A friend has an XP system that no longer boots, and is quite excited at the thought of installing Ubuntu. Ubuntu running from CD-ROM can mount the XP hard drive, and so far as we can tell most of the filesystem is OK. In order to transfer Outlock Express data (both the emails and the address list) do we need to get the windows system repaired first, or can we copy the relevant folders across and work some magic in Ubuntu? (The info I've found online about changing from OE to Thunderbird/Evolution assumes the XP system is still working.) When you install Ubuntu it should hopefully pickup the Windows installation and give you the option to import settings and e-mails from your old Windows XP profile. In the past I've done it with Vista and it imported Firefox, IE and Thunderbird items, I would have thought it would also import Outlook Express data too. If in doubt, make a backup of the Documents and Settings folder from the XP partition, if it goes wrong you should be able to restore it from the backup. Then I guess give it a try installing. You may need to run a fix on the drive first if the XP partiton is labelled as not being clean, ntfsfix should be able to do this. When you install, resize the XP partition (don't delete it!) and install Ubuntu and hopefully it should resize the XP partition, install Ubuntu and then import any documents and settings from Windows. First thing I'd do is image it using something like clonezilla, onto a USB or network attached disk. Personally once the above step is done I'd wipe, install Ubuntu and then install virtualbox, and clonezilla the backup of XP into a virtual disk. IIRC when trying to import mail from Outlook to Thunderbird, you needed a working Outlook as the mail file is proprietary to MS and Thunderbird basically used API calls to outlook to extract the data (please note however that recently Microsoft have opened up information on the file structure so this might change in the future). are found in C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
Again not sure how well it imports them, pretty sure Thunderbird can handle
them but not 100%

If all else fails it is possible to copy the data files from an existing Outlook Express installation to another PC. You'll loose the server settings but things like the Inbox, Sent Items etc should be intact. Same goes for Windows Mail on Vista. I've done this loads of times, TBird usually imports 100% accurately,
the fiddly bit is transferring a profile from TBird to Evolution (if you
should feel the need).
If your XP partition is still mountable, line of least resistance is
probably to do the installation from the live CD and import your
Outlook Express automatically as part of the process. If that doesn't
work, I suspect TBird will happily import the addressbook and mails
separately just from their files. Tools - import

Thanks all of you for the rapid response. I had forgotten that I could
re-partition the hdd to create space for Linux without wiping the XP
installation; and I don't think I ever realised you could import from
the Microsoft email folders, without needing to export from the Outlook
application.
I think this evening will be spent playing with my USB hdd and
clonezilla, just to make sure I know what's going on.
