[ubuntu-uk] pre-installed Ubuntu from UK vendor :)

2011-02-21 Thread Ross Mounce
[It's my first post: Hi all!]

I often hear that it's rare to find UK vendors selling computers with Ubuntu
pre-installed.

So I was pleasantly suprised to see this:
http://www.dinopc.com/shop/pc/NEW-Nanosaur-410-95p966.htm

...comes pre-installed with Linux Ubuntu 10 [sic]

On a related note. I'm looking to buy a multi-core desktop, and a netbook.
Any suggestions as to where I can get these aside from the aforementioned
vendor?

   - I want to avoid having to pay extra for M$ software that I won't use
   - I'm on a student budget, so the cheaper the better!

Hi Ross,

Not sure about the netbook, but for the desktop, have you thought about just
building your own? Then you'd get what you wanted in your machine.

On the same website is a dual core desktop machine (2 cores, 4 threads)
that is low-cost and comes with Ubuntu:

New netbooks that ship with Ubuntu seem to be quite rare, but you could try
dell.co.uk

Dell is a bit rubbish when it comes to value for money IMO.

Perhaps that's the Windows Tax.

I clicked on 'Help me choose' (my Operating System)
and the headline says it all tbh:

 Help Me Choose: Windows 7

That doesn't really sound like a choice to me!

But seriously, I can't see nor find any Ubuntu on Dell's website.

2011-02-21 Thread Ross Mounce
have you thought about just building your own?

I'm very happy to unscrew and plug things in/out. I've done RAM upgrades and
HDD replacements.
Simple stuff like that.

But the prospects of 'thermal grease/paste' and 'bent pins' WRT to processor
+ mobo + heat sink scares me tbh.

Is it possible to get that bit done for me, then do the rest myself?
Seems to me if I want that bit done, I might as well outsource the rest
too...

You can have a word with sales and try to persuade them. At the moment,
the only Dell Netbook with Ubuntu is sold in the US but not here. They
offer a laptop, but that's all. Please let us know their response if
you call them.

You might check out ElpaTech : http://www.elpatech.co.uk/basic.htm Talk
to Ed Bernard and tell him I sent you. He's very amenable to do almost
anything, and he might be able to tell you which barebones netbooks are
available and known to work OK with Ubuntu. He only does sesktops, but
is very helpful.

Actually that doesn't seem too bad, it's not that much cheaper at trade

Not sure about a Netbook but for a multi-core desktop, have you

If you don't fancy that option then you could try eBuyer.com, Aria.co.uk
or Novatech, they all sell PCs with or without an OS.

(I'd personally avoid anything with the Sandybridge chipset at the
moment however, even Intel sent out an e-mail to trade suppliers
suggesting that they don't sell any PCs with the Sandybridge chipset
which has a fault in it).

(More specifically it's the Intel® 6 Series Express Chipset and the C200
chipset).

I notice that Novatech have a Linux forum and netbooks(?) like the X10
have models which change over product time. One recently has been
the subject of a struggle with certain configuration, later solved.

On the subject of self build: bent pins and thermal compound - some
mainboard bundles are sold with CPU fully assembled and tested. I
think novatech do this, for example.

Is a hand me down desktop any possibility I wonder?

Funny you should ask... Aria.co.uk have a Pentium Dual-Core E5700 (3GHz
dual core CPU) kit consisting of CPU pre-overclocked to 3.8Ghz (it's
just a BIOS setting) and motherboard with 2GB Ram and a CPU cooler for
£140 inc VAT.

http://tinyurl.com/5ufcyv6

(if the link doesn't work it's quick code 43779).

Or if you want something already in a case you could opt for one of
their bare bones systems such as this Athlon II X3 450 (3.2GHz triple
core) with NVidia nForce 430 chipset with onboard graphics and 2GB Ram
for £150 inc VAT.

Ahh I haven't looked at Novatech's site for a while, I'll have a look.

Aria do this, I'm sure other suppliers do too. Saying that, it isn't
too bad fitting a CPU into a motherboard. I found it to be more risky
with the Athlon and Athlon XP CPUs where the die could get crushed under
a badly fitted heatsink (when I worked at eBuyer it was a common thing
to happen, customers would fit a heatsink incorrectly and chip the die
causing a dead CPU which wasn't covered by warranty).

Although with the Socket 775 (and socket 1156/1366) and the AM2/AM3 CPUs
they have a metal plate over the core which protects them. As long as
you're careful you shouldn't have any issues (some CPU coolers also come
with heatsink compound pre-applied).

Saying that, I have managed to break a pin off of a Phenom X4 once, but
that was more of a case of my own stupidity :-P (luckily the CPU was
free, but I still almost cried!).

Thanks to all who replied.

I've gone with aria.co.uk (never heard of them before!) and the bare bones
Athlon II X3 450 3.20GHz machine.
Building something marginally better for marginally cheaper just didn't seem
worth it to me.

Will have a go at unlocking the 4th core when it arrives ;)

Netbooks all seem incredibly samey still. I'll wait a few months in the hope
that something *really* different / interesting will come out.

You'll find Aria are pretty good, I believe they're based in Manchester
and if you're local you can go in and pick stuff up (although you can't
get the 'web only' prices that way). I've never had any problems with
them and their prices are quite reasonable.
