[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 489855] Re: System bell broken under X in Karmic
[If you're happy with the data I attached, can someone please mark this as something other than Incomplete so it won't vanish? Thanks.] I now think that this bug might not implicate X, or it might be a bad interaction where X's bell event is being mishandled by gnome/metacity/pulseaudio. Please see bug #486154, comment #8, for details. (Note that that comment points out that I am still seeing what I believe to be a very longstanding bug in which xset b volume pitch duration is being incorrectly processed as xset b duration pitch duration; should I open a new bug on this? I note bug #280767, opened a year ago, reports this, and it even got action last week, but that action was to say that this behavior isn't an X bug with no other explanation. Is xset not part of X? Or it considered a kernel bug or something? I still run 5.04 (!) on one of my machines and the bug is -at least- that old, which makes it over 4.5 years old!) -- System bell broken under X in Karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/489855 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nv in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 9068] Re: Serial mouse/mice not autodetected
I use a MEDL trackball which uses the old mousesystems protocol. HAL detection will not work as there is nothing to detect. I followed the advice of the above post with no success, and another which reproduced the entire relevant mouse section from my old xorg.conf. To no avail, the parameters I had supplied were appended to the emulated Macintosh button mouse device. A solution for the myriad of upgrading users out here is to re-enable 'Mouse' driver sections in xorg.conf. This is disabled in the HAL driven xorg editions since 9.04. One must add the line:- Option AllowEmptyInput false in the ServerLayout section. This still allows the auto detection of HAL devices but allows the inclusion of manual entries in xorg.conf. Many users with serial mice have had to resort to editing xorg.conf and this restores that possibility. -- Serial mouse/mice not autodetected https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/9068 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is a direct subscriber. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 41301] Re: Mouse clicks stop working sporadically
I agree with Jethro_UK, this is really a showstopper for using ubuntu as a desktop replacement. I can see the exact same problem as he does, but I have some reservations about somethings: In my experience, using a xterm session, mount appears to be responsive and I can't make mouse button events disappear as they are so easily doing when on a gnome desktop. I can also say that I previously used Gentoo with a KDE desktop and there a very similar problem occurred whereby mouse click events would completely stop. After quite some frustration I found that the only way to resolve that (save logging out/in again) was to alt-ctrl to console terminal and then back to windows and then use alt-next to flip windows. Then mouse clicks started registering again. Initially I have to say that my experience on Gentoo was the worst, but at least there it was something you could work yourself out of, here now on Ubuntu the issue that the desktop feels sluggish and unresponsive. A bit like having to deal with someone who is deaf or can't understand what you are saying. Needless to say, if you have any streak of impatience in you then this is not going to make you hang around for long. So, is there any commonality between KDE/Gnome which could explain this behaviour, which I feel cannot be seen on a straight window manager less environment. I'm going to swap over to window manager less for a while to see if the behaviour reappears. Could it be a specific application. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 490844] [NEW] Screen doesn't fit in all the space available
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg The maximum resolution allowed in the configuration tool is 800x600, but the screen doesn't fit in all the space available; if I change the resolution to a lower value, the screen will get even smaller, in relation to the netbook monitor. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 490922] [NEW] Garbled screen after updating x11-common
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I installed all available updates for Ubuntu 9.10 on my MacBook 2,1 today. After a reboot, the login screen was garbled (see attached photo). Using ps aux I was able to decode the error message that was supposed to be shown in the garbled window: Failed to load module i810 (module does not exist, 0) Console screens were affected as well, probably even worse. On the X11 screen, I can still move the mouse and click on things. Terminal screens show a garbled cursor (no photo, sorry) - no other output is reported (blindly logging in an typing sudo reboot is possible though). I fixed this by logging in via SSH and downgrading the Package x11-common from 7.3+3ubuntu10 to 7.4+3ubuntu7 (the only alternative available in aptitude). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 490946] [NEW] Xorg hardware-specific on Delll Mini 9 Inspiron 910 : playback choppy with H264
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Jerky playback of videos using the codec H.264 / AVC on a Dell Mini 9 (Inspiron 910). Totem/gstreamer skips many frames, but the audio plays. In vlc/ffmpeg video plays for a semi second then freezes up, while audio continues. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 490964] [NEW] randr vs displayconfig-gtk
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xrandr Eliminating displayconfig-gtk from Ubuntu 9.1 was a big mistake, Anyone using a lcd tv as a monitor or a monitor that is not recognized can no longer easily and permanently set the screen resolution without a lot of trouble. Xrandr does not make the changes permanently and it requires going into the terminal each time and . Display config allowed you play with , find a resolution that worked and the changes were permanent. No editing of files required. The aim in software development is to make it easier not harder to do something. Why not come up with a program that encompasses the benefits of both displayconfig-gtk and xrandr? The average user of ubuntu does not want to be editing files every time a new version is created. ** Affects: xrandr (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- randr vs displayconfig-gtk https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/490964 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xrandr in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 465318] Re: intel graphics laptop crashes with external monitor
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 408432 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/408432 Juan (#29): Agreed. I gave up and decided to re-install 9.04. It took me three full days to get everything working properly again, notwithstanding my extensive notes posted at http://www.astro.uu.nl/~rutten/Recipes_Ubuntu.html, I again had to re- invebt the weel for many tunings. Even the basic reinstall was problematic, the Ubuntu top install website only offers 9.10 and 8.04 LTS but trying the latter gave me endless bad-video screens without installation. I then found an .iso for 9.04 and found that one should NOT click on Install, but on Try Ubuntu without changing your computer, and install only after that has opened, from the install icon that then appears. Now I have a usable computer again and I can lecture again. So I feel that Ubuntu adds a clicker update in the update manager there should also be a clicker undo update. -- intel graphics laptop crashes with external monitor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/465318 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel (via bug 408432). ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 490932] [NEW] poor performance of Direct3D apps in wine with compiz
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: compiz when compiz desktop effects are enabled, direct3d apps in wine are very slow. this would seem normal, BUT: in Jaunty, i could run a game in wine with desktop effects on and the performance would be very good. in Karmic, i can't do that, because the game is slow to the point of being unplayable. i have to turn off compiz, which is kinda annoying i'm using wine's apt repo, so the wine version was probably the same. that means that the problem lies in compiz, or in X, or in nvidia's drivers. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 491096] [NEW] Unreadable graphics in second X session
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel This problem occurs in Kubuntu Karmic. There are 2 ways to get the same result: - open a remote X session using xdmcp from a second computer - open a windows using krdc from a second computer to tightvnc. tightvnc configured to start a new session using xinet In both cases the kdm greeter appears, in the right proportions, however in the background some giant white text seems to be present. Logging in, the desktop looks fine however fonts in the Kickoff starter are invisible, and programs once started have scrambled title bars. The same happens in Debian squeeze (currently) with intel video. However, configuration of krdc, tightvnc etc. seems to be fine as other machines with different video present no problems. Note that opening a second X session on the same machine works fine. I don't know where to find the log of the malfunctioning session, but can find the log of the primary session, and config files. Let me know what is needed. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] [ubuntu 9.10] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled
I've tried the instruction to apply the patch in 9.10 and it corrects the problems with unminimizing but i cannot still use it because without disabling compiz i cannot reproduce avi's. When i open an avi with totem, it runs a little slow in a window, but when i try to put in full screen, it runs very slow (half frames are dropped). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 491155] [NEW] X reconfiguration from low-res to Nvidia proprietary shifts laptop screen left
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Due to other Nvidia driver bugs my laptop has been running using the Open nv driver on Karmic. I installed a recent xserver-xorg update and on reboot was confronted with a warning that I was running in low-res mode. I checked the box asking if I wanted to install the right hardware driver (optimistically hoping the Nvidia driver issues were addressed). After doing so and Cancelling back to a console login prompt (there was no reboot option) and rebooting, the kdm and Xfce desktop were both shifted to the left approx 1/8th of the screen width. The right side is padded with 11 slices of the last fraction of the screen. The Applications menu cannot be seen as it is shifted off left. Photo attached. Hardware is the Acer Aspire 9300 with the bloody awful GeForce(TM) Go 7300 Nvidia chipset. Last time my laptop worked for a couple of days. Today symptoms have repeated. However, this time the screen became all purple. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 491210] [NEW] Monitor Resolution
Public bug reported: I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.xx with 9.01. Now I am unable to set the monitor resolution above 800x600. I even click on the adjust monitor option and the highest setting it will give me is the above. I had the 8.xx version set at a higher resolution prior to the upgrade--this was an upgrade vs a clean install. Is a bug fix on the way or do I need to reinstall the earlier version. Its a bitch running XP in suns virtual box at the lower resolution. thanks ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Monitor Resolution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/491210 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
