[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 346645] Re: [jaunty] elantech touchpad does not scroll

You can make the module option permanent with this:

echo options psmouse proto=imps |sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse

Later, when this bug is fixed, you can try to remove the
/etc/modprobe.d/psmouse file.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 331952] Re: [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver

2009-05-25 Thread Martin Olsson
A long long time ago, there used to be an old driver for VIA cards in
the package xserver-xorg-video-via but that driver was really bad so the
OpenChrome project was started to replace it sort of. There is no driver
at all in the xserver-xorg-video-via package... that package is just
used to make sure that old users are transitioned from the -via driver
to the -openchrome driver when upgrading.

You can tell which driver you are using by looking at the file
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (which usually contains both the driver name and a
version number but note that if you apply a patch it will still show the
same version number of course unless the patch actually changed the
version number which is very rarely the case). If the -openchrome driver
is in use you will see many lines prefixed with CHROME(0): in this
log file, and for example if the vesa driver is used you will see many
lines prefixed with VESA(0): or something like that.

I have no idea when the new wireless driver will ship but I assume it's
a kernel driver so you should ask the Ubuntu kernel team about it. If
the driver update is necessary to fix the bug then I suggest you open a
bug against the kernel (package linux) because otherwise there is a
good chance that the kernel team will not see this bug at all.

No, it wouldn't. Your card is new enough to support TurboCache, and it

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 379517] Re: touchpad mouse stutters/stops on slow movement

2009-05-25 Thread Joost Cassee
I can confirm this bug on my Dell Inspiron 510m with AlpsPS/2 ALPS
GlidePoint touchpad. Downgrading to version 0.99.3-2ubuntu4 fixes the
problem. However, the downgrade triggers bug #327428: some pixels can
not be reached anymore.

By the way, doing 'rmmod psmouse; modprobe psmouse proto=imps' makes the
touchpad even smoother, but of course removes scrolling and such.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 331952] Re: [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver

2009-05-25 Thread Ole Eskildsen
Hi Martin,

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, I, who am not a systems programmer,
gets a bit confused when I display a log file like /var/log/Xorg.0.log!
What exactly do I look for when trying to determine which verson of openchrome
I have installed?

The situation is, of course, that when I installed Ubuntu 9.04 I
installed the current openchrome video driver, whichever one that is. It
worked except there was a problem which someone the published a patch
for. As you indicate, a patch is not a new driver incl. driver version
number, but merely a few instructions in the existing installed driver
which get changed. That also introduces some real risks in that, the
changed driver may fix one problem but it could potentially create new
problems which nobody have yet discovered. But I (and others) trusted
the programmer and applied the patch and it did work.

Great so far, but what happens when we get the next version of Linux? We
non-tech guys haven't got a clue whether the driver we patched is part
of the new Linux version. If it is and has not been fixed, then we are
back to the same situation again.

Therefore you make a good suggestion, that we report a bug to the kernel
team! BUT we don't even know whether the driver is part of the kernel or
how to find out and, if it is, how to address the bug to the kernel
team!

So, I have got down on my knees now and I beg you to help us find the
answers to those questions and help us to report it to the kernel team
if that is what should be done.

Thank you in advance for your help, and thank you for your help so far.

Cheers,

Ole down-under

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 379763] Re: Only VESA mode after upgrade to jaunty

2009-05-25 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Mauro, we generally prefer to have the files and outputs as attachements
to the bug reports, not pasted into the comments. Your Xorg.0.log files
terminate rather abruptly. Is this really all there is? If you use the
standard jaunty version (2.6.3) or the one from x-updates (2.7.1) does
it also terminate right after printing the resource ranges?

I see you are using the server kernel. Does it also happen if you use
the desktop kernel?

What exactly happens when you use the intel driver? Do you see the login
screen at all? Are you dropped to failsafe mode automatically? If it
hangs, how does the screen look, does the mouse pointer move and does
CapsLock still turn on and off the LED on the keyboard?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 252094] Re: MASTER: Poor graphics performance on Intel

2009-05-25 Thread bouazza
Well, when I measure performance improvement, I usually use PPRacer, but
even if the FPS goes from ~5 to ~20~30 ( Intel X3100 card ), I still
think that there's no improvement ...

We have to compare to the Intel graphics performances under Windows XP (
my brother's PC with its Intel 8XX card runs games much faster on
Windows ... ), and not to those under previous versions of Ubuntu (
people here compare to Hardy I think, which itself has poor graphics
performances than Windows ) .

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353763] Re: [i965gm] Blender is unusable with UXA (UXA bug)

2009-05-25 Thread Juho Rutila
So,

the static-mesa blender from blender.org works fine even with the
official ubuntu repo versions of xserver, xorg-video-intel, mesa and
libdrm. I can confirm this on Jaunty.

But, I think this bug is still valid because the non-static-mesa version
of the blender doesn't work with the latest mesa (that has Ian
Romanick's patches on it).

Is this status information right? Should the upstream be noted (because
now this bug is duplicate to other bug that is marked as fixed)?

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 379763] Re: Only VESA mode after upgrade to jaunty

2009-05-25 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
 - The problem occurs even with the standard jaunty version (2.6.3) and
2.7.1. Same with the desktop kernel.

And the log files stop at the same place(after printing the resource
ranges) without any error message?

When I use the driver, I see the Kubuntu (in my case) init progress
bar, then I see the Kubuntu logo for an instant, and I see it doubled
with shitty graphics (purpled and striped).

You may try to remove the quiet and splash boot options, to see if you
capture any error messages. Press Esc when grub loads, and you should
be able to use the menu and the instructions below to change the
kernel parameters.

Finally, when I should see the login screen, I see a message, instead,
saying Kubuntu will start in low graphics mode (Vesa, I suppose) and
offers a series of options (reconfigure, view log files, jump to
console...).

If you choose view log files, is there any sign of an error message in
any of the log files?

If I continue with low graphics mode, black screen and nothing happens more...

Until that, mouse and leds are working perfectly.

This implies that after that the mouse and LED don't do anything?

Here's what glxgears looks like when the Tiling line is commented out.

The artifacts are actually lines of pixels from the Firefox window I
have open. Sometimes I can see entire portions of a web page in there.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 346645] Re: [jaunty] elantech touchpad does not scroll

Actually, it's more like :
echo options psmouse proto=imps | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/options.conf

2009/5/25 n3ko n3k...@gmail.com

You can make the module option permanent with this:

 echo options psmouse proto=imps |sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse

Later, when this bug is fixed, you can try to remove the
 /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse file.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 352948] Re: desktop freezes on resume from hibernation

2009-05-25 Thread bob e
I think I've found my solution. Somewhere on the Internet someone
suggested adding an NvAGP line to xorg.conf. I tried this and it seems
to work for me on both Hibernate and Suspend. No twitchyness thus far,
but I have yet to comb the log files for gotchas.

I reinstalled the non-free Nvidia Driver. Nvidia X Server Settings tool
tells me this laptop has a Quadro FX Go700 GPU. Here's the relevant
section from xorg.conf. Added the NvAGP option.

Hmm, well. I am definitly still seeing this bug even with all updates
applied. And yes, it is rather annoying.

I already played around with the various options of the radeon driver
without success. Does anyone have an idea about what to do here?

Seems to be rather specific to only some chipsets otherwise it would
have been reported much more often.

Its also not limited to thunderbird (as I noticed by now). Am also
seeing drawing errors in e.g. firefox or skype. Not every application is
affected though ...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 252094] Re: MASTER: Poor graphics performance on Intel

2009-05-25 Thread NB
I would call a 4-6X improvement an HUGE improvement. However it was Jaunty (and
Intrepid) that showed a big drop in performances, so with that guide I can use
Compiz and some Wine games again as I did on Hardy. And that is why people
compare Jaunty to Hardy. The modified Jaunty performs better than Hardy on my
hardware: Extreme Tux Racer is 2 times faster as I said before, so there is an
improvement. But you are right: Hardy was slow, compared to Windows and there
is still room for more improvements. I'm not saying I'm totally satisfied.
I'm not sure if I can directly compare Exrteme Tux Racer to the Windows port,
anyway Extreme Tux Racer for Windows hits 50-60 FPS, a lot more than that
Bleeding-Edge Configuration for Jaunty.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 252094] Re: MASTER: Poor graphics performance on Intel

2009-05-25 Thread bouazza
The reason I'm not satisfied with this improvement is that we are just
back to the Hardy performances, so nearly 0% loss and gain on graphics
performances ...

But even on Hardy, Windows games that were smoothly playable under
Windows Vista are totally unplayable now, even with these improvements
...

We can talk about improvements only if we can really compete with
Windows, also, if this goal will be achieved, then Ubuntu will really
rule the notebook market ( since 90% of notebooks are based on Intel
graphics ) .

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 380136] [NEW] cannot unminimize windows

2009-05-25 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

minimized windows cannot be unminimized:
when I minimize a window, its title appears in brackets in the window list
applet in the panel.
so far so good.
when I click on such a title, if becomes bold and the background becomes darker,
but the window does NOT become visible (unminimized).
the same happens when I right click on the title and select unminimized.
whatever other menu items I select, nothing happens - the window can never be
brought back.
_sometimes_, for _some_ windows, they can be brought back using Alt-TAB,
but this is not reliable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 252094] Re: MASTER: Poor graphics performance on Intel

2009-05-25 Thread Mike Kaplinskiy
@bouazza: we're not quite there yet. In fact, we haven't even begun
talking about catching up to windows. The main reason is that the
graphics drivers for intel are currently (relatively) unstable. If you
read the bug description, intel is doing a major rework of their linux
drivers.

In particular the two outcomes of this are two new driver components:
GEM and Gallium3D. GEM has been introduced into the release, and most of
the performance decreases from hardy were due to GEM being unstable (ie
failing on certain hardware). The next step would be to move the Mesa
Gallium3D driver into ubuntu, and i am 95% sure it's not happening until
karmic. Then we can talk about catching up to windows, since as of now
intel drivers crash on anything more than glxgears (GLSL makes them
cry).

For an example of current developments in the intel linux graphics world
- EXA support was recently removed, so we're moving closer to a single
stable intel backend driver (on UXA only). But this is not making it
into jaunty since it requires the new kernel. Bottom line - you probably
shouldn't expect improved (as you define it) intel performance on
jaunty without manual tweaking. Or you could just update to the karmic
alpha :).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 379157] Re: [i945G] Samsung TV not detected on VGA output (no screens)

2009-05-25 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Thank you for the additional information. A few more questions:
1. You say this worked in Hardy. Did you use the i810 legacy driver that was
available in Hardy, or did it also work with the intel driver? If you don't
remember, it would be nice if you could test a Hardy LiveCD and upload the
Xorg.0.log here.
2. Do you have the possibility to attach another monitor to the VGA connector
and see if it works? This should tell us if it is something particular with the
TV that triggers this or if it is a generic problem with driver and your VGA
adapter.
3. It would be interesting to see if the monitor is detected using other
programs than xorg. Could you try `sudo get-edid edid.bin
2get-edid-errors.txt` and upload the files here? (edid.bin is binary, but if
the monitor isn't detected it will be empty) You will need the read-edid
package for this. Another program that does this is ddcprobe (run `sudo
ddcprobe` and attach the output here). This is in the package xresprobe.

With the above questions answered, I think this bug is ready to be forwarded to
the intel developers. If you want to give the xorg-edgers repository a try, I
would wait until you have done that and create the upstream bug report with the
logs from that release. If not, it is okay to forward it with the current
information. However, you may be asked to test the latest development version
later to test any proposed fixes. So this gives the final question:
4. Do you want to test xorg-edgers version before we send this upstream?

2009-05-25 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After upgrading my Asus U6 laptop from 8.04 to 8.10, the volume control
keyboard shortcuts no longer worked.

To fix the problem I had to open the Keyboard Shortcuts preferences and add new
shortcuts for Volume Mute, Down, Up to Fn-F10, Fn-F11 and Fn-F12, respectively.
The shortcuts now appear as XF86AudioMute/LowerVolume/RaiseVolume...

Previously the shorcuts had appeared in code, such as 0xab or something...
