With kernel 2.6.32rc7 and xorg-edgers' intel driver (2.9.0+git), I could switch to a console (tty1), and dump kernel messages after the GPU hang (and reboot properly). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 438000] Re: [i945gm] [karmic] X servers hangs when settings up dual monitor config
Ok I see, calling xrandr will by default expand the virtual screen as if the external monitor is right of LVDS, even if we directly call xrandr --output VGA1 --below LVDS. I tried with LVDS1=1280x800 and VGA1=1280x1024 (native resolutions, chosen by default). VGA1 at the right/left of LVDS1 will result in a frame buffer of 2560x1024 = greater than 2048 (i945's hardware limit), crash with compiz. VGA1 below/above LVDS1 will result in a frame buffer of 1280x1824 = Fits in 2048x2048 and works with compiz. Running xrandr --output VGA1 --below LVDS first creates a 2560x1024 frame buffer before creating the proper 1280x1824 frame buffer (seen in Xorg.0.log without compiz). Therefore, it will always crash with compiz enabled. However we can do it with metacity (compiz disabled), and then put back compiz (compiz.real --replace), it will work. In Xorg.0.log, after running the command given below: (II) intel(0): Allocate new frame buffer 2560x1024 stride 4096 (II) intel(0): Allocate new frame buffer 1280x1824 stride 2048 If you have higher native resolutions for LVDS and/or external monitor, there is currently no solution with compiz. Conclusion: The problem is that xrandr and gnome-display-properties will systematically setup the external monitor next to the LVDS, without checking if it's possible. Those tools should not do this if hardware does not allow it. The problem is that those tools are not aware that compiz is running (which reduces the hardware limit to 2048x2048), and so try to create the too large frame buffer (which is legal without compiz). -- [i945gm] [karmic] X servers hangs when settings up dual monitor config https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/438000 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 474045] Re: [Karmic] No middle key emulation with synaptics touchpad
It's button 2, so it makes sense for it to be on 2 fingers, and to make it easier to middle-tap than right-tap because (almost?) no touchpad has a real middle button, but most have a right button. So obviously somebody decided it would be better to be consistent with Windows at the expense of true consistency and usability :-(. Of more concern is that someone decided to disable middle-tapping altogether for touchpads which don't support multiple fingers. IMO the capplet should be extended so you can use it to configure how button 2 and 3 are emulated with taps. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled
@ Prabhakar Nagral, did this work for you? @ José Tomás Atria I can confirm that switching off fglrx power saving takes care of the problem for me. Further I have found that it only affects me if I boot with power saving enabled. If I boot with power saving off, then turn it on from Catalyst I don't have the leak. If I neglect to switch it off before turning the computer off, then the next time I boot up the memory leak will be present. This can be alleviated at that time by turning power saving off. One issue is that I now have: [fglrx:fireglAsyncioIntEnableMsgHandler] *ERROR* interrupt source ff66 is not supported on this hardware (return code = 1) showing up in my syslog when I boot, and on moving the mouse after issuing the command sleep 1 xset dpms force off via terminal. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 480891] Re: [G45] Xorg does not use full resolution of monitor (Intel)
Thank you for testing. This means that it is probably already fixed in Lucid, which has a kernel based on 2.6.32-rc7. It would be nice if you could test a alpha-1 LiveCD which should be out on Dec. 10 just to verify that. Or you could test a daily-build right now, but that is more likely to have other problems. As for updating Karmic, I doubt that is will be possible. We would have to find the exact patch that fixes the issue, patch the current Karmic kernel, test the Karmic kernel and request a SRU (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates). Since this is probably affecting only a few types of monitors, I don't think it will be worth it. -- [G45] Xorg does not use full resolution of monitor (Intel) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/480891 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in
Adam, there code that decides the resolution is different with KMS (it is in the kernel) than with UMS (nomodeset, it is in the -intel driver). There have been a number of problems with this, and many have been solved in the new kernel (2.6.32). But let's focus on the freezes here. On some similar freezes on i855 it was suggested to use xorg-edgers and an option to flush the debug cache in order to get better batchbuffer dumps. See bug 447892, comment 23. Unlike Albert Damen I do not know how to read batchbuffer dumps, but I can imagine that it would be easier for the developers to make sense of it with that option on. -- [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/456902 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 482698] [NEW] Proprietary nvidia drivers fail to set resolution size properly on geforce4 chipset
Public bug reported: This is the same computer in the bug https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics- drivers-96/+bug/332048 except, but I am filing a new report because it is now the 185 driver, not 96 and Ubuntu 9.10 instead of 8.10. The display is 1024x768 when I know my LCD monitor can display 1280x1024 (I've been using it for years). Plus, the display was 1280x1024 when it was using the free/open nvidia driver prior to the proprietary one. So it seems that this problem is still not fixed. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 482715] [NEW] disabling modesetting with dirver intel makes the mouse pointer disappear in gnome
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Because of bug #462939, I have to disable modesetting using passing with grub the option nomodeset for the kernel. If this is a workaround for bug #462939, it has some weird side effects, among them the fact that _after_ the logging, when I end up to the Gnome desktop, my mouse pointer is invisible (but exists, one can see icons being selected a.s.o.). The cursor is visible during the logging. So I do not really know if the bug is intel driver or gnome... If I switch to a TTY and back to TTY7, then the pointer is visible again. If I remove the nomodeset option, then pointer is always there. This bug is not a major bug, since switching to TTY and back to desktop does the trick and because if #462939 is fixed, then it will disappear, it is a little bit annoying. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477256] Re: [i855] Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM)
Irihapeti, in bug 447892 comment 23 it was suggested to use xorg-edgers with the option DebugFlushCaches. Could you use that for your batchbuffer dump, since it will most likely make it easier for the developers to make sense of it. Also, except for the batchbuffer dump, we prefer to have files attached separately and not in an archive. That makes it much easier to look at them through the web interface. It would be nice if you could copy /var/log/Xorg.0.log at the same time as you are making the batchbuffer dump (when you are logged in via SSH and the computer is frozen). ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel After installing Xubuntu Karmic on this laptop, I'm having regular Xserver lockups, as in once per session. The mouse pointer still moves, but clicking does nothing and the keyboard is disabled. I can use the Alt-SysRq-REISUB commands, but the reboot that follows doesn't complete. The only way to clear this is by a complete power-down. The time before the freeze occurs varies but would usually be less than 15 minutes. I have tried using the standard Xserver-xorg-video-intel with DRI disabled, and a retro version of the same package, but the problem persists. Also tried adding nomodeset to the kernel command line when booting, which likewise made no difference. Hardy has run without issue on this machine, and as far as I can tell, Jaunty also. (I ran it for an hour or more from the live CD without problems.) The batchbuffer dump archive is attached. I reinstalled the standard Xserver-xorg-video-intel package for this test. + + PS: This was spun off from bug 447892, since it doesn't seem to be the + same freeze. -- [i855] Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/477256 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

kalessin, at bug 476817 which is another freeze bug on 855GM, it is reported that adding acpi=off on the kernel command line makes the freezes go away. Could you check if this is the case for you as well? You other guys, we know that you also have freeze problems, but please don't report your own findings here. It is already difficult to filter out what symptoms kalessin has, and it gets more difficult the more people posts here. Please only post here if you have suggestions for what kalessin may try or it is otherwise relevant for his case. If you are totally convinced that you have the exact same bug and want to report your findings, it is actually better if you file your own bug report and mark it as a duplicate of this. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477256] Re: [i855] Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM)
Have I got that right? Almost... So, if I understand correctly, I need to install the .deb from the ppa, The xorg-edgers is made so that the packages depend on each other in the right way. So while it may work to only install the xserver-xorg-video-intel .deb from the ppa, it may happen that it doesn't (if the xorg-server in the PPA is too new compared to the one in Karmic, for example). The way it is meant is to add the PPA to /etc/apt/sources.list and then do a `sudo apt-get update` and a `sudo apt-get dist-upgrade`. It used to be quite cumbersome to back out again, but now there is the ppa-purge script in there that does that easily (`sudo apt-get install ppa-purge` to get it after having xorg-edgers). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 455628] Re: Open source drivers rotate textures on ATI Xpress 200M under wine
One last post. I have tested the ATI OSS drivers on the Intrepid 32bit Live CD and they worked great. Even better than Karmic. The performance was also good and all textures showed up normally. I am certain that the 64bit ones on that distribution still did not work for me. So the problem seems to be with the architecture. The drivers for the ATI R300 series in 64bit have obvious problems with 32bit 3D access. I suspect it may be a failure to restore some 64bit register before running the 32bit code. -- Open source drivers rotate textures on ATI Xpress 200M under wine https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/455628 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
