Hi John - thanks, that's great. Well, normally I use the LTS with VCOs for
obvious reasons but (a) since Maverick will come out the Sunday before and
 (b) cos Lucid doesn't install the onboard cams I thought we'd put Maverick
 on them.

I'll tell people they can bring their own too, and if they do then they can
have the LTS. I suspect they won't though, as they have no idea how to
migrate their data from Win - I might build that into the session or give
 them a handout.

Maybe I can return the favour too :)

Hello Paula,
I've just about recovered from the Ubuntu release party, so I will see you
tomorrow at your event. I should get there around 12 noon.

See you then.

Hello Paula,
It will be a nice bonus to get some feedback as to peoples impressions of
Lucid and Maverick, what they like and what they are like less.

I'd be very happy for you or any one else from ubuntu-uk to come along and
help at my workshop on the 13th, any time between 12 noon and 7pm, with
maybe a social drink or three after that. As this is the first time I have
done something with University College London I have no idea how many people
will turn up, so I could be there practicing my Inkscape skills or be
swamped by rampaging students all wanting Ubuntu !! - Hopefully some middle
ground would be good (for me).

I am working with the president of the tech society at UCL and they will be
putting up posters all over the university soon. I'll also be posting the
event on some of the London communities I work with, like the graduate
development community.

I will be putting up details of the event on the loco directory as soon as I
get through my large to-do list today.

Hello Paula,
If you can bring a laptop with you then that would be great.

I have 3 Asus Eee PC (900, 1000, 1201N) all running Ubuntu, the EeePC 900
has Maverick Netbook beta on it at the moment, so people can see the
alternative to the desktop. I should upgrade the EeePC 1000 at the Ubuntu
release party on 10th http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/team/307/detail/ I am
also running.

Do you have an electronic copy of the helpsheet you mention? I am looking
for something a little smaller than the ubuntu-manual.org pdf. Although
that is a great manual, it is big and scary for a new person. I'm looking
for a simple intro of a few pages or less...

Yes, that was a problem for us, we got the Lottery grant to buy our 6
laptops on the basis that we'd be promoting a more sustainable approach
to ICT for VCOs and we use them for lots of different types of free
software training skills sessions. It's great because we know exactly
how the installation goes on the laptops - they all install perfectly
with everything working so it's a totally positive experience for the
users and doesn't put them off at the first hurdle.

It also makes it predictable enough that I can do an installation on a
projector for them to follow step-by-step and also show them maintenance
tasks in a structured way that seems to work for the kind of general
luddism that tends to characterise the VCS ;)

I know another group that's been doing Ubuntu installs with homeless
people in London shelters that've gone well too.

It's really hard getting your mits on a bunch of laptops though . . .
