[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 488627] [NEW] X server crashed while clicking in Eclipse

2009-11-26 Thread Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen
Public bug reported:

X server suddenly crashed. Configuration including vmware player has
worked for several months. Did not do anything unusual as such. May be
caused by running out of memory as I had both Eclipse and IntelliJ IDEA
and vmware player up at the same time.

Stacktrace from X process is present in logfile which is attached to
this bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 388467] Re: apport script to collect information about a gpu hang

2009-11-26 Thread Bryce Harrington
Updated the debdiff and applied for lucid. While it sounds like it may
not be 100% functional yet, I figure if we get it in lucid early it
gives us plenty of time to tweak it.

xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.9.0-1ubuntu4) lucid; urgency=low

  [Matt Zimmerman]
  * debian/apport-gpu-error-intel.py, debian/xserver-xorg-video-intel.udev:

  * control: Add intel-gpu-tools to Recommends for use by the above

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 332140] Re: sis 771/671 graphics board only works in vesa mode

2009-11-26 Thread Antonio J. de Oliveira
For long I have a complete set of ubuntu drivers on my site for this
board with ful instructions, I just didn't compile the latest 32-bit
driver, check:

http://ajoliveira.com/ajoliveira/uk/software/xorg.php

or if anybody prefers it in Portuguese:

http://ajoliveira.com/ajoliveira/pt/software/xorg.php

If somebody really needs the 32-bit driver for 9.10, I wil compile it,
but the 9.04 one should work.

I maintain this bug open because I believe this driver should be a part
of the kernel. Soon we will have to migrate to xorg 1.7, and the driver
should be recompiled, again...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 474917] Re: nvidia drivers 185.xx compile into kernel 2.6.28 instead of 2.6.31 on update from jaunty to karmic

2009-11-26 Thread TaxAlien
@Alberto Milone: well you can't do that because it is not a genuine
ubuntu package, so I am not sure how to proceed with it. I am not
familiar to the Ubuntu defect process and trying to raise something
directly on the website doesn't work.

Anyhow, the issue I posted appears to be the cause of the issues people
have to getting Nvidia (and probably other graphics cards) up and
running again.

Works with my Mobility Radeon 3650 HD pretty well. You may have to force

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 488698] [NEW] Task switcher leaves shadow on other screen

2009-11-26 Thread MarcS
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When using a dual-screen setup (KDE 4.3.2, nvidia, driver version
185.18.36, twinview) a shadow of the task switch panel (pressing
alt+tab and holding alt) is drawn on the screen the panel is not
displayed on. This shadow remains until the application underneath it is
completely redrawn.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 488698] Re: Task switcher leaves shadow on other screen

2009-11-26 Thread MarcS
As it turns out, this seems to be related to the dropbox client.

The dropbox client pulls in a lot of gnome dependencies (nautilus,
mainly), which seems to confuse KDE to some extend. The problem
disappears when I shut down the dropbox client and kill the nautilus
processes spawned by it.

I guess the best solution for this would be for the dropbox people to
make a desktop-independent client. It's ok if nobody here wants to
bother with this, feel free to close it.

Sorry for wasting your time.

2009-11-26 Thread reinhard
I still have this problem as well, under 9.10 it is even heavier than under
ther earlier Uby's.
With those verticalartefacts the system is just unworkable.

The only workaround still is to use vesa graphics, without *any* hardware
enhancement.
(and that means incredibly slow graphics !)

What is going wrong that this problem is not even noticed
(let alone being looked at :-[ )

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 469470] Re: proprietary nvidia driver does not work under karmic

To: lenc5...@sbcglobal.net

Leonard: I have all of the nvidia*185* packages installed, and my card
is listed as supported.  All packages installed without issue, the
module built successfully, etc.  If I knew how to get more information
about why the module was not loading, that would be helpful.  I actually
never get a low graphics mode message; kdm runs but X fails to start
(aborts) because it can't load the nvidia driver.  When I remove the
xorg.conf file which nvidia-xconfig creates, X and KDM start correctly,
using the NV driver.

I haven't yet tried going through this involved procedure (which, of
course, shouldn't be necessary) to install the latest one directly from
NVidia: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3107406.0

So sorry to hear you haven't solved the issue.  My Karmic install(fresh) still
randomly will start in low graphics mode but can get to Xwindows using startx
or sometimes just waiting before logging in; a real PITA and nuisance that I
live with.  It seems almost that the driver is not loaded on a timely basis.
Just a wild ass guess but I wonder if adding a modprobe command for the module
in question into rc.local might help.  Wouldn't hurt to try it as it is easily
removed from the cli.  Sad, but Karmic still has a few bugs to be solved.
Another thing I did was to remove all nvidia drivers except the *.185 but don't
really know if that had any effect.
JFYI, I only have these installed:
i A nvidia-185-kernel-source
i A nvidia-185-libvdpau
i   nvidia-185-modaliases
i nvidia-glx-185
i A nvidia-settings
i xserver-xorg-video-nv

The first time I was able to boot up without the low graphics message, AIR, I
got the message from nvidia-settings to run nvidia-xconfig(which I thought had
been discredited and removed) and running it worked on the next boot.  I had
also rmed xserver-xorg-video-nv because I kept getting messages suggesting the
nv driver was being used. I later put it back due to comments from NoOp.  Just
relating my comments which probably wont help.  My card worked flawlessly on
all versions of Ubuntu(GeForce 9400GT) up and until the last kernel upgrade
which included upgrades of the nvidia drivers also.
Sorry I couldn't be of any more help but sometimes you just have to do trial
and error on the new releases and file bug reports.
So, good luck with your efforts.

@Photon,

The Startup Applications synclient fix doesn't appear to survive on
resume from sleep (at least on a Macbook Pro).

Argh.

Also, it appears that you can put both fixes in one command:

synclient TapButton2=2 TapButton3=3

Status in “xserver-xorg-input-synaptics” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

Bug description:
Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

LSB version = karmic
Package version = 1.1.2-1ubuntu5

Expected behaviour:
Tap the touchpad with 2 fingers simultaneously to generate middle-click event.
Tap with 3 fingers for right-click event.

Observed behaviour:
A 2-finger tap generates a right-click event and a 3-finger tap generates a
middle-click event.

Looking at the changelog for 1.1.2-1ubuntu1 I see this:
105_correct_multifinger_click.patch: Swap the right/middle clicks generated by
multi-finger tapping.
This patch is then reverted in 1.1.2-1ubuntu2:
105_correct_multifinger_click.patch: Drop patch as it breaks the expected
behavior for multitouch clicking (LP: #320585).

However, I still experience the behaviour introduced in -1ubuntu1.
Hopefully I can help get the expected behaviour back in time for
karmic's release.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 297335] Re: Video on Intel D201GLY2 motherboard still broken, can't compile Intel's fixed drivers

2009-11-26 Thread reinhard
** Tags added: karmic
** Tags removed: intrepid

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sis

Ubuntu's drivers for SiS video on the Intel D201GLY2 motherboard have
known issues, namely that there is Vertical Noise on the screen. (It
looks like it's displaying an incorrect pixel every time there's a write
to video RAM). It happens on Ubuntu's stock drivers on both Hardy and
  Intrepid (haven't tried earlier versions).

Intel has their driver source code available which fixes the issues,
except while it would compile under Hardy, it won't compile under
Intrepid, apparently due to using a different xorg API.

I recently tried switching from Hardy to Intrepid. Before, I was able
to use a binary driver which someone built for Hardy. But on Intrepid,
the binary driver has the wrong ABI version, so it won't work.

I ended up reverting back to Hardy.

Is there any work going on at making this motherboard work? I briefly
tried porting the code to the new API, but it was too complicated for
me, considering that I know absolutely nothing about how to write xorg
  drivers.
+
+ This problem is still present in Karmic, even a little worse than
+ earlier.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 446674] Re: [M7 LW] no more stellarium or googleearth with mesa 7.6 with Radeon Mobility 7500 1002:4c57

2009-11-26 Thread Steve Graham
I also had Stellarium crash after upgrading on an IBM T30. The video
card is ATI Radeon Mobility M7 LW (AGP) and I was using the radeon
(not ati) X driver. The error reports in dmesg as segfault in
radeon_dri.so

The crash no longer occurs after downgrading libgl1-mesa-dri from
7.6.0-1 to 7.4.0 (only that one change made).

(However, when closing Stellarium, there are now loads of freeing
invalid memtype errors in dmesg/syslog. Maybe it always did that?)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486367] Re: RV280 Radeon 9200 pro Hardware not fully supported.

2009-11-26 Thread Ismael
I am indeed using Karmic (9.10), I'm facing some freezing problems as well.
especially when minimizing or maximizing a window. Sometimes I think it's the
operating system that blocks, but it's actually the graphic card where the
problem is. I've also tried to install proprietary drivers, but after following
all the different steps and instructions, it doesn't even show up in the
drivers menu. I tried Catalyst, I also tried to install a different driver that
was made for my graphic card (downloaded from the website of ati/amd). What a
horrific experience.
When I rebooted my computer everything went black, I had to use the safe mode
and needed to change something in a .conf file to mesa, in order to make it
work again.

In jaunty I never had any problems, I could even use advanced desktop
effects and compiz.

I am running kernel 2.6.31-15 on Karmic
using kdm
using KDE 4.3.2
using nvidia driver 185.18.36
2xNvidia 9800 GTX cards in SLI configuration

rebooting sometimes fixes it.Seems to have started after the latest
updates ( ~approx Nov 24/2009 ??). Worked perfectly before upgrades as
well!

switched to gdm and several reboots, seems to work fine afterwards.
Switched back to kdm to see what would happen and it worked
intermittently after several reboots but overall still exhibits problem.
Seems like a kdm timing problem??

Switching back to gdm seems to have stabilized it for now.

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: xorg

Since I upgraded to Karmic Koala, my MSI Wind laptop screen keeps
flickering after startup. There's a brightness slider in the top right, so I
suppose it's trying to adjust the brightness of the screen and it can't
decide between 80% or 90% so it keeps changing between the two. This lasts
for a couple of minutes, then it stops flickering.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 416001] Re: Notification and similar dialogs are displaying corrupted after update on Karmic

2009-11-26 Thread vbar
I have a Compaq Evo N600c with ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY 32MB running with
xubuntu 9.10 and can confirm that AccelMethod EXA fixes the drawing problems
with the notifications.
The big problem is that my system is still not stable with radeon module, i.e.
after some time of 2-D usage (30min-2h) the system locks up (mostly
soft-lockup). I used openSuse 11.1/2 before and could still get kernel debug
messages/sysrq key responses via network debug. (in opensuse 11.0 I used fglrx,
which was stable). So I use vesa most of the time, which is quite slow. To
watch a movie or sth., I save my work and switch to the radeon module.
To test if, an especially how stable the system is (for ex. with different
xorg.conf options), I start etracer (extrem tux racer). It reliably locks up
the system (didnt with fglrx some years ago). With no option quite fast in the
startup menu, with EXA the menus seem more or less stable, though have drawing
errors.
I would be glad if someone can help me and tell me what and how to debug /
whether to file a new bug report.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 444674] Re: Mouse behaves strange on clicking in graphical environment

2009-11-26 Thread tuxfrank
I have exactly the same problem on my DELL D600. I have been monitoring
this page to see if a solution would be created, so I could switch to
karmic.

I have experimented a bit with disabling my touchpad using the xinput
command, and through removing the appropriate xorg device driver module
from the /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input folder. Both the xinput command,
and removing the xorg device driver resulted in the same effect. The
touchpad and it's buttons were disabled and the behavior of the track
stick and it's buttons became better, but the middel mouse button (l+r
at the same time) did not work. Also trying to resize a window it
appeared that the mouse button only became activated after the movement
had started, so the selection happened beside the window.

Anyway this appeared not to be the solution. But I think I have found a
good solution and I'm curious to know if it works for everybody.

The trick seems to be, to change the settings for the mouse pointer in your
BIOS:
Choose for your pointing device the option PS/2 Mouse, instead of Touchpad
- PS/2 mouse.

Despite what you might expect from this, both the track stick and the
touchpad work fine under Karmic after this BIOS modification on my DELL
D600.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486367] Re: RV280 Radeon 9200 pro Hardware not fully supported.

2009-11-26 Thread Ismael
Well to be honest, my computer hasn't crashed heavily or repeatedly yet. It is
more like freezing and then it works again. I also notice it when watching
video's (or at least trying to) that it hangs sometimes. Especially with Miro.
Gimp is of course a pain in the ass when I want to use heavy brushes and stuff
like that. But if I really need to use it, I use the 9.04 LiveCD, I'm just too
lazy to downgrade the whole thing...

I was looking around to maybe upgrade my computer in the near future,
more RAM, new videocard etc...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485651] Re: Karmic + KDM + NVidia = Can't boot (low graphic mode)

Actually, it wasn't fixed at all.

This morning it worked once, but this evening when I came back home and
powered up the computer, the low graphic mode message was back.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 465470] Re: KDE doesn't start after 9.10 update. Radeon? KDM?

2009-11-26 Thread Chris
Doing all updates the system is offering didn't change anything. :(

So my system is still anoying me. I can only work with it by exiting to
the console and running the command sudo initctl restart kdm there.
This gives me a normal desktop as expected - but only after manual
interaction.

If that's an upstart problem (what I'm really thinking now), how can I
debug it? And what's the right package to add to this bug report?

** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Confirmed

** Package changed: xorg-server (Ubuntu) = upstart (Ubuntu)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 475917] Re: [i945GME, nomodeset] mouse cursor invisible

2009-11-26 Thread LeAlex
This sounds quite similiar to what happens on my ThinkPad R61 with Intel GMA
X3100. I use KDE 4.3.2 under Debian Testing AMD64.
When I boot with an external TFT at VGA and switch from 1024x768 to 1280x1024
(native resolution of the external display) the cursor becomes invisible on the
external screen. When I switch back it reappears.
After some time it becomes visible again when I leave the resolution at
1280x1024. I'm not sure why exactly ... when I looked on the TFT it was
suddenly there. In all these instances I was working in a terminal window
(yakuake), but I have to verify if that's the reason.
I had no problems with Kubuntu 9.04 and the external display.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 444674] Re: Mouse behaves strange on clicking in graphical environment

2009-11-26 Thread tuxfrank
Hmmm, I think I was a bit to enthusiastic. After having continued
working, I seems that once in a while (much less often) there still goes
something wrong with the detection of mouse button activities (button
down or release).

Still curious about the experience of others however.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 484020] Re: [i845G] Display freezes (except for mouse pointer) without warning

2009-11-26 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
I've got the same bug on the same chipset.
Am I right, that your system also useses the i915 driver (and not i845G)?
Then the title of the bug is wrong and should be changed.

The tag and title refers to chipset, not driver. You can find the
chipset you are using with `lscpi -vvnn` or by looking for Chipset in
Xorg.0.log. There are different names for the different drivers. The
2D driver used to be called i810, but is currently called intel. Then
there is the i915 kernel module, i915 and i965 mesa 3D drivers, etc.
Bugs often only occur on only one chipset even though the same driver
is used (currently there are many reports of freezes with 845G and
855GM, but not many on 865G, 915G and 945G, for example, even though
they use the same driver).

2009-11-26 Thread Michael Trunner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 313514 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/313514

I believe this is a Xorg/X11 problem, not a kernel related.
The problem is that X can not handle keycodes above 255.
A workaround is patching the kernel that an other keycode 255 is used.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 318325] Re: [X1100] flickering after resume from ram

2009-11-26 Thread Chris
Confirmed that the fixes described above do not fix Karmic (fully
updated release version, running from a USB pen drive) on my Aspire
5100. Also found that the AGP mode tweaks from

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks#ATI%20AGP%20Mode%20Quirk

don't help.

So if you have one of these machines I'd stick with Jaunty for now.

Status in GNOME Remote Desktop: Incomplete

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: compiz

When using the nvidia-restricted driver and compiz desktop effects the vnc
server will not refresh the screen. This is being caused by the xserver not
getting damaged by the nvidia-restricted drivers. Linked bugs confirm this
is not an issue on intel chipsets or nv driver.

 Steps to reproduce:
Enable desktop-effects (default) with nvidia-restricted driver
 Enable remote desktop
 Connect with VNC

 Results:
You see a screen snapshot of your desktop but if you click a menu item there
are no updates to the screen.
 Notes:
If you close and restart the vnc session, you get an updated snapshot but
 still no refreshes.

 Workarounds:
Use the -noxdamage argument with vncviewer. This is really inefficient and
bandwidth hungry since the whole screen refreshes.
Kill compiz and use a different wm (metacity).

This bug has been confirmed by many others with linked reports. Might be an
issue with xorg since there is a report of ATI drivers with similar issues in
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/328559 .

2009-11-26 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
I'm marking the xorg and xserver-xorg-video-intel tasks as invalid,
since only xorg-server needs to be fixed.

** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Invalid

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf

2009-11-26 Thread sp0spo
I have an ati 3200 hd card. It is an integrated graphics chip/card on my
780g mini-itx motherboard. None of the ati releases of fglrx work with
this card and I get this error when I try to use them via enabling the
driver. I was able to enable and not have this problem when I was
running Jaunty. Someone please help with the progress of this bug so I
can finally watch 1080p in Karmic.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf

2009-11-26 Thread sp0spo
If I enable the fglrx driver, then I get a flashing console login screen
and xwindows does not load when I reboot. In order to fix this, I have
to delete xorg.conf; at which point, the console login screen stops
flashing and I think xwindows begins to load automatically (i am not
sure exactly/i forgot).

I cannot watch 1080p movies well because of slowdowns, However when I do watch
them, the subtitles sometimes flash and the artifacts of the screen/lighting
flash.

Thus, because of all the flashing, maybe this is related to refresh rate
or something that goes bad. I am not sure nor how that would be related
to amdpcsdb.default
