I did the same, bought a replacement before finding out about Goodies, thought the repair cost was very reasonable, always good to have a spare monitor around. Re: [ubuntu-uk] 8.04 username and password problemr, closing thread
Have not knowingly reset anything, the root password request follows when I select route shell, followed by enter. I dont have any files currently on the Ubuntu machine, so a reload is not a problem. Why the machine rejected my username and password may well remain an unsolved mystery. It does appear to be loss of both username and password that is causing the problem. Maybe understandable as it would be a major security issue if an Ubuntu 8.04 machine could be accessed easily by unauthorised users. Re: [ubuntu-uk] computer fairs
Yes Rob, but if any contact problems, let me know and I'll try to sort it out. I will not try to write what might be seen to be advertising, but computer use in radio varies from log-keeping to signal processing with many in-betweens! My latest transceiver is microprocessor controlled, and much smaller than the offerings of yesterday Radio Rallys are usually arranged by local clubs so table-cost is less than companies charge and non-profit groups are always considered. Jusk ask, get some Linux users together to help at a rally and help to spread the message. There must be Amateur Radio Linux user out there, please call in and tell us your ideas. Would this be the right place to look? - http://www.rsgb.org/events/index.php I see there is a Dartmoor Radio Rally in Tavistock in May, not sure if they would have any computer bits. Contact your Trading Standards Department, you are not expected to be out of pocket due to defective goods. To: British Ubuntu Talk ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com Date: Monday, 2 February, 2009, 5:27 PM I got myself one of those. It's got a very dated an unattractive looking interface, and firefox 2 beta. It runs a 2.4 kernel on a MIPSEL processor. You cant reach the TTY or a graphical shell, andthe pacakge management/upgrade system doesnt work. The OS is a lockdown so you cant install anything else, except xenium linux which is hacked to work on it. When I tried xenium, it made it permanently unbootable. Then the battery exploded/melted. After a lot of arguing, i got a refund, but only for the notebook itself, and not the 16 quid postage both ways. 2009/2/2 Dr James Stevens-Turner ja...@btguk.org: John, Maplin are offering a laptop at £99.99 plus one at £129.99, with Linux on! I finally found a relatively cheap notebook with what seems like good specs, and was wondering what people though of it. The only thing it hasnt got is a dvd/cd player. I cant even find one that has. If anybody knows of a notebook that has one can they let me know? The specs are Acer Aspire One A150-Aw Netbook, Linpus Linux Lite version, 512MB DDR2 RAM, 120GB HD with a Kingston Technology 1GB 667MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL5 SODIMM Insert as an extra, the whole package costs £200. I wondered if that was a good deal, also I wondered how easy it would be to install Ubuntu on it. As it doesnt have a dvd/cd player, would Ubuntu work on it, and how would I install it? Thank you. Re: [ubuntu-uk] [Fwd: Ubuntu Pocket Guide and Reference -- now available]
The PDF downloadable Ubuntu Pocket guide is some 170 pages, so a long print job, content is for newbies and experts alike, so I agree, a must for any LUG libraries. Lets hope that 2009 sees dealerships offering Ubuntu, preloaded, on thier homebuilt machines.just think, release from those silly Windows messages like Do you really want to. Thanks again, all, for your contributions, no 089 premium rate numbers for help, just the sharing concept of helping each other free! Dell just mention XP and Vista in their user manual, strange for a pre-loaded Ubuntu machine. I am sure that your book will assist with any problems encountered, I was brought-up on Windows 3.1, DOS 6...remember those days? Reading the help requests impresses me, an army of users willing to help at all times, my Ubuntu mail folder is my largest, thanks again and to those of you in the business who give your time to help to promote Ubuntu, maybe I too will be able to help others in the future. Thanks all, Michael, Wales UK It does mention on the web site that it's available to buy in bulk for a discount. I just wondered if there was any interest in this at all? I've downloaded the PDF and had a look through it and I'm quite impressed. I certainly think that my local LUG might benefit from getting a couple of copies for loaning out to newbies.
