I've noticed this recently on the BBC News site. The quality of the
written English has deteriorated noticeably in the past 6 months or
so... improper use of apostrophes seems to be a particular issue within
the BBC Newsroom...

ps. since when was offering audio in Windows Media format something to

No mention of OGG format then. It's a shame that the community can't
redistribute the streams in OGG format on behalf of these media
companies. Doesn't take much to do it, I manage to distribute streaming
internet radio around my network by downloading the stream in mplayer
and piping it to Ices which streams it out in OGG format so I can listen
on any computer on my network without using double the internet
bandwidth.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Petition against BBC iplayer

2007-07-15 Thread Chris Rowson
I thought I'd also put in a complaint...

--

To whom it may concern,

I'm writing to you to outline a couple of areas where I do not believe
that the BBC is meeting the essential criteria outlined in the BBC
charter.

The BBC utilises Microsoft technologies without offering an
alternative Linux, free or open source alternative in these cases:

* The BBC Integrated Media Player (IMP) which requires Windows and
Media Player 10

* The BBC 3D photo project found here www.bbc.co.uk/britain

I have outlined why I believe this strategy doesn't meet the charter
and identified the parts of the charter I believe you are not meeting.

* If you deliver content that can only be used by licence payers with
Microsoft software you reinforce Microsoft's market monopoly. When you
reinforce the monopoly you damage Microsoft's competitors.
"...have regard to the competitive impact of the BBC's activities on
the wider market; and ensure that the BBC observes high standards of
openness and transparency."

* By demonstrating a closed attitude towards technology and content
where an open solution exists or can be built in partnership with the
open source community you loose your independence. "...be
independent in all matters concerning the content of its output, the
times and manner in which this is supplied..."

* Relying upon only one company or organisation to provide an
important part of service delivery ties you into one vendor.
"...secure the independence of the BBC"

I'd appreciate it if you could reply to this complaint.

Regards

Chris

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Petition against BBC iplayer

2007-07-15 Thread Josh Blacker

The BBC has a responsibility to distribute it's content to as many license fee
payers as possible, but we must seek a cost effective way to do this -
especially whilst there is no single audio-visual standard. At present the cost
of providing multiple formats is prohibitively high.

Shame the BBC can't get *its* staff to use apostrophes correctly. Perhaps
basic punctuation isn't cost-effective either?

I've signed it and forwarded it on to my local LUG.

I was reading the recent story on The Register about this. Seems like
the comments are 50/50 against and for Linux support.

I'd agree with the comments about releasing the instructions on how to
implement an Open Source player. Heck, even if it does have DRM at
least it will be supported by more than just Windows.

Have you read the press release on this[1]?
It seems that the BBC are not developing the iPlayer for just Windows.
 From the press release:
"We are committed to making it as easy as possible to use BBC iPlayer.
Developing a version for Apple Macs and Microsoft Vista is absolutely on
our critical path."

Although they still seem to be totally ignoring the whole Open Source
community and probably have no plans to release a *NIX
version.

Without even asking the BBC I can already tell their what response would be:
"Blah blah blah... We are committed to opening our services to the

the publishers of their media... Blah blah... Currently there is no way

[ubuntu-uk] Petition against BBC iplayer

2007-07-09 Thread Jason Liquorish

After seeing a lot of posts about getting media from sites such as
bbc.co.ukworking I saw this on the Nottingham LUGs mailing list:

Hi all,
The BBC iPlayer - which provides access to BBC programming for up to
30 days after it's aired - will be released as a Windows only
application, including DRM facilities to restrict users rights, for at
least the first 2 years of the service.

The Open Source Consortium is running a campaign against the release of
the Windows only iPlayer product - including a formal complaint to the
EU on the issue.

To show your support for this issue, please take a moment to sign this
petition:
 http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/iplayer/

and show your support to the OSC by posting us a message (via the
Contact Us area of the website), or joining the OSC:
 http://www.opensourceconsortium.org/

Please feel free to forward this message to any groups or mailing lists
that may be interested in our campaign.

Thanks!
