[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 360319] Re: [GM45] memory leak causes system to run out of memory (UXA/EXA)
I have identical set-up to the original reporter: Jaunty, fully updated, intel X4500MHD. I didn't used to see this problem, but since upgrading to xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.6.3 I started getting this. Typically for me I load a program the pre-allocates some memory - a wireshark capture is a good one, and suddenly ubuntu will page ~200MB to disk. Even though there is 3GB+ of free RAM, it just keeps adding to the swap each time, and never seems to swap back. Doesn't sound like there is any new version that fixes this yet, since still reported here as present in 2.7.99.1, but I'll try a new version when there is one that claims to fix this. -- [GM45] memory leak causes system to run out of memory (UXA/EXA) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/360319 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd --- please test new package
Hello all, many thanks to Albert Damen for his comprehensive analysis. The cited kernel patches are only for UXA and don't backport well, so we won't backport them to Jaunty (at least not now). However, his aperture patch already got good feedback and seems to fix the problem in a much better way than the previous VirtualSize workaround which is currently sitting in -proposed. Can people who are affected by this and who run a standard configuration (i. e. NO UXA, NO KMS, NO 2.6.30 kernel, etc.) please enable this PPA and test the updated -intel driver there? https://launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/green Please report positive and negative feedback about this package here. (Please no further feedback about I also have this problem, or problems with UXA). Thank you! [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 384047] Re: on resume from suspend, user logged out
Well, I found the explanation for the drmDropMaster line here: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14235page=14 Basically it's just a warning, and should happen every time you switch VT. It should not give this warning with newer kernels (2.6.29 and newer - Jaunty has 2.6.28) Explanation here: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-intel/commit/?id=095a001f755201d3c19335b67a84c57b1d080a83 . I would have expected a backtrace in Xorg.0.log (like in the forum thread above) if you had a crash, but it's not there. ** Tags added: 965gm jaunty resume ** Summary changed: - on resume from suspend, user logged out + [i965] on resume from suspend, X restarts ** Summary changed: - [i965] on resume from suspend, X restarts + [i965] on resume from suspend, X restarts (UXA bug) ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel I was testing Uxa on my Macbook 4,1 Jaunty (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/UxaTesting) $ lspci -nn | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a02] (rev 03) Graphics quality: didn't notice much difference, possibly a bit sharper and snappier. On resume, I find myself faced with my usual login window. This is the same every time, whether I click System-Shutdown-Suspend, or just close my Macbook lid, which I've set to Suspend. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 345119] Re: [i965 X3100] X freezes randomly, only mouse pointer still functional
I have the exact same problem... x.org freezes randomly, keyboard not responding, mouse pointer is functional but mouse clicks have no effect. Some examples of the random freezes: few seconds after loging into gnome session; after a couple of minutes while using nautilus; most common freezes seem to appear when firefox is running (flash plug-in installed). I'm lucky if my computer uptime is around two hours. The freezes began when I installed Jaunty. I had no similar problems on Intrepid. According to this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/363900 this type of problem was fixed with the package xserver-xorg-video-intel - 2:2.7.99.1+git20090602.ec2fde7c-0ubuntu1 After installing that package I still experienced the same problem (I upgraded the whole system to Karmic). The attached file contains the dri_debug logs for both Jaunty and Karmic. If there is any more information that I can provide, please let me know. This bug is really irritating and I'm seriously thinking of downgrading back to Intrepid, but before I do that I would like to give you all the data that is necessary about this bug. ** Attachment added: dri_debug.tgz http://launchpadlibrarian.net/27580202/dri_debug.tgz -- [i965 X3100] X freezes randomly, only mouse pointer still functional https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/345119 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd --- please test new package
Quick question... does these freezes only happen when Compiz is enabled? I think I have this bug (because I've got a 965GM chipset and Compiz is disabled), but I've never had any freezes. Should I be re-enabling Compiz to see if this patch fixes the problem, or will it remove the Compiz blacklist automatically? On Sat, Jun 6, 2009 at 2:55 PM, Bernhard b.a.koe...@googlemail.com wrote: I tested with both compiz and metacity and with many audio and video streams simulanteously and it seems to me that this last archive green package has seriously improved my experience, especially in that there is no more audio and video stuttering. I never had freezes though, so I cannot say anything about that. -- [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/359392 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. Status in X.org xf86-video-intel: Confirmed Status in “compiz” source package in Ubuntu: In Progress Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” source package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in compiz in Ubuntu Jaunty: Fix Committed Status in xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu Jaunty: Confirmed Status in compiz in Ubuntu Karmic: In Progress Status in xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu Karmic: Fix Released Bug description: [Problem] Starting around 4/3, when mesa was upgraded from 7.3 to 7.4, several i965 users started noticing X freeze after several hours of use, triggered by application usage especially noticeable with (but not unique to) compiz enabled. [Impact] The freeze bug affects a subset of i965 based systems, most particularly those using compiz. Exact numbers cannot be determined, but may be as high as 25-50% based on rough estimates. The problem is severe: An unpredictable lockup of the system that requires a power cycle to recover from. For some users it comes on within minutes, while for others it comes after a few hours of use. [How Addressed in Development Version] For now, the patch being proposed for Jaunty has been uploaded to Karmic. Longer term, we plan to move from EXA to UXA once the latter is stable enough. It has been found that while UXA exhibits other kinds of freezes, we've not yet been able to reproduce this particular freeze there. [Patch for Jaunty] A low-risk workaround that has proven effective at eliminating freezes, or at least greatly reducing their frequency, is to increase the Virtual framebuffer size. Some users do this locally as a matter of course to gain dual-head support, so this setting has received extremely widespread testing already. The patch for Jaunty causes the Virtual size to be set to 2048x2048 if it is not otherwise specified. Users can still override this with their own settings, larger or smaller, as desired. A side effect of this patch is that it also mitigates bug 158415 to a degree, which will make projector usage somewhat easier for this hardware because it will enable X to recognize higher resolutions available from the external monitor than were available on initial boot. [Test Case] The best method found to reproduce the bug is: a. Enable compiz b. Set your desktop to a 6x1 workspace layout c. Run http://launchpadlibrarian.net/25683477/repro.sh d. System will freeze anywhere from 1-20 min typically e. Power-button shutdown is required to reset the system [Regression Potential] In general, Virtual has been widely and extensively tested, so we do not expect this patch to trigger regressions. The patch is coded to only take effect on i965 systems, so the scope of any regression that might conceivably be triggered will be limited to just that hardware. [Suspects] Omitting obviously trivial, unrelated changes, here are what changed in several suspect packages in the timeframe in question: * intel driver: 4/01: 118_drop_legacy3d.patch: Removed Legacy3D 4/03: 114_fix_xv_with_non_gem.patch: Dropped since it caused regression 4/06: 119_drm_bo_unreference_needs_null.patch: Fixes various nullptr derefs 4/08: 120_fix_vt_switch.patch: Fix nullptr deref in video playback * xserver: 4/08: 177_animated_cursor_change_master.patch: fixes animated cursors 4/06: 174_set_bg_pixmap_of_cow_to_none.patch: Sets bg pixmap of composite overlay window to None 3/30: 172_cwgetbackingpicture_nullptr_check.patch: fix race condition when minimzing/maximizing firefox with flash video playing. * mesa: 4/03: 7.4 released * Added MESA_GLX_FORCE_DIRECT env var for Xlib/software driver * GLSL version 1.20 is returnd by the GL_SHADING_LANGUAGE_VERSION query * glGetActiveUniform() returned wrong size for some array types * Fixed some error checking in glUniform() * Fixed a potential glTexImage('proxy target') segfault * Fixed bad reference counting for 1D/2D texture arrays * Fixed VBO + glPush/PopClientAttrib() bug #19835 * Assorted i965 driver bug fixes * Fixed a

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd
The bug has happened both ways, usually faster if one has Compiz. If you enable the proposed repo, you'll upgrade to a Compiz that doesn't have the X3100 on the blacklist. Be careful, though, as a new kernel somehow didn't get into proposed and you'll only be able to do a partial upgrade Martin, in what capacity I've been able to test it (I'm addicted Xorg- edgers, but I tested a manual compile of it), the patch works beautifully. -- [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/359392 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: kdebase-plasma I am currently running KDE 4.2.4 from (http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu- ppa/ppa/ubuntu) on Inspiron 1520 (Nvidia 8400 M GS with latest driver 180.60) and I see frequent freezes/lockups when I close certain Windows like firefox with few tabs, Emacs or Konsole. Mouse still keeps working, but KDE doesn't respond to any keyboard event except switching to console via Alt-Ctrl-F1..F6. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 378671] Re: mouse cursor disappears when stationary
Same problem. Intel 945. A few details: it happens when cursor is over a regular area like a browser window or a gnome panel, but doesn't happen when it is over a drop-down menu, be it gnome main menu or an application-specific one. When over a menu item, it doesn't disappear, but the pop-up text, if any, blinks every 2 sec or so (probably the same interval is for disappearing); the cursor itself doesn't seem to blink. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 384316] [NEW] radeon driver now depends on ati to be autoloaded, previously it did not
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati Prior to 1:6.12.2-2ubuntu1, I had only xserver-xorg-video-radeon installed, *without* xserver-xorg-video-ati. This used to work fine. As of that version, X now fails to load the driver unless the -ati wrapper is present. This is probably related to pci ids no longer being shipped in the -radeon package. Either X should learn the necessary pci ids to load radeon directly, or the radeon package should depend on ati if that's necessary for it to ever be properly autoloaded. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 384333] [NEW] Xorg infinite loop, backtrace thru synaptics driver
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Since the upgrade from Intrepid to Jaunty, X will hang randomly. It has happened in Firefox (while scrolling a webpage with the touchpad), OpenOffice (moving mouse and clicking an icon), and Eclipse several times while interacting with UI elements using the mouse pointer. When X hangs, the mouse moves but no UI elements respond. I am not able to switch virtual terminals, and CTRL-ALT-BKSP and CTRL-ALT-DEL do not respond, but CTRL-ALT-PRTSC-S-U-B is able to restart the machine. On the most recent hang, I found that I was able to SSH into the machine. The Xorg.log indicated a likely infinite loop, with the following backtrace: [mi] EQ overflowing. I honestly can't say whether all these crashes happened while using the *touchpad* as opposed to a USB mouse, but the most recent one was the touchpad, and it's entirely possible that all the hangs I've experienced were during touchpad use. The patch is coded to only take effect on i965 systems, so the scope of any

I haven't had this kind of freeze in several hours now. I have, however, experienced another freeze where the screen just froze and nothing reacted anymore (no mouse movement, nothing). I believe this to be a different bug and will report it separately as soon as I get around to it. For now, this should count as positive feedback for the patch in the green repository.
