[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 376853] [NEW] gdm fails to load nvidia closed-source driver

2009-06-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

On Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 AMD64 using included Nvidia closed-source driver 180.44
as provided by 'hardware drivers'
on a Compal JHL90 laptop (sold by ibuypower) with a p9500 processor and nvidia
9600m graphics card:

after a hard crash, and occasionally even after clean shutdowns when
rebooting once gdm attempts to load, it attempts to use the nvidia
driver showing the splash screen and then reverting to console three
times in an obvious failed attempt to use the driver, followed by the
errors:

(EE) Failed to load module type1 (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module freetype (module does not exist, 0)

and it gives me the options to repair, troubleshoot, return to console.

I can temporarily work around this issue by exiting to console, shutting
down gdm, running startx (at this point, the xserver loads as normal,
shows driver splash screen and loads the desktop), removing the xorg
config ( at /etc/X11/xorg.conf), running nvidia-settings as root and
using it to re-write the xorg config and then shutting down from the
xserver session through the gui menu provided in gnome.

Once this process is done I can restart gdm from the console and it will
then load the driver properly and I can continue without issue as usual
(until the next restart where it may load as normal, or may have to
repeat the process to get back to a fully working desktop).

At the time of writing I am attaching Xorg.log showing the error
occuring, If requested I can also attach my xorg.conf however it is
simply a 'stock' one generated by nvidia-settings as said in the
procedure above.

2009-06-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

The Acer Aspire 5920 has a number of unusual keys, including a $ and a €
key in the bottom right corner. Pressing these keys simply yield no
input in any Ubuntu application.

Additionally, the keyboard's special play/pause, stop and forward/backward are
incorrectly mapped in Totem:
Play/pause triggers fast forward
Stop triggers fast backwards/rewind
The forward/backward buttons yield no reaction.

Most other special keys like Wifi, Bluetooth and even the volume

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 362671] Re: Dual display resolution config required on each restart

2009-06-01 Thread B.O.G.A. IT Consultants
as eZFlow has correctly pointed out, the nvidia x server doesn't have
the permissions, but you can overcome this from the term prompt using
sudo nvidia-settings. What I cannot get around is the frontend and
backend resolution detection. The frontend (monitor/display) gives a
max resolution of 1440x900 however the backend (GPU) accurately shows
max resolution of 1920x1200.

But I cannot change the frontend from nvidia x server.

I did have 100% success when I dumped the 180.44 drivers in favor of the
176 drivers that comes with the distro package under adept.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 382386] [NEW] fglrx crashes using real time kernel

2009-06-01 Thread Stéphane Magnenat
Public bug reported:

Using the realtime kernel (2.6.28.3.1) on Ubuntu 9.04 on x86-64, the
fglrx driver (2:8.600-0ubuntu2) crashes the computer when X loads. My
graphic card is a Radeon HD 3870.

From the user point of view, when X loads the screen shows random
colors, then after a while the computer reboot. It seems that [1]
experienced the same problem.

2009-06-01 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

My X server now crashes intermittently on xrandr events (e.g.,
disconnecting my external VGA display), using the intel driver package
from jaunty-proposed. There don't seem to have been any recent changes
to the driver package available; the only thing I can think of that
might have had an effect is that during UDS last week, I juggled the
output layout in System-Preferences-Display for a slideshow bit.

For once, I do get meaningful output in /var/log/gdm/:0.log.1. :)

I830PMEvent: Capability change

Fatal server error:
i830_set_tiling(): 1: offset (0x0910f000) is not 1MB aligned

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 382431] [NEW] Ubuntu locks up frequently on MacBook rev. E

2009-06-01 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Ubuntu 9.04, MacBook rev. E (early 2008)

For the past week or so, Ubuntu 9.04 has locked up frequently, about
once every hour.

The first symptoms are that the pointer will begin moving jerkily in
response to trackpad movement, and stop responding to keyboard input.
About a minute later, the pointer stops moving altogether. I then have
to shut down the computer by holding down the power button on my
MacBook.

If I switch to a text console with Fn+Ctrl+Alt+F1 when Ubuntu starts
becoming sluggish, I am able to enter my login name but Ubuntu never
gets around to asking me for my password. On one occasion this morning I
did manage to enter my password and run top before the computer stopped
responding completely, but it showed nothing unusual (no process using
more than 10% of CPU).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 381981] Re: Some icons and text disappear in OpenOffice (fixed upstream)

2009-06-01 Thread Wilson Perdomo
With the free driver these problems do not occur at all. When I have the
driver on at random times the text on a page may not appear so you have
to scroll the page around till the text appears. That happens with any
elements in the page your working with such as images, text, etc.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 381981] Re: Some icons and text disappear in OpenOffice (fixed upstream)

2009-06-01 Thread Milan
OK, thanks, so now we're sure this is a bug in the proprietary NVIdia
driver. If the text problem is still occurring with the new proprietary
driver, you may want to report a new bug about that. It's best to go
directly to NVidia's bug tracker since Ubuntu developers don't have
access to the source code, and can only package versions released by
upstream.

The problem of the page shape not being drawn correctly is an old bug in
OpenOffice.org which I don't think is linked with your driver. And I'm
afraid it won't be fixed soon... ;-)

 Bug description:
Keyboard keys such as the arrows, Alt-F4, PageUp/PageDown, etc.
often get 'stuck' and continue being 'clicked' even after they are
physically released. For example when clicking Alt-F4, sometimes it
gets stuck so all the windows are closed instead of just one.

My configuration is Feisty + Xgl + Compiz Fusion. My previous
configuration was Edgy + Xgl + Beryl, where this didn't happen.
Others have reported the same problem without using either Xgl or
 Compiz.

The keyboard itself isn't the problem. When dual-booting to Windows,
everything works fine. Also, the problem happens with two different
 keyboards (internal laptop, external USB).

My best guess is that the problem occurs at time of high system
load. Somehow during these times the key-release signal gets lost
and the key-press is repeated indefinitely. This happens more often
with Compiz configurations because Compiz tends to increase system
load. It also happens more often with power-hungry apps like Firefox
and Acrobat Reader for similar reasons.

PS: When the keys would repeat all input devices would be locked up.
ie. mouse won't move, clicks don't do anything, keyboard presses
don't register. Then when it becomes unstuck, the mouse moves around
 and everything. Hope this helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 323703] Re: [i965] Wrong Reflections in Blender 2.48a (fixed in 2.49RC2)

2009-06-01 Thread daresan
Hello everyone!
Confirm! ;)
I experienced the same problem (in the 3D View the lower part was not
calculated properly and in some menues there were prolems as well, mostly with
refreshing) on my Thinkpad T61 (Model: 7659-CTO, Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated
Graphics Controller) with Ubuntu 9.0.4 and with blender 2.48 as well as 2.49
RC3. I simply added the line as mentioned in the comment from Vincent Lin to
the xorg.conf file:

Section Device
   Identifier Configured Video Device
Option NoAccel true -- this one.
EndSection

(you have to edit the file with su rights and restart afterwards)
I read that Intel is currently working on their drivers and that this issue
hopefully will be solved in summer:

Actually I have another theory: the bug happens when a low speed usb

a theory, but so far I have connected my mouse and keyboard on the same

Crossing my fingers though...

PS: I almost forgot the thank you for looking into this with me.

After looking througth the log a third time a couple things do stand
out, which is what I think you are commenting on though I have no idea
on how to address at this time (A).

This is a standard 8800-GT card (512MB) that I haven't mucked with, so
its pretty Vanilla and popular per Steam stats. I'm reallly surprised
that it didn't just turn-on in Ubuntu ( most everything else does).
Please advise on any next steps. I expect some editing so no problems
there. I did notice that the Video BIOS Rev is not identified which is
odd (B).

A) This may be what you are referring to, but I'm not sure how to
address it.

It's a kernel parameter. The README entry I was referring to is this one:

It appears that the message changed, but I believe this is the same

that problem.

Above, I canceled the second run very quickly, hit the up arrowenter to
re-run it very quickly, and it came back...

This is just weird. As you can see from my first excerpt, my xorg.conf is empty.
My refresh rate is obviously not 1500+Hz, it's the default for my DVI monitor,
60Hz.

Reproducibility? Not sure how I reproduced it, just did it a bunch and
the warning comes up occasionally.

Good luck with this one,
-Derek

PS - Second bug(?) - Firefox seems to think 'framerate' is not a correct
word... :)

2009-06-01 Thread alcCapone
I'm actually still having this problem. My laptop just woke up (after
suspend) with a restarted X session.
