Re: [ubuntu-uk] Lost internet usage in Ubuntu 9.04
Thanks for the replies, I only just saw some of them today. My email provider, 1&1, on its mail server, had somehow decided recently that about 95% of mail sent to this account was spam (I only use this address for a few linux related things) and so after going into the 1&1 webmail, I managed to mark all the "spam" messages at not spam, and then retrieve them in Thunderbird. None of the messages it marked as spam were spam at all, in fact, I don't think I really get much spam at all on this email address (which is a testament to this mailing list). It's also a fairly important point to include when you're reporting a problem as it's not a standard aspect of your internet setup. An anonymising SSL VPN or proxy may be more what you're looking for. I don't have recommendations but look for Proxify or Megaproxy. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Lost internet usage in Ubuntu 9.04
I have had a few more times of not being able to access the Internet from 9.04. So I decided to have a look at what was running via the System Monitor, and then decided to uninstall tor to see if that would help, and the moment I uninstalled it when I could not access the Internet or the router, my Internet access was back. So hopefully tor was the culprit. I want to have, as much as possible, some anonymity (not because of doing anything wrong, but for privacy concerns), and if tor is going to mess up my connection then what alternatives can I use? Some applications that access the Internet will acknowledge this and others don't, and if it's set to a non-existent or unreachable address, some connectivity will fail and some will work. I found, for example, for reasons too complex to get into now, that Google Earth will use it and that Firefox uses its own setting, so if it happens again, open a terminal and type 'env | grep HTTP_PROXY' and see if there's anything set for it. I could not access the router, although when I looked at the Network Connection, it showed an IP address as well as that of the router, suggesting that there was no problem connecting to the router or for the router to connect to the Internet. So I set up a new account on Ubuntu 9.04, and logged into that. Straight away that user had internet access with nothing blocked, and I could access the router and webpages okay in Firefox. So I then switched user back to my own normal user account and then had access to the Internet okay. So what else should I be looking for to diagnose why my main user account cannot access the Internet sometimes? Re: [ubuntu-uk] Lost internet usage in Ubuntu 9.04
After using 8.04 again for a couple of days and still not finding a good solution my problem in 9.04, I decided to boot into 9.04 again and see if it might work. Bizarrely, it is now working normally again with full internet access in 9.04 David David King wrote: > In my Ubuntu 9.04 installation, just a few days ago, I lost my usage of > the internet. Skype works. What happens when you try to access a web page? Check you have not got your browser set to Work Offline, this is in the file menu in Firefox. Does it work for another user on the PC? If you have not other user add one using System, Administration, Users and Groups. A second user is often useful for testing. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Lost internet usage in Ubuntu 9.04
Sorry, may I just recap on this? Web access has failed (i.e. your web browser cannot find anything), but the Internet connection is still there. So do email and ping work? Try something that is likely always to be there, e.g. ping bbc.co.uk, and check that it resolves an IP address (e.g. 212.58.244.67) If it doesn't resolve an IP address, there's something squiffy in the way your DNS is running. yes, the DNS addresses were there and the same as on the router. David Matthew Daubney wrote: > Hi David, > > It's possible you may not be recieving DNS information.
