[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 419264] Re: Uses 100% CPU with Intel drivers

2009-08-28 Thread Bryce Harrington
After downgrading libdrm and mesa to the versions in the x-retro PPA,
the issue seems to have gone away. Previously, compiz would freeze
reliably after 5 min usage. With the x-retro ppa I've been running now
20 minutes with nary a problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 419264] Re: Uses 100% CPU with Intel drivers

2009-08-28 Thread Bryce Harrington
I'm gathering that either there's a bug in mesa or libdrm, or else
compiz needs to be updated in order to work properly with the new mesa.

I've reviewed the list of changes subsequent to the snapshot date for
both our libdrm and mesa, and do not see an obvious commit that fixes
this issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 294972] Re: MASTER: xorg high cpu usage, general system sluggishness

2009-08-28 Thread Ph. Marek
I have the problem on a notebook; Xorg runs with 100% CPU, in a
setitimer();setitimer();select() loop.

I think it mostly happens after suspend-to-ram from a console.

Going into the X session and waiting some seconds usually helps;
although then hal seems to get into a process-creation loop, and has to
be restarted, too.

Bryce, you mentioned something about dixSetPrivate as the possible
cause. Do you see anything in the following upstream GIT commit that
would fix it:

geode/commit/?id=b28abde0276ddd7f687242f3886f98b0e49a7fc2

This commit concerns precisely dixSetPrivate on GX2.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 418939] Re: Too many crimean tatar keyboard layouts added for Romania

2009-08-28 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
I think you both got it wrong: xkeyboard-config groups layouts by country.
In our country there are many ethnic groups.
We should make their life easier and help them write in Romanian and their
native language without much effort.

What I think is wrong is the number of keyboard layouts for 24.000
Tatars - one for every 6.000, and if we consider Linux users are 1% of
computer users and all consider that all Romanians use a computer (which
is evidently false) we have one keyboard layout for less than 60 Tatars.

I think we can accommodate all 240 Linux using Tatars in one single
keyboard layout.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 371512] Re: [CLE266] [jaunty] Cannot create openchrome XvMC Surface in mythfrontend

2009-08-28 Thread MarcRandolph
Sure - a first step would certainly be to subscribe to the weekly
0.21-fixes as described on the web page above, and 9.04 includes newer
openchrome drivers. If it is fixed, there, then it is likely fixed on
0.22. If not, upstream would only be interested if this is still
occuring 0.22 though. You could try posting the mythtv-users forum as
well to see if others are having trouble, or have hints. Sorry I don't
have more ideas.

There's no way to evaluate the performance regression with this package

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 261573] Re: Intrepid: No AltGr key defined - e.g. no @ symbol with MacBook Pro

2009-08-28 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Ok, just tested it with Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 2 live Desktop. You can switch
the keyboard to Apple MacBook/MacBook Pro (Intl) without getting any
error message. What a progress after a year!

However, there is still no @ sign by default. Also, I did not manage
to configure it by defining a Third Level Chooser. Seems that Ubuntu
does not even know the key that IMHO might well be used as the AltGr key
and which I called the strange key (see above).

Btw. someone edited my original posting typing some workaround into my
text. I do not consider this to be useful.

@ Bryce Harrington: Personally, I do not think that Ubuntu users should
be forced to open additional accounts and to make things even more
complicated by having to post bugs upstream.

I also see this problem at an other machine that runs a legacy version
of the driver (173.14.20) and the problem is I don't even know what
triggers it, the one users is doing it's own business and suddenly the
other's X session crashes (my first idea was to disable the screensaver,
it's not that [could it be the power save?] )

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 285701] Re: x gives black screen with fglrx

2009-08-28 Thread stelford
So, I have eventually ended up switching out my videocards in my laptop
and replacing with GeForce.. no problems at all now ;)

But, I DID notice this from the most recent Catalyst (9.8) release notes
;

[RandR 1.2] Monitor detection now functions properly, client no longer
takes several seconds per monitor

May be worth someone giving that new version a try ? I firmly believe
that the monitor detection was fubared.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 420599] [NEW] blank screen with compiz and mesa 7.6

2009-08-28 Thread Ryan C. Underwood
Public bug reported:

Using xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.8.1 and kernel 2.6.31-8 from karmic

Upgraded to mesa 7.6 from mesa 7.5 in karmic. greeter is displayed
correctly, but after login the screen is black with a moveable cursor.
The cursor changes depending on the screen location, meaning that it is
aware of the program windows that should be being drawn underneath it.
Also, when Ctrl-Alt-Backspace is hit, the normal desktop can be seen
briefly flashing onto the screen before returning to the console.
Disabling DRI or reverting to mesa 7.5 makes it all work again.

I've just installed karmic alpha 4 and dist upgraded.
The system performance is really slow, and 'top' shows that xorg is
constantly on CPU (20%).
+ I also switched off compiz to check if it was the cause, but it's not.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 420600] Re: xorg eats up all my CPU

2009-08-28 Thread Nicolò Chieffo
Thanks for answering. My card is intel x4500hd and my xorg.conf is the
default one (I'm not on linux now)

What's interesting is that even the live session from the daily live
cd has the same problem, while alpha 4 has not.
Another interesting thing is that xorg is not the only process which
eats cpu, but almost every process (with a non trivial logic of
course) are using lots of cpu.

What I'm doing now is this: test yesterday daily live cd and see if it
works, then I will post the packages that ubuntu wants to upgrade.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 419126] Re: X fails to start up after mesa+git update - gdm loops after logging in

2009-08-28 Thread Kazade
I've just upgraded to the broken DRM and new kernel (rc8) then I copied
my previously self-compiled drm.ko from the previous kernel modules and
lo and behold I can log in with DRI!

I compiled with this patch: http://www.botchco.com/alex/xorg/0001
-radeon-drm-Add-3D-support-on-r6xx-r7xx-chips.patch

So I'm guessing either GIT HEAD or something in that patch fixes it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 420671] [NEW] UXA indirectly rendered and causes freezes on Intel 945GME

2009-08-28 Thread MindVirus

Compiz is slow and uses a lot of CPU. After a half-hour or so of
computer usage, Xorg crashes and I can't Ctrl+Alt+Fn to a different

Right now I am in Karmic and am using UXA (as it is my only choice).
This happened in Jaunty, as well, when I tried UXA instead of EXA (which
worked perfectly).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 419126] Re: X fails to start up after mesa+git update - gdm loops after logging in

2009-08-28 Thread mattduckman
i can confirm that this patch fixes the gdm logic issue.

regarding 3d acceleration though, I get a lot of display issues such as
artifacts when using compiz. metacity works fine though.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 320585] Re: [Jaunty] Does not respond to tapping (scrolling fine)

2009-08-28 Thread jmmL
I'm running karmic, and have version 1.1.2-1ubuntu3. The current
behaviour of my synaptics touchpad is 2 finger right-click, and 3 finger
middle-click. As I understand, the reverse behaviour should be expected
because 105_correct_multifinger_click.patch was dropped in
1.1.2-1ubuntu2.

Is anyone else having this problem?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 420803] [NEW] FFe for updating -ati/mesa/libdrm git snapshots until their individual releases

2009-08-28 Thread Bryce Harrington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

[Request]
Standing FFe exceptions in Karmic for -ati until 6.13.0 (or 7.0.0?) release,
libdrm until 2.4.13 (or 2.5.0?), and mesa until 7.6.0 in order to gain Kernel
Mode-setting for ATI graphics hardware.

[Rationale]
KMS on -ati is a major goal for the Karmic release, yet KMS is not yet
available in an official release. We have been carrying git snapshots of -ati,
libdrm, and mesa in order to follow the current development, to enable testing
and QA to proceed in parallel with upstream's work, so when a release does come
we can integrate it with minimal worry.

[Testing]
In addition to validating updates on my own hardware, all git snapshot updates
to Karmic are done only after the given snapshot has had some testing time in
the xorg-edgers PPA repository. A number of users run this ppa and file bug
reports when they spot problems, so this will help us avoid most critical
issues. As well, by waiting a few days this lets us check the current git
master to see if upstream put in important bug fixes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 420600] Re: xorg eats up all my CPU

2009-08-28 Thread wumzi
So yesterday, things worked fine, and today after upgrade (or currently
daily image), it doesn't work anymore ...

What are the other process that consums too much cpu ? If every process
eats too much, a bug may affect another package than xorg.

You told me that your xorh.conf is the default one, but, in your report
it's written XorgConf: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory:
'/etc/X11/xorg.conf' , are you sure it exists ?

Thanks :)

The following packages will be upgraded:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 420803] Re: FFe for updating -ati/mesa/libdrm git snapshots until their individual releases

2009-08-28 Thread Bryce Harrington
Note that while we anticipate these three components will release prior
to FinalFreeze (Oct 15th), none of these three projects publish roadmaps
so it's difficult to project exactly when they'll release. Mesa usually
publishes release-candidates for a few weeks prior to release, but has
not begun doing this. The other two projects have not traditionally
produced RCs.

Possible contingencies we're keeping and will begin evaluating as
options starting at BetaFreeze for still-unreleased components are:

   * Lock down on a particular git snapshot that pre-Beta testing has shown to
be reasonably stable
   * Revert back to prior stable release version
   * Update the git snapshot during the week between Beta and FinalFreeze

You should be able to eliminate apparmor (security software) from your

Each other package including smartdimmer has a relation with display ...

I don't know if it's normal that no xorg.conf has been generated, will
check.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 404135] Re: New nvidia 190.25 driver available

2009-08-28 Thread Artur Rona
** Summary changed:

+    http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2071551
+

  Changes since 185.18.*:

- * Added GLX protocol support (i.e., for GLX indirect rendering) for the
following OpenGL extensions:
- o GL_ARB_draw_buffers
- o GL_EXT_Cg_shader
- o GL_EXT_gpu_program_parameters
- o GL_NV_fragment_program
- o GL_NV_gpu_program4
- o GL_NV_register_combiners
- o GL_NV_vertex_program1_1
- o GL_NV_vertex_program2
- * Added unofficial GLX protocol support (i.e., for GLX indirect
rendering) for the following OpenGL extensions:
- o GL_ARB_geometry_shader4
- o GL_ARB_shader_objects
- o GL_ARB_texture_buffer_object
- o GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object
- o GL_ARB_vertex_shader
- o GL_EXT_bindable_uniform
- o GL_EXT_compiled_vertex_array
- o GL_EXT_geometry_shader4
- o GL_EXT_gpu_shader4
- o GL_EXT_texture_buffer_object
- o GL_NV_geometry_program4
- o GL_NV_vertex_program
- o GL_NV_parameter_buffer_object
- o GL_NV_vertex_program4
- GLX protocol for GL_EXT_vertex_array was also updated to incorporate
rendering using GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object. Use of these extensions with GLX
indirect rendering requires the AllowUnofficialGLXProtocol X configuration
option and the __GL_ALLOW_UNOFFICIAL_PROTOCOL environment variable.
- * Fixed a bug that caused glXGetVideoSyncSGI, glXWaitVideoSyncSGI, and
glXGetRefreshRateSGI to operate on the wrong screen when there are multiple X
screens.
- * Fixed glXQueryVersion to report GLX version 1.4. NVIDIA's GLX version
has been 1.4 for several releases, and was already reported as 1.4 in the GLX
client and GLX server version strings.
- * Fixed a problem that caused window border corruption when the screen is
rotated.
- * Fixed a bug that causes corruption or GPU errors when an application
paints a redirected window whose background is set to ParentRelative on X.Org
servers older than 1.5. This was typically triggered by running Kopete while
using Compiz or Beryl.
- * Added support for configuring the GPU PowerMizer Mode on GeForce 8 or
later GPUs with multiple performance levels via nvidia-settings and NV-CONTROL.
- * Fixed a bug in VDPAU that could cause visible corruption when decoding
H.264 clips with alternating frame/field coded reference pictures, and a video
surface is concurrently removed from the DPB, and re-used as the decode target,
in a single decode operation. This affected all GPUs supported by VDPAU.
- * Fixed a bug in VDPAU that could cause visible corruption near the
bottom edge of the picture when decoding VC-1 advanced profile clips whose
heights are not exact multiples of 16 pixels, on G98 and MCP7x (IGP) GPUs.
- * Enhanced VDPAU to better handle corrupt/invalid H.264 bitstreams on
G84, G86, G92, G94, G96, or GT200 GPUs. This should prevent most cases of
display preemption that are caused by bitstream errors.
- * Fixed an X server crash when using the VDPAU overlay-based presentation
queue and VT-switching away from the X server.
- * Enhanced VDPAU's detection of the GPU's video decode capabilities.
- * Fixed a bug in VDPAU that could cause ghosting/flashing issues when
decoding H.264 clips, in certain full DPB scenarios, on G98 and MCP7x.
- * Fixed VDPAU to detect an attempt to destroy the VdpDevice object when
other device-owned objects still exist. VDPAU now triggers display
preemption, and returns an error, when this occurs.
- * Enhanced VDPAU's error handling and resource management in presentation
queue creation and operation. This change correctly propagates all errors back
to the client application, and avoids some resource leaks.
+ * Added code to reject screen modes based on available DisplayPort link
bandwidth. Fixes display corruption caused by allowing high bandwidth modes on
display devices that can't handle them, such as certain DisplayPort-to-VGA
adapters that only support 2 DisplayPort lanes.
+ * Fixed an initialization problem on some mobile GPUs.
+ * Worked around X.Org X server Bugzilla bug #22804. This bug allows X
clients to send invalid XGetImage requests to the hardware, leading to screen
corruption or hangs. This was most commonly triggered by running JDownloader in
KDE 4.
+ * Fixed a crash in nvidia-settings displaying GPU information when in
Xinerama.
+
+ * Added GLX protocol support (i.e., for GLX indirect rendering) for the
following OpenGL extensions:
+   o GL_ARB_draw_buffers
+   o GL_EXT_Cg_shader
+   o GL_EXT_gpu_program_parameters

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 420406] Re: intel: resume from suspend causes problems and freeze

2009-08-28 Thread Oybon
I get a similar behavior on my Lenovo intel core 2 with x86

Found if I `quickly' go to tty3 and /etc/init.d/gdm restart
/etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart I can get full functionality back. If
I don't act quickly it can result in a full system freeze

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 420803] Re: FFe for updating -ati/mesa/libdrm git snapshots until their individual releases

2009-08-28 Thread Bryce Harrington
Are there any commit policies one way or the other on the branches
being tracked that would tell us the kinds of changes that will be going
into them between now and release?

Unfortunately there are not. mesa goes through a set of release
candidates during which time commits tend to be mostly bug fixes, but
the development efforts are not as strictly formalized as in other
projects. -ati has also tended to go through a (short) rc process in
recent releases; its process isn't strictly formalized either, but -ati
upstream has been good about coordinating with our release schedule
dates in previous releases when we've been in this situation.

Also causes Octave/Gnuplot under Xrdp to produce mostly black plots and

The fix is to copy or symlink rgb.txt to /usr/share/X11/rgb.txt See:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 413788] Re: [ubuntu karmic] intel-video finds correct screen size but sets it incorrectly

2009-08-28 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Hi ullix,

Could you please also provide the output of `xrandr --verbose` from when
the monitor is in the 1024x768/1152x900 resolution, which should be
useful for us in this case. It would also be nice if you could take a
screenshot using the screenshot tool and see what size the resulting
image is.

Could you also remove the file ~/.config/monitors.xml which contains
your user specific monitor configuration and see if this changes
anything?

This is not an automated message ;-)

Geir Ove

I can also see animated cursors flicker, including occasional scan
lines. I did not see them in Jaunty, unlike the reporter, but then again
I may simply have not noticed. This is not on a netbook but a (proper?)

I've attached my $(lspci -vvnn) and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 409440] Re: upstream compiled binaries built with executable stacks

2009-08-28 Thread C de-Avillez
AMD64, ATI x1250. Blank screen on restart, no response on
Ctrl/Alt/F[0-9], no response to Ctrl/Alt/Del. Did respond to pressing
the Power button, and powered off.

Although sounds bad, this is actually an improvement over the previous
versions -- machine would not respond at all.

You can't have accurate data for this until AMD releases a driver that
is compatible with karmic (currently none such exists).
