[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 424712] [NEW] [rv620] Karmic Alpha 5 resets the GPU repeatedly during bootup, then freezes

Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel
Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel

I created a LiveUSB of Karmic Alpha 5 using usb-creator with persistent
storage, and rebooted into it. It gets into Xorg and shows a loading
screen with a brown background and a moving white line in the center.
Then, the screen flashes six times, the line stops moving, and the
computer freezes up. Ctrl-Alt-Fx no longer works, and the only way I can
get it to respond is with Alt-SysRq-REISUB.

I extracted the relevant logfiles by mounting the persistent storage
file, and will attach them. The end of /var/log/messages (attached)
shows [drm] Resetting GPU six times, which would explain the six
screen flashes. I also have six Xorg.x.log files, which I'll attach
next.

Actually, the Xorg logs appear to be virtually identical, so I'll just
attach Xorg.0.log. Let me know if you'd like the rest.

2009-09-05 Thread Onno Timmerman
No the computer keeps working. You here sound etc and can switch back to
laptop and later try again go the 24

Als somethimes I notice that there is a trail, some sort transparancy of
the desktop when switcing back and forth. Everthing works but all
windows when moved leave a trail behind. I'm not sure if its related to
the switch bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 420143] Re: Crash on opening new document/new application [ooo-writer]

2009-09-05 Thread Mjateznik
Your wondering if I can reproduce the bug under Karmic Koala 9.10? I
haven't upgraded to 9.10 yet and are probably waiting for 2009 - 10 for
that.

You want me to report on the conditions when the crash tends to occur.
As I mentioned in first post that was the first time this occured and I
haven't been abel to reproduce the crash with the same software running
- if you from earlier logs can give me input on which applications
should be running (it's likely I had applications running in backround
which I didn't think off).

I would be happy to help you with a backtracing - if you thinkg it
possible. I have ofcourse started and restarted my laptop a few times
since the 27th of august.

I would be glad to help if you give me directions to how.

Best regards,
Göran.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 422669] Re: [karmic] suspend to ram broken in kubuntu

2009-09-05 Thread Timo Jyrinki
I can confirm problematic composition manager on resumal using normal
Ubuntu.

For me, the screen seems to be hung. Problem can be solved by blindly
typing alt-f2 and metacity --replace or even compiz --replace. Not using
compiz seems to solve the issue as well, but also restarting compiz
seems to always work as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 424624] [NEW] Nvidia nonfree driver 173 will not install on Karmic Alpha 5

2009-09-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Fresh install on Karmic Alpha 5 - AGP FX5200 NVIDIA video card detected,
suggests installing the non-free driver, when you try to activate it, it
downloads the driver, but installation fails at the DKMS step.

On restart, X fails to load, as /etc/X11/xorg.conf has been modified to
use driver nvidia, without a successful install of the driver.

To start X, manual editing to use driver nv instead is necessary.

The problem is not DKMS itself.

It looks like the driver doesn't compile against the 2.6.31 and would
need to be patched to be supported.

I've just upgraded to hoary, and now I'm seeing something that looks a lot like
bug #8146: my windows key is no longer able to be assigned to keyboard
shortcuts, and the existing shortcuts I had that use it don't work anymore.

I've tried to use the altwin:super_win workaround described in comments 16 and
18 of #1390, but I get Error activating XKB configuration. The output of the
commands that error dialog suggests are:

and...@trogdor ~ $ xprop -root | grep XKB

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 423694] Re: session active, not inhibited, screen idle message

2009-09-05 Thread Alexander Sack
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 397839 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/397839

The tray icon was to inform the user that the problem is due to xorg.
this is not a gpm bug. it has been fixed in gpm.

Right. But as of now it does a pretty bad job of informing the user
about that.

I am a technical guy and had absolutely no clue that this was caused by
my regular screen flickering bug. I couldn't click on it and it took
precious space from my desktop. Also it talked about scary things and
didn't allow me to get more information. The URL was too long to
remember or type, so I didn't bother. Even if it was, I don't think that
displaying a mail thread url is the right way to educate end-users about
problems - especially if there is no workaround etc.

IMO, we shouldn't display it at all and should ensure that it does not
happen for other issues :). If there are ways to make it more useful
that would be fine too of course. But for this particular bug I don't
see how it can be use for the user.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 424755] Re: Radeon HD - fails to use DRI when ATI driver does

2009-09-05 Thread Tormod Volden
It is not really a bug. radeonhd defaults to DRI off and radeon defaults to DRI
on. You can add
 Option DRI on
in the Device section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf to enable DRI.

We expect DRI to be on by default in the radeonhd driver soon.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 402178] Re: gzopen64 implicitly converted to pointer

2009-09-05 Thread Alexander Sack
afaiui chromium developers more or less say we were wrong with this
patch:

fta agl, http://paste.ubuntu.com/265190/
fta agl, i don't get why -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 alone doesn't work, the test
is #if defined(_LARGEFILE64_SOURCE) || _FILE_OFFSET_BITS == 64
agl fta: I think the zlib header is in error
agl fta: the *64 functions and types are only enabled by _LARGEFILE64_SOURCE
agl fta: however, we have _FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64, which switches the normal
functions to 64-bit mode
agl fta: but the zlib header is referencing off64_t even in the case that
only _FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 is defined

Is there another approach we could use?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 209911] Re: [Hardy] Mousing from one screen to another with tablet doesn't work any more

2009-09-05 Thread Kay
I have no karmic installed, but I could repoduce it with the Alpha 5
karmic-desktop-amd64 live system after installing the nvidia drivers.

I also tried to compile the 0.8.4-1 release of linuxwacom myself using
the --enable-quirk-tablet-rescale configure option, but I think i did
something wrong, because after rebooting the tablet was mapped relative
(instead of absolut) and the height of the screens was mapped to half
the height of the tablet. This way the aspect ratio was correct, but it
was not the right option to make the cursor stick to one screen and
switch to the other one, when crossing the border.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 420406] Re: intel: resume from suspend causes problems and freeze

2009-09-05 Thread Tomas Vojnar
It seems I have similar problems on my HP6930p despite I am not sure it
is the same thing. About a week ago, all used to work fine. Now, after
an update of the system to the latest version, if I suspend and resume,
the screen seems OK for a second while I still see the dialog box with
the reboot/suspend/hibernate buttons (which was used for suspending the
machine). Then this dialog disappears, but also the frames of the
windows disappear, and---interestingly---also all terminal windows
disappear (though they still remain listed at the bottom of the screen).

compiz is still running but it is in some strange mood: Sometimes my
mouse works (despite not always) and if I click to the place where the
frame should be, I can get the menu for moving a window, etc.

Sometimes I manage to resolve the situation by manually killing
compiz.real and compiz-decorator from a console and by starting
compiz.real with the same parameters with which it is listed by ps ax
before killing it. Sometimes, however, this does not work or leads to
some strange troubles later (the number of workspaces decreases, the
tapping with touchpad gets disabled, the system freezes completely after
a while).

Response #9 on bug 391768 gives a ppa that provides properly updated
nvidia 96 drivers. Worked on my athlon classic, at least. Give that a
try. Granted, it appears that the powers that be are taking
considerable time to work the fix into the main repositories, but at
least a workable solution has been provided.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 421736] Re: Compiz locks up on resume from suspend (intel)

2009-09-05 Thread Kevin Mehall
I encountered this bug on a Dell Studio 15 (Intel i965) using Jaunty
with the xorg-edgers PPA and kernel, acpi-support, pm-utils, and compiz
backported from Karmic. The Karmic daily livecd also has this issue.

Downgrading libgl1-mesa-dri to 7.5-1ubuntu1 as Martin Albisetti
suggested on bug #419264 seems to be a workaround. I've done several
suspend-resume cycles and it hasn't crashed.

The package is available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/amd64/libgl1-mesa-dri/7.5-1ubuntu1

I haven't tried the kernel patch that's also supposed to fix bug #419264, but I
can once it's included in Karmic.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 305586] Re: continuous [driAllocateTexture:636] even when idle

2009-09-05 Thread Uwe Geuder
Sorry about the delay, too many things ongoing...

Tried with Karmic Alpha 5 LiveCD. There are no continuous log writings
with normal desktop effects.

(Is logging active in LiveCD enviroment???)

Double checked with my current Intrepid installation: continuous log
writings do still occur as originally reported.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 419434] Re: X server fails with DRI : drmRadeonCmdBuffer: -22

2009-09-05 Thread Dave Lentz
Mesa 7.6 has the new r600 DRI driver (with 3D hardware acceleration).
AFAIK, this driver still needs special DRM kernel modules (from Alex
Deucher's branch of DRM: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~agd5f/drm/?h=r6xx-
r7xx-3d ).

If you want to test this out, try mesa 7.6 again and temporarily move
the file /usr/lib/dri/r600_dri.so Now when you start X, mesa should fall
back to using the DRI software rasterizer (check glxinfo) and your
system should work normally.

You could also build your own DRM, though the r600 DRI probably isn't
ready for stable use. If you want to experiment, see:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1257453

Note that this bug is probably a duplicate or very closely related to:

Anyway, confirm, it works now.
Maybe, it's time to merge this PPA to karmic?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 374780] Re: [RV250] thinkpad t40 with ati radeon rv 250 (M 9000) freezes

2009-09-05 Thread Martin Spacek
I have an IBM Thinkpad T41 with an ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 (rv 250). I
can't say I've noticed this problem in Ubuntu 9.04, but I just tried
booting from the 9.10 alpha5 karmic livecd (off a USB stick), and the
system always locks up within a minute or so of booting. I noticed a
little bit of video corruption in a couple of spots on the screen. I
don't even have enough time to run dmesg. I just tried looking on the
usb stick, and even though user settings should be getting saved to it,
I don't see any copy of Xorg*.log anywhere. Or for that matter, any
normal looking linux filesystem.

It's possible this lockup is due to my hard drive setup: I have a grey
market ultrabay adapter which converts SATA signals to IDE. I have a
SATA drive in there, plus I also have a normal IDE drive in the normal
drive slot.

That said, in the first 30 sec after booting from the usb stick, I've
noticed that gnome seems much more responsive than before, even with
compiz enabled (which is the default). This is very exciting! Keep up
the good work!

2009-09-05 Thread Saïvann Carignan
In my case, installing fglrx 9.8 from the amd website (after
uninstalling ubuntu fglrx driver in restricted driver manager) did the
trick. Xorg no longer freeze when playing a video and it correctly
resume from suspend. So this might be fixed in karmic or next release,
once ubuntu will add latest fglrx in repositories.
