[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456204] Re: [Jaunty] Screen image jumps on boot and in OS
I found the problem! Apparently my motherboard has some design flaw. I have a Gigabyte GA-MA780G-UD3H. I read that it helps to Onboard VGA Output Support option in the Advanced section of the bios and set it to D-Sub/HDMI, but I have not tried it yet myself. So no software problem. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363774] Re: Screen buffer artifacts in Blender with GMA500 Poulsbo video chipset
Hallo, I would like to report that this problem affects me as well. The main 3D view is full of green, black and brown pixels that look like the interface is now properly redrawn. In the bottom panel, various buttons are gray. The button's icon appear when the mouse is over it, but disappears when the mouse cursor moves to another one. When I open and close a menu that covers part of the main 3D view, artifacts appear as soon after the menu is closed. Those artifacts disappear in a moment but are perfectly visible. The whole application is just plain slow. I don't refer to rendering, which works fine, but to the interactive 3D display. On the same PC where Ubuntu 9.10 runs now the MS Windows port of Blender, under XP SP3, was much better. I attach some screenshots and lspci -vvnn run as root. -- Screen buffer artifacts in Blender with GMA500 Poulsbo video chipset https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/363774 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-psb in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in
There's no automatic way to revert to an earlier version of the PPA as a whole, but you can revert packages individually by manually installing the older .deb files. And since only the -intel package has been updated lately, that's the only one you'll have to revert. To install a .deb file manually, type sudo dpkg -i filename The file you want might still be in /var/cache/apt/archives. If not, here is the archive of past versions: https://launchpad.net/~brian-rogers/+archive/graphics-testing/+packages?field.name_filter=field.status_filter=field.series_filter=karmic It's good to save the files (or copy them out of /var/cache/apt/archives where they might be deleted automatically) ahead of time in case X won't boot with the new version. That way you'll already have the old package and can install it from the recovery console. Also, to revert the PPA entirely and go back to Karmic, install ppa-purge and run this command: sudo ppa-purge ppa:brian-rogers/graphics-testing -- [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/456902 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516467] [NEW] Terminate_Server in xmodmap kills X on shift+backspace

This would seem like a higher priority problem than the rare ctrl+alt+backspace problem that was solved with nozap. Perhaps xmodmap shouldn't be able to provide Terminate_Server symbol, or the symbol should be ignored? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 514210] Re: [I915GM] slow desktop refresh poor graphics performance
finally I have found the origin of the problem, looks like the i915 module can not be loaded , because of a mismatch in the kernel module loading orders, since it was impossible to get /dev/dri/card0 To solve the problem, I compiled a custom kernel setting agpgart and i915 drm in the kernel and not as modules. like this everything works fine , since i915 is not a loadable module. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 495553] Re: [K8M800] Screen origin shifted to center, screen wraps, ttyN screens don't work, on Averatec 3280 running Lucid with openchrome driver
I've had the 'Option modeSwitch new' in xorg.conf already. What is happening with the 2.6.32-12-generic kernel is that the screen starts getting dark (mostly dark gray) after selecting the recovery mode, but I can type commands 'blind' to start up Xorg - first selecting the root shell from the menu, then entering my root password, then running a script which starts up some daemons - and then the login screen will appear. So it doesn't really hang up in recovery mode, I just can't see what I am typing. The time it takes to get dark seems to vary. I think this is a viafb driver problem - does that sound right? Up to a day or so ago, the Xorg.0.log was showing a failure to find viafb when booting failed, a number of times. Now I've been seeing situations where Xorg.0.log is empty, instead. I'm sending this from another computer - I'll log in to launchpad on the laptop and attach the .xsession-errors and latest Xorg.0.log files now. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 448911] Re: [CLE266] Console screens unusable, filled with random colors
This bug has reappeared today, with the most recent updates to Lucid. Instead of seeing random small colored pixel blocks, I now see a magnified portion of the X screen background (or the background for the login screen), when switching to a tty with CTL-ALT-F1 ...CTL-ALT-F6. I can login and type into the screen, but no text echos onto the screen, though a large block cursor appears. I can switch back to X with ALT-F1, open a shell window, and see that I indeed was able to log in. I suspect the problem is in the frame-buffer drivers, such as viafb and vt8623fb. This is similar to some aspects of Bug #49553, on another system with a different VIA chipset. The X display (Gnome) appears Ok. ** Description changed: - Binary package hint: xorg + Binary package hint: openchrome, viafb, vt8623fb + + [Update 2010-02-03: See comments starting with #6. The TTY screen + background is now a magnified image derived from the X screen + background, and text is unreadable. hello everyone, i have the same problem with the kde splash screen appearing at installation bootup and then restarting again and again. i have made it through the installation via the text base install and some weird xorg changes ( which i don't recall atm)... when running the computer now, the xorg.conf log files indicate glibc crashing at kde startup the xorg openchrome driver seems to be the culprit. i have attached my verbose xorg output, sincerley hoping someone can fix this! btw, I can start kde, if i disable composite in xorg.conf, so the error might be somewhere around there... lastly, i'm able to run other window managers kdm itself just fine with composite enabled in xorg.conf. however, i attribute that to the non usage of composition by my blackbox wm :) anyway, i hope this is somewhat helpfull... ** Attachment added: Xorg -verbose output at kde start http://launchpadlibrarian.net/38722020/xorglog -- [K8M800]with kernel 2.6.31-14-generic my X server crashes during KDE 4.3.2 startup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/471646 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in
The suggested x11perf command causes an X crash (not a freeze) and gdm restarts. libdrm2: 2.4.11-2+karmic3 xserver-xorg-video-intel: 2.8.0-8-g12c5aec kernel: 2.6.31-17-generic mesa: 7.4.1-1ubuntu6+karmic lspci | grep VGA output: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 03) This is new behavior on my machine from xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.8.1-1, under which the x11perf command completed successfully. I also, as a test, replaced libdrm2, xserver-xorg-video-intel, and all installed mesa packages with their stock karmic repo versions, and tried the x11perf test. This also resulted in an X crash (not a freeze). I'm hopeful that others see a change in behavior here. -- [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/456902 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516861] [NEW] [Karmic][nvidia] VT switch cause segfault error 4 in nvidia_drv.so. Related to pulseaudio?
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg On VT switch sometimes the computer freezes / GFX dies. Happened 3-4 times so far during 3 months. Ubuntu 9.10, NVidia GeForce GTS 250, Quad Core, 64 bit. The main error message(s) Xorg[1662]: segfault at 8 ip 7fa2aff0756f sp 7fff1e5e1620 error 4 in nvidia_drv.so[7fa2afebd000+3ac000] 3: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//nvidia_drv.so(_nv001652X+0x21) [0x7fc04f421851] *** Symptoms *** This time upon more testing I noticed that the computer was in fact running, but the GFX was dead. alt+ctrl+f1 throw me to VT1 where I was able to login as root, but all the time the monitor was showing blank screen. But the GFX card did detect I was in text-only mode, because in this mode it always has fans running at maximum speed (which itself is probably a bug in nvidia power saving, but that is another topic). So - it's more like the GFX output died in a way that I was not able to restore while trying (blindly) to killall -9 X nor /etc/init.d/gdm restart. At some point keyboard died (caps lock not reacting) but SysRq's seem to fix that. I have a feeling this *may* be related to RAM being full and computer swapping during switching (but perhaps totally not). *** Logs *** There are pulse audio errors always when this crash occurs, but they may be just related to the VT switch, not to the crash happening sometimes on VT switch, dunno. This post saved my skin! Thanks for noticing that the video expansion setting would make this work. I just upgraded my wife's Dell D505, and it was set to show a smaller-and-crisper boot-up screen (video expansion = off). If she had seen the screen in that funky interlaced / overlapped / folded mode, I would've been in trouble, for sure. She might've made me buy her a Macbook! Meanwhile, problem solved. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516909] [NEW] entire desktop environment locks up in 9.10, i3-530 proc, built-in graphics
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I recently built a machine, i3-530 processor, built-in graphics, Gigabyte H55M-UD2H motherboard. I installed ubuntu 9.10 64-bit fresh on the machine. I started experiencing locks within GNOME where the entire desktop environment is frozen. Can't move the mouse, keyboard num lock doesn't work, but the machine is still running -- I can ping/ssh to it, etc. Within a few minutes, a stack trace is dumped to /var/log/messages. Easiest way to reproduce is just to enter Screensaver Preferences, and click on anything but the blank screen. It happens 100% of the time. ctrl-alt-f1, ctrl-alt-backspace: does nothing. Mouse pointer doesn't move. Keyboard LED doesn't change. I can ssh. ke...@newb:~$ lspci -nn | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Clarkdale Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0042] (rev 12) Attached: stack trace, Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516929] [NEW] Xorg misbehaves when user home directory is missing
Public bug reported: This is more a case of unwieldy behavior than an actual bug. Steps to recreate: (1) create a user (2) rename their home directory (3) log in to X as that user. After a number of error messages pop up, you're left with a semi-running X session. No panels are running so there's no top-bar menu. Also there's no right-button menu on the desktop. So... There's NO CLEAN WAY TO LOG OUT. Even the two three-fingered- salutes (ctrl-alt-del and ctrl-alt-backspace) fail to shut down X. An experienced end user will switch to tty1 or some other virtual terminal and kill the X server from the command line. However, a less experienced end user will probably end up powering down the computer to recover from this. I understand that the steps-to-recreate are a process that won't happen very often, if at all, during normal use, but there are situations such as migrating a user from one machine to another machine where this sort of thing can and will happen. I can think of a dozen or more ways that a solution could be put in place, but I'm not sure which of them would be preferable so I'll leave that to the experts.
