[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 376853] [NEW] gdm fails to load nvidia closed-source driver
You have been subscribed to a public bug: On Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 AMD64 using included Nvidia closed-source driver 180.44 as provided by 'hardware drivers' on a Compal JHL90 laptop (sold by ibuypower) with a p9500 processor and nvidia 9600m graphics card: after a hard crash, and occasionally even after clean shutdowns when rebooting once gdm attempts to load, it attempts to use the nvidia driver showing the splash screen and then reverting to console three times in an obvious failed attempt to use the driver, followed by the errors: (EE) Failed to load module type1 (module does not exist, 0) (EE) Failed to load module freetype (module does not exist, 0) and it gives me the options to repair, troubleshoot, return to console. I can temporarily work around this issue by exiting to console, shutting down gdm, running startx (at this point, the xserver loads as normal, shows driver splash screen and loads the desktop), removing the xorg config ( at /etc/X11/xorg.conf), running nvidia-settings as root and using it to re-write the xorg config and then shutting down from the xserver session through the gui menu provided in gnome. Once this process is done I can restart gdm from the console and it will then load the driver properly and I can continue without issue as usual (until the next restart where it may load as normal, or may have to repeat the process to get back to a fully working desktop). At the time of writing I am attaching Xorg.log showing the error occuring, If requested I can also attach my xorg.conf however it is simply a 'stock' one generated by nvidia-settings as said in the procedure above. ** Affects: nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gdm fails to load nvidia closed-source driver https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/376853 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 362671] Re: Dual display resolution config required on each restart
as eZFlow has correctly pointed out, the nvidia x server doesn't have the permissions, but you can overcome this from the term prompt using sudo nvidia-settings. What I cannot get around is the frontend and backend resolution detection. The frontend (monitor/display) gives a max resolution of 1440x900 however the backend (GPU) accurately shows max resolution of 1920x1200. But I cannot change the frontend from nvidia x server. I did have 100% success when I dumped the 180.44 drivers in favor of the 176 drivers that comes with the distro package under adept. -- Dual display resolution config required on each restart https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/362671 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 382431] [NEW] Ubuntu locks up frequently on MacBook rev. E
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Ubuntu 9.04, MacBook rev. E (early 2008) For the past week or so, Ubuntu 9.04 has locked up frequently, about once every hour. The first symptoms are that the pointer will begin moving jerkily in response to trackpad movement, and stop responding to keyboard input. About a minute later, the pointer stops moving altogether. I then have to shut down the computer by holding down the power button on my MacBook. If I switch to a text console with Fn+Ctrl+Alt+F1 when Ubuntu starts becoming sluggish, I am able to enter my login name but Ubuntu never gets around to asking me for my password. On one occasion this morning I did manage to enter my password and run top before the computer stopped responding completely, but it showed nothing unusual (no process using more than 10% of CPU). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 381981] Re: Some icons and text disappear in OpenOffice (fixed upstream)
OK, thanks, so now we're sure this is a bug in the proprietary NVIdia driver. If the text problem is still occurring with the new proprietary driver, you may want to report a new bug about that. It's best to go directly to NVidia's bug tracker since Ubuntu developers don't have access to the source code, and can only package versions released by upstream. The problem of the page shape not being drawn correctly is an old bug in OpenOffice.org which I don't think is linked with your driver. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 124406] Re: Keyboard keys get stuck and repeat (Feisty, Gutsy)

Status in GNU Emacs: Invalid Status in The Linux Kernel: Confirmed Status in “linux” source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Status in “xorg-server” source package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in linux in Ubuntu Jaunty: Incomplete Status in xorg-server in Ubuntu Jaunty: Invalid Bug description: Keyboard keys such as the arrows, Alt-F4, PageUp/PageDown, etc. often get 'stuck' and continue being 'clicked' even after they are physically released. For example when clicking Alt-F4, sometimes it gets stuck so all the windows are closed instead of just one. My configuration is Feisty + Xgl + Compiz Fusion. My previous configuration was Edgy + Xgl + Beryl, where this didn't happen. Others have reported the same problem without using either Xgl or Compiz. The keyboard itself isn't the problem. When dual-booting to Windows, everything works fine. Also, the problem happens with two different keyboards (internal laptop, external USB). My best guess is that the problem occurs at time of high system load. Somehow during these times the key-release signal gets lost and the key-press is repeated indefinitely. This happens more often with Compiz configurations because Compiz tends to increase system load. It also happens more often with power-hungry apps like Firefox and Acrobat Reader for similar reasons. PS: When the keys would repeat all input devices would be locked up. ie. mouse won't move, clicks don't do anything, keyboard presses don't register. Then when it becomes unstuck, the mouse moves around and everything. Hope this helps.
