I am re-opening this bug. It still exists in Jaunty. I just bought a Wacom Bamboo and the bug occurs right out of the box. I have separate X screens, just like the original reporter. My secondary monitor is to the left of my primary one though so the accessible regions are reversed: the right half of the primary is accessible and the left half of the secondary, but not the rest. I literally just plugged in the tablet and this bug was there, so everything is set to the default. The last update from Alberto seems to be saying to turn on TwinView, but that's not a valid fix for me. Separate X screens and TwinView are very different and there are reasons to prefer one over the other. For example, separate X screens gives you a second gnome panel and also gives correct sync-to-vblank behaviour on the secondary monitor, which is essential for my home theater set-up. On a Karmic installation, you can add the option to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub (after quiet and splash). If your system is upgraded from Jaunty, it still uses an older Grub version and you need to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst. Note that this is a workaround and not a fix, and that the UMS option is likely to be removed in the future (hopefully only when bugs like this have been fixed). It would be nice if you could add the ModeDebug option described above and attach the resulting Xorg.0.log here, since that will tell us how the monitor detection works with UMS. The problem seems to be that with KMS the driver thinks that no monitors are attached. I have already tried to reproduce with alpha-6, AMD64, live session, and the problem was not seen. For other reasons, alpha-6 is not a good working environment for me yet, so I will just be careful what I do in Jaunty. I tried this with a fresh CD of Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 6. The driver is working considerably better with compiz and rotation than its Jaunty counterpart. However, the video issue is still there. I played the .ogg video from example content in Totem on the rotated display, and the output was not rotated. Surely FreeNX is faster, but it can't be seen as a solution since it serves a whole other task. You have been subscribed to a public bug: I could use the Koala Karmic until Alpha 3 version. After an update around 2 or 3 September and could not return to the desktop. At the password screen, write the password, but could not enter, the screen stayed black and went back to the password screen. Until then everything worked, except 3D acceleration graphics card. The Palimset constantly told me that one of my hard drives is damaged, something also happened when I used the Fedora Live disk but the disk is working properly. The same indication of failed hard drive, I get an Acer Aspire One mini laptop where if I could get into the meeting with the desktop version of KK Alpha 5. Moreover Alpha 3 version worked properly. Now with the Alpha 5 version, I can not enter the desktop using the Live CD, the system freezes on the startup screen, using the version of 32bit and 64bit, in the two is the same. It freezes the screen and the system does not boot. I have not installed the Alpha 5 version because it probably occurs as with the Live Cd. The svn driver is now working the same well/bad as the one that comes with jaunty. The problem that was earlier in svn, that made openchrome to not work at all is solved. The problem with the mouse cursor inside of a GIMP image is not solved. So, the original bug is still there. In Jaunty: 1. Everything works almost perfectly until Gimp is started and a new picture is created and the mouse cursor is moved inside of it. Then the whole X.org system hangs. It is possible for some time to log in through SSH but after some time the system locks up completely. NoAccel is solving the problem but the computer is then unacceptable slow. Same problem appears sometimes with Wine. 2. A lot of green lines appears on the screen if I switch to a text console with Ctrl+Alt+F1 and then back to X (Ctrl+Alt+F7). By upgrading to the driver from Karmic, this problem disappears. But still this is not solving my first bug. In Hardy: The Via driver is not working at all with this computer. I have a G550 video-card and got the same error message after updating my debian-testing on 14 Sep 2009. To get the Xserver working again, I deleted the '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' and restarted the window-manager. After that, both screens were working again, but showing the same contents. While searching for a solution I soon found this thread, but it took me one week of further investigation to get both screens back working as they done it before the update. Since I have Debian, not Ubuntu, none of the repositories here could help me, so I had to bite the bullet and build the driver from source with the patches from Andy MacLean. For other Debians who are stranded here with the same problem: 1.Load the source package from: http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/x/xserver-xorg-video-mga/xserver-xorg-video-mga_1.4.11.dfsg.orig.tar.gz 2.Extract the the file (tar -xzf). 3.cd into the directory as root. 4.'apt-get install xserver-xorg-dev libdrm-dev x11proto-xf86dri-dev x11proto-gl-dev libgl1-mesa-dev' 5.'./configure' 6.'make' (to see if the original can be compiled) 7.Edit the files 'mga_driver.c' and 'mga.h' on the basis of Andy's third patch. (I don't know if automatic patching would work, because of the different line-numbers in the source). 8.'make' (to build the new driver) 9.'cp /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/mga_drv.so /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/mga_drv.so.old' (as a precaution) 10.'cp src/.libs/mga_drv.so /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers' (Attention: the Xserver will automatically restart !!) 11.
