Not only are they not supplying non-Windows machines, they say that
replacing with another OS will invalidate the hardware guarantee.

"Dell bought by PC World" - must have missed that press item! :)

My LiveCD works perfectly on my sons new Dell though.

The other site if its not already been recommended would be

I'm a bit baffled as well - http://www.dell.co.uk/ubuntu used to link to a
(very) limited list of Ubuntu laptops - and a couple of Desktops
occasionally.but it would appear that now it takes you to a list of
machines running Windows, with no option to get Ubuntu pre-installed or even
to order without an OS (and the subsequent OEM licence fee).

I think it's only fair to explain the differences to people though between
the operating systems. The number of tasks requiring command line usage are
becoming less frequent in Ubuntu, but this is still often the easiest way of
resolving issues, and that can create a lot of fear for people

The other issue that needs to be highlighted is software incompatibility -
there is plenty of software out there that requires Windows and won't run in
Wine, not to mention hardware that doesn't play nicely in linux. I've seen
an alarming trend in hardware with web based interfaces that require ActiveX
as well (some managed Linksys "Cisco Small Business" switches, Sony IP CCTV
cameras). All of these are potential issues that users need to be aware of
- and rose tinting the issues ruins the users overall experience, as they
see Linux as an obastacle to "doing what they want to do".

It's old, but I do tend to point people at
http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm
when I start talking to them about making the changea "Use Linux, it's
better!" approach without discussing possible issues will likely cause them
to convert back to windows in a heartbeat. I can't chastise Dell for
applying a suitable warning to products they are actively sellingbut
would actually like the link on their website that advertises a product I
would like to buy to actually exist!

Dell seemed to stop the distribution of machines preloaded with Ubuntu, around
the time that "Windows 7" was launched. The Inspiron 1525 which I purchaced
with Ubunto loaded then became "unavailable", but has since been relaunched as
a Windows 7 version with a much higher prce tag. In the past, some computer
manufacturers have refunded the operating system cost where acceptance of the
Microsoft agreement was rejected, with no request for the return of the back-up
cd's, might be worth asking. It has now become difficult to find a supplier of
branded computers preloaded with Ubuntu. My Dell 1525 is a "Windows-free zone"
and will stay that way. The volume computer manufacturers are long overdue for
another "wake-up call". Ubuntu will not just fade away !

I'm confused too! I bought my Dell Inspiron Mini 10v netbook only just
over a month ago - and it came loaded with Ubuntu (of sorts). I've just
looked on the Dell website, and everything with Ubuntu seems to have
disappeared. That really seems a shame. I wonder what is going on.

I looked at the site a couple of weeks ago, and Ubuntu was available as
an option on some machines, although it was 8.10 - but now it's vanished
completely. Perhaps they're waiting for their LiveCDs to arrive. :)

It's still damn confusing though. If you look at the tech specs of the
Vostro 3300 on dell.co.uk (which presumably sells kit for the UK
region), it does say "Ubuntu® Linux® (Available in April)" but that
option is not available through the customisation function at the
moment. So either they're late with their Ubuntu offering or it's
actually not really available in the UK. Or they actually meant April
2011. In any case, what they have on the (regional) web site doesn't
match what they actually sell.

They can do, but it's not something they do in all regions, and not
all models are available.

Basically most of the Dell hardware is 'certified' to run Ubuntu. That
is technically it's possible to run Ubuntu on anything Dell makes and
sells. However it's down to the head of each region to pick which
models of desktop, laptop, netbook and server that they sell in their
region. It's not a global decision. So whilst the statement "Dell
sells Ubuntu machines" is technically true, the fact is they don't
sell every model in every country.

Sucks, but it's true.

It would be nice to think that when you request Ubuntu that
information passes up through the ranks of Dell and somehow they get a
clue that people want it. Of course Canonical are playing their part
in this too, but it's a slow process.

Dell aren't alone in this. It's taking time with all the large OEMs to
get them to ship Ubuntu by default on their systems. Indeed the new
Ubuntu Light (announced at UDS last week) should make it easier for
them to do that.

Cheers,
Al.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Dell with Ubuntu?

2010-05-18 Thread Tommy Pyatt
I had exactly the same problem. The website says it but there are no links
to actual machines, it's strange. I phoned them up and asked about the
phantom Ubuntu machines and after a bit of discussion they gave me a quote
on a netbook that I saw that was listed as running Windows.

The lad I talked to seemed really surprised though, as if it was bizarre to
him that someone would want an Ubuntu machine, and he kept asking questions.
