2009-10-26 Thread Bartosz
To resolve this bug we need at least the xorg.0.log file.

Attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.
If you can from after reproducing this issue (or /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old).

Try to run the Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty and check if this error still exists

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 292331] [NEW] Tablet doesn't work after upgrade to 8.10

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

QuadPen Tablet - worked fine using wacom drivers on Ubuntu 8.04. After
upgrade to 8.10 it stopped working. I have uncommented lines in
xorg.conf which show how it was configured before:

Uncommenting them causes XServer to crash (Ubuntu will stop on Checking

screen error). The tablet works best with above settings (Threshold 1

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456075] Re: package nvidia-glx-173-dev 173.14.20-0ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 2

2009-10-26 Thread Jason Cornez
As /usr/lib/libGL.so is just a symlink, I noted down the destination and
then removed /usr/lib/libGL.so. After this the aptitude upgrade for the
package succeeds. Turns out the new link is identical to the old one,
so it was only a case of the script being confused somehow.

Nothing more needed here by me.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 292331] Re: Tablet doesn't work after upgrade to 8.10

2009-10-26 Thread Magnes
Still here. My tablet (ACECAD clone) is not working on fresh Ubuntu 9.10
installation. I can move the cursor but when I click on something nothing
happens. It uses ACECAD drivers.
I'll switch manually to wacom drivers and edit the xorg.conf (adding the
uncommented lines) later and it will probably work. But it would be great if it
worked out of the box.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 429419] Re: xorg.conf needs to be reconfigured at each reboot

2009-10-26 Thread Xy
Last update until the problem is solve ...

I think i found something worth interest.

Today, i installed the fglrx driver from the repositories of Kubuntu
9.10 RC and it installed well. Then after i reboot i logged normally and
then i had to setup the correct screen resolution. No big deal so far
but when i reboot same problem as before. But i reboot again and choose
the normal boot instead of the recovery mode i wanted. During the boot,
a routine file system check has been performed automaticly (i think it
is performed automaticly after a certain amount of boot) and then resume
to the rest of the boot process. SURPRISE ! I had my graphic back !!!
But my joy was short because when i had to reboot the problem shown up
again.

I wanted to see if it was just a lucky shot or it was something else so
i reboot lots of times until the file system check was performed again
and guess what? Yes, i had my graphic back again ! There is something in
that file system check that seems to repair somehow the problem but not
permanently just until the next reboot. I don't know much about
programming but i'd bet it has something to do with the use (or no use)
of the xorg.conf file by Kubuntu 9.10.

Maybe it's a good clue or maybe not, as i said i'm not a programmer but
the fact everything return to normal after the automatic file system
check, even if it only solved my problem until i reboot, i think it
might worth investigating.

Sorry for my english, it's not my primary language.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 445936] Re: xrandr --output VGA no longer fixes display

2009-10-26 Thread Sam Barker
I have a similar problem. When I dock my laptop at work its connected to
a pair of external monitors which for some reason I've needed a shell
script to configure them. However at some point in the karmic release
cycle the script stopped working. The DVI output doesn't change
resolution and the VGA output never enables. However if I do the
equivalent steps through gnome-display-properties it works.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 283128] Re: Keyboard indicator shows additional layout null

2009-10-26 Thread Daniel Lublin
I have a system where a user has Lithuanian, Russian, and USA layouts. On a
reboot, an additional Ltu2 (2 in subscript) appears. When I remove it, it comes
back on the next reboot. I did not investigate much more than actually finding
this bug, which kind of seems related.
No functional problems, except that it's annoying.

Using a freshly installed Jaunty system, which was immediately fully
upgraded to Karmic. The problem began a few days after we began to use
this new system.

Any clues... could it be the same bug somehow?

I installed Xubuntu 9.10 beta from the Xubuntu beta installation disc.

In the beginning everything was working fine. But after some time (maybe
after changing resolution via Settings - Display) I have difficulties
logging into X. This takes between 1 or 5 login tries.

Along with that problem I lost the xfce-panel, which I worked around

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 459753] Re: No notification on IBM Thinkpad X31 (Karmic)

2009-10-26 Thread Martin Reiche
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 429295 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/429295

As I have the same problem I will answer:
the IBM X31 comes with a radeon 7000 (r100 m6ly).

The XAA-codepath in Xorg video-drivers is unmaintained by now and will not
likely to see any further work. On such systems EXA should be enabled.
Without making changes to xorg.conf 9.10 RC starts per default with XAA
enabled. If XAA is not maintained anymore this should be changed soewhere?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 283128] Re: Keyboard indicator shows additional layout null

2009-10-26 Thread Paulus
It looks like the same bug, and the patch will not work for you because
it doesn't solve the problem: it simply gets rid of the symptoms for
users with two three-level layouts (and you have three).

You may run setxkbmap on startup to get rid of the extra layout
automatically (i.e. put it in gnome session startup) or even assign it
to some key combination if the layout keeps appearing after pressing
multimedia keys.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 460306] [NEW] X crashes when changing to xinerama mode while compiz is enabled

2009-10-26 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I have a notebook with intel 945 graphic adapter, internal 1024*768 screen and
an external 1280*1024 LCD.
Compiz runs well in clone mode, also xinerama works when compiz is disabled.
The problem occurs with every user (also with a newly created one).

When compiz is running and I try to change from clone- to xinerama-mode
using gnome-display-properities, the screen becomes black, only the mice
is visible and working. When I kill X with Alt-Print-K, on my notebook
screen gdm appears, but on the external screen there are only grey
vertical stripes and the cloned mice. This behavior is visible after
login, too. However, after I logged out again, it works fine.

If I disable desktop-effects and enabled xinerama afterwards, xinerama
works. If I try to enable desktop-effects again, I receive a message box
containing Die Desktop-Effekte konnten nicht aktiviert werden..

The problem is reproducible, so feel free to ask further questions.

In Karmic, the options have changed a little bit. I have an alert sound
set in sound preferences. Firefox, Transmission and Terminal no longer
use de PC speaker, but now the don't beep at all...

I guess this bug should be marked fixed and another bug opened for the
new behaviour?

I attach the requested informations altough I don't think they are

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 459322] [NEW] gnome-display-properties/xrandr crashes X server when loading after pluging an external display

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

xserver-xorg: 1:7.4+3ubuntu7
xserver-xorg-video-intel: 2:2.9.0-1ubuntu2
libxrandr2: 2:1.3.0-2

How to reproduce the bug:
start your computer (laptop) without any external display plugged in.
Let your Gnome session starts.
plug the VGA cable in.
launch gnome-display-properties.

What's happening:
X crashes (freeze).

relevant Xorg.0.log entries: (at the end of the file)

(II) intel(0): Allocate new frame buffer 2704x1050 stride 4096

What strikes me is that the intel driver is told to allocate a 2704*1050 FB
whereas specs available at
http://www.intel.com/design/mobile/specupdt/309220.htm page 375 state that
maximum resolution is 2048x1536.

What's expected:
Well, the gnome-display-properties window is expected.

More information:
-Starting X with the external display already plugged in works, ie: I can
launch gnome-display-properties.
-if you reproduce the bug process and change the call to
gnome-display-properties by a call to xrandr, same bug occurs

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 383345] Re: [i945GM] dual screen not working with virtual resolution enabled: just a blank screen with a mouse pointer

2009-10-26 Thread jayprakash
A college just updated to karmic.
he has i965GM
Compiz working perfectly on 2048x768 and 2304x1024

So this is only i915/i945 chipset problem.

@Viktor
If I'm not mistaken, Virtual line is in KMS mode (default in karmic)
irrelevant.
Kernel is now managing resolutions, not xserver, and according to hardware
abilities.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461014] [NEW] X crashes with video overlay on secondary screen (ATI X600)

2009-10-26 Thread Oliver Joos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeon

After a fresh install of 9.10 Karmic release candidate I see crashes
of X I never saw before with Karmic alpha, Jaunty or earlier. I use a
Laptop HP Compaq nx8220 and an external CRT monitor right of it. When
dragging a video-playing totem window to the secondary screen, X crashes
immediately and gdm restarts.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 429048] Re: KDE4 Snow and desktop cube messes the screen

2009-10-26 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi fl-blade,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this
issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399746] Re: DRI fails to initialize when KMS is enabled with radeon driver

2009-10-26 Thread Alex Wauck
I no longer have access to the machine that had this problem, so I
cannot do any further tests. Given Fedora's push for KMS, I suspect
this problem has been fixed upstream.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 455601] Re: [M7] (32MB) notification messages are not readable

2009-10-26 Thread Jan-Philipp Litza
Hi, I had the same problem. I switched to EXA, as using a smaller Virtual
screen or color dpeth isn't really a solution (I use a dual-head setup with one
22 display and don't want to miss half the colors). EXA solved the problem of
unreadable notifications, but messed up display performance (as discussed in
#363238 [though that discussion targeted on Jaunty]).
I'm quite at a loss now, as unreadable notifications are not a nice thing, but
having to wait several seconds until Firefox (or any other program) scrolls a
few rows is unbearable as well. This clearly is a regression from Jaunty as
there, XAA worked like a charm.

(using Thinkpad T30 with ATI Radeon M7 LW, like the author)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461044] [NEW] [GM45] Compiz is sluggish but glxgears runs at 1160 fps

2009-10-26 Thread DervishD
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I know, glxgears is not a benchmark, but to me is strange that glxgears
runs at 1160 but using Desktop wall, Ring switcher or Desktop cube
is intolerably slow as soon as more than three windows are on the
screen, specially when the plugin is started . For example, if I use the
Ring or Flip switchers, the first time the animation is jerky, VERY
jerky, and smooths a bit after that, but not much. Desktop wall is
almost unusable due to the jerkiness of the animation if the window
previews are active.

On the other hand, video works OK. Well, it flickers due to another
known problem with Intel cards, but compiz not only flickers, it is
jerky too.

This happens in an Acer Aspire 5735 laptop with 4GB of RAM and a T5800
CPU, using Jaunty amd64.

I would say that the problem is that the video card uses shared memory,
but currently 256M are assigned:

~$ sudo lspci -v -s 00:02.0
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device 0176
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 2295
Memory at f800 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4M]
Memory at d000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
I/O ports at 1800 [size=8]
Capabilities: [90] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit- Queue=0/0
Enable+
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 3

Disabling Sync to vblank in compiz configuration doesn't help, and I
don't dare tweaking with driconf, at least as the first resort.

Is there anything I can tweak or test to improve compiz performance?
Currently I'm just disabling as many effects as possible.

ProblemType: Bug

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 459512] Re: X server aborts if two primary devices found

2009-10-26 Thread Steve Langasek
Mark,

Is it possible for you to confirm whether plugging the monitor into the
other card does cause the crash with white?

If the currently available fix is only going to correct the problem for
any given user 50% of the time, I think we should wait to be able to
address this fully and fix it via SRU. A reupload of xorg-server at
this point is going to set back CD validation, leaving us very little
margin for dealing with any other issues that show up and necessitate a
respin of media.

Though of course, not getting this fix in for final release does mean
that the live CD will not work on this hardware without fiddling.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 371066] Re: xorg key events not registering causing missed keypresses and sticking key repeats

Standard SCIM. Assuming I did everything right it still does it with
ibus.

I installed ibus, chewing, and the gtk/qt parts, started the daemon and
ran:

QT_IM_MODULE=ibus konsole

I assume it worked right because I didn't get the error about the daemon
not running that I did the first time I tried.

ibus documentation seems a little lacking.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461107] [NEW] 1) monitor settings not saved properly and 2) 'main monitor' setting missing using nvidia-settings in 9.10 RC

2009-10-26 Thread ViktigLemma
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

I have a Dell laptop with an external monitor. I have made a clean 9.10
beta install that has been updated to RC

1) Using Separate X screen configuration, when I set the laptop monitor
to be 'right of' and the external monitor to be 'absolute', save to
xorg.conf, and log in and out again, this setting does not take effect.
When I check the display configuration again, it is the laptop monitor
that is 'absolute' and the external monitor is now 'right of' - the
opposite of what I tried to configure.

2) Furthermore, the 'left of' and 'right of' setting do not matter
anyway, because the two screens are independent. In 9.04 only one screen
(the 'main monitor') would have the menu bar and I could move windows
between the two monitors as if they were one big monitor. Now I can't do
that, and also the option to select 'main monitor' is gone.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461014] Re: X crashes with video overlay on secondary screen (ATI X600)

2009-10-26 Thread Oliver Joos
Thanks for the quick response!

Further symptoms:
Strange is that the first time after a (re)start of X it works. But when
closing totem, waiting a few seconds, starting it again and dragging its window
to the right then X crashes as soon as the video content is supposed to jump to
the secondary screen.

Further config details:
I disabled Compiz and did not enable KMS (Kernel Mode Setting). I assume the
default xorg.conf uses VideoOverlay (and not TexturedVideo) because when it
works the first time I see no horizontal size limit of 1536 or 1920 (typical
for TexturedVideo).

Merged 3 duplicates (bug #450888, bug #456998, bug #457086) into this

This bug doesn't seem so hardware-specific (or even hardware-related in
any way) now.

And letting this bug slip through into the release version of Karmic
will create even *more* stray duplicate bugs. :(

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 459512] Re: X server aborts if two primary devices found

2009-10-26 Thread Mark Shuttleworth
On 26/10/09 12:55, Steve Langasek wrote:

Interestingly, it did not cause a crash. So, white worked in the case
where the monitor was connected to the card it picked, and it did not
crash when the monitor was connected to a different card.

More interestingly, though, the monitor stayed completely dark when it
was connected to the other card. The BIOS and boot sequence just didn't
display at all. It's as if the top card (the one picked by white) is
used at POST. I don't know if that's just luck, or if it's some
convention in the BIOS, or how this is generally determined, but trying
to boot with the monitor connected any other way just shows nothing.

The machine does boot, however, so I captured a Xorg log for that case.
It shows no crash, but it shows that there were no connected monitors.
Interestingly, plugging a monitor in after the boot did not bring
anything up on that monitor.

I don't think this provides enough new insight to decide what the likely
impact of the patch is on the average dual-card system, or other systems.

Mark

2009-10-26 Thread Ivos
Thanks and understand.
Actually that is the problem with Linux generally and the point I believe
Ubuntu can push the opensource world a big step ahead. The manufacturers need a
strong partner speaking with clear words and having some reasonable number of
customers behind it.
What I would expect from Ubuntu and that is actually the only one but very big
blame. There is written in hardware driver part of menu, that the fglrx driver
ais tested by Ubuntu developers and when I use it, it crashes computer to total
death (anything except hard reset doesn't work). Actually I am not developer,
but I would expected from a good system, that there could be black screen but
I will be still able to control the system by keyboard and maybe get the
command line with the open-source driver or anything but not lose the data. ;-)

If Ubuntu should be for a normal people (manufacturers will have to take
claims more seriously) there should be tested with at least some HW and
ther should be a database, where I would be able to find HW with easy
getting knowledge if this HW is tested (It will work without any
problems) or at least which problems are facing the users. So I stupid
user can look in this DB and see, that ATI will not work with 3D, fglrx
driver has so many bugs (list) and look that these bugs were reported to
AMD months or years ago and response is fuck-off. Getting access to this
DB even from HW driver menu instead of note, that i was tested by Ubuntu
developers, AMD will get publicity, that already will wake them up. -
Anb I as a stupid user will look into the HW DB and buy card, which is
tested by Ubuntu. I as a user will be happy, because of my PC will not
crash and will tell everywhere, that Ubuntu is perfectly correct. With
correct I mean, that it not work perfect with any HW but will know, that
if I use the tested one, I will have NO problem. And I will buy it.

SORRY FO BEING SO LONG BUT WITHOUT DOING THIS, UBUNTU WILL NEVER BE FOR

2009-10-26 Thread Lukáš Chmela
Hi Ivos,

I totally share your excitement and of course I agree with you.
The hardware should be as functional as possible, however it will always
have a small number of bugs which has to be fixed. Nothing is bug-free,
neither in the Windows' world. And that's the reason to make new drivers
and solve old problems. The only confusing thing on this all is, that
this bug has been really let forgotten and nobody cares about it (that's
my view). The only thing we can do is to remind it to the original
developers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 290704] Re: [fglrx]Computer freeze when switching user

2009-10-26 Thread Lukáš Chmela
Hi folks,

I am the original reporter of this bug and of course, I'm still reading
this thread. I also sent a bug report on the official AMD site but I
didn't get any response from then, neither it was added into official
release notes as known bug. It is even more frustrating, that it remains
opened for almost a year (believing that the bug was here even earlier).

I finally realized, that it was just a crew feedback, not a bugreport
site.. well, I'm not very sure if I also filled a bugreport on the
unofficial AMD's bugzilla. I'll make sure and let you know then

Thanks a lot and hope for better results.
