[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363672] Re: Kubuntu Jaunty 64 bits hangups often with nvidia-glx-180

2009-08-19 Thread Lauri Niskanen
I have this bug on Jaunty 64-bit using GNOME. I have Geforce GTX 285 and
185.18.14 drivers.

The problem occurs quite rarely. Usually after my computer has been on
for the whole day. The system freezes randomly for three seconds and I
get a lot of graphical glitches. These messages are spammed on Xorg.log:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 413293] Re: [gm45] dual screen not complete

2009-08-19 Thread Russell Robinson
Yes, it fixes the main problem!

But, there are some bugs still...

My VGA Panel is 1280x1024 and my Notebook LCD Panel is 1440x900.

In Display Preferences:
1. I cannot place the Notebook Panel in exactly the right position in relation
to the VGA. This appears to be because the icon size of one or other (probably
the Notebook Panel) is not exactly right. So, the cursor jumps vertical
position when moving between to the two displays - not positioning solves this.
2. If I reduce the Notebook Panel resolution to 1280x1024, it gets a black
border at the top. (Not that I want to do that - I'm just reporting it to you).

It seems to me the problem is the icon size for moving the displays
around - they are not in proportion to the resolution that's specified
for the corresponding displays.

Thanks! I hope the above helps.

2009-08-19 Thread Bryce Harrington
Oh, good catch! Using the KMS names (VGA1, LVDS1) seems to work for me as
well. I wonder why xrandr doesn't give an error when an invalid output name

Ah, that's right the names have changed. Sounds like you've got stuff

to this that you think should be addressed as well now that you've
straightened out the naming scheme, please open new bug reports (we like
keeping things to one-bug-report-per-issue since it's nuts keeping track

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 385232] Re: [i965] UXA Freeze

2009-08-19 Thread Lenar
So you know, I have no intention to open another bug. I've written here a big
bunch
of information, attached a number of dumps and so on. To replicate that
information in
another bug is time-consuming and pointless to me, I don't have time for this
circus.

And where is this one freeze rule per person written? It's not nice to say
aftwerwards that
you have rule when you have not made to rule known and accessible to those
governed by it.

So you use the information I've attached here or not - I don't care. I tried to
help, I failed, freezes still
happen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 413665] Re: xorg nearly 80% CPU load since 9.0.4

2009-08-19 Thread StefanF
I read both sites, but did not find any hint there that solved my
problem. The problem occurs also when simply booting the Kubunty CD,
therefore I thought that providing a list of running applications and
daemons was not necessary. I also wrote that killed everything that I
can kill, leaving only a minimum KDE desktop remaining.

The reportbug command was not useful in my case because the computer was
so slow that I was not able to get the internet connection working.
Therefore I had to write the bug ticket manually on another computer
with a working Ubuntu installation.

What additional info do you need?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 410305] Re: screen flickering on dell laptop

2009-08-19 Thread Aurelien Naldi
It seems to have been a problem with the in-kernel part of the driver and KMS,
fixed in the latest kernel update (2.6.31-6):
* I spotted some flicker in usplash and text console as well
* booting without KMS removed it
* it is gone, even with KMS enabled in 2.6.31-6 (and back if booting again on
2.6.31-5, it was not fixed by one of the other updates)

For the record, here is a short answer to your question:

The symptoms are similar to that of bug #399829:
many redraw trigger screen flickering, for exemple moving windows of the gdm
animations, even text scrolling in a terminal
the only difference is that changing the resolution did not work arround it for
me, otherwise, the flickering looked like the one in the video linked in bug
#399829.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 379157] Re: [i945G] Samsung TV not detected on VGA output (no screens)

2009-08-19 Thread Jordi Puigsegur
I first tried to use a live CD but didn't know how to reboot after the
changes so I tried to use a boot USB stick but was not successful.

Since it might be a while until I am able to have a working USB stick
I'll use a live CD ,but here I have doubts. I understand how I can
install the patch in a live CD but I don't know how to test that the
patch works. Before formatting I could just reboot the computer after
every xorg.conf change and test everything but in a live CD I cannot
reboot ... how do I test that the new X configuration works after
installing? And how do I go back to a working conf. to submit the files?

Thanks,
Jordi.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 415692] [NEW] I cannot disable touchpad tapping because there is no option on the mouse preferences dalog and gsynaptics will not run.

2009-08-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: xfree86-driver-synaptics

I am unable to disable tapping on my touchpad. I purchased an ASUS K70IO
laptop and after some minor tweaking everything works fine, even the
touchpad. However, I cannot stand touchpad tapping, so when I went to
disable it, the option was not there. I have scoured the search engine
results and cannot find anything that might help. I am not even sure
what touchpad is even installed any more. I tried to use gsynaptics to
disable tapping, but when I run it I get GSynaptics couldn't
initialize You have to set 'SHMConfig' 'true' in xorg.conf or
XF86Config to use GSynaptics.

However, there is no entry in xorg.conf for a touchpad, mouse, or
pointing device and XF86Config file does not exist.

I must be able to disable tapping. It is the most annoying and
infuriating feature ever invented and the person who came up with it
should be shot. At least metaphorically.

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty.

OK, the new version also defaults to EXA. It will only force XAA if you
are low on VRAM, but your 64MB is considered enough.

Many random freezes issues have been fixed in Karmic or xorg-edgers, so
if you have the possibility of trying them out it could be worthwhile.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 378482] Re: [GM45] Dual screen is not properly configured, size and refresh problem (UXA bug)

2009-08-19 Thread tuXzero
I have the same problem (see: attachment), my lspci command outputs
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series
Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07). I search the Internet
and found
(http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Xorg_RandR_1.2#the_Virtual_screen) that
my frame buffer can not exceed 2048x2048. So these steps I tried to
confirm this:

Note: The attached screen-shot is made with Laptop on 1280x800 and
Acer on 1024x768 with Compiz enabled.

1. I started with Compiz disabled (i assume this disabled DRI). All
problems disappear except the problem of having my cursor disappear when
i place it at the bottom of my Acer monitor. This can be seen as a
black bar right from the workspace switcher (see: screen-shot).

2. Next i go to the Visual Effects en switch the radio button from
None to Normal. This causes the following error: Desktop effects
could not be enabled. The radio button jumps back to None.

3. I use Display Preferences (xrandr gui) to set Acer to 640x480.
After i found my cursor somewhere in the borders of my Acer screen I
enabled Compiz by repeating step 2. Only this time Compiz successfully
enabled. The difference between this and the previous step is that in
the previous step the frame buffer was exceeded horizontal with
(1280+1024)-2048 = 256 pixels (which matches exact with my screen dump).

4. Now when I set the Acer screen back to 1024x768 I get the problem
described here and in my screen-shot. To fix this I disabled Compiz with
the Visual Effects GUI. If u want u can jump to step 1 to repeat the
procedure again.

My /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 411704] Re: intermittent system crashes supposedly caused by intel xorg driver

2009-08-19 Thread Bryce Harrington
This sounds like a really common freeze issue we had with -intel on
Jaunty. The freezes are largely solved in Karmic, unfortunately we've
found backporting the fixes to Jaunty is essentially impossible due to
the breadth of the architectural changes involved. Since I'm fairly
sure this is solved in Karmic I'm closing it as fixed; feel free to
reopen if you can reproduce the issue on Karmic, in which case you
should follow the directions at the following link to collect debug data
needed for the freezes:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 411295] Re: External screen resolution is not detected correctly

2009-08-19 Thread Bryce Harrington
Well, next I'd like to forward this issue upstream, but first it must be
retested on latest development version of Karmic to make sure the issue
still happens there with the latest code. ISO images are available via
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/. If you can reproduce it in the LiveCD
environment, you shouldn't need to modify your installed system. Also
please attach a fresh Xorg.0.log and dmesg from this testing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 415822] [NEW] [i945GM][xorg-edgers][2.6.31-020631rc6-generic] Unable to set virtual size greater than 2048x2048

2009-08-19 Thread Hans Jørgen Hoel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Dell Latitude D820 in docking station with one DVI and one VGA monitor
connected.

Before I upgraded to Jaunty from Gutsy, setting virtual to greater than
2048x2048 would automatically disable DRI.

After upgrading to Jaunty, performance both with and without DRI was
terrible. Tried xorg-edgers PPA and unofficial mainline kernel which
fixed performance issues.

With xorg-edgers PPA and the unofficial mainline kernel (v2.6.30.3), and
virtual set greater than 2048x2048, xorg would exit when started, saying
that DRI could not be enabled.

Upgraded to the v2.6.31-rc6 kernel. According to
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.31-rc6/CHANGES it
contains the fix drm/i915: Allow frame buffers up to 4096x4096 on
915/945 class hardware. With this kernel, xorg starts when virtual is
set greater than 2048x2048, but second screen is not enabled.

Running xrandr (with virtual set to either 3360x1050 or 4096x4096 in
xorg.conf):

xrandr --output LVDS --off # must be done separately
xrandr --output TMDS-1 --mode 1680x1050 --output VGA --mode 1680x1050
--right-of TMDS-1
xrandr: screen cannot be larger than 2048x2048 (desired size 3360x1050)

xrandr --fb 3360x1050 --output TMDS-1 --mode 1680x1050 --output VGA --mode
1680x1050 --right-of TMDS-1
xrandr: screen cannot be larger than 2048x2048 (desired size 3360x1050)

I'm also explicitly disabling DRI and DRI2 in xorg.conf.

António, for measuring power draw on a notebook try 'powertop' or right click
the power icon in the notification area for 'Power History'. 'cat
/proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state' could work too, but the path might have changed
since I last used it (can't test).
Desktops usually require an external meter to measure the power draw.

I would do some testing too but I'm on dial-up currently. Will do it
next week when I'm back to fast internet access.

Hi!

Create file
/etc/hal/fdi/policy/no-3dconnexion-trackpoint.fdi
and put the following lines into this file.

?xml version=1.0 encoding=ISO-8859-1?
deviceinfo version=0.2
device
match key=info.product contains=3Dconnexion
remove key=input.x11_driver/
/match
/device
/deviceinfo

After xorg restart it stop treat SpacePilot as a TrackPoint, however, I
don't known is it sufficient to get work SpaceNavigator with Second
Life.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 412907] Re: X crashes and system is only responsive via sys-req on keyboard

2009-08-19 Thread Liam O'Reilly
I noticed a vital clue which I missed before.

My mouse is responsive, but no clicks are registered (as if I never
clicked), I can move the mouse around the screen. The keyboard is
unresponsive apart from sys-req. I did not think to check the caps lock
led. I will do this next time the crash happens.

Here is what I think is a full backtrace (I don't really know what one
of these should look like). I followed the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing). I found Xorg's pid then started
gdb, attached to xorg's pid and run the gdb command backtrace full.

I hope this helps. If not then please let me know how I can help more.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 412907] Re: X crashes and system is only responsive via sys-req on keyboard

2009-08-19 Thread Liam O'Reilly
I just remembered that I have a modified xorg.conf file. I have changed
my AccelMethod to UXA (Ubuntu Juanty 64 bit). This was because under the
default setting, the terminals in gnome were unusable for me as the
scrolling speed was too slow. Using UXA the terminals are normal and
much faster.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 415876] [NEW] Hue setting not retained for watching videos

2009-08-19 Thread Scott Ritchie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

In Karmic, I seem to be having troubles with the Hue setting. At first
it was defaulted to -1000 (rather than Jaunty's 0), resulting in blue-
green people when watching videos. When I manually reset it to 0 the
video looks fine, however this setting doesn't seem to be saving
properly.

If I restart and open a video, I'll get blue people again, however as
soon as I reopen nvidia-settings (even while the video is playing), it
will remember the correct setting of 0 and fix it.

** Affects: nvidia-settings (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

2009-08-19 Thread saludasteve
Not only did that not fix the touchpad problem, when I rebooted I discovered
that Ubuntu will not even boot up. It appears that a new kernal was
installed and gnome seems to start but I only get the command line. Now I
have to reinstall ubuntu just to get it to work.

Status in “xserver-xorg-input-synaptics” package in Ubuntu: New

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: xfree86-driver-synaptics

I am unable to disable tapping on my touchpad. I purchased an ASUS K70IO
laptop and after some minor tweaking everything works fine, even the
touchpad. However, I cannot stand touchpad tapping, so when I went to
disable it, the option was not there. I have scoured the search engine
results and cannot find anything that might help. I am not even sure what
touchpad is even installed any more. I tried to use gsynaptics to disable
tapping, but when I run it I get GSynaptics couldn't initialize You have
to set 'SHMConfig' 'true' in xorg.conf or XF86Config to use GSynaptics.

However, there is no entry in xorg.conf for a touchpad, mouse, or pointing
device and XF86Config file does not exist.

I must be able to disable tapping. It is the most annoying and infuriating
feature ever invented and the person who came up with it should be shot. At
 least metaphorically.

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 350327] Re: vinagre connects but appears that I cannot start anything on remote desktop

2009-08-19 Thread bc90021
Following @Jeremy Manning's post, I realised that I'd only been testing
with Chicken of the VNC from my Macbook. However, I have tested this
morning using an Ubuntu laptop, and the problem persists. I can connect
to the remote machine, and the initial screen comes up, but nothing
refreshes on the client side, even though the actions are taking place
on the remote machine. (I can see the results of those actions having
been performed if I disconnect and reconnect.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 379157] Re: [i945G] Samsung TV not detected on VGA output (no screens)

2009-08-19 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
With a LiveCD you lose all changes when you reboot, but you don't need
to reboot to activate the changes[*]. It is sufficient to restart X, and
you can do that by simply logging out (on a LiveCD you will be logged in
again after 10 seconds IIRC). Alternatively, you can switch to a VT and
do a `/etc/init.d/gdm restart`.

The easiest way to get the log files when your computer has a black
screen is to ssh in from another computer. For that you need the
computer to be connected via cable instead of wireless and you will need
to `apt-get install openssh-server` and since it is a LiveCD you will
need to set a password for the ubuntu user to be able to log in with
`passwd`, or alternatively for the root user with `sudo passwd root`.

If you don't have another computer available to ssh from, you can also
save the Xorg.0.log to a USB key. Before you restart X, insert the USB
key and see where it gets mounted (should be /media/something). Then
from a VT before you restart X, write `sleep 60; cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log
/media/something` where you replace something with the appropriate
directory. That should wait 60 seconds and copy the log file. If you
restart X during those 60 seconds, a new Xorg.0.log will be created and
despite your black screen you will get the log file on your USB stick.

[*] I remember you had some problems earlier that mysteriously went away
when rebooting, but hopefully those won't show up now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 374008] Re: [X2300] Mouse corruption, then X freeze

2009-08-19 Thread Richard Davies
This is the built-in card in a laptop, so I think it is not AGP. Here are the
specs:
http://ati.amd.com/products/mobilityradeonx2300/specs.html

In any case, I've tried all the AGPMode values. None of them solves the
issue.

I won't be able to test Karmic until I upgrade to that distribution,
post-release.

In this bug. i reported it after rebooting using a different xorg.conf

iv refiled the bug as bug 415718 I reported that bug from shell using

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 415927] [NEW] screen flashes when kde starts, wine applicantion starts or i try change the brightness's screen

2009-08-19 Thread suidaso
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When kde starts or wine application starts or I try change the
brightness's screen with plasma-applet (but the brightness doesn't
change) my screen show flashes (some parts of the screen move to
other place of the screen instantly, it's similar to flashes)

The solution of similar bug #356510 (

resolve my problem :S

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 407676] Re: [i965gm] dual-screen set to clone after closing laptop lid

2009-08-19 Thread danielwedema
I've tested it on the latest LiveCD (Alpha 4 - Released August 13th, 2009).
I can reproduce the bug here too. Although now by default when I close the lid
the laptop goes to suspend, when I change this in Power Management Preferences
to 'Blank Screen', the bug appears.

I've included the output from dmesg and the Xorg.0.log file.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 415964] [NEW] xv does not work (badalloc, using the x-updates ppa)

2009-08-19 Thread Marien Zwart
Public bug reported:

I have an acer aspire 1350 laptop with (from lspci -nn):

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: VIA Technologies, Inc.
KM400/KN400/P4M800 [S3 UniChrome] [1106:7205] (rev 01)

Using jaunty it needs the x-updates ppa for X to start at all (at least without
an xorg.conf). With x-updates (xserver-xorg-video-openchrome
1:0.2.903+svn741-1build1) it works, but launching an app that uses xv (like
totem) crashes that app with a BadAlloc and a complaint that Bandwidth is
insufficient. Check bios memory settings.. Adding some debugging code to the
driver revealed that in via_video.c:DecideOverlaySupport width and height
(gotten from
pBIOSInfo-Panel-NativeMode-Width and -Height) were 0, causing that function
to return FALSE by default. After noticing via_mode.c:VIAGetPanelSize is the
only function that sets NativeModeIndex without also setting NativeMode I came
up with a horrible (duplicating a table) patch that makes xv work (attached).

(VIAGetPanelSize also contains a cosmetic bug: the PanelSizeString array
(used only for logging) is out of sync with the defines in via_bios.h,
so for my 1024x768 it logs Using panel at 800x600. after correctly
detecting a VIA_PANEL10X7. A slightly better patch could fix that log
message, using the same table needed to set NativeMode-Width and
-Height.)

If you need me to test something feel free to poke me on irc instead of
here for faster response times (I joined #ubuntu-x).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363326] Re: Brightness control doesn't work on Amilo mini UI 3520

2009-08-19 Thread mad_man
Hi there, i also have this lappie, i checked the screen brightness and the
problem is even bigger...
the first thing is - yes - the cde events are inivible by xev, but after i do:
dmesg | tail i can see them:

[ 2690.098867] atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes 6a keycode' to make it known.
[ 2690.199515] atkbd.c: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0x6a on
isa0060/serio0).

here, so there is no problem, we can set them by setkeycodes...

the bigger problem is that the brightness cannot be set by xbacklight or
even gnome-power-manager.. but.. those keys / the backlight settings -
are working in bios /grub, but no after ubuntu kernel is loaded...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 416001] [NEW] Notification and similar dialogs are displaying corrupted after update on Karmic

2009-08-19 Thread Jamal Fanaian

Ubuntu release: Karmic 9.10
xserver-xorg-video-ati version installed:
1:6.12.99+git20090629.f39cafc5-0ubuntu6

After updating last night, notification dialogs are showing up corrupted
(white with lines around it). The same is happening for other dialogs
such as the brightness level notice that is displayed when the laptop is
unplugged. Gnome-do also appears the same way.

Also, when logging in the entire screen will go white with lines for a
few seconds and then go back to showing the orange background from the
login screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 415132] [NEW] GM965/GL960 intel freeze with kde desktop effects

2009-08-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hi,

I'm using jaunty with kde 4.2.4, the new kernel (2.6.30-020630rc6) and
the updated x-server. The xserver-xorg.video-intel package has version
:2:2.8.0+git20090814.926c7e7d-0ubuntu0sarvatt~jaunty

For the last 3 weeks my PC completely freezes (no movement in the animations,
mouse can't be moved, does not react to any keyboard-combination), whenever I
try to use desktop effects. I followed instructions on gaining info for intel
freezes here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze and will attach
the output. However the instructions are for gnome and there was no kdm folder,
so I have no kdm.log.
The freeze for the dri_debug info was provoked by switching through windows.

The PC does not freeze on desktop-effects when I use the 2.6.28-14
kernel.

I also get random freezes with both kernels on that machine, which look
a lot like the bug reported here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/345119

If you need any further information please let me know.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 410309] Re: [i965GM] Screen goes blank after rotation

Setting to incomplete while we wait for register dumps.

Also, I've put in two fixes to the xserver to handle blanking issues, so
you might want to update to latest xserver and see if that has an impact
on the issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 309776] Re: jaunty xorg 100% cpu usage

2009-08-19 Thread Sandeep
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 307306 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/307306

Hi All,
I was facing the same issue with my Laptop Compaq - AMD-Athlon-X2 -QL-64,
Nvidia 8200, 3GRam. I am running Ubuntu using Wubi.
top used to give Xorg as 100% of one of the cores if you move a window it
simply shot up, and the other windows used to appear with a curtain effect!!.
Anyhoos, was able to solve it as below

I guess the problem was with the NVidia Drivers download the latest
NVIDIA drivers from the Nvidia
site(http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/linux_display_amd64_185.18.31_uk.html
.. please choose your video card details etc). restart using safe mode
and select the root display and run the command sh NVIDIA... should be
working fine after this. and yes do not forget to update the system
using the update manager...

Hope it helps

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 416073] [NEW] [karmik][GM965]low intel graphics performance - again

2009-08-19 Thread Ivan Stetsenko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I've been experiencing it since clean install of alpha2, but now I've
booted from Hardy LiveDVD and done some benchmarking.

Extreme Tux Racer IS a benchmark, isn't it?

Game settings: all graphics extras are disable, except from FPS; 800x600
resolution.

Hardy: ~60 FPS
Karmik: ~20 FPS

3 times drop!

glxgears (definitely not a benchmark, but...)

Hardy: 4200 frames in 5 secs
Karmik: 1400 frames in 5 secs

3 times drop again. And compiz feels slower as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 401055] Re: [MASTER] Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'firefox-3.5' received an X Window System error (BadWindow)

2009-08-19 Thread Bryce Harrington
I've gone ahead and forwarded this upstream as an X bug, however really
some additional analysis ought to be done. I don't think there's enough
info on the upstream bug for us to be able to expect a response, but who
knows, worth a shot I guess.

It would be helpful to narrow this to a test code that reproduces the
problem. *Maybe* since firefox is so widely available they'll look at
it, but most typically with these kinds of bugs upstream wants to see a
concise test case.

It is also almost always a good idea to run the client app using xtrace
in order to study the client-server interaction and see exactly what
sequence of commands the client is sending to the server. Especially in
this case I think it's extraordinarily likely upstream is going to ask
for this to be done.

2009-08-19 Thread Bryce Harrington
Info on using xtrace here -- http://xtrace.alioth.debian.org/

I've roughed up a page on debugging client XErrors since these seems to
be a pretty common class of error, and we didn't seem to already have a
good knowledgebase for people on how to deal with them:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/XError

It would be majorly helpful if you guys could flesh that out further
since you all probably have more experience with the tricks of debugging
these kinds of issues.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 416132] [NEW] black screen with intel 855GM/Xorg/HDMI

2009-08-19 Thread Goofy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Ubuntu 9.04
xorg: 1:7.4~5ubuntu18
xserver-xorg-video-intel: 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu9.4
connected monitor is _only_ a Epson TW3800 projector via DVI2HDMI cable (native
resolution: 1920x1050)

With this hardware configuration (about since ubuntu 8.1.0) several
problems occur:

-the standard text mode 640x...@90hz is instable, the projector is not able to
show this low resolution stable, screen goes blank and is only visible shortly
-no higher console/graphics mode is automatically choosen
-not even the safe graphics mode of the installation cd with xforcevesa
results in a visible screen
-the problem is related to only 2 modelines get detected for this monitor
device (640x480 and 1920x1050)

With an older Xorg (X Window System Version 1.3.0, my current workaround) i was
able to get a working xorg.conf. However, with an even older server/driver/VGA
many more modelines where detected by the driver for this monitor-device.

WIthout an xorg.conf i also get only a black screen for this setup (need
to force to enable TDMI in favor of VGA for pipe A/B).

further problems with this configuration:

-as soon as the xrandtray tool is started (no action triggered), the screen get
empty/background colored and a restart of the XServer is the only way to get
the display back
-as soon as any resolution/mode switch by any program is triggered the screen
gets either black or background-colored and one needs to restart the XServer to
get the image back

The expected behavior is:
-use the highest possible text mode and/or another available resolution that
can be safely displayed
-auto detection if only tje TDMI-pipe (HDMI or DVI) is connected and correct
setup of xorg(.conf)
-xrandr-tray should not be able to scramble the display permanently for the
standard use-cases
-switching of resolutions should work
-detection of all available mode-lines
