I have just installed Ubuntu 9.04 with the latest updates and this is still
broken on my system with NVidia proprietary driver.
I have two cards

(rev b2)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV11DDR [GeForce2 MX200]

and after I have installed the restricted driver, X doesnt start until I
go to the xorg.conf and add BusID line to the device section.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 360319] Re: [GM45] memory leak causes system to run out of memory (UXA/EXA)

2009-06-06 Thread Aaron Roydhouse
I have identical set-up to the original reporter: Jaunty, fully updated,
intel X4500MHD. I didn't used to see this problem, but since upgrading
to xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.6.3 I started getting this. Typically for
me I load a program the pre-allocates some memory - a wireshark capture
is a good one, and suddenly ubuntu will page ~200MB to disk. Even though
there is 3GB+ of free RAM, it just keeps adding to the swap each time,
and never seems to swap back.

Doesn't sound like there is any new version that fixes this yet, since
still reported here as present in 2.7.99.1, but I'll try a new version
when there is one that claims to fix this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 384248] [NEW] Mouse pointer corrupt on one head after resume (20% of time)

2009-06-06 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

(X server 2.7.1-1ubuntu1 in Karmic, seen through Jaunty, never on Intrepid
(kernel 2.6.30-6-generic #7-Ubuntu )

About 20% of the time when I return from hibernate the mouse cursor on the 2nd
head (external VGA) is corrupt, restarting X fixes it; rehibernating and
unhibernating sometime fixes it. The pointer on the laptop LCD is fine.
The pointer stays corrupt even as I move in and out of windows that change the
shape.

The corruption is of the form of a block of random mush covering a
constant width area (64 pixels?) and constant height (16 pixels??) with
the bottom of the mouse pointer still rendered correctly.

Hardware is Tosh Equium A100-306 laptop with i945GM:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS,
943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

(I previously had this bug tacked onto one about general X server
crahsiness and thought it best to separate it).

It does sound similar to #67196 which is closed and was related to the
old i810 driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 384047] Re: on resume from suspend, user logged out

2009-06-06 Thread Richard Shore
Hi, thanks Geir.

Updated my /etc/apt/sources.list and upgraded xserver-xorg-video-intel,
as you suggested.

Sadly, with the newest version of the driver, the problem remains
exactly as before.

I've attached i_r_d-before.txt, i_r_d-after.txt, and also
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old from right after the first replication of this
problem on upgrading the driver.

Cheers! Rich

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383973] Re: system frozen after a period of inactivity

2009-06-06 Thread Nicolò Chieffo
This bug today presented even with -7 kernel, so the problem should be
in the intel driver.

Immediately after the screen blanks I can recover it moving the mouse.
I left the pc on for 30 minutes. Now it's not possible to recover it.

** Also affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu)

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd --- please test new package

2009-06-06 Thread Martin Pitt
Hello all,

many thanks to Albert Damen for his comprehensive analysis. The cited
kernel patches are only for UXA and don't backport well, so we won't
backport them to Jaunty (at least not now). However, his aperture
patch already got good feedback and seems to fix the problem in a much
better way than the previous VirtualSize workaround which is currently
sitting in -proposed.

Can people who are affected by this and who run a standard
configuration (i. e. NO UXA, NO KMS, NO 2.6.30 kernel, etc.) please
enable this PPA and test the updated -intel driver there?

  https://launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/green

Please report positive and negative feedback about this package here.
(Please no further feedback about I also have this problem, or
problems with UXA).

Thank you!

Martin

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 384047] Re: on resume from suspend, user logged out

2009-06-06 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Well, I found the explanation for the drmDropMaster line here:
http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14235page=14
Basically it's just a warning, and should happen every time you switch VT. It
should not give this warning with newer kernels (2.6.29 and newer - Jaunty has
2.6.28) Explanation here:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-intel/commit/?id=095a001f755201d3c19335b67a84c57b1d080a83
 .

I would have expected a backtrace in Xorg.0.log (like in the forum
thread above) if you had a crash, but it's not there.

Graphics quality: didn't notice much difference, possibly a bit sharper

  Problem replicable every time:
On resume from Suspend, I find I've been logged out of my user session.

  i.e.
I log in, check I'm using Uxa not Exa ($ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log|grep -i
uxa), and then Suspend.
On resume, I find myself faced with my usual login window.

This is the same every time, whether I click System-Shutdown-Suspend, or
just close my Macbook lid, which I've set to Suspend.

This problem only happens when using Uxa, never with Exa.

I have the exact same problem... x.org freezes randomly, keyboard not
responding, mouse pointer is functional but mouse clicks have no effect.
Some examples of the random freezes: few seconds after loging into gnome
session; after a couple of minutes while using nautilus; most common freezes
seem to appear when firefox is running (flash plug-in installed). I'm lucky if
my computer uptime is around two hours.

The freezes began when I installed Jaunty. I had no similar problems on
Intrepid.

According to this bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/363900
this type of problem was fixed with the package xserver-xorg-video-intel -
2:2.7.99.1+git20090602.ec2fde7c-0ubuntu1

After installing that package I still experienced the same problem (I
upgraded the whole system to Karmic).

I have followed the instructions on
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-freeze-test and
collected all the information during the freezes both on Jaunty and
Karmic. The attached file contains the dri_debug logs for both Jaunty
and Karmic.

If there is any more information that I can provide, please let me know.
This bug is really irritating and I'm seriously thinking of downgrading
back to Intrepid, but before I do that I would like to give you all the
data that is necessary about this bug.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd --- please test new package

2009-06-06 Thread Thomas Foss
Quick question... does these freezes only happen when Compiz is enabled? I
think I have this bug (because I've got a 965GM chipset and Compiz is
disabled), but I've never had any freezes. Should I be re-enabling Compiz to
see if this patch fixes the problem, or will it remove the Compiz blacklist
automatically?

I cannot say anything about that.

 Bug description:
 [Problem]
Starting around 4/3, when mesa was upgraded from 7.3 to 7.4, several i965
users started noticing X freeze after several hours of use, triggered by
application usage especially noticeable with (but not unique to) compiz
 enabled.

 [Impact]
The freeze bug affects a subset of i965 based systems, most particularly
those using compiz. Exact numbers cannot be determined, but may be as high
as 25-50% based on rough estimates.

The problem is severe: An unpredictable lockup of the system that requires
a power cycle to recover from. For some users it comes on within minutes,
while for others it comes after a few hours of use.

 [How Addressed in Development Version]
For now, the patch being proposed for Jaunty has been uploaded to Karmic.

Longer term, we plan to move from EXA to UXA once the latter is stable
enough. It has been found that while UXA exhibits other kinds of freezes,
we've not yet been able to reproduce this particular freeze there.

 [Patch for Jaunty]
A low-risk workaround that has proven effective at eliminating freezes, or
at least greatly reducing their frequency, is to increase the Virtual
framebuffer size. Some users do this locally as a matter of course to gain
dual-head support, so this setting has received extremely widespread testing
 already.

The patch for Jaunty causes the Virtual size to be set to 2048x2048 if it
is not otherwise specified. Users can still override this with their own
settings, larger or smaller, as desired.

A side effect of this patch is that it also mitigates bug 158415 to a
degree, which will make projector usage somewhat easier for this hardware
because it will enable X to recognize higher resolutions available from the
external monitor than were available on initial boot.

 [Test Case]
The best method found to reproduce the bug is:
  a. Enable compiz
  b. Set your desktop to a 6x1 workspace layout
  c. Run http://launchpadlibrarian.net/25683477/repro.sh
  d. System will freeze anywhere from 1-20 min typically
  e. Power-button shutdown is required to reset the system

 [Regression Potential]
In general, Virtual has been widely and extensively tested, so we do not
expect this patch to trigger regressions.

The patch is coded to only take effect on i965 systems, so the scope of any
regression that might conceivably be triggered will be limited to just that
 hardware.

 [Suspects]
Omitting obviously trivial, unrelated changes, here are what changed in
several suspect packages in the timeframe in question:

 * intel driver:
  4/01: 118_drop_legacy3d.patch: Removed Legacy3D
4/03: 114_fix_xv_with_non_gem.patch: Dropped since it caused regression

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd

2009-06-06 Thread zwaldowski
The bug has happened both ways, usually faster if one has Compiz. If
you enable the proposed repo, you'll upgrade to a Compiz that doesn't
have the X3100 on the blacklist. Be careful, though, as a new kernel
somehow didn't get into proposed and you'll only be able to do a partial
upgrade

Martin, in what capacity I've been able to test it (I'm addicted Xorg-
edgers, but I tested a manual compile of it), the patch works
beautifully.

Please report positive and negative feedback about this package

The package in the above repository is considered older than the
current version from proposed (which doesn't incorporate Albert

package for installation. It would be nice if somebody would somehow
bump the version or something to make the package from the above

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 384277] [NEW] KDE desktop locks up when closing certain windows

2009-06-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: kdebase-plasma

I am currently running KDE 4.2.4 from (http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-
ppa/ppa/ubuntu) on Inspiron 1520 (Nvidia 8400 M GS with latest driver
180.60) and I see frequent freezes/lockups when I close certain Windows
like firefox with few tabs, Emacs or Konsole.

Mouse still keeps working, but KDE doesn't respond to any keyboard event
except switching to console via Alt-Ctrl-F1..F6. After temporary pause
of few seconds everything starts working again as usual (without
restarting or anything of the sort).

I have faced this issue from KDE 4.1.3 and all versions of NVIDIA
drivers. The problem doesn't occur when running Gnome. I had same
problem with vanilla install of KDE 4.2.2 from stock Kubuntu as well.

I have tried filing bug reports with KDE people:

think I have this bug (because I've got a 965GM chipset and Compiz is
disabled), but I've never had any freezes. Should I be re-enabling Compiz to
see if this patch fixes the problem, or will it remove the Compiz blacklist
 automatically?

It mostly occurs with compiz. You might also be able to reproduce it
with other 3D applications, though.

Please note that the compiz package in jaunty-proposed removed the
blacklisting of 965, so you should test both together.

But when x has to start, screen goes black. Can get to command line with
Ctrl-Alt-F4 (though screen font unusually large).

Xorg.0.log attached, this is for the livecd. I have also the log file for the
installation, it seems the xorg under the livecd sees Chrome but under the
 installation it does not.

FWIW, have also got output of lshw; it reports quite a lot of VGA detail (but
of course either the info is false or it is not getting to xorg or xorg is
 not treating it correctly).

 * intel driver:
  4/01: 118_drop_legacy3d.patch: Removed Legacy3D
4/03: 114_fix_xv_with_non_gem.patch: Dropped since it caused regression
  4/06: 119_drm_bo_unreference_needs_null.patch: Fixes various nullptr
 derefs
4/08: 120_fix_vt_switch.patch: Fix nullptr deref in video playback

 * xserver:
  4/08: 177_animated_cursor_change_master.patch: fixes animated cursors
4/06: 174_set_bg_pixmap_of_cow_to_none.patch: Sets bg pixmap of
 composite overlay window to None
  3/30: 172_cwgetbackingpicture_nullptr_check.patch: fix race condition
when minimzing/maximizing firefox with flash video playing.

 * mesa:
  4/03: 7.4 released
* Added MESA_GLX_FORCE_DIRECT env var for Xlib/software driver
* GLSL version 1.20 is returnd by the GL_SHADING_LANGUAGE_VERSION query
* glGetActiveUniform() returned wrong size for some array types
* Fixed some error checking in glUniform()
* Fixed a potential glTexImage('proxy target') segfault
* Fixed bad reference counting for 1D/2D texture arrays
* Fixed VBO + glPush/PopClientAttrib() bug #19835
   * Assorted i965 driver bug fixes

(The Metacity screenshot is what the window borders used to look like all
the time, and still look like in Metacity.)

I also can't seem to grab the cube with the middle mouse button anymore...
Somehow I remember being able to rotate the cube with Ctrl+Alt+Button1 or
also with the middle mouse button... but I only see one initiate shortcut
setting, so I don't know how to get it back to doing both. Hmm.

Overall though I think these are small problems for which I just need to
find the right settings. I haven't seen any problems with the graphics so
far. Are there any specific tests I should do to try to provoke it?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 378671] Re: mouse cursor disappears when stationary

2009-06-06 Thread Sergey Chistovich
Same problem. Intel 945.

A few details: it happens when cursor is over a regular area like a
browser window or a gnome panel, but doesn't happen when it is over a
drop-down menu, be it gnome main menu or an application-specific one.
When over a menu item, it doesn't disappear, but the pop-up text, if
any, blinks every 2 sec or so (probably the same interval is for
disappearing); the cursor itself doesn't seem to blink.

If needed, I can send xorg.conf or whatever.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 384316] [NEW] radeon driver now depends on ati to be autoloaded, previously it did not

2009-06-06 Thread Max Bowsher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Prior to 1:6.12.2-2ubuntu1, I had only xserver-xorg-video-radeon
installed, *without* xserver-xorg-video-ati. This used to work fine. As
of that version, X now fails to load the driver unless the -ati wrapper
is present. This is probably related to pci ids no longer being shipped
in the -radeon package. Either X should learn the necessary pci ids to
load radeon directly, or the radeon package should depend on ati if
that's necessary for it to ever be properly autoloaded.

2009-06-06 Thread Pihhan
Public bug reported:

I downloaded testxv.c from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_video_extension and compiled it with
suggested command line. It does compile without problem. Problem is when
i run that, program will not work well on my system. It worked first
time i tried. Second time it did break X, so graphics failed to work and
only gray screen was there. Switching to text console did not work,
ctlr+alt+backspace also. I have Jaunty upgraded from hardy, on Sony Vaio
VGN-FZ210C laptop. It reported hardware failure to dmesg, but i dont
have saved logs. Network access via ssh worked, but sudo reboot did not
finish.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 365776] Re: [i965] graphical glitches with Blender/OpenGL unless DRI disabled

2009-06-06 Thread Trevor Walker
I have found a temporary solution, at least for me. The problem, I
think, is that blender completely disregards gnome-panel when it
redraws. If all taskbars are hidden, fullscreen blender (blender -W)
works perfectly. However, windowed blender (blender -w) still doesn't
work. At least blender is useable again!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 384333] [NEW] Xorg infinite loop, backtrace thru synaptics driver

2009-06-06 Thread Derek Monner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Since the upgrade from Intrepid to Jaunty, X will hang randomly. It has
happened in Firefox (while scrolling a webpage with the touchpad),
OpenOffice (moving mouse and clicking an icon), and Eclipse several
times while interacting with UI elements using the mouse pointer.

When X hangs, the mouse moves but no UI elements respond. I am not able
to switch virtual terminals, and CTRL-ALT-BKSP and CTRL-ALT-DEL do not
respond, but CTRL-ALT-PRTSC-S-U-B is able to restart the machine. On the
most recent hang, I found that I was able to SSH into the machine. The
Xorg.log indicated a likely infinite loop, with the following backtrace:

[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.

[...repeats a few dozen times...]
[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.
[mi] mieqEnqueue: more than six valuator events; dropping.
[...these two repeat in alternation until the machine is rebooted...]

I suspect the synaptics driver, since each hang involves interacting
with UI elements using the mouse, immediately before the crash. I
honestly can't say whether all these crashes happened while using the
*touchpad* as opposed to a USB mouse, but the most recent one was the
touchpad, and it's entirely possible that all the hangs I've experienced
were during touchpad use.

Lots of information should be attached via the ubuntu-bug tool -- please
let me know if there's anything else I can add.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 384325] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in dixLookupPrivate()

2009-06-06 Thread Chris Coulson
This crash has happened twice in a few hours now. The second time was
with someone else logged in to the machine. My (inactive) session died
whilst they were using their own session.

So I tried adding it back by using:
 sudo -s
 echo base=0xb000 size=0x1000 type=write-combining /proc/mtrr

I have noticed a few things after adding that entry:
 - glxgears is now about twice as fast (I know its not a real benchmark ;)
 - 2D Performance does not seem affected however (just testing a bit with
 x11perf/gtkperf)
 - it fixes the corruption on the ttys (bug 312677)

I also noticed that this entry gets removed everytime xorg gets restarted.

But I'm not sure with all the recent changes in memory management if that
entry should still be there or not.

very annoying. I think it's more of a Compiz problem than a graphics problem

Somehow I remember being able to rotate the cube with Ctrl+Alt+Button1 or

Overall though I think these are small problems for which I just need to
find the right settings. I haven't seen any problems with the graphics so
far. Are there any specific tests I should do to try to provoke it?

It mostly occurs with compiz. You might also be able to reproduce it
 with other 3D applications, though.

Please note that the compiz package in jaunty-proposed removed the
blacklisting of 965, so you should test both together.

The problem is severe: An unpredictable lockup of the system that
requires a power cycle to recover from. For some users it comes on within
minutes, while for others it comes after a few hours of use.

A low-risk workaround that has proven effective at eliminating freezes,
or at least greatly reducing their frequency, is to increase the Virtual
framebuffer size.

The patch is coded to only take effect on i965 systems, so the scope of
 any

One thing to notice is that its affected performance considerably
things are a lot slower and kde 4.2 is pretty mch useless without UXA

2009-06-06 Thread reini
I haven't had this kind of freeze in several hours now. I have,
however, experienced another freeze where the screen just froze and
nothing reacted anymore (no mouse movement, nothing).

I believe this to be a different bug and will report it separately as
soon as I get around to it.

For now, this should count as positive feedback for the patch in the
green repository.

 Hello all,

many thanks to Albert Damen for his comprehensive analysis. The
cited kernel patches are only for UXA and don't backport well, so
we won't backport them to Jaunty (at least not now). However, his
aperture patch already got good feedback and seems to fix the
problem in a much better way than the previous VirtualSize
workaround which is currently sitting in -proposed.

Can people who are affected by this and who run a standard
configuration (i. e. NO UXA, NO KMS, NO 2.6.30 kernel, etc.)
please enable this PPA and test the updated -intel driver there?

   https://launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/green

Please report positive and negative feedback about this package
here. (Please no further feedback about I also have this
 problem, or problems with UXA).
