Hi,

So I said things... but they were in the IRC channel. Just in case that
is a bit quiet I thought I'd share them here also.

* Now talking on #ubuntu-uk
Hi, err... I'm new... so Hi (yes... I did just join the
mailing list :P)
 (Also I'm a part of staffslug.org.uk)
oh and yup also I've joined the ubuntu-uk team in Launchpad
Happy to do... stuff - if given stuff to do :P
I would add info about being in that LUG to this page...
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/OtherGroups but seems I'm not allowed to
(I'm guessing my username 'lantizia' would need to be allowed in the
UKTeam wiki namespace?)

So mostly... Hi.

[ubuntu-uk] Hi there

2013-12-05 Thread Simon Allen
Hello, not really sure how this works. Will i get an e-mail back? Sorry to ask.
My name is Simon from Gratham, Lincs and would to love know more about Ubuntu.
It's a thought i've had for many years but could never quite contextualize. Why
do we need money? It costs nothing for tree's to grow, or pick up fruit and
vegetables, build a house etc. so why do have to pay for it? If people just did
what was needed to be done to thrive without having to 'earn money' first.
I've tried to open the discussion with highly- intelligent friends but just get
'try and pay for your food, rent without it' and they miss the point entirely.
Anyway I hope to hear from someone soon.

Hi James,

Good to erm... meet you virtually :-)

I don't tend to visit the IRC channel, just haven't got the time but I
do tend to lurk on the mailing list and occasionally post (although not
as much as I'd like these days, just not enough time in the day). I'm

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Hi all - perhaps you can help (At my whits end) Ubuntu 7.04 freezes on splash screen after install to new hard drive-HELP!!!

2007-11-05 Thread Rohan Omard
Ok, some additional information. It seems that I got it wrong in the previous
post. The feisty live(DvD) does indeed have two entries for the HPT374 module,
one of which is linked to the HPT366 driver. What is curious (not to mention
damn infuriating as well), is that I can see the drive connected when I boot up
from the Feisty Live(DvD) and I can access all the content. However, today I
booted up from a Gutsy Live (CD) and although I can still see the drive, it
would not mount. It gave me some error about improper shutdown or it still
being in use. Also something about ntfs and a very concise option on how to
force mount it (at my own risk) if I so wished.
So, in conclusion for this post.
1.) The drive mounts and is able to be accessed normally from a Feisty Live
(DvD).
2.)The drive is visible but is not mounted, neither can it be accessed on the
Gutsy Live (Cd) without forcing (something I am not prepared to do at this
juncture as the data held on it is to important to me to risk corruption).
3.)The drive causes a virgin Feisty installation to a IDE hard drive to freeze
at the Ubuntu splash window, if it is connected to the Highpoint RocketRaid
1540 interface card at boot up (* please note that it will only cause a boot
freeze if connected to ports 1 or 2 on the interface card - If connected to
ports 3 or 4 it will boot normally, however the drive is not visible inside
either ubuntu Feisty or Gutsy if the the OS is installed on a hard drive).

Has anyone got any idea why I can see and use the drive connected to port 1 or
2 on the Highpoint Rocket Raid 1540 SATA , when using the Feisty Live (DvD) but
it will not work on either the Gutsy Live (Cd) or either Feisty or Gutsy
installed on an IDE hard drive?

Please help me someone as this is causing me sleepless nights and I dont know
enough about linux or Ubuntu yet to try compiling the source HPT374 driver from
Highpoint, yet.

Nuff respect to all the good work all of you do both here and elsewhere, in
promoting this wonderful (if sometimes frustrating) OS.

that one contains a little more information and a theory as to why I cant boot

I would gratefully appreciate any help that you can give me.

[ubuntu-uk] Hi there!

2007-01-18 Thread Benjamin Webb
Hello there,

I'm new to the Ubuntu-UK community. I've recently install Edgy Eft on
a relatively old computer of mine and it is working fine.

I thought I'd contribute to the discussion here, because I am in my
last year at secondary school, and the talk about OSS in schools is
quite relevant for me. I'd be interested in joining any capaign to
support Ubuntu or OSS in general in UK schools. (Haven't got round to
testing Edubuntu yet though).

Yeah, it is a shame, I tried to promote as much OSS software in school I
could, got Inkscape, Firefox, Filezilla, and a few other bits installed.
I just left VI Form at my secondary school, was a shame not to see Linux

Good for you.

The culture change can begin very close to home also with
- being sure to introduce the subject of Open Source and Ubuntu into
relevant conversations with family and friends.
- being able to offer to help install open source apps for friends who
are not PC literate
- consider encouraging or helping your more PC adventurous friends to
install Ubuntu - they will often be sort of thinking of linux,
but since they have lived with windows for years, it will be
reassuring to have someone using linux to discuss issues initially.

I think I've been pretty active regarding this issue. I've corresponded

sign the EDM); I've written to BECTA; and I've spoken with my school's

syndicated on Ubuntu-UK's planet (and, when I get around to producing a

These actions are ongoing, and whilst I will try to keep the list up to
date; if you are interested in what I'm doing (and I'm interested in
what you all are), then I encourage you to keep tabs on that blog.

It's been mentioned lately that the English-speaking LoCo teams have a slightly different role from the non-English ones; since the main Ubuntu site is in English translation of support materials is obviously irrelevant. That said, there are plenty of things that are specific to the UK that people around here are keep to develop and the UKTeam wiki pages should give you a good feel for those.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Hi

2006-06-14 Thread Alan Helmore-Simpson

I wonder how important it is to have a Welsh version of Edubuntu.
Perhaps it could be a useful exercise to involve students of the Welsh
language, especially those in bilingual schools, to take an active part
in producing the translations. I would expect such a translation to
require a detailed knowledge of the necessary technical language and
perhaps there could be support via the Welsh Assembly. There is a Welsh
dictionary available which can be used with Open Office and the
instructions to download and install it, via the wizard, are in Welsh.

I have some experience of doing low budget software translations and have
found that it is perfectly possible to use 'non-techie' translators, you
just need to have a 'techie' to explain the *meaning* of the text to be
translated, rather than relying on the translator to interpret the actual
words.

I like the Welsh Assembly idea too.

Is Windows capable of speaking Welsh ?

BTW; Hello, new to the list - I have been watching for sometime, but this is
the first time I have had anything to say ;-)

Hi TedGood to see someone new here! We're making progress with the UKTeam wiki pages (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam) in the last week or two, so I've added you to the members list there. Don't think there are only four people - it's just that everyone hasn't added there names yet! There's no formal joining to be done, just dive right in and contribute where you can. If there's anything you feel you can bring to the UKTeam wiki pages edit away.
