list. Computeractive have published many printer reviews, their
information pages can be accessed without a subscription. Hope it helps.Michael

Mine is set to "Default behaviour" not nice, everything seems to be right but
it works wrong, the wonders of science.I use the list as a last resort, printer
authentication seems to be an unknown event.Problem is, if it is related to a

UEFI isn't something you "turn off". It's a new loader for PC systems
that replaces the BIOS - and for good reason. The BIOS works in 16-bit
real mode, is slow to boot, and cannot boot hard drives over 2TB -
which is now an issue. It also has very limited facilities to
interface with hardware, hence why BIOS screens look like TTYs for the
most part.

You're confusing UEFI with the proposed UEFI "security standard" that
is Secure Boot. They're not the same. UEFI alone does not prevent you
from booting into Linux.

Imagine that you want to buy glasses, and that the frames are
UEFI/BIOS/whatever, and the lenses are operating systems.

BIOS is like the old pair of frames you have that are a bit bent and
scuffed, and generally becoming unfit for use. UEFI is like a new,
stylish and modern set of frames. These new frames might not fit the
old lenses, because of the different shape, but soon new lenses will
hit the market that fit it. You are *not* being actively prevented
from changing out the lenses at will.

Secure Boot is different - imagine these new frames had a lock on
them, and you had to go to an authorised vendor to fit in new
authorised lenses. That lock is the equivalent of the UEFI Secure Boot
initiative. Your freedom to change the lenses has been taken away,
most likely under the pretence that "lenses not certified for use
with" these frames could "cause damage to your eyesight". In both
cases, anti-competitive actions are being disguised with good
intentions.

HTH,
Mike

Well, my apologies - guess I should do my research! Of course, it
doesn't preclude the possibility that this person downloaded the i386
ISO, which doesn't include the UEFI-capable GRUB.

Of course, this is still hardly specific vendor lock-out to Linux -
OSes shipping with UEFI bootloaders can still boot, and Vista or the
i386 edition of Windows 7 wouldn't be able to boot either.

This is going to happen even if you don't have Secure Boot. UEFI and
BIOS *do not* have compatible boot systems. You need a UEFI compatible
bootloader like eLILO or a UEFI compatible version of GRUB - which as
far as I know, doesn't ship with Ubuntu by default. Since there have
been workarounds on most systems as of date that allow UEFI systems to
run BIOS bootloaders, such as Boot Camp on Intel Macs or a "BIOS Mode"
on most PC motherboards, it's generally not been necessary to include
a UEFI bootloader with Ubuntu.

This wiki page might help: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFIBooting

But what you need to know is that this probably isn't the Secure Boot
lockout everyone has been worrying about. As far as I know the Windows
7 bootloader isn't signed for Secure Boot (but I could be wrong).

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Programming in Python User Interface

2011-03-26 Thread Michael Devenish
I'm currently learning python using "Python Programming for the absolute
beginner" by Michael Dawson. This is very good IMO as is teaches Python
programming by writing games; the last chapter shows you how to write a
version of asteroids using pygame. I've just downloaded the dive into python
book so will have a look at that. I've also bought the head first series of
python books - Head First Programming and Head First Python - which seem to
be very good. I'd recommend searching on amazon for python programming and
reading people's reviews.

I'd recommend using IDLE (with the version of Python you're learning) as the
interactive mode is very useful for learning python. I find this really good
for trying out functions. IDLE is in the Ubuntu repository.

Just be aware that Ubuntu is Python 2 based and most new books are for
Python 3. So you may need to type "python3 my_python_program.py" to run the
program from a command line, otherwise you may get errors as Python2 is
different to Python3.

Agreed, Al. It's that kind of thing that puts people of.

Oh, and if this is a top post, blame Google for Android is coded, as I've
never found a setting to change it. Oh, nevermind. Turns out you just need
to respond inline and scroll to the bottom, instead of having a default for
quoted messages. What a pain.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Video and DVD creation ....

2010-11-03 Thread michael
Hi,

Have just done a mate's wedding video.

Agree with you about PiTiVi, excellent front end but poor rendering.

I ended up converting the footage to digital video using ffmpeg and then
used kino to edit and render into the end result.

I also changed the sound track a bit by using Audacity to throw together
a sound track and Avidemux to mix it into the video.

After all this I used the tovid scripts to make the dvd and mkisofs to
generate an iso file of the dvd disc so he could burn his own copies.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Banks and Ubuntu support for business users

2010-10-11 Thread michael
I had this problem once when I upgraded to a beta of the next version of
firefox.

The website refused to let me in due to the browser not being recognised
and being a possible security issue.

One quick install of the User Agent Switcher plugin and pretending to be
a different browser problem was solved.

Have had no problems recently with the banks but The Freemans mail order
website has now decided to deny me use of the checkout facility even
though it was fine last week.

Oh to live the life of a software outlaw in the eyes of businesses.

do you mean that the screensaver cuts in? if so just turn it off.
System-preferences-screensaver and turn it off or make the idle time
longer. You can also tell it not to lock the screen when the
screensaver is active, that way it won't ask for the password when you
move the mouse or whatever.
