[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 488627] [NEW] X server crashed while clicking in Eclipse
Public bug reported: X server suddenly crashed. Configuration including vmware player has worked for several months. Did not do anything unusual as such. May be caused by running out of memory as I had both Eclipse and IntelliJ IDEA and vmware player up at the same time. Stacktrace from X process is present in logfile which is attached to this bug. For long I have a complete set of ubuntu drivers on my site for this board with ful instructions, I just didn't compile the latest 32-bit driver, check: http://ajoliveira.com/ajoliveira/uk/software/xorg.php or if anybody prefers it in Portuguese: http://ajoliveira.com/ajoliveira/pt/software/xorg.php If somebody really needs the 32-bit driver for 9.10, I wil compile it, but the 9.04 one should work. The problem disappears when I shut down the dropbox client and kill the nautilus processes spawned by it. I guess the best solution for this would be for the dropbox people to make a desktop-independent client. It's ok if nobody here wants to bother with this, feel free to close it. I still have this problem as well, under 9.10 it is even heavier than under ther earlier Uby's. With those verticalartefacts the system is just unworkable. The only workaround still is to use vesa graphics, without *any* hardware enhancement. (and that means incredibly slow graphics !) Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 469470] Re: proprietary nvidia driver does not work under karmic
--- On Wed, 11/25/09, Jay Gates jwg779-proje...@yahoo.com wrote: From: Jay Gates jwg779-proje...@yahoo.com Subject: [Bug 469470] Re: proprietary nvidia driver does not work under karmic To: lenc5...@sbcglobal.net Date: Wednesday, November 25, 2009, 11:58 PM Leonard: I have all of the nvidia*185* packages installed, and my card is listed as supported. All packages installed without issue, the module built successfully, etc. If I knew how to get more information about why the module was not loading, that would be helpful. I actually never get a low graphics mode message; kdm runs but X fails to start (aborts) because it can't load the nvidia driver. When I remove the xorg.conf file which nvidia-xconfig creates, X and KDM start correctly, using the NV driver. I haven't yet tried going through this involved procedure (which, of course, shouldn't be necessary) to install the latest one directly from NVidia: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3107406.0 So sorry to hear you haven't solved the issue. My Karmic install(fresh) still randomly will start in low graphics mode but can get to Xwindows using startx or sometimes just waiting before logging in; a real PITA and nuisance that I live with. It seems almost that the driver is not loaded on a timely basis. Just a wild ass guess but I wonder if adding a modprobe command for the module in question into rc.local might help. Wouldn't hurt to try it as it is easily removed from the cli. Sad, but Karmic still has a few bugs to be solved. Another thing I did was to remove all nvidia drivers except the *.185 but don't really know if that had any effect. JFYI, I only have these installed: i A nvidia-185-kernel-source i A nvidia-185-libvdpau i nvidia-185-modaliases i nvidia-glx-185 i A nvidia-settings i xserver-xorg-video-nv The first time I was able to boot up without the low graphics message, AIR, I got the message from nvidia-settings to run nvidia-xconfig(which I thought had been discredited and removed) and running it worked on the next boot. I had also rmed xserver-xorg-video-nv because I kept getting messages suggesting the nv driver was being used. I later put it back due to comments from NoOp. Just relating my comments which probably wont help. My card worked flawlessly on all versions of Ubuntu(GeForce 9400GT) up and until the last kernel upgrade which included upgrades of the nvidia drivers also. Sorry I couldn't be of any more help but sometimes you just have to do trial and error on the new releases and file bug reports. So, good luck with your efforts. ** Tags added: karmic ** Tags removed: intrepid ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sis Ubuntu's drivers for SiS video on the Intel D201GLY2 motherboard have known issues, namely that there is Vertical Noise on the screen. (It looks like it's displaying an incorrect pixel every time there's a write to video RAM). It happens on Ubuntu's stock drivers on both Hardy and Intrepid (haven't tried earlier versions). Intel has their driver source code available which fixes the issues, except while it would compile under Hardy, it won't compile under Intrepid, apparently due to using a different xorg API. I recently tried switching from Hardy to Intrepid. Before, I was able to use a binary driver which someone built for Hardy. But on Intrepid, the binary driver has the wrong ABI version, so it won't work. I ended up reverting back to Hardy. Is there any work going on at making this motherboard work? I briefly tried porting the code to the new API, but it was too complicated for me, considering that I know absolutely nothing about how to write xorg drivers. + + This problem is still present in Karmic, even a little worse than + earlier. ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sis Ubuntu's drivers for SiS video on the Intel D201GLY2 motherboard have known issues, namely that there is Vertical Noise on the screen. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486367] Re: RV280 Radeon 9200 pro Hardware not fully supported.
I am indeed using Karmic (9.10), I'm facing some freezing problems as well. especially when minimizing or maximizing a window. Sometimes I think it's the operating system that blocks, but it's actually the graphic card where the problem is. I've also tried to install proprietary drivers, but after following all the different steps and instructions, it doesn't even show up in the drivers menu. I tried Catalyst, I also tried to install a different driver that was made for my graphic card (downloaded from the website of ati/amd). What a horrific experience. When I rebooted my computer everything went black, I had to use the safe mode and needed to change something in a .conf file to mesa, in order to make it work again. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 416001] Re: Notification and similar dialogs are displaying corrupted after update on Karmic
I have a Compaq Evo N600c with ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY 32MB running with xubuntu 9.10 and can confirm that AccelMethod EXA fixes the drawing problems with the notifications. The big problem is that my system is still not stable with radeon module, i.e. after some time of 2-D usage (30min-2h) the system locks up (mostly soft-lockup). I used openSuse 11.1/2 before and could still get kernel debug messages/sysrq key responses via network debug. (in opensuse 11.0 I used fglrx, which was stable). So I use vesa most of the time, which is quite slow. To watch a movie or sth., I save my work and switch to the radeon module. To test if, an especially how stable the system is (for ex. with different xorg.conf options), I start etracer (extrem tux racer). It reliably locks up the system (didnt with fglrx some years ago). With no option quite fast in the startup menu, with EXA the menus seem more or less stable, though have drawing errors. I would be glad if someone can help me and tell me what and how to debug / whether to file a new bug report. -- Notification and similar dialogs are displaying corrupted after update on Karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/416001 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xserver-xorg-driver-ati. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 444674] Re: Mouse behaves strange on clicking in graphical environment
I have exactly the same problem on my DELL D600. I have been monitoring this page to see if a solution would be created, so I could switch to karmic. I have experimented a bit with disabling my touchpad using the xinput command, and through removing the appropriate xorg device driver module from the /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input folder. Both the xinput command, and removing the xorg device driver resulted in the same effect. The touchpad and it's buttons were disabled and the behavior of the track stick and it's buttons became better, but the middel mouse button (l+r at the same time) did not work. Also trying to resize a window it appeared that the mouse button only became activated after the movement had started, so the selection happened beside the window. Anyway this appeared not to be the solution. But I think I have found a good solution and I'm curious to know if it works for everybody. The trick seems to be, to change the settings for the mouse pointer in your BIOS: Choose for your pointing device the option PS/2 Mouse, instead of Touchpad - PS/2 mouse. Despite what you might expect from this, both the track stick and the touchpad work fine under Karmic after this BIOS modification on my DELL D600. -- Mouse behaves strange on clicking in graphical environment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/444674 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-evdev in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I've got the same bug on the same chipset. Am I right, that your system also useses the i915 driver (and not i845G)? Then the title of the bug is wrong and should be changed. The tag and title refers to chipset, not driver. You can find the chipset you are using with `lscpi -vvnn` or by looking for Chipset in Xorg.0.log. There are different names for the different drivers. The 2D driver used to be called i810, but is currently called intel. Then there is the i915 kernel module, i915 and i965 mesa 3D drivers, etc. Bugs often only occur on only one chipset even though the same driver is used (currently there are many reports of freezes with 845G and 855GM, but not many on 865G, 915G and 945G, for example, even though they use the same driver). -- [i845G] Display freezes (except for mouse pointer) without warning https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/484020 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

This is being caused by the xserver not getting damaged by the nvidia-restricted drivers. Linked bugs confirm this is not an issue on intel chipsets or nv driver. Notes: If you close and restart the vnc session, you get an updated snapshot but still no refreshes. Workarounds: Use the -noxdamage argument with vncviewer. This is really inefficient and bandwidth hungry since the whole screen refreshes. Kill compiz and use a different wm (metacity). This bug has been confirmed by many others with linked reports. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf
If I enable the fglrx driver, then I get a flashing console login screen and xwindows does not load when I reboot. In order to fix this, I have to delete xorg.conf; at which point, the console login screen stops flashing and I think xwindows begins to load automatically (i am not sure exactly/i forgot). I cannot watch 1080p movies well because of slowdowns, However when I do watch them, the subtitles sometimes flash and the artifacts of the screen/lighting flash. Thus, because of all the flashing, maybe this is related to refresh rate or something that goes bad. I am not sure nor how that would be related to amdpcsdb.default -- fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/440233 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
