[ubuntu-uk] Printer prob

2009-09-08 Thread mike daniels
9.04 detected and enabled my HP1440 printer automatically.
My Lexmark Z34 was not detected, after adding it, a print request just returned
blank pages.
Any suggestions please, (apart from use the HP one) ?
Thanks, Michael

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Free (Broken) LCD Screen

2009-06-14 Thread mike daniels
Sounds like you might have a monitor with a power supply problem, Goodies
Enterprise, of Bedford, collect courier, repair, deliver for a fixed fee which
wil be around the half the cost of cost of a new monitor. Good firm, who repair
a range of electronic equipment.
Hope info helps, regards, Michael

Hi,

I had an LCD screen go on me. It's a 19 generic LCD that worked fine
right up until it wouldn't display any images. It has DVI and VGA.

I suspect the backlight has gone and may be an easy fix for someone.

If you want it send me an email off list otherwise it will be taken to
the tip in a few weeks.

Regards,

Ciarán

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Free (Broken) LCD Screen

2009-06-14 Thread mike daniels
I did the same, bought a replacement before finding out about Goodies, thought
the repair cost was very reasonable, always good to have a spare monitor
around. Repair items must be properly packed, if you dont have the original
monitor packaging, Goodies will advise. They are used by several monitor
manufacturers, Regards, Michael

Thanks for the suggestion, however I've already bought a new monitor!

Just to clarify, the monitor turns on, and there is an LED that
responds to the DVI/VGA input, ie it changes colour when it goes to
sleep mode, and changes back to green when you wiggle the mouse.

So there is hope.

Forgot to mention that I'm in Birmingham.

Thanks Sean, but my Ubuntu 8.05 does no accept my user name or password. Is
there an alternative to reloading Ubuntu 8.04 please. This is the second
problem I have had with 8.04, the first was loss of the disply brightness
control using the up/down cursor keys, solved with an easy patch, then the
rejection of user name and password manifested itself, each problem appearing
after a switch-off.
Is there some way of resetting username and password please, other than an o/s

If you go into the recovery mode, as specified on that link I sent,
you should be able to drop directly to a root prompt without requiring
your username and password.

That page assumes you don't know your username/password... that's why it says...

If you've ever forgotten your password, you aren't alone… it's
probably one of the most common tech support problems I've encountered

Re: [ubuntu-uk] 8.04 username and password problemr, closing thread

2009-06-02 Thread mike daniels
Have not knowingly reset anything, the root password request follows when I
select route shell, followed by enter. I dont have any files currently on the
Ubuntu machine, so a reload is not a problem. Why the machine rejected my
username and password may well remain an unsolved mystery. It does appear to be
loss of both username and password that is causing the problem. Maybe
understandable as it would be a major security issue if an Ubuntu 8.04 machine
could be accessed easily by unauthorised users. Looks like a recheck, then
reload, thanks for your input Sean, much appreciated.

No, it didn't ask me for a root password at all... just selected that
last option on the recovery list (Drop to root shell with networking
I think it was called) and about 30 seconds later I was in a root
prompt (ie. # prompt)

I don't know why you would be getting asked for root at all - I've
never known Ubuntu to want root for any form of maintenance, the whole
setup is based around accessing root privileges through the sudo
utility.

Did you manually set a root password at some stage perchance?

Looking at the hardware, you're looking at about 110-130 plus 20 for
national delivery plus a bit for you so lets say 180 a unit-ish.

You're in the area I'm looking at... but my raw costs are higher than
130, and I thought I'd sourced everything pretty cheaply. If you can
show me how you came to that calculation I'd be very interested.

I'm buying a case (450W PSU included), the E1400, a socket 775 mobo w/
onboard graphics and sound, a 160GB SATA(II) 7200rpm hdd, 2GB (2 x
1GB) DDR2 800MHz RAM, and a CD/DVD writer/rewriter.

As for everything else Mr Pope is correct get onto Canonical for
permission to use the ubuntu branding if nothing else.  If I recall you
have to send a sample machine in to canonical but again chase that up
with them after all they know.

I contacted them yesterday and am awaiting their response.

[ubuntu-uk] Fw: EU rules for member States and more!

2009-03-05 Thread mike daniels

I was educated before we bacame part of the EU.
The EU allows all member States to use their own system of measurement and
currency!
Interesting that a contributor wants computer weights stated in kilos!
Some years ago, trading standards prosecuted traders for selling goods in
pounds and ounces instead of kilos.
Are UK speed limmits defined in miles/hour or kilometers/hour?
Also, the EU rules state that items manufactured in an EU state and sent from,
are liable to the VAT rate of that State, so when Dell transfer production to
Poland later this year, the VAT rate should be 22.5%?
It will be interesting to see if the increased VAT rate is passed on as
increased product prices.
I am sure that many of you will have already seen how VAT rates vary, according
to what State items are purchased from?
Why does the building industry use the millimetre as the standard of
measurement, and businesses such as Maplin think that the unit of current is
the milliamp.
A 1000 millimetre worktop or a 2200 milliamp battery are incorrect expressions
of measurement.
If imperial measurements present problems. a Kilo is 2.2 lbs!
and we still dont get paid in Euros in the UK!

As dell customer you would pay the rate of VAT of the county that the
product is purchased in, for the UK 15%. When dell had a factory in
ROI you didn't get charged the ROI Rate. It doesn't make any
difference where the product is actually made.

If I orderd a machine from poland, and had it shipped to the UK then I
would pay the polish VAT rate, the same as if I had gone there and
bought it in person.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Router reccomendations

2009-02-28 Thread mike daniels
Regret I cant support Linksys, mine failed twice after power surges on a
protected mains feed, loosing all of the settings, I gave up in the end.
However the free pcmcia wireless card provided with the modem/router works ok
with any notebook!
A modem/router should not be more than £40-00, at that price, one should expect
4 RJ45 ports and also high-speed wireless, my replacement modem/router will run
4 cabled and 2 wireless computers with no annoying speed reductions. Sorry I
cant say what make it is, was provided pre-configured by my ISP, but has been
online 24/7 for over 2 years without failure, which is what one should expect.
If brand name is needed, I can try to find it,.

[ubuntu-uk] 8.04 Audio Problems

Can anyone assist with 8.04 audio problems please, video and cd playouts are
ok, its input, mic problem, that needs to be resolved please.

get a mic input into 8.04, there does not appear to be an input mixer where mic
or line input can be selected, I am new to Linux so have to admit I struggle
with it. If anyone has resolved mic input issues with 8.04, be pleased to hear
from you. (If a telephone tutorial is needed, I can phone, anywhere!)
Be nice to be able to configure audio in, audio out is fine, no problem.
Thanks again, Michael.

Hey Michael,
Well first off does your Mic work on things like the sound recorder?
If yes then it's only the skype settings that need changing (I had the
same issue on my eeepc)

* Load up skype
* Right click on the icon in the top right of your panel click
'Options'
* Choose the 'Sound Devices' section
* Have a play with the 'Sound in' setting here and try the test call
to see if it worked

Hope that helps

Amateur Radio rallies are arranged throughout the uk, often advertised as Radio
and Computer Rally. Computers are used in Amateur Radio, would be nice to see
applications written for Linux and not just microslow.
The RSGB has a list of rally dates and locations, please tell me if you have
problems finding information. Michael.

Actually that's not a bad idea. A few years back

from having an amazing range of electronics they also had
 some stalls

 to pick up a

Re: [ubuntu-uk] computer fairs

2009-02-10 Thread mike daniels

Yes Rob, but if any contact problems, let me know and I'll try to sort it out.
I will not try to write what might be seen to be advertising, but computer use
in radio varies from log-keeping to signal processing with many in-betweens!
My latest transceiver is microprocessor controlled, and much smaller than the
offerings of yesterday
Radio Rallys are usually arranged by local clubs so table-cost is less than
companies charge and non-profit groups are always considered.
Jusk ask, get some Linux users together to help at a rally and help to spread
the message. There must be Amateur Radio Linux user out there, please call in
and tell us your ideas.

I see there is a Dartmoor Radio Rally in Tavistock in May,
 not sure if

I got myself one of those. It's got a very dated an
 unattractive
looking interface, and firefox 2 beta. It runs a 2.4 kernel
 on a
MIPSEL processor. You cant reach the TTY or a graphical
 shell, andthe
pacakge management/upgrade system doesnt work. The OS is a
 lockdown so
you cant install anything else, except xenium linux which
 is hacked to
work on it. When I tried xenium, it made it permanently
 unbootable.
Then the battery exploded/melted. After a lot of arguing, i
 got a
refund, but only for the notebook itself, and not the 16
 quid postage
 both ways.

I finally found a relatively cheap notebook with what
 seems like good specs,
and was wondering what people though of it. The only
thing it hasnt got is a
dvd/cd player. I cant even find one that has. If
 anybody knows of a notebook
that has one can they let me know?

  The specs are

Acer Aspire One A150-Aw Netbook, Linpus Linux Lite
 version, 512MB DDR2 RAM,
  120GB HD

  with a

  Kingston Technology 1GB 667MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL5 SODIMM

Insert as an extra, the whole package costs £200.

I wondered if that was a good deal, also I wondered
how easy it would be to
install Ubuntu on it. As it doesnt have a dvd/cd
 player, would Ubuntu work
on it, and how would I install it?

  Thank you.

The PDF downloadable Ubuntu Pocket guide is some 170 pages, so a long print
job, content is for newbies and experts alike, so I agree, a must for any LUG
libraries.
Lets hope that 2009 sees dealerships offering Ubuntu, preloaded, on thier
homebuilt machines.just think, release from those silly Windows messages
like Do you really want to.
Thanks again, all, for your contributions, no 089 premium rate numbers for

It does mention on the web site that it's available to
 buy in bulk for a
discount. I just wondered if there was any interest in

I've downloaded the PDF and had a look through it and
 I'm quite

Thanks Rob, that url displayed my username and the original password is still
valid so the attempted password change did not register.
Just have to load my Yahoo etc on the Ubuntu machine, then wife can have her
Windows machine back!
Thanks,all for your responses,Michael

 Try this...

It tells you how to reset your password and also find out
 your username
if you've forgotten it. Comes with nice easy to follow
