MPlayer has a handy jpeg output driver which saves every frame of a video as a
JPEG file in the current directory (It will save a lot of these). You can then
pick out some of them.

You'll want a command line something like:

mplayer -vo jpeg vcd://

Depending on the stucture of the VCD you might need a number after the vcd://
to play something other than the first title/chapter/whatever they're called
in VCDs on the disk. Mplayer defaults to using /dev/cdrom as the CD device,
it's probably easier to make sure that does point at your CD drive rather than
trying to find the right option to tell mplayer to look somewhere else (the
mplayer man page can be interesting reading though).

I don't think it's an issue of "no way to do it", rather understanding what
it is that is trying to be done.

If you wanted to send me one of the .bin files I'd be happy to look at it
and see what I could do.

Not sure what you mean here...

If you go to shell you can copy anything as anything else...

$ cp item0005.bin /home/myself/test.mpg

Are you trying to use some sort of GUI to transfer the files?

This is very interesting and I think I understand what you are saying.
Thus, the CD I have is a collection of images that have been transferred
to a CD in a format that plays on a DVD player. However, this does not
help me in finding a process which will enable me to extract the images
in a form I can process. Perhaps, if there is no way to do this with
Ubuntu I must look to Windows.

One option you may have not considered is asking for the original images
from the person who made the CD?

This would save a lot of faff and may even yeild better results if you can
get the original high res images.

On the face of it that seems a very good idea but, when I try to rename.
I can change the identity like item5 but I cannot change the

I think people are getting confused here...

A VCD is a Video CD, it's physically a Compact Disk (storing up to
700MB), but it contains video files in MPEG1 format (i.e. they are OK
but not as good quality as a DVD), with a specific (like DVD but
different) directory structure. They were very popular across Asia
before DVDs took off (though films were split across two discs due to
the lower capacity of CD) but they never really took off in Europe
(apart from the internet pirate types before the cost of blank DVDs
dropped down to a usable price point). A lot of set top DVD player can
play VCDs quite happily.

A PhotoCD (which some people on here are thinking of) is a Kodak think
that holds digitised photos normally from analogue file, which some DVD
players can play.

The confusion is further enhanced because a while back a video editing
software company came up with a neat idea that photo slideshows could be
put onto cheap VCDs, to add more functionality to their software. This
is basically a kludge, as the JPEG photos are actually converted to a
few seconds off (still) MPEG1 video (there are no JPEGs on the disc)
with nice fades in between.

More confusion is then added, because a lot of cheap DVD players now
'understand' CDs that are packed with JPEGs and display them as slide
shows... confusing a lot people (but we'll leave my parents out of
this:)

A lot of people don't get the difference between all these different
formats... unsurprisingly...

Sorry, missed a couple of posts... so the issue isn't getting the jpgs it's
actually getting the VCD to play?

As far as I was aware a VCD is only a collection of MPGs these will
presumably be the larger of the files on the CD... I think the .dat files.

If you were to copy on of the .dats to your hard drive, rename it to .mpg
will it then open in mplayer or whatever?

Then, perhaps, just use to create your jpgs or pngs.

I did that and after waiting for quite some time the folder opened and
listed 50 .dat files. Trouble is they don't want to open even when left

There are four folders on the disc one of which is labelled vcd. Inside
that folder there are four items, entries, info, lot and psd all with
the extension .vcd. I attempted to open each of these with vlc, the
first three produced a message window full of information and the fourth
not only produced the message window but also another window which said
Unrecognised format for '/media/cdrom0/vcd/psd.vcl'.

I think I will slowly slide down in my chair and snooze.

mind, I will open the disc another way and see what is there.

I installed vlc but, no matter what I tried, the vcd I have refused to
