[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 371296] Re: [R420] system freezes when starting openoffice writer

2009-07-04 Thread Martin Olsson
I have no really good solution for this but let me at least give you
some more information, maybe you can use that to debug the issue
further.

I think, when compiz is running all windows are rendered as 3D textures.
In additional, I think compiz also flips itself into INDIRECT rendering
mode (which means 3D accel is used but all drawing commands are sent
using AIGLX from the app to the X server and then the X server is the
process that calls the kernel 3D API). Compiz needs the openGL
texture_from_pixmap to be available.

In general, when DIRECT rendering is used (you can tell by running
glxinfo and grepping the out for direct), then you can force a 3D
app to use software rendering by making sure that the
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 environment variable is set for that process.
For example:

LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 glxgears

...will usually give you much lower FPS etc.

You can also control whether DIRECT/INDIRECT rendering should be used
with the env var:

LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 ./some_app

...however note that if you do this, then the 3D rendering will be done
in the X server so if you want to combine that with SOFTWARE rendering
then that LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 needs to be set inside the X server
afaik.

Finally, there is also:

LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxgears

...which allows you to analyze 3D operations in detail.

---

I don't think these environment variables will help you much for
OpenOffice though. Basically OO should just work, I hope we can get the
bug fixed instead.

Oh and one more thing. The driver option NoAccel is like a sledge
hammer that turns of _everything_. You might be able to keep some of the
3D accelerated operations and still don't get crashes. Understand which
part of the 3D acceleration that is causing the bug might prove useful
in narrowing down the bug location.

To test with partial 3D accel enabled for the radeon driver, see the
manual page man radeon. I would in particular recommend that you try
using the radeon driver without noaccel but _with_ exactly one of these
options at a time:

Option EXANoComposite
Option EXANoDownloadFromScreen
Option EXANoUploadToScreen

If you can repro the bug with DownloadFromScreen then we know that the
bug is likely to be hiding in that part of the radeon driver. Also
trying different, more recent versions of the driver is useful. For
example, if you boot the karmic alpha live CD and the bug is not
present, then it's likely that it got fixed somewhere between these
versions and then we might be able to search the source diff between
these versions for relevant clues.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 395460] [NEW] [Karmic] upgrading to gdm 2.6.1-0ubuntu2: double login, wrong screen resolution and unable to console

2009-07-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gdm

Yesterday I did upgrade from gdm 2.20.10-0ubuntu5 to gdm 2.26.1-0ubuntu2
on my HP2133 netbook.

Ubuntu 9.10
Kernel: 2.6.31-1-generic
GNOME: 2.27.3

After rebooting erratic behavior is observed:

1) login is asked in correct resolution (1024x600). I'm able to switch
to console with CTRL+ALT+F2.

From here I've found 2 possible scenarios:

A) after login correctly I'm redirected to gnome desktop with correct
resolution, and an error Metacity window is shown: These windows do not
support save current setup and will have to be restarted manually next
time you log in, referring to Class: Login Window, Window: Gdm-simple-
greeter. Still in the correct resolution 1024x600. I'm able to open
console with CTRL+ALT+F2 and operate normally until something breaks the
resolutions (for example running package manager)

B) after login correctly it switches screen mode to a lower resolution,
non supported (800x600) but partially visible and ask to login again.
gdm-simple-greeter error window appears again. From here I'm not able
to open a console using CTRL+ALT+Fn, the screen is crewed if I try.

I'll attach gdm logs on the next post. Is there a way to be back to
v2.20?

Thanks

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 315329] Re: ubuntu 8.10 detects display incorrectly for trident cyberblade

Still broken in Karmic.

I think this is upstream in Xorg, but I also think the Trident driver's
so old that upstream won't care unless someone submits them a good patch
- so if we don't want this broken in Ubuntu we'll have to fix it
ourselves first and submit the patch.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 395476] [NEW] nvidia sets HUE to -1000

2009-07-04 Thread BUGabundo
Public bug reported:

opening movies makes them look blueish due to the fact that nvidia settings
have HUE set to -1000
the user can manually fix that, by setting to zero, but the next time a movie

Everything worked fine in Ubuntu 8. Is there any chance to get it fixed?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 209911] Re: [Hardy] Mousing from one screen to another with tablet doesn't work any more

2009-07-04 Thread Kay
Would it be possible to make the --enable-quirk-tablet-rescale option
default again? It was a really great feature and I think the combination
of using a tablet and using dual head is not uncommon. If there are no
serious drawbacks this would be a quite easy way to improve the
usability of ubuntu.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 348332] Re: [RV250] Kubuntu: X Freezes with Radeon driver EXA/XAA Composite

I tried to work around the problem using a 2.6.29 kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.29.6/

At least using the specific version 2.6.29-02062906 the bug did NOT
disappear! Maybe they are less frequent but for me it is not solved
using that kernel.

Again I retrieved a backtrace via gdb. Looks quite similar to me.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 395460] Re: upgrading to gdm 2.6.1-0ubuntu2: double login, wrong screen resolution and unable to console

2009-07-04 Thread Eduard Sanchez Biete
Reverting the system to gdm 2.20.10-0ubuntu5 solves the problem, so may
be there's some problem with xorg on the last release, but definitively
there is something wrong on 2.26.1 that breaks, at least, my
installation.

I think this bug has to be assigned to gdm team.

Please ask for any test you want me to do.

Thanks.
