[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 390118] [NEW] black screen after booting

2009-06-20 Thread mumismo
Public bug reported:

Having installed the xorg-driver-fglrx package but not using the fglrx driver
makes the X server to die
X will appear as X and the screen will be filled with garbage (no
terminal, no ctrl+alt+sup, just random pixels)
The solution as found here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1148792 is
to uninstall the packages as symbols crash in libdri.
It took me quite a some time to find this out and try several solutions to
related problems.

So I think this is a bug as a typical user will just hear about fglrx
improves framerate, install it and see his Linux not booting anymore and
no idea why.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 58171] Re: Connection to ICE-unix/.. socket times out so programs take minutes to start

2009-06-20 Thread PoltoS/
The same problem for me since mai 2009.

For me it seems to be related with wifi manipulations: disconnect from
AP, reconnect to AP, ...

If the problem occurs, all programs trying to read or write from PF_FILE socket
hangs up.
gnome-terminal hangs up on reading /tmp/.ICE-unix/x
sudo (run in working gnome-terminal) and login (while trying to login on tty1)
hags on writing to /dev/log (also PF_FILE socket)

i don't think this is related to gnome-session or xorg. i don't know the
launching mechanism, but once the problem triggered it is related to
read/write of file sockets.

other programs not using PF_FILE sockets just works.
nothing helps except reboot :(

Ubuntu 9.04 (fully updated version by version since 6.10 or 7.04)

any suggestions? very annoying problem forcing me to reboot 5 time a
day.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 390038] [NEW] Nvidia driver messes up login screen

2009-06-20 Thread Bratmon
Public bug reported:

Earlier, I installed a new nvidia driver (recommended by the hardware
drivers manager). It works perfectly except for one problem. When I
get to the login screen, my moniter changes to 640x480, but the whole

corner of the screen, just enough for me to login in. Here is my

I'm currently running Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty on a Dell Inspiron 6000 with

On an earlier attempt, I did attempt to install xorg-driver-fglrx with
its related dependencies, and then X would hang before it got to the
login screen with a corrupted video display, even without any visual
effects enabled, so I reverted to the original Radeon package with the
r300_dri.so Xorg module.

Let me know if there's anything else I can provide that might be useful.
This is otherwise a fresh load of Ubuntu as of yesterday, with all the
automatic updates installed that were listed as available as the default
configuration.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 98783] Re: MASTER: memory leak

2009-06-20 Thread Aaditya
Xorg's memory consumption goes up each time the tty is switched to or
from the one running the X server, and each time the box is suspended &
resumed. The increase at each step depends on the 'pixmem' size.

In the following, I switched between tty1 (CLI) and tty7 (X) and took a reading
each time I returned to tty7. Only `firefox` and `gnome-terminal` windows were
open.

$ top -bn1 |grep Xorg
 2816 root 20 0 556m 63m 17m S2 1.6 0:06.87 Xorg

$ top -bn1 |grep Xorg
 2816 root 20 0 606m 79m 20m S0 2.1 0:08.54 Xorg

$ top -bn1 |grep Xorg
 2816 root 20 0 653m 92m 23m S2 2.4 0:10.30 Xorg

$ top -bn1 |grep Xorg
 2816 root 20 0 701m 106m 25m S0 2.7 0:12.19 Xorg

$ top -bn1 |grep Xorg

 2816 root 20 0 845m 144m 32m S0 3.7 0:17.52 Xorg

$ top -bn1 |grep Xorg
 2816 root 20 0 893m 157m 35m S0 4.1 0:20.08 Xorg

$ top -bn1 |grep Xorg
 2816 root 20 0 960m 210m 44m S2 5.4 1:01.58 Xorg

$ top -bn1 |grep Xorg
 2816 root 20 0 1007m 229m 46m R 70 5.9 1:08.70 Xorg

 2816 root 20 0 1101m 257m 51m R 71 6.6 1:23.54 Xorg

In the following, there was one suspend & resume between any two
consecutive commands. Again, only `firefox` and `gnome-terminal` windows
were open.

$ top -bn1 |grep Xorg
23595 root 20 0 526m 103m 24m S4 2.7 3:59.37 Xorg

$ top -bn1 |grep Xorg
23595 root 20 0 587m 123m 24m S6 3.2 4:03.11 Xorg

$ top -bn1 |grep Xorg
23595 root 20 0 723m 160m 26m S4 4.1 4:23.90 Xorg

`xrestop`'s output showed no significant change, but the increases in Xorg's
resident memory in each step approximately equal to the total memory according
to `xrestop`:
Pixmaps: 17925K total, Other: 122K total, All: 18047K total

The box is running Jaunty, amd64; all packages are up to date.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 376092] Re: [i945] Running Out of Memory with composited managers (UXA bug)

2009-06-20 Thread Robert Hooker
Yes the fixes are in mesa 7.5 branch

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/commit/?h=mesa_7_5_branch&id=d027e8feff7d38cccadc6aaccc0454b21ce4dca0

I dont see the glXDestroyGLXPixmap fix in mesa master (7.6) yet though
so the 7.6 on edgers for karmic is still affected until the next 7.5
branch merge.

I'm running 9.04/Jaunty on a Via VB8001 main board

The openchrome X11 driver works but XV (XVideo) out (e.g. from vlc,

Any suggestitions?

2009-06-20 Thread Jorge G
I can confirm the same issue of Obed Arbel, when I close the lid i get
the freezes, I don't get the freeze by doing hard work on the laptop or
using compiz, I am using the lastest intel driver available. I will try
to ssh to the machine next time to get some information.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 389968] [NEW] blank screen with flickering cursor upon resume from suspend in GM965

2009-06-20 Thread Jeffrey Baker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Karmic Alpha 2, x86_64, 2.6.30-9-generic, ThinkPad X61 Tablet with Intel
965GM graphics. Intermittently the screen is blank on resume from
suspend. The password dialog cannot be seen. The cursor flickers on if
the mouse is moved, or if a key is struck. I can switch to another vt
with ctrl+alt+function and restart the X server to fix it. There are no
useful entries in Xorg.0.log or in dmesg.

Conceivably this bug could be in compiz, xscreensaver, or even the
kernel. Lodging it against the driver since it seems most likely.

Driver version 2:2.7.99.1+git20090602.ec2fde7c-0ubuntu2
Kernel version 2.6.30-9.10

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 376092] Re: [i945] Running Out of Memory with composited managers (UXA bug)

2009-06-20 Thread Johannes Mockenhaupt
I've checked again, yes I believe it's in the master branch of mesa:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/commit/?id=d027e8feff7d38cccadc6aaccc0454b21ce4dca0
(The comment of the first bug said the patch is in review, while the comment on
the second bug specifically mentions it has been commited).

The ChangeLog file (copy of 'git log') of "mesa
7.5.0~git20090619+mesa-7-5-branch.abfd56c2-0ubuntu0sarvatt" (via apt-get
source mesa) also mentions this patch.
I've checked the actual source to be sure and the patch is in there too.

The problem specifically on my system was that with 500MB out 2GB of RAM
filled, the swap space started growing until it was filled
completely(2.5GB), apart from that I run the same versions and such as
the original bug reporter. With the patch this issue doesn't appear
anymore. (I forget to mention the details of the memory problem I see
before and I do here to ensure I'm not talking about a different issue).

Hope this is helpful.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd

2009-06-20 Thread Oded Arbel
I have a regression in Karmic: after living with the "green" drivers for
a couple of week and everything was fine, I upgraded to Karmic on
Thursday and ever since I had multiple freezes. I don't know if this is
related to this bug, but I'll assume that it is unless someone tell me
otherwise:

I got only one freeze while working, and it looks exactly the same as
this problem: the screen freezes but the mouse still responds and I can
ssh into the machine. But most of the freezes where while the laptop was
on power with the lid closed, which means the screen is actually off and
when I open it several hours later nothing responds - the computer is
still on but the screen is disabled and nothing I do brings it back. I
haven't yet tried to ssh into the laptop when its like that as usually I
need to do something right away and I have to power cycle it.

Anyway, going through syslog I found this which might be related:

There are several copies of these over a period of about 20 minutes,
each almost exactly 2 minutes after another (as can probably be deduced
from the error message) before it falls silent again - I can't tell for
sure whether its related to the freeze, except that these messages have
appeared after I closed the computer when it was working and before I
opened it again when it was not.

Going back through the logs, I found another set of events like this at
another time that I remember the computer freezes, but it was yesterday
and I may be mistaken about this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 163047] Re: firefox: mouse pointer disappears while page is loading

2009-06-20 Thread Mike.lifeguard
This appears to be a bug in the way compiz handles keeping the size of
animated cursors constant with enhanced zoom. It shrinks your real
cursor down to nothing and draws a new cursor... when you zoom back out,
it fails to resize the original cursor, but stops drawing the new one
(since it's not needed unless you're zoomed). Thus after zooming out
your cursor disappears.

See for example

The workaround is not really a workaround since force you to configure

Basically is a crippling thing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 346028] Re: [ATI driver specific] Ubuntu Jaunty hangs after usplash with fglrx 8.600 or 8.6002

2009-06-20 Thread David Weiss
I just updated to the latest release of jaunty and the video went out
again. I tried the fix that was mentioned above (removing fglrx) but
that did not fix the problem this time. Any ideas?

is good, but no trace of inclusion. Please confirm so that we can give
that information upstream.

Anyway, I'm still seeing this bug, which is not the very same as the one
that has been fixed. Using mesa from xorg-edgers, 2009-06-18.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 389890] [NEW] Radeon r100 doesn't use software vertex program support

2009-06-20 Thread Venkatesh Srinivas
Public bug reported:

Hi,

The Radeon r100 doesn't have vertex program support in hardware, but
could use Mesa's software support for that, like the Intel 865 (for
example) does, for GL_ARB_vertex_program.

The attached patch will enable support for GL_ARB_vertex_program on the
r100, using the sw support. (Adding support for GL_NV_vertex_program
would be trivial as well, if needed). Tested on an rv200 with some
simple vertex program example code.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 153031] [NEW] system crash, whole system freezes

2009-06-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have no idea what causes this, but randomly for no reason i can see
(but i assume there has to be a reason for it) my system just freezes,
and does not respond to anything, i can't use the mouse or keyboard, i
can't switch to a virtual terminal to try and cleanly shutdown, i just
have to press the button to cold reboot.

I have tried doing the ubuntu device database thing to try and send a
report to see if it's a hardware issue but for some strange reason I
can't get past the sound detection, i CAN'T hear the test sound, but can
hear pidgin beeping at me in the background and to prove it's not me
using OSS instead of alsa, i can also hear banshee playing my music at
the same time.

If there is anyway i can collect the information to help with this bug i
will, but it's a bit of a show-stopper for me.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 389836] [NEW] after update to xkb-data_1.6-1 modifier keys (left and right ALT) dont work in gtk apps anymore

after updating xkb-data (1.5-2ubuntu11) to 1.6-1ubuntu1 in Kubuntu Karmic and
restarting the xserver, the left and right ALT keys do not work anymore in
Firefox, Thunderbird and synaptic (gtk2 apps?).
In all kde apps I tested as well as in konsole, these keys work fine.

2009-06-20 Thread Pihhan
I tested it a little. It worked fine for some time, but problem occured
when i moved it before terminal window, then clicked on terminal to make
it hidden. That worked well, it did speed up. Then i tried to move
terminal window to partially uncover program window. Right then screen
got gray and no more i could do anything using keyboard or mouse. After
soft reboot, only on running testxv again it blanks screen right after
start, no moving or hiding window is needed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 386740] Re: [K8M800] mouse pointer corruptly displayed at the bottom of the X screen

2009-06-20 Thread Márton Németh
I corrected the debug patch to handle values bigger than 0x7FFF
correctly.

I did some investigation with different pos and offset settings. I could
find out that:

when writing to the pos and the offset registers there are the following fields:
 - the vertical position (y) is a 11bit wide register at bits pos[10:0]
 - the horizontal position (x) is a 12bit wide register at bits pos[27:16]
 - the vertical offset (y) is a 7bit wide register at bits offset[6:0]
 - the horizontal offset (y) is also a 7bit wide register at bits offset[22:16]

All other bits are ignored when writing and interpreted as if they were
set to 0 by hardware.
