[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 403339] [NEW] problem with key repeat, extra key up events

2009-07-23 Thread warren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This is a well known bug discussed elsewhere, the problem is although
there are fixes available, none have been implemented. When a key is
held down, the system should wait a bit then generate a string of key
down events. The key up event should only be triggered when the key is
actually physically released. Currently, key presses produce a chain of
key down and key up events. Based on what I have read, the error is
introduced in a sloppy fix of another problem, where some legitimate key
up events were not occurring. This is only a serious problem for video
games, as other software does not require exacting standards for input.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 401045] Re: X crashes in FindGlyphByHash

2009-07-23 Thread Robert Hooker
You're using a mixture of jaunty and karmic packages here, if you're
going to use edgers change the sources to karmic. If you dont want to
use xorg-edgers any longer, then remove it completely from your sources,
and do a dpkg -l | grep sarvatt (or ~jaunty perhaps) and for every
package it lists add /karmic to the end of apt-get (sudo apt-get install
packagename/karmic packagename2/karmic for example)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 226272] Re: X video rendering intermittently fails if DRI or composite is enabled

2009-07-23 Thread etcetcetc
It's with a Samsung Q35 with VGA Output. Before I used Gentoo and I didn't have
any problems connecting the external monitor.
In the beginning it works, just after a while it starts flashing every few
minutes until finally the monitor becomes black. I can still switch to TTY1 to
reboot the system (restarting gdm doesn't help, afterwards the monitor still
stays black).
I'm using the external monitor only, switching of the laptop monitor.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 385723] Re: no backlight support for laptop (hal depreciation regression)

2009-07-23 Thread Martin Pitt
Adding xorg task, where the support should land according to David
Zeuten, Richard Hughes, and Kay Sievers (see
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/devkit-
devel/2009-July/000268.html). Once xbacklight covers these platforms,
g-p-m/KDE etc. should just work.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 385723] Re: no backlight support for laptop (hal depreciation regression)

2009-07-23 Thread Martin Pitt
The hal support for smartdimmer isn't going away anytime soon, so for
these platforms it's perhaps possible to add back the gnome-power-
manager support for it. That's why there is a gnome-power-manager task
here.

But I see no chance of devkit-power ever getting support for
smartdimmer. The entire idea of smartdimmer is a hack, device drivers
belong into kernel just as any other backlight interface the kernel
offers. If X.org merges the smartdimmer logic in its xbacklight support,
that's fine of course.

This shouldn't affect KDE at all at the moment. KDE 4 uses hal.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 319717] Re: [iGM45] Connecting external monitor causes system to lock up.

2009-07-23 Thread Andy Whitcroft
This has been fixed by the commit below which was included in
v2.6.31-rc1. This formed the base of the 2.6.31-1.13 ubuntu kernel.
Therefore I am marking this Fix Released for karmic.

  commit 35a7c64fbc77bab4ca8ae477e8ab278ccd679ce2
  Author: Zhang Rui rui.zh...@intel.com
  Date: Mon Jun 22 11:31:17 2009 +0800

ACPI: DMI to disable Vista compatibility on some Sony laptops

Linux claims Vista compatibility to the BIOS for a number of
reasons, but this brings hard lockup on some Sony laptops.

Disable Vista compatibility via DMI for these laptops unless
we can figure out what Vista is doing for this platform.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I upgraded from a FRESH install of Intrepid (8.0) to Jaunty (9.4 )
because the SCREEN would mess up as I moved my mouse and open and close
windows or programs ( firefox or Network Tools for example ) Thinking
this would go away.

It is much worse in Jaunty (9.4 ) compared to Intrepid (8.0).
I am NEW to Linux/Ubuntu ( using it on 2 laptops) the laptop with the problem

Well, the fix has been released. It consists of two patches, one for the
kernel, the other for the intel driver.
The problem is that the updates hasn't been released and God knows when they'll
release them
By now you have the choice to mess up your system using PPA kernel and driver
or use the fixmtrr patch.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 403530] [NEW] [karmic] Screen goes wild when doing simple 3D work

2009-07-23 Thread Alan Pope
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I've seen this with compiz on and off. With compiz _on_ I get wild
screen corruption when doing anything like flipping workspaces. With
compiz _off_ the same effect happens when running a simple python opengl
program. Will attach a video taken with my phone mp4 format, hope you
can play it because the ogv version made using ffmpeg2theora is vastly
accelerated frame rate, but does show the issue. Also will attach the
python code which causes the issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 403555] Re: menu display problem with intel driver

2009-07-23 Thread Christophe Dumez
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I'm using Ubuntu Karmic and since I'm using intel video driver v2.7.99
(and now v2.8.0 final) menus are not displayed properly on my window
  manager (Gnome).

I'll join a screenshot but basically:
- - I click on any menu in the system (gnome-taskbar, firefox, nautilus, ...)
+ - I click on any menu in the system (gnome-taskbar, synaptic, nautilus,
xchat...)
  - The grey branckground area of the menu is displayed but not the text (the
entries)
  - Waiting does not change anything
  - The only way to display the text if to move the cursor over the text and it
will appear one by one once the mouse is over the text.

Compiz is disabled and enabling it does not change anything.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 195982] Re: Shift key (and caps lock) stop working when using VMWare

2009-07-23 Thread Executive
I have two Ubuntu machines, one is running 8.04 LTS 64bit Server edition
and the other is 9.04 64bit Desktop edition.

I have installed VMware Server on the 8.04 server and I am accessing it
with Firefox via HTTPS.

I have the problem being discussed here and running setxkbmap restores
my keyboard mapping so that the Ctrl and Alt keys start working again
both in the Desktop and Server windows.

My guess is that this problem is related to VMware setting the keyboard
mapping on the host, to match the mapping on the virtual machine.

Problem could be, I have a 105 key USB keyboard on my workstation but
vmware has a 102/3 key virtual keyboard attached to the virtual machines
(I have 1 Redhat and 1 Windows 2003 server running as virtual machines)

This could also be related to how WMvare grabs the keyboard. I don't
know.. Fact is I don't think this is a OS problem at all. I belive the
OS is behaving as it should.-

2009-07-23 Thread Zaf
Hi, I'm sort of a noob when it comes to these sort of things (bugs and
fixes) but I'm having the white screen problem on my computer when
trying to log back on to my first session while compiz is activated. Now
apparently this bug is considered fixed so can someone explain to me
what I need to do ? I'm running Jaunty and here's my glxinfo if that
helps :

I would be very grateful for any help fixing this while being able to
still use compiz.

Same as my bug #327963, I guess.

You can either have a Macintosh Swiss keyboard model with a German
layout, or you can have a generic keyboard model with a special
Macintosh German layout. As the former uses the keys as labeled out on
the Mac, it's probably what you want. So simply change the layout from
de_mac to de, and you should be all right.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 403585] [NEW] Synaptic multi touch not working on acer aspire one d150

2009-07-23 Thread randomas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

I followed the wiki to enable shmconfig, and running synclient -m 100
the value under f (number of fingers) is always 1 weather I use one, two
or three fingers. Which is a pity because it's multitouch under xp with
even pinch gestures working. I'd be happy just to get 2 fingered middle
click working.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 400920] Re: [i945] Displacement between Blender render window and content.

2009-07-23 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
When you use the xorg-edgers PPA, it's usually best get all the packages
since there may be dependencies. For example, some fixes may need
updated libdrm2 and libdrm-intel1. Before, the way to test this with a
LiveCD was to use the script that automatically upgrades all packages
(see Testing with a live CD/media on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XorgOnTheEdge). However, now it is even easier
as there is a LiveCD image with the packages already installed:
http://sarvatt.com/downloads/xorg-edgers-0.16-i386.iso (it is currently
a little behind, being updated July 7th).

I also checked the blender website, and it seems they don't care too much about
intel graphics. On the downloads page
(http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/) it says:
Users with Intel on-board graphics: some graphics operations (menus or border
select) don't show due to driver bug.
Also, all developers have Nvidia or ATI graphics.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 403497] [NEW] Click using touchpad doesn't work on Acer Aspire One

2009-07-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

On the Acer Aspire One 150, under Karmic Alpha 2, the touchpad doesn't
respond to tapping that allows the touchpad to be used for left-button
clicking. The physical buttons work fine.

In the mouse settings, the option to allow tapping to be used as left-
clicking was toggled, and still doesn't work.

As far as I know, the touchpad is by Synaptics, but don't quote me on
that :P

2009-07-23 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi, I'm sort of a noob when it comes to these sort of things (bugs and
fixes)

Hi Zaf, tip #1 is that if the bug you think you have is closed, then
it's likely you have some unrelated bug that just happens to have
similar symptoms. See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting for tips on
creating your own bug report.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 402992] Re: Update problem by graphic solution

2009-07-23 Thread Ralf Stegmaier
Dear Bryce Harrington,

This night I implemented the next update to Ubuntu 9.04.
The procedure worked very well only some questions and
failure messages. The most programs are working.
The only one with problems is the CAD program DesignCAD 16
with wine. I think I must reinstall it. Under 8.04 it worked, only
the copy function worked not.

Please find as attachment for the bug 402992:

- The working xorg.conf from 2007-08-16 as basic
- Logfiles Xorg.???.log
- lspci with log-file

Best regards

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 366224] Re: [M7-LW] Rendering artifact on text in firefox and gedit

2009-07-23 Thread Matthew S
I can not only confirm this (IBM (now Lenovo) ThinkPad T60 with a Radeon
Mobility x1400), but say that it's not restricted to any one program,
theme, or even desktop environment. Firefox, Thunderbird, GIMP,
Nautilus, and even the desktop environment itself in certain
circumstances (dragging out a selection box, for example) all render
minor artifacts.

KDE seems to be affected worse than GNOME - check boxes, radio buttons,
and push buttons can be partially hidden behind artifacts. Sometimes an
entire text box (a URL bar or the like) or row of icons will be
completely obscured by garbage until forced to refresh (selecting,
typing, etc.).

Changing AccelMethod in xorg.conf from EXA to XAA seems to fix the
issue; however, performance drops dramatically. Simple tasks like
opening the main menu or maximizing a window can take a second or two.
It is a fix, but the performance loss makes it an unacceptable one - X
just uses way too much CPU with XAA to do mundane tasks.

i845 intel video does not boot either. After login, brown screen and
cursor. Keyboard entirely unresponsive. That's with karmic 20090722.
Will try with karmic 20090723 Alpha 3 as soon as I have time, hopefully
tonight.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 403794] [NEW] unmanaged X initially doesn't show mouse pointer

2009-07-23 Thread Nonconventionally Creative
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

Ubuntu 9.04
xserver-xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu18

When starting a new X session without a session/window manager, but only
something basic like an xterm, the mouse pointer initially does not appear.
However, moving the mouse up and left to be over the window makes it appear,
even when subsequently moved off (which loses keyboard focus).
I confirmed this off a (KDE3, but that doesn't matter) Jaunty LiveCD in
VirtualBox, so it's not my xorg.conf.
Hardy and Intrepid both displayed the mouse from the beginning; they also had a
gray background, whereas Jaunty just gives blackness.

simple, universal command to reproduce:
startx /usr/bin/xterm -geometry 20x10 -- :1
or
X :1 DISPLAY=:1.0 xterm -geometry 20x10

#:1 so it doesn't mess with your first X session
#-geometry 20x10 is necessary for people with only one, small screen, so the
cursor doesn't start on top of the xterm
#startx requires absolute paths, but makes things easy
#starting X via second method, you have to kill the job yourself, but proves it
isn't a bug in that part
attached screenshot

1 mouse over xterm
2 mouse away

which was previously completely impossible with the window jumping off

+1 from me from a functionality point of view; note I have not reviewed

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 331522] Re: [RS690M X1200] flickering after update on Jaunty

2009-07-23 Thread saliheenm
ATI X1250 Flickering Bug for Jaunty

I am using HP6715B which have a ATI X1250 video card. Which I was using
Intrepid 8.10 AMD64 which worked fine with restricted drivers. Then I
tried Jaunty AMD64 as soon as it released which caused me a nightmare of
flickering. Installing gdesklets made my flicker unbearable. I tried all
the trip and trick in the world which caused me to reinstall Jaunty
several times. The fact is I love Jaunty which I don't want to give up.

After I followed many techniques of internet the out come was confusing
and exhausting. But all the knowledge which I gone through this painful
experience came up with pleasing simple steps worked for me.

This is how you do

Before everything
1.backup your data
2.make sure you connect internet through RJ45 cable. Because in case of GUI
failure your wireless will not work. And would not be easy to fix the GUI.

Then,
3.Open the terminal window (Application → Accessories → Terminal)
4.Back up your xorg.conf file for future crisis
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
5.Edit xorg.conf file
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Delete everything in between Section “Device” and EndSection
Section Device
xx “xxx”
EndSection
Add the line which look like as follows
Section Device
Identifier radeonhd
EndSection
6.Save the file and exit geditor
7.remove all existing ati driver. In terminal fire the following command.
sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-radeon xserver-xorg-video-ati
exit the terminal window
8.Open Synaptic Package Manager and search “ati” and scroll and install the
following package
xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd 1.2.4-2
9.Reboot the system

joy oh joy that how you do it

if your GUI crashed after this follow the steps below to restore:
log into text mode
1.restore your xorg.conf which we back up before
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak /etc/X11/xorg.conf
2.install the default ati drivers
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-radeon xserver-xorg-video-ati

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 370292] Re: [i855] X freezing on intel 855GM

2009-07-23 Thread Mike Rose
Incorrect. Not fixed as of 2:2.8.0-0ubuntu1

In addition, I can't even seem to install the older 2.4 version over the top
anymore, so now I'm stuck with this buggy driver. Very frustrating when I'm
trying to work.
Bryce, is it at all possible to put the old intel driver in the official ubuntu
repos? Perhaps call it xserver-xorg-video-intel-old or something. This is
getting ridiculous.

This driver should never have been released as stable without testing on
all hardware it supposedly supports, and if it was released as unstable,
it should have never found it's way into ubuntu without an alternative.

2009-07-23 Thread Petrushka
After I saw the messages from Bryce Harrington just above, I was
reluctant to download a whole new .iso and install the OS from scratch,
having done a fresh install only the previous week.

Instead, I followed instructions on updating *just* the Intel graphics
driver at http://webupd8.blogspot.com/2009/06/new-ubuntu-intel-graphics-
drivers.html (those instructions also cite Bryce) and have been test-
driving for over a week now. The graphical corruption has completely
vanished, and I have had no problems or side-effects.
