[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456204] Re: [Jaunty] Screen image jumps on boot and in OS

2010-02-03 Thread LinuxChristian
I found the problem! Apparently my motherboard has some design flaw. I have a
Gigabyte GA-MA780G-UD3H.
I read that it helps to Onboard VGA Output Support option in the Advanced
section of the bios and set it to D-Sub/HDMI, but I have not tried it yet
myself.

So no software problem. Bug closed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363774] Re: Screen buffer artifacts in Blender with GMA500 Poulsbo video chipset

2010-02-03 Thread Marcello Romani
Hallo, I would like to report that this problem affects me as well.

The main 3D view is full of green, black and brown pixels that look like the
interface is now properly redrawn.
In the bottom panel, various buttons are gray. The button's icon appear when
the mouse is over it, but disappears when the mouse cursor moves to another one.
When I open and close a menu that covers part of the main 3D view, artifacts
appear as soon after the menu is closed. Those artifacts disappear in a moment
but are perfectly visible.
The whole application is just plain slow. I don't refer to rendering, which
works fine, but to the interactive 3D display. On the same PC where Ubuntu 9.10
runs now the MS Windows port of Blender, under XP SP3, was much better.

I attach some screenshots and lspci -vvnn run as root.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516446] [NEW] multihead setup changed on wake-up from suspend

2010-02-03 Thread Antti Kaihola
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When opening the netbook lid to wake up from suspend, the xinerama
multi-head setup is different than when closing the lid.

Example 1:

1. open gnome-display-properties
2. configure an external monitor to extend the desktop to the *right* from the
netbook screen
2. note that the panels are on the netbook screen
3. close the lid, wait until suspended, open the lid
4. netbook screen is off, desktop limited to external monitor with panels
visible there
5. hit Fn+8 to enable netbook screen
6. panels still on external monitor
7. external monitor is now to the *left* from the netbook screen
8. use gnome-display-properties to fix the layout

Example 2:

1. open gnome-display-properties
2. configure an external monitor to extend the desktop to the *right* from the
netbook screen
2. note that the panels are on the netbook screen
3. close the lid, wait until suspended, open the lid
4. netbook screen is off, desktop limited to external monitor with panels
visible there
5. open gnome-display-properties
6. netbook screen is automatically enabled (before interacting with
gnome-display-properties)
7. panels move to netbook screen
8. external monitor is now to the *left* from the netbook screen
9. use gnome-display-properties to fix the layout

This is Lucid up-to-date as of 2010-02-03 with xserver-xorg-core
2:1.7.3.902-1ubuntu9, running on a Dell Mini 9 with an external BenQ
1280x1024 VGA LCD panel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in

2010-02-03 Thread Brian Rogers
There's no automatic way to revert to an earlier version of the PPA as a
whole, but you can revert packages individually by manually installing
the older .deb files. And since only the -intel package has been updated
lately, that's the only one you'll have to revert.

To install a .deb file manually, type
sudo dpkg -i filename

The file you want might still be in /var/cache/apt/archives. If not, here is
the archive of past versions:
https://launchpad.net/~brian-rogers/+archive/graphics-testing/+packages?field.name_filter=field.status_filter=field.series_filter=karmic

It's good to save the files (or copy them out of /var/cache/apt/archives
where they might be deleted automatically) ahead of time in case X won't
boot with the new version. That way you'll already have the old package
and can install it from the recovery console.

Also, to revert the PPA entirely and go back to Karmic, install ppa-purge and
run this command:
sudo ppa-purge ppa:brian-rogers/graphics-testing

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516467] [NEW] Terminate_Server in xmodmap kills X on shift+backspace

2010-02-03 Thread Ville M. Vainio
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have an xmodmap (generated with earlier Ubuntu) that had:

keycode 22 = BackSpace Terminate_Server BackSpace

On karmic, shitf+backspace kills X server. I practically never hit the
old ctrl+alt+backspace problem, but this kept tripping me up quite often
until I found the exact combo and was able to do the right google
search.

This would seem like a higher priority problem than the rare
ctrl+alt+backspace problem that was solved with nozap. Perhaps xmodmap
shouldn't be able to provide Terminate_Server symbol, or the symbol
should be ignored?

Related bug: #46814

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 312756] Re: support graphics card hot switch

2010-02-03 Thread mycroes
I thought I'd add my odd entry too:

I own a Jewel Diamond 2600, which basically is the Uniwill 259-EN3.
Inside there's an Intel 915GM and a GeForce 6600 Go (MXM). There's a
hardware switch to choose between the graphic cards, I've never actually
figured that DSDT might show more information about the device in use at
that time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 474928] Re: mesa applications crash Mobility 7500 and corrupt filesystem

2010-02-03 Thread Alexander Kiel
I have a Dell D600 Laptop here. It has a Radeon 9000 (RV250). I
installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. After the first boot into the new
system, I can't start any application and I get the described errors. So
the bug effects normal users just installing UNR on a laptop with old
Radeon cards since UNR uses 3D for normal desktop.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516548] [NEW] Xorg freeze, screen flickering

2010-02-03 Thread Antti Kaihola
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

During normal use (Emacs), for no apparent reason, both screens (netbook
+ external) go black with a blue-white approx. 10 px high stripe at the
top with horizontal stripes flickering all around the screen. No
response to mouse or keyboard, not even SysRq combinations.

No messages in logs indicating any problems in the kernel or Xorg at the
time of the freeze.

This was the first freeze after upgrading to:
- kernel 2.6.32-12-generic #16-Ubuntu SMP
- xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.3.902-1ubuntu9
- xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-1ubuntu3

I've previously had freezes with no screen corruption:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/507813 but in those cases I always got stuff in the Xorg log
as described in that bug.

This is a Dell Mini 9 with Intel 945GME.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516563] [NEW] windows focus gets 'confused' with mouse clicks.

2010-02-03 Thread Foldarn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

The wrong windows take a mouse click after alt-tabs are performed and
max/minimizes done by double-clicking the title-bars of windows. Not
sure if it only happens with title-bar double-clicking because that's
the only method I use. The bug is that clicks register in the wrong
window sometimes when I attempt to use any of the window controls
(title, min, max, close, resizes)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 514210] Re: [I915GM] slow desktop refresh poor graphics performance

2010-02-03 Thread sancelot
finally I have found the origin of the problem, looks like the i915
module can not be loaded , because of a mismatch in the kernel module
loading orders, since it was impossible to get /dev/dri/card0

To solve the problem, I compiled a custom kernel setting agpgart and i915 drm
in the kernel and not as modules.
like this everything works fine , since i915 is not a loadable module.

Can somebody forward this bug to the right group (udev ?) I suppose I
won't be the single user of an i915 chipset...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 479839] Re: Synaptics Touchpad on Dell Inspiron 2650 not always working after restart

2010-02-03 Thread Dmitri
Same problem.
My notes:
1) the touchpad is not working on boot with 50% probability. works always after
SHMConfig true added to xorg.conf
2) sometimes the keyboard AND the touchpad both do not work. With 5-10%
probability. SHMConfig true DO NOT HELP IN THIS CASE...

Could it be 2 different bugs?

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 495553] Re: [K8M800] Screen origin shifted to center, screen wraps, ttyN screens don't work, on Averatec 3280 running Lucid with openchrome driver

2010-02-03 Thread Peter Belew
I've had the 'Option modeSwitch new' in xorg.conf already.

What is happening with the 2.6.32-12-generic kernel is that the screen
starts getting dark (mostly dark gray) after selecting the recovery
mode, but I can type commands 'blind' to start up Xorg - first
selecting the root shell from the menu, then entering my root
password, then running a script which starts up some daemons - and
then the login screen will appear. So it doesn't really hang up in
recovery mode, I just can't see what I am typing.

The time it takes to get dark seems to vary. I think this is a viafb
driver problem - does that sound right? Up to a day or so ago, the
Xorg.0.log was showing a failure to find viafb when booting failed, a
number of times. Now I've been seeing situations where Xorg.0.log is
empty, instead.

I'm sending this from another computer - I'll log in to launchpad on
the laptop and attach the .xsession-errors and latest Xorg.0.log
files now.

On Tue, Feb 2, 2010 at 11:31 PM, Bartosz gan...@poczta.onet.pl wrote:
To resolve this problem you must enable newModeSwitch.
Unfortunately it doesn't work properly on chipset K8M800.
Please try to enable the newModeSwitch on working openchrome - on kernel
which works (I should know that this is not kernel problem).

To enable new mode switch, add to your xorg.conf file following line on the
 latest openchrome revision:
   Option modeSwitch new

The system hangs after restart, but please attach the Xorg.0.log file from it.
 Attach your ~/.xsession-errors file

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 487185] Re: [g45] On Intel G45 unable to read EDID block in Dmesg after move from G35 to G45

2010-02-03 Thread T. S.
I apparently just experienced the same problem, and it crashed my X
server. I was writing some e-mails in Thunderbird and suddenly X crashed
and restarted. I was running just the laptop screen at the time, but
often I use an external screen as well, if that matters.

I have a Fujitsu S7020 with Intel 915GM/GMS/910GML graphics, running
Ubuntu 9.10 and kernel 2.6.31-17-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP.

I'm a little confused by the syslog since it appears that Gnome was
already dead when the kernel logged the EDID error.

In this case, I booted in recovery mode, and as the screen darkened, I

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 448911] Re: [CLE266] Console screens unusable, filled with random colors

2010-02-03 Thread Peter Belew
This bug has reappeared today, with the most recent updates to Lucid.
Instead of seeing random small colored pixel blocks, I now see a
magnified portion of the X screen background (or the background for the
login screen), when switching to a tty with CTL-ALT-F1 ...CTL-ALT-F6. I
can login and type into the screen, but no text echos onto the screen,
though a large block cursor appears. I can switch back to X with ALT-F1,
open a shell window, and see that I indeed was able to log in. I suspect
the problem is in the frame-buffer drivers, such as viafb and vt8623fb.
This is similar to some aspects of Bug #49553, on another system with a
different VIA chipset.

The X display (Gnome) appears Ok.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 448911] Re: [CLE266] Console screens unusable, filled with random colors

2010-02-03 Thread Peter Belew
** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: xorg
+ Binary package hint: openchrome, viafb, vt8623fb
+
+ [Update 2010-02-03: See comments starting with #6. The TTY screen
+ background is now a magnified image derived from the X screen
+ background, and text is unreadable. Also I'm not sure this system is
+ using openchrome.]

When I switch to a text console with ctrl-alt-Fn, I get a background
screen filled with multicolored random pixels. I am able to log in
(despite not being able to see what I'm typing), and can switch back to
X with alt-F7, and see the login with 'who'. I believe this system is
using a Openchrome driver. This has been happening at least since the
Karmic beta release. This system has a Jetway 625EMPxxx or 625EMWxxx
motherboard with a VIA chipset. The graphic controller is

This is also happening on my other Karmic test system, an Averatec 3280

identical to what I see on this system. The laptop's graphic controller

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 471646] Re: [K8M800]with kernel 2.6.31-14-generic my X server crashes during KDE 4.3.2 startup

2010-02-03 Thread Chris
hello everyone,

i have the same problem with the kde splash screen appearing at
installation bootup and then restarting again and again. i have made
it through the installation via the text base install and some weird
xorg changes ( which i don't recall atm)... when running the computer
now, the xorg.conf log files indicate glibc crashing at kde startup
the xorg openchrome driver seems to be the culprit.

i have attached my verbose xorg output, sincerley hoping someone can fix this!
btw, I can start kde, if i disable composite in xorg.conf, so the error might
be somewhere around there...

lastly, i'm able to run other window managers kdm itself just fine
with composite enabled in xorg.conf. however, i attribute that to the
non usage of composition by my blackbox wm :)

anyway, i hope this is somewhat helpfull...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 515371] Re: [Lucid] radeonhd driver does not work with a monitor section in xorg.conf

2010-02-03 Thread Ben Blout
Is this the right location (package) for this to be filed agains?

Separately, I could go upstream with it, if that is appropriate, but I would
like some one with more
knowledge to tell me it is not a Ubuntu-specific

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516837] [NEW] two blinking lines appear on my screen continuously

2010-02-03 Thread Paul Harper
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Two vertical blinking lines appear on my screen. They are one pixel in
width and always appear on the furthest column of pixels to the left and
on the middle-right portion of my screen. The color is white. The pixels
flash up and down the two columns I already mentioned. Problem has been
persistent since I was running Ubuntu 8.10 (now running Karmic).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in

2010-02-03 Thread Adam J. Lincoln
The suggested x11perf command causes an X crash (not a freeze) and gdm
restarts.

libdrm2: 2.4.11-2+karmic3
xserver-xorg-video-intel: 2.8.0-8-g12c5aec
kernel: 2.6.31-17-generic
mesa: 7.4.1-1ubuntu6+karmic

lspci | grep VGA output:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE
Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 03)

This is new behavior on my machine from xserver-xorg-video-intel
2.8.1-1, under which the x11perf command completed successfully. I
also, as a test, replaced libdrm2, xserver-xorg-video-intel, and all
installed mesa packages with their stock karmic repo versions, and tried
the x11perf test. This also resulted in an X crash (not a freeze).

I'm hopeful that others see a change in behavior here.

*** Symptoms ***
This time upon more testing I noticed that the computer was in fact running,
but the GFX was dead.
alt+ctrl+f1 throw me to VT1 where I was able to login as root, but all the time
the monitor was showing blank screen.

But the GFX card did detect I was in text-only mode, because in this
mode it always has fans running at maximum speed (which itself is
probably a bug in nvidia power saving, but that is another topic).

So - it's more like the GFX output died in a way that I was not able to
restore while trying (blindly) to killall -9 X nor /etc/init.d/gdm
restart.

At some point keyboard died (caps lock not reacting) but SysRq's seem to
fix that.

I have a feeling this *may* be related to RAM being full and computer
swapping during switching (but perhaps totally not).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516861] Re: [Karmic][nvidia] VT switch cause segfault error 4 in nvidia_drv.so. Related to pulseaudio?

2010-02-03 Thread LimCore

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

On VT switch sometimes the computer freezes / GFX dies. Happened 3-4 times so
far during 3 months.
Ubuntu 9.10, NVidia GeForce GTS 250, Quad Core, 64 bit.

  The main error message(s)
  Xorg[1662]: segfault at 8 ip 7fa2aff0756f sp 7fff1e5e1620 error 4 in

Remaining Xorg.?.log of 4..7 have same backtrace; they are probably result of
attempts to alt+ctrl+f7 alt+ctrl+f8 while the screen/gfx where unable to work
normally.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 512399] Re: inconsistent height and style of fonts in all applications after update

2010-02-03 Thread Xolotl Loki
The bug has nothing to do with nvidia drivers.

I uninstalled the nvidia drivers, rebooted the machine, ran X in
failsafe mode, and the problem persists. I'm attaching my current dmesg
and xdpyinfo.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org prior to release 7.5

2010-02-03 Thread nhasian
instead of using the nvidia restricted drivers, has anyone tried it with
the open source Nouveau drivers for Nvidia?

http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/UbuntuPackages

Also if your using ATI restricted drivers you could try removing them
and just using the latest linux kernel 2.6.33 as it has many
improvements for ATI GPUs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 373264] Re: [i855] intel 855 (GME) fails to set proper resolution in Jaunty when BIOS Video expansion is off

2010-02-03 Thread Alan Porter
This post saved my skin!

Thanks for noticing that the video expansion setting would make this
work. I just upgraded my wife's Dell D505, and it was set to show a
smaller-and-crisper boot-up screen (video expansion = off). If she had
seen the screen in that funky interlaced / overlapped / folded mode, I
would've been in trouble, for sure. She might've made me buy her a
Macbook!

Meanwhile, problem solved. I am happy that she can run jaunty on her
lappie.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 214439] Re: Quake engine games freeze if video settings changed

2010-02-03 Thread jhansonxi
I came across an old PCI Banshee card. The freeze still occurs on
Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala). I only tested OpenArena at 16BPP.

X also seems to freeze if I switch to a VT with the game running full-
screen. I can do a Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot from the VT.

I don't need the card. I'll ship it to whoever wants to fix the bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516909] [NEW] entire desktop environment locks up in 9.10, i3-530 proc, built-in graphics

2010-02-03 Thread KeithM
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I recently built a machine, i3-530 processor, built-in graphics,
Gigabyte H55M-UD2H motherboard.

I installed ubuntu 9.10 64-bit fresh on the machine. I started
experiencing locks within GNOME where the entire desktop environment is
frozen. Can't move the mouse, keyboard num lock doesn't work, but the
machine is still running -- I can ping/ssh to it, etc.

Within a few minutes, a stack trace is dumped to /var/log/messages.

Easiest way to reproduce is just to enter Screensaver Preferences, and
click on anything but the blank screen. It happens 100% of the time.

ctrl-alt-f1, ctrl-alt-backspace: does nothing. Mouse pointer doesn't
move. Keyboard LED doesn't change. I can ssh.

ke...@newb:~$ lspci -nn | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Clarkdale
Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0042] (rev 12)

Attached: stack trace, Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old. All in one file
because I can't do multiple attachments.

Thanks for taking a look at this. Forums posts from all over indicate
that a lot of people are having this issue, but perhaps with different
graphics chipsets than mine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 512185] Re: Touchpad not working

2010-02-03 Thread Earl Malmrose
While the touchpad works with the kernel paramter tweak, there is no way
adjust any of the settings. Particularly sensitivity really needs to be
turned up a bit.

$ sudo tpconfig -i
Found Synaptics Touchpad.
Firmware: 8.96 (multiple-byte mode).
Sensor type: unknown (0).
Geometry: rectangular/landscape/up.
Packets: absolute, 80 packets per second.
Corner taps disabled; no tap gestures.
Edge motion: none.
Z threshold: 6 of 7.
2 button mode; corner tap is right button click.

$ synclient -l
Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?

If it's not a hardware failure then it could be a timing bug. CPU speed
could also affect it in that situation. Mine is 1.6GHz.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516929] [NEW] Xorg misbehaves when user home directory is missing

2010-02-03 Thread PaulReiber
Public bug reported:

This is more a case of unwieldy behavior than an actual bug. Steps to
recreate: (1) create a user (2) rename their home directory (3) log in
to X as that user.

After a number of error messages pop up, you're left with a semi-running
X session. No panels are running so there's no top-bar menu. Also
there's no right-button menu on the desktop.

So... There's NO CLEAN WAY TO LOG OUT. Even the two three-fingered-
salutes (ctrl-alt-del and ctrl-alt-backspace) fail to shut down X. An
experienced end user will switch to tty1 or some other virtual terminal
and kill the X server from the command line. However, a less
experienced end user will probably end up powering down the computer to
recover from this.

I understand that the steps-to-recreate are a process that won't happen
very often, if at all, during normal use, but there are situations such
as migrating a user from one machine to another machine where this sort
of thing can and will happen.

I can think of a dozen or more ways that a solution could be put in
place, but I'm not sure which of them would be preferable so I'll leave
that to the experts.
